Best Cafes Between Portland and Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Olympia’s most stylish coffee shop, Ember Goods is part cafe and part boutique store, adorned with tons of gorgeous plants and minimalist decor. The shop also serves its own medium roast blend made at Rivers Coffee in Morton, Washington. Current seasonal drinks here include matchai, made with Portland’s One Stripe Chai, and house-made lavender syrup lattes." - Seiji Nanbu

Spiciest chai I've ever had. It was yummy. Even after I let it get cold outside, the drink still tasted warm from spices. Wife had the drip coffee and says it was really good also. Atmosphere is a neat outdoorsy shop and has a very similar vibe with Rivian the EV truck company. I had to look if co-owned. Not that I saw, but the coffee cart has been at some of the Rivian events. So cool! If you love the PNW you will love this shop local. If you like coloring or have kids that do, they have tons of neat coloring books.

Great place to sit with busy foot traffic in the morning. Great place to shop around a bit with a nature vibe. Such a cute selection. My iced latte was perfect. Good flavor. A great location in downtown Olympia. Would bring friends. 🌟⭐️ 5 stars all around.

Google
Love the coffee at Ember Goods. The coffee shop is super cute! They even have a little store inside (with clothes, notebooks etc.). The staff was super sweet. They also offer a variety of different milk alternatives.

So you know how some high end luxury shops now opening their own cafes and selling their goods inside with coffee? I'm talking about Cafe Kitsune (by Maison Kitsune), Louis Vuitton coffeeshop, Gucci restaurant (though this one doesnt sell their merch at restaurant). Well, I am pretty sure Ember Goods started that trend years ago, way before it became a thing. And what may have been an interesting concept is now successful model followed by many coffeeshops all around. Ember Goods is a small cozy coffeeshop located in downtown Olympia and they roast their own beans, and have been serving the area with excellent coffees for years. What's interesting with this cafe is that they have wide selection of Pacific Northwest themed apparel and gifts throughout the store, it feels like you're at Cabin camp. They have camping goods, flannels, greeting cards, mugs, and many goods by local artists/businesses too. I have tried their seasonal coffees as well as regular lattes and iced Americano and they have been fantastic. I always get their "morning dew" coffee bean bag its a light roast and its my go-to beans from here, I highly recommend it. The staff are extremely kind and they open early too so where can you get a great cup of coffee aaaand shop for gifts at this time of the day? I think they've nailed both sides of the store. Street parking on Washington or Capitol and walk over!

Google
Everything about this visit was fantastic except the coffee itself. Now, we didn’t sample every single thing on the menu. There’s plenty of other interesting things that sound like they’re worth trying. I got the blueberry espresso (Americano) which was fine. Kinda strange at first, but ultimately a new experience. My wife got the bullet and she thought it was fine. Despite the brown sugar and cinnamon, it wasn’t very sweet so it was a bit surprising is all. We’d go back. The crew was very kind and we loved the atmosphere. Maybe just try something different than we did!

Google
This family-owned coffee shop in the heart of downtown Olympia offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a casual coffee break or a relaxing afternoon with friends. Their coffee menu boasts some unique and delicious options, including match latte and lavender latte! The baristas were friendly and knowledgeable, happy to answer questions and offer recommendations. The interior was cozy and modern, with plenty of seating and natural light.

Google
Such a wonderful place in the heart of Washington state. Cozy interior filled with nice and warm things and great service. All the workers are friendly and professional. They make excellent tea and coffee. I haven’t try their sweets but I think they are good enough. Check out for sale items, you can find something special.

Yelp
A delicious spot in downtown Olympia- especially since batdorf closed years ago. It's fun to look around the store & sip an iced americano (my go to). They also have tasty baked goods I hope to try soon! Their seasonal drinks are amazing- if you're adventurous or like to experiment with coffee this is a great place to go or if you like it plain and simple like me they have you covered too :)

Yelp
Just accidentally discovered this gem when I parked smack dab in front of the place. Went in and had a delicious coffee and one of the Bread Peddler's croissants with feta and carmelized onion (my favorite). I then strolled around to see their nice offerings and got ideas about what to buy for my Grands. Yayyyyy!

Yelp
I loved this coffee shop so much that I went back 2 days in a row! I was out in Olympia on a work trip. One of my favorite things while on work trips is visiting local coffee shops. I have tried multiple in Olympia and this one is by far the best one. The coffee is delicious and the pastries are delivered every morning. I also found it challenging to find a coffee shop open early, this one opened at 7am. Can't wait for my next trip out west, I will be back!

Yelp
I received a gift card for Mother's Day for Ember Goods and being fairly new to the area I had driven by many times and thought it would be nice to check it out. I'm sorry it took so long to go in! It was quite busy, the baristas were very friendly and quick. The menu was definitely unique and I had an amazing cold brew, Blueberry Pie! Lots of great things (merchandise) to browse through and if I had more money I would have spent it! Lol there is limited seating inside and if the weather was better I'd have sat outside. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
With comfortable indoor seating, including the bar stools, and a creative seasonal menu, this place is easily my favorite place to sit and enjoy coffee in Olympia. They may not have much food to offer but there's a lot of eateries nearby to grab a bite at. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find a cafe that doesn't just give you a disposable cup and send you on your way. This place feels very welcoming. It's the overall vibe and that's the kind of place that makes me want to just sit and breathe and be. Prepare yourself to want to spend money on all of the Washington inspired cute kich, especially if you're looking for gifts.

Yelp
Nice boutique shop with yummy coffee! Clothing is nice and size inclusive which is so amazing in a smaller store like this. (Up to 3x from what I saw!) some items are a little spendy, it's no thrift store! But that isn't their fault. Check it out!

Chris S.

Yelp
Coffee taste like they don't clean their machines, customer service was nonexistent. a real letdown

Yelp
Stopped in here while walking around town on our first weekend here. This place was so cute! The baristas were welcoming and chatted with us about some of the good coffee in town and made some recommendations. The coffee was delicious and the shop that's inside had some very cute items! Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a tad obsessed with the red latte! Roobios tea and house made vanilla milk make this the perfect latte and after trying it for the first time just last week, I'm back already for another! This time I even made it a tall boy rather than my usual medium. The team here is super friendly and they work quickly. Today my husband ordered the nitro cold brew with vanilla and cream. This was pure perfection as well and we watched as the creaminess slowly fused together. They are experts in a good cup of joe. I was also checking out the coffee beans along the wall and they have really amazing sounding varieties. I didn't get a bag and I'm already regretting it. I guess another visit is coming up!
google avatar

Stacey S.

Yelp
I truly love this coffee shop. The vibe, the personality of EVERY barista (they are all kind, fun, compassionate, professional). I love the beautiful green plants everywhere, the mercantile, the fun stickers and clothes. The seasonal drinks are delicious but just a regular latte here is delicious - the perfect pull for a great cups of coffee. I appreciate that they have a restroom onsite and places where I can sit and plug in if I'm working.
google avatar

Yelp
Ember Goods offers coffee and various good from clothing to trinkets and more. They sell a few articles of clothing from the Brixton brand which immediately caught my attention. Prices are on the higher end for apparel but I personally didn't mind as the quality was also much higher than average. They have a fitting room with a single stall and it's a bit of a hidden gem. I recommend stopping in, maybe trying on a t-shirt or spring inspired outfit, and grabbing a drink on your way out.
google avatar

Branden S.

Yelp
Excellent cafe! Yesterday I got the Honey Cinnamon Latte which was perfect - strong and sweet and had a good lingering flavor that made the world seem right for an hour. Today I got the Creamsicle Latte, tastes like sophisticated childhood and even has a nice orange peel garnish, which was a special touch. The atmosphere is comfortable and bright, clever merch to consider while here too.
google avatar

Madison C.

Yelp
There are very few coffee shops like this one. I pride myself on the fact that I have a very high standard for the quality of coffee and the ambiance of the actual shop. It's hard to find shops that have both in this area but Ember Goods does. I can say I've driving 10-20 minute out of the way on many occasions for exactly those reasons. If you want to experience the PNW in one stop this would be it!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic little coffee shop in downtown Olympia! The coffee drinks are absolutely fantastic here and the pastries which are always a weakness of mine... we're delicious. I had a great tasting Niro Cold Brew and my pastry was an almond pastry. Very good! If you encounter a line going up to the front counter it is totally worth your time. But it doesn't stop there. There is art and a small clothing area which is a lot of fun. Both for men and women! I know these cute little shops devote themselves to women's clothes but you can get both here which makes this place all the more special!
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
I was working in the area for several months and this became my go to coffee place! It's also a retail store that sells a lot of fun items and goods for kids, which I really appreciated with limited shopping options in downtown Olympia. However, it's a full-fledged coffee shop with tables and chairs inside and out and a fantastic menu, so it is definitely a destination if you're looking for a place to meet for coffee. They always have specials, so I really appreciated the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and experience something great!

Yelp
Stopped by Ember Goods for some coffee on the way back home and had a great experience for my first time ever visiting. This shop is very cozy and the overall ambiance is lovely. They serve coffee, pastries + the retail shop has great quality clothing with different outdoorsy themed items throughout. I tried their iced vanilla latte with cream cheese cold foam and it was amazing. The baristas working were very friendly and one of the drinks we ordered didn't get made which eventually we realized we didn't get charged for it either, but the barista made it for us with no problem. We were ready to pay for the missing drink, but she gave it to us free of charge which was really unexpected and kind. Overall: amazing shop and I will come again whenever I am in the area. I love that they have house made vanilla syrup also.
google avatar

Noureena M.

Yelp
This cozy place offers some great alternative to coffee. I had an oat milk hot beverage with turmeric and ginger sugar free vanilla caramel drizzle delicious. Going back to sure.
google avatar

Marie R.

Yelp
I had to go to Olympia for business one time and decided to get coffee nearby! What a find! I got their honey cinnamon latte (HCL)with oat milk and it was so yummy! I also got one of their specials but I forgot the name already coz the honey cinnamon latte was just so yummy! They also sell travel/camping/clothing items! They're all so cute that I had to control myself from buying a lot! I did get a travel journal which allots two pages for each state where you can describe details about your visit to each state. I went back here and got the HCL with oat milk again and it tasted just as it did the last time! Talk about consistency!
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
So cute and had some really creative and festive holiday drink choices. Loved all the cute clothes and local goods you can purchase from the store area inside! The staff was super kind and helpful. Definitely will go there again when in Olympia!
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
This is my favorite place in Olympia to get coffee since I first started coming here 2 years ago!! All of their standard drinks are amazing, but I love trying their seasonal drinks and they all taste incredible. I highly recommend this place if you ever want a good cup of coffee in Olympia. I love that they have a shop to the side with cute/beautiful items for purchase. The place has beautiful/fun vibes
google avatar

Yelp
My partner and I were coming back from visiting Ocean Shores and decided to take a break in Olympia since I've never been there before. We wanted a coffee so we looked up the highest rated shop- Ember Goods. The photos looked promising and we were only a block away so we paid for street parking and walked down the street. Instantly I loved the clean, nature focused aesthetic. He got the PB&J latte and I got the Cream Cheese Cold Brew. We also split an apple fritter. The coffee was delicious and the fritter was unlike any other I've had before. Normally they can be dense and doughy at times, but this one was lighter and had a little crisp texture that was so good! Easily in my top 10 coffee shop/cafe experiences and a must if you need to stop in Olympia!

Yelp
This visit to Ember Goods was part of a rainy, spontaneous early AM road trip from Shoreline to Olympia (5/23/21, posted 8/22/21). I had already bought pastries and a mocha from two other spots. This indie spot came up on Yelp with a curious description as cafe, coffee roaster, and men's clothing. So why not? I just ordered a cortado. I recall that the barista a bit frosty and cortado was just okay. Initial impressions do make a difference. This one was not particular favorable, hence three stars plus one for surviving the pandemic. Enough said.

Yelp
Atmosphere at this place is very cozy. I love the vibes of the seating area paired with the variety of goods they have for sale. Specialty drink options were interesting, and I'm sure anyone could find something they'd enjoy here.
google avatar

Haley O.

Yelp
My all time favorite coffee place. You can never go wrong with anything off the menu. Their seasonal drinks are always killer. I love that they have PNW clothing + stickers + pins. I never leave without at least 3 stickers! Don't forget to try their baked goods too, the rice krispies are this perfect blend of sweet and salty... SO SO so good!!
google avatar

Kelley S.

Yelp
Whatever I ordered here was amazing! It was a cinnamon honey something. Wow. They staff was so nice and they have nice merchandise to browse while you wait.
google avatar

Whitney H.

Yelp
The environment was cozy and outdoorsy with their rustic mountain art and beautiful plants. The coffee (honey cinnamon latte) was very good!
google avatar

Maddie G.

Yelp
Had an iced honey cinnamon latte with hemp milk and it was delicious, balanced and not too sweet. Great cozy ambiance with cute clothes and gifts to shop for and the baristas were nice. Fun spring specials too which i'll try next time :-)
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Much better now that Covid has settle and is just a lousy part of our lives. The staff on this visit was very nice and interactive. The quality and effort put into the coffee is really good and shows expertise. The store is full of cute items that made my wife swoon and provides a nice and clean stop in a rather rough part of town. Now we will stop there every time.
google avatar

Brenna H.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee place. I've gone here twice now on the way through the area and have enjoyed it both times. They have oat milk (yay!) and always unique seasonal offerings. I got a brown sugar oat milk latte today that was a Cuban style, which I hadn't heard before. They also have fun stuff to shop, like shirts, cards, sweaters, chocolates, etc. The coffee was really good and the staff was really accommodating for my allergies! Highly recommend.

A S.

Yelp
The merchandise was really nice. The ambience was really nice. We ended up buying two reusable cups. But I had to knock the review down a star because the interaction I had with the barista wasn't nice. I asked her what teas would be good but she got pretty impatient with me really quickly. But my sister had a good interaction with her.
google avatar

Yelp
Love ember goods coffee. Amazing little downtown coffee shop with cozy seating and lots of mech to dazzle your eye. Come and chill and pick up some local merch and support your local coffee shop.

Rosie D.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere and decor, and the customer service is always great. My friends and I love to get drinks here whenever we're downtown. However, there isn't always enough seating inside for all of us, so we either take our drinks to go or share a couple chairs
google avatar

Alyson M.

Yelp
My favorite Coffee shop and NW goods store in Olympia- we always make a point of stopping in when we're driving through Olympia. Coffee is delicious, staff are wonderful, the vibe is very cozy and welcoming, and there's such a fantastic selection of clothes, books, art and houseware for the whole family to enjoy.
google avatar

Tee P.

Yelp
Visiting for the week and walked by. Cool concept for a coffee shop, the space was clean and had a nice ambience. We got the oat milk latte and autumn latte. The autumn latte was so delicious, creamy and had a warm cozy feeling when drinking it. I liked that it was caffeine free too. I came back 3 times while here to get this drink, I've never seen it anywhere else!
google avatar

Theresa D.

Yelp
Some of the best coffee around and I don't normally like coffee! Super cute store and nice baristas. They have clothing and camping items and stickers for sale as well as coffee and pastries. Would recommend 100%.
google avatar

Sydney A.

Yelp
I absolutely love ember goods! I don't live near Olympia, so anytime I'm even remotely close to the area, I make sure to stop in. The shop is clean, the staff is attentive and friendly, and the beverages are wonderful. The last time I went in there were a couple of seasonal options that I couldn't pick between, and the two baristas were absolute delights and were patient with my slow-decision-making self. A difficult feat, just ask my partner. On top of all this, the owners are extremely kind and it makes supporting local feel THAT much more sweet. Cheers to many more coffees here in the future! :)
google avatar

Joo Sung K.

Yelp
Great Iced americano, and fun to shop the camping/outdoor goods part of the store. FYI there is no A/C, only a fan at the cafe entrance
google avatar

Eve H.

Yelp
Had an awesome experience coming here with my mom. My mom does not drink coffee or caffeinated tea, so she had the Montana Gold as a tea latte. She loved it. I had the honey cinnamon latte and came back today to have it again. It's kind of like drinking a grown-up version of French Toast Crunch. The vibe is warm and inviting. Lots of plants make it a place I want to return to over and over again. Merchandise is pricey (e.g., $42 for a T-shirt) but good quality.
google avatar

Haley G.

Yelp
My all time favorite coffee place. You can never go wrong with anything off the menu. Their seasonal drinks are always killer. I love that they have PNW clothing + stickers + pins. Yelp
Cute place with outdoor vibes. Good coffee and teas and very nice employees. More of a gift shop meets coffee shop. But I did end up with a PNW sticker designed by a local artist. So that was cool.
google avatar

Mollie H.

Yelp
Stopped in this morning out of curiosity on my quick trip into town. Born and raised in Olympia but no longer living here. I originally wanted to try it for the name alone. Ember goods had some holiday flavors I wanted to try and was pointed in the direction of 'cookie butter'. Now I have to go back later and get another because it's so good
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop and boutique with outdoorsy stuff, some locally made. The ladies working behind the counter were friendly and efficient. My matcha and my hubby's cappuccino were both very good and reasonably priced. There's not a lot of seating, but most people seemed to be taking their drinks to go so there was plenty available.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
It tasted like a french or dark roast coffee, which for my personal preferences is not good because it overpowers any other nuances in the coffee. Nothing particular stands out in the coffee, but nothing offensive either. Metered street parking, nice little shop, there were some people having coffee in the shop, a strange layout that is not ideal for social distancing during COVID. They do tape off the ground to show 6 feet from the counter and the barista wears a mask.
google avatar

Elizabeth U.

Yelp
Such an amazing addition to downtown Olympia. You'll enjoy a truly PNW experience at Ember Goods. Wonderful coffee, quite but friendly staff, beautiful plants, PNW gear, and a quite beautiful place to do some work or meet friends. I had an oat milk latte and it was very well made, and delicious.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Y'allllll. Excuse the language but holy shit. This is it. This is peak PNW. I was in the Olympia area visiting some close friends of mine and we were in the area for the farmer's market and berry festival. One of my friends kept raving about the coooolest coffee shop and just had to show me. He was right. Coolest coffee shop / store ever. You walk in and you automatically feel so lame if you're not ready for the most intense Instagram photoshoot of your life. There's so many photo ops here it's intimidating. There's so many cool PNW products to buy here. My fiancé actually ended up buying the coolest Rainier hoodie from here and we just came for coffee. If you're coming here for coffee and not to be mesmerized by how amazing this place is, you're still going to walk away super happy. I went with an iced Lavender Vanilla Latte. I'm a huge lavender fan, smell AND taste, and when I saw it was a syrup that they make in-house, I had to try it. Perfection. The lavender hits you at the beginning and the taste is finished with that smooth vanilla we all love. Honestly, it's something I could drink everyday. Probably the best rendition of a lavender flavored drink I've had anywhere. Kudos, Ember Goods! You're awesome.
google avatar

Kelvin Y.

Yelp
Near the Capitol in Olympia, Washington. Great space with a great vibe. Nicely furnished including cool reclaimed tables and chairs. A nice large sofa. The Latte we ordered was perfectly prepared - delicious! Service was fast, friendly and efficient.
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Such a cute, trendy spot downtown! I came in for an afternoon coffee but they also have clothing and nicknacks to check out while you wait for your drinks. My coworker and I walked from up the street where we were working and went with the orange mocha and turmeric mylk (dirty). Such unique flavor to the mocha and the turmeric mylk were on point. We also got the toffee chocolate chip cookie which didn't disappoint for an afternoon pick me up. This place is definitely on the pricer side as we ended up spending around $18 for 2 drinks and a cookie but you could tell they put love and real ingredients in their products. Would definitely recommend this place!!!
google avatar

Nicholas D.

Yelp
Fun spot Service is solid Quality is really good Prices fair The retail concept doesn't completely make sense - that needs work

Yelp
Drove from Seattle a few weeks ago just to see this place! We've been following the owners for some time now because of their art. We were NOT disappointed. The coffee shop has an incredible atmosphere, very welcoming and warm. The coffee is delicious and they provide multiple options for milks. The cafe itself is decorated with the owners art as well as art from many local artists. Along with coffee they also sell many locally made items. This is the kind of coffee shop you comes to the PNW to see. Forever wishing this place was a little closer but for now trips to Olympia will have to do!
