The Best Day Trips to Restaurants and Food Destinations Near the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"There are several excellent coffee roasters in Wisconsin, including Ruby Coffee Roasters and Wonderstate Coffee. But Ember and Bean is just over the Minnesota-Wisconsin border in Hudson, making for a snappy 35-minute drive, and their coffees are not yet widely distributed in the Twin Cities. Visit this coffee shop to sample one of Jessica and Jonathan Pressley’s latest single-origin brews or specialty coffee drinks." - Justine Jones

We were on our way back home, from Minneapolis to Milwaukee. This coffee shop was in our Wisconsin Coffee Passport booklet, so we decided to give it a try. It was a little confusing finding the place, since it's located in the rear. It's a cute spot, with a beautiful view of the St. Croix River. If we had time, we would have gone down to the water to enjoy our beverages. They have several large tables outside. Inside, there are a few seats in the main area, which can be a little loud. You'll find additional seating beyond this space, and those areas were quieter and great for conversations. There were several other people/orders ahead of us. The staff taking the orders was friendly and patient. We ordered a London Fog (a little lavender, a little vanilla, extra foam) and a coffee latte. I watched as they made the drinks, and you could tell that these folks cared about each one. They didn't rush the London Fog — taking the time to steep it just right, and again, taking time with frothing the milk. It was a pleasure to watch. Both drinks were very good! Not sure when we will be back through, but would love to stop again.

I popped in here today on this cold rainy morning and grabbed a hot chai. The chai was good with an emphasis on the spice! I liked their mugs too. The gals working were super chill and friendly. Shout out to the barista who topped my chai off with a little more milk before I grabbed it, good vibes. The shop had a super warm and inviting feeling. The chairs were remarkably comfy as well. I feel like some coffee shops overlook their seating and sometimes this is half the experience for me. I want to be comfortable while I am sipping on something warm in the fall or year round for that matter. They have bench, chair and stool seating. The seating of the chairs and stools are like a leather fabric in a lattice style pattern (a similar style to that of a good apple pie) so you perfectly sink into it versus a hard wood base. I also noticed they had a seasonal cardamom latte which I could see myself coming back for, and I am not really even much of a coffee person! There is paid street parking but if you go east about a block away from the shop, there is a larger parking lot with up to 4 hours of free parking. The shop is also a little smaller and was almost full on a Tuesday morning but people were coming and going so I think you should be able to find a spot.

I had the special, ending soon to switch to fall flavors. This one has banana and caramel, I'm not much of a fan of banana but this was recommended by the cashier, so I tried it! Little banana flavor, yay. It was yummy! The wait for the drink was a little longer than desired but the space was small and it was a gorgeous day

Google
The atmosphere was really aesthetic and the baristas were super helpful and friendly. The coffee was definitely not sweet at all which is nice for some, but I personally like mine sweeter ;). Busy on a Saturday but an overall good experience!

Google
Phenomenal. Well crafted coffee drinks. If you’re looking for the perfect cup to start your morning, this is your stop.

Google
Fantastic local coffee shop. Great single origin offerings, delicious house made syrups and creative drink options. Shop is welcoming and the locals and visitors were all gracious. Great place!

Google
Very good coffee on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Drip was excellent. Latte was solid.

Had to cross state lines to get my father-in-law some Spotted Cow and came across this little gem of a café. The entrance is further down than we originally thought. Just read the signs. The space inside was a bit limited, but honestly quite sufficient. There's additional seating in the hallway. I enjoyed the design aspects. We had asked for a Pup Cup to bring out to our dog and they told us that they allowed dogs inside! Definite plus! We humans got a cold brew, and a seasonal latté that was flavored with a housemade cinnamon-plum syrup. I asked the barista if it was very sweet and he assured me that it was not. He was indeed being truthful! That drink was absolutely delicious--the espresso had a great roast and body, the milk was the right temp, and the flavors worked well with just the right amount of sweetness. Sometimes I just want an espresso. Sunday, I wanted a latté. And, it was a dang good latté.

Yelp
Wandering around Hudson looking for a coffee place to try and found Ember and Bean. Located in the bottom section of the building, it is a quaint space with lots to offer. There is also some outdoor seating available. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We had asked for some recommendations on what would be good. Hubs wanted something a little more coffee forward, so he got a caramel cortado on ice. I went for one of the summer specials. Will happily stop in again when in Hudson!

Yelp
Kind of hidden, kinda great Located at Commercial and Bus 35, almost on the river, in the back of the building (enter at the rear of the building). Not a lot of signage, but you will be glad you found it. Inside is small with so.e tables and a little counter space. Very cute and clean Food is limited, but looked good. Service was very happy. Happy to see you and happy with their coworkers Let's face however, it's a coffee shop, so the coffee needs to be good And it is. I ordered my standard, an Americano. It was great. I was impressed because a lot of coffee shops should not roast their own beens. But they do an excellent job

Yelp
Drove from the cities to Willow River and it didn't look like there were much for coffee shops in the Hudson area. The locals must like it because it stayed busy on a Saturday morning but my husband and I both thought our drinks were meh, staff wasn't super personable (though the other customers were very nice), and it's a small shop with a lot of foot traffic. Would pay more for a latte I like more or just swing through Starbucks because at least it's consistent! Probably wouldn't come back if I was driving through again!

Yelp
Ember & Bean has some of the best espresso around -- their Copilot beans are excellent, and every latte I've had here has been spot on. I love their ever changing seasonal drinks because they are always so unique. The staff is incredibly friendly, not just with people but with dogs too -- they always welcome mine inside and even offer her a pup cup. The shop itself is small but cozy, with a cute patio.

Yelp
Awesome little coffee shop - 4 stars! My buddy and I went to the new ice cream place and discovered E&B, the coffee shop next door! We both grabbed some coffee after grabbing our ice cream treats. The coffee was excellent. They also have bags of coffee to-go, pastries, and E&B bling like mugs, hats, t-shirts, etc. BTW, I like the design of the place too and I love the logo. Finally, the customer service was great. Thumbs up! -Maxx

Yelp
I've gone to a lot of coffee shops this summer on road trips away from Minneapolis. Too few take their coffee seriously. It was clear that this was different at Ember and Bean. The pour over I had was great and I could tell the baristas took great care and had everything dialed in so if you are a purist when it comes to. Good coffee this is the spot for you.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee spots! Have to hit it any time I'm round Hudson/Stillwater. The staff is amazing and the coffee is even better. They make most of the components in house and their food menu looks great. Unique drinks, expertly roasted beans, and food for most dietary restrictions. I asked about their most "chocolatey" roast and the pour over they recommended was some of the best coffee I've ever had. It was basically hot chocolate in coffee form. I need to come back more often to try their food and go on a walk by the river. It's a very small space so it would be hard to hang out at busier times, but there is ample street parking to walk the area or grab something to go. The building is cozy and they've got lots of plants to liven up the space. Their roasting machine is in the middle of the seating area, which is really cool. I 100% recommend checking it out and asking for a recommendation from the barista!

Yelp
I was introduced to this coffee at a lift bridge event in stillwater. There were numerous roasters there and I enjoyed Ember & Bean the most! When I went over to the shop in Hudson I asked what the funkiest coffee was. A knowledgeable staff member told me her thoughts & why. Sold! Such great coffee!! Next visit I decided to pick one on my own based on note descriptions. Another win! Needless to say I am making more trips over the bridge to purchase my coffee beans.

Kevin Q.

Yelp
Superb coffee! So glad we came to Hudson. Great location, friendly staff. Did I mention their coffee? It is really, really good! They know what they are doing.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop hidden away in Hudson! You have to go down a side street to get here, there is some signs to let you know where the coffee is. The place isn't super big, not a lot of sitting room. Looks very simple and clean though! We ordered some pour overs and got some whole beans to go. The coffee was very good, and smooth. Will come back when I am around the area to try some more drinks out!

Yelp
Some of the best coffee I've ever had! I'm obsessed with their Kyoto Nitro Coffee, highly recommend giving it a try. The shop itself is so cozy with some seating inside and a few spots outside. The service has always been super friendly, which makes it a great spot to grab a quick coffee or stay awhile to work or read your favorite book.

Katy M.

Yelp
The staff were so sweet and had the best attitudes! From the moment we walked in the cashier was making recommendations and super warm and welcoming. We got the matcha and a latte with the vegan Madagascar chocolate. The matcha was a little light for my liking, but the vegan chocolate sauce was TO DIE FOR! The best mocha sauce I've ever had, no doubt. Will be coming back!

Yelp
Excellent coffee and friendly service. Have several non-dairy milk options including oat and macadamia. Small case with bakery treats, and a small amount of gluten free options in a separate case. It is a very small space so would not be great for a large group, but is excellent for a solo or plus one to sit. Would absolutely recommend!

Yelp
I stopped by here on a girl's trip to duluth when we were all looking for some caffeine. The place itself is a little hard to find, and finding parking can be tough since it's a busy area. The place itself is very rustic and cozy, but it's pretty small. The staff were nice and they also had milk alternative options. All of us ordered different iced matchas since we weren't feeling coffee/espresso, but I definitely wish I ordered that instead. We all got different flavors (lavender, strawberry, etc.) but tbh it was all super watery and there wasn't a strong matcha taste. I'm kind of a matcha snob, but I probably wouldn't come back. Maybe the other drinks are better, though!

Yelp
Didn't love the coffee I ordered. I had bought a white chocolate mocha and it was very bitter. The workers were super sweet and the atmosphere was very industrial but welcoming!

Madelyn T.

Yelp
Visiting from out of state (Portland, OR)-- we were floored on how amazing the coffee was here! We have a really high standard and this genuinely tasted better than coffee we've had in the PNW. Owners clearly value making amazing coffee and it's not just some coffee shop for a cash grab. Will come back again when I am in the Twin Cities in the future!

Yelp
The local baker directed us to this small Cafe. Very friendly staff with a wide selection of coffee drinks and seasonal specialty drinks. I ordered an Americano; it was perfect. They also offer a selection of pastries from the local bakery.

Brittani S.

Yelp
I always like to go to a local coffe shop rather than a chain while traveling for work. Unfortunately, visiting this local coffee shop was a disappointing experience. Not only was the cold brew bitter and disgusting, but the staff was unfriendly. I was handed a full cup of cold brew with no lid (to-go) and when I asked for a lid, I was clearly an inconvenience to the employee. Would not recommend and would not stop again if I was in town.

Yelp
If you like your coffee lighter roasted this is the place for you. Cute lil shop with a fun staff. Small seating area inside and out. I personally like my coffee a medium roast with less fruity notes. I'd try it again with a different bean.

Sophia A.

Yelp
The baristas were so kind and helpful! They heavily enhanced the experience and feel of the cafe (waiting, etc.), not to mention everything was amazing :) I'd choose Ember over starbucks any day!

Yelp
I roll into this place about ten o'clock on a Tuesday. It's been raining and Hudson is chilly. I've got a bright red Yokosuka jumper on that's already drawn compliments today, from a vet's widow. I keep it on, even though the sun's starting to come out. You don't carry a jacket like this around. You wear it. I never order off the menu at coffee places. I'm sorry. I can't measure coffee in ounces. Who measures coffee in ounces? I order a single-shot dry cappuccino. The barista at the till doesn't know what this is, but the other one does. I look back at the girl ringing me up. She's got a leaf pin on her apron. It looks familiar. I ask what it is. It's a Lothlorien pin, from the The Lord of the Rings films. I remember now, and in my best Viggo Mortensen voice, I say, "The leaves of Lothlorien do not idly fall." She pretends to be impressed. I tell her I remember seeing those movies when they came out in the theater. I saw the first one on Guam, at the Micronesia Mall, when I was in high school, with a half-Korean girlfriend that didn't last the month. I know this makes me old. I feel old. I am old. I'm so old, now. I wish I were the exact same age as this barista, but it's been so long that it's hard for me to believe I ever was. Perhaps I never will be, again. The coffee comes in a ceramic mug that one might describe as "artisanal." It is so flavorful. It doesn't taste like a dark roast to me, which is a welcome surprise. I get little notes of chocolate--it tastes like something delicious I would want to chew for a while before swallowing, something I'd like to savor longer. I can't keep drinking these, one after the other, or my old heart will start beating too fast. I just get the one, and it turns into a memory before I can even take a picture, another memory that will probably fade away even before the memories of Guam, of a childhood spent abroad, of summer love and loss. I can see the river from my booth. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The coffee is excellent. Get coffee here if you're ever in Hudson.

Cody H.

Yelp
Couldn't recommend this place enough. Best speciality coffee I've had. At this point, I've tried everything on the self. Huge variety of carefully roasted beans and a beautiful atmosphere. You can tell Jess and the team prioritize their coffee and customer experience. They also source all their beans directly from farmers in developing countries. Their mission is larger than a cup of coffee. Great people, great coffee. 10/10.

Ame E.

Yelp
The coffee is excellent. The staff are a bit eccentric and loud. Not a place to get work done. one of the baristas sings opera music very loudly like he's auditioning for a role. recommend grab and go!
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
Great coffee, knowledgeable staff, fun location! It's all there. It was fun seeing how many people that popped in were already considered regulars. Definitely check it out! A little tucked away, so look hard!

Yelp
My new go-to for coffee in Hudson. Wonderful atmosphere and baristas are second to none. Best Mocha ever!

Cali C.

Yelp
Favorite local coffee shop around! I have yet to meet friendlier staff anywhere. They welcome you when you walk in and always when you leave. They aways create amazing drinks and have no trouble engaging in more Than small talk. The venue is small but cozy, and they cleared out more space for seating. I walk here every weekend for a lavender latte and have always left with it being the best part of my day.

Yelp
Ember and Bean's is excellent in every way. It's clear these folks are dedicated to the craft of roasting and making top tier coffee. Their latte's and pour overs are world class, some of my favorite I've ever had. The staff is so sweet and welcoming, the atmosphere is fresh and comfortable, they are creative with their seasonal latte flavors... I'd be here every day if it were closer to my home. Can't recommend it enough!

Joseph C.

Yelp
Great coffee and staff. Cozy place and the coffees at a good price. Hope they stay in hudson for a long time

Montie R.

Yelp
The place was the absolute cutest! Uplifting beat and great service. The coffee i had was absolutely amazing as well. Right next to the river too- couldnt get better than that

Tony B.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere and friendly service. Not a fan of their black roast coffee. Coffee was watery and bitter.

Min C.

Yelp
Exceptional coffee and great location! Bought some coffee to grind at home as well- quickly becoming a go-to spot!

Kathryn K.

Yelp
really cute!! super nice service!! good coffee!! kinda funky location but love the inside!!

Duke M.

Yelp
This is the best place to buy fresh roasted coffee to brew at home, or to have a cup in the store. Jessica is extremely knowledgeable and will recommend specific coffees based upon your preferences/tastes. Check it out in downtown Hudson, WI.

Jessi M.

Yelp
great coffee the worst staff. the guy who helped me insulted my perfume and yelled at my friends daughter. he was so rude and wrecked our entire experience.
