The Best Wine to Drink With Pizza

"If I really want to splurge, I go for Emidio Pepe ($145) — the big-ticket option that is described as age-worthy and “dead sexy,” offering a more serious, long-lived expression of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo when you feel like indulging." - Vanessa Price

We had an amazing stay at Emidio Pepe! Truly welcoming service for us and our Australian Shepherd. The estate is beautiful, and the rooms are very comfortable. We loved the guided tour, the tasting and the menu. If you are a wine enthusiast, this is a must-do. With the vineyards unique approach to winemaking, you get to taste something truly authentic and unforgettable. We also loved that everything at dinner and breakfast was house-made. Thank you for the wonderful time!

Absolutely amazing experience. A 'real' Italian experience in Abruzzo. Well appointed accommodations with adequate space. The seven course meal and wine tasting was exceptional, starting with the tour of the winery and production and leading to the dinner on the patio over looking the vineyard. The unique approach, commitment, and success of Emidio Pepe in producing excellent and aged Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is both an education and sensory experience. Staff are extremely warm and professional with clear focus on service. Giuseppe stood out for us in particular for his service, as he welcomed us the first day and was present the entire time of our stay, including proving our English speaking tour of the winery and production. Italian breakfast served each morning on the patio overlooking the vineyard and olive groves with the Apennine Mountains in the distance, included local meats, cheese, juices, espresso/cappuccino and pastries. Wish we were still there!

Amazing Setting, Wine, Food, and People We spent two nights at the farm house and our only misstep was not eating there both nights. Emidio Pepe is firstly a vineyard, and their care for their wine is second to none. The cellar tour, decanting process, and limited selection each demonstrate the commitment to releasing wine only when it is ready and allowing each vintage to define itself. The tasting with dinner (I went for the five wine tasting) was some of the most enjoyable wine I tasted on this trip. The food was hearty, delicious, and traditional - a meal I think about even now, months later. The kitchen is skilled (and accommodating to dietary restrictions), the service was delightful and timely, the whole experience left me wishing to stay at the table for another glass and more conversation, as it should be. And, of course, it is a family owned and operated business, with at least three generations on the property and operating various aspects, each fully versed in the agriculture, wine-making, and everything Abruzzo. Friends introduced us - I look forward to returning with them, and intend to bring more friends. Update: we went back, and love it again! Somehow the second experience was even better. The food continues to be truly outstanding, the wine exceptional, and the setting serene. We noticed subtle improvements around the farmhouse, increasing comforts in small ways. As always, the family members operating the Agriturismo were knowledgeable about developments in the area and ready to connect us to other places in the community where we could have good food and wine experiences. And the mattress and pillows were the best we experienced in all of our accommodation in Italy - a surprise we still find amusing, given how much we enjoy every other aspect of our stay (even the pillows are great!).

We just loved this agriturismo located at a winery in the Abruzzo Region. The views were even better than Tuscany - luscious rolling hills, mountains, and a short drive from a view of the sea. The personal wine tour and dinner were amazing; it was also fun to learn about the generations running this winery and see the founder at a special event. We were married in 1983 and saw vintage wine bottles in storage matching that year. We used the pool, enjoying the view and a very tasty bottle of red wine, but it's prettier than functional. The breakfast was excellent, with a small fee for omelettes. We were also lucky to see and play with a very cute puppy. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. I rarely go back to the same place, but I would go back here. I've been to Italy 6 times, and this place is in my top 3.

Emidio Pepe is renowned for its wine but even if you're not wine crazed, this is just an absolutely charming, perfect spot for couples, friends, and families alike. ||The rooms are simple with no bells and whistles, but the environment and service more than make up for it. As a family business, you can feel their love and care in every moment of hospitality. The meals were great (made all the better with their |precious wines) and the views truly priceless. ||This is simplicity at its finest. I definitely hope to return.

Incredible experience, delicious food, complex wines, comfortable overnight room and impeccable service. Emidio Pepe is an amazing gem. The views were breathtaking, and everything felt so luxe. The beds and the overnight room were large and comfortable. Dinner & wine pairing was top notch. 7 courses with options on wine flights of 3,5 or 7. We will definitely be back.

Words can't describe the level of joy and serenity one meets when visiting the Agriturismo. Absolutely SUPERB. Rooms are beautiful and have a very clean design, with definitely the most comfortable bed I ever slept in. Hospitality- off the charts. The place and staff invite you to stop the clock and surrender to relaxation. We also had their special set menu dinner - amazing, creative and delicious. Special thanks to Micol who hosted us with grace and perfection. An absolute must!

It started wrong on the day of arrival. They organised a presentation in Italian about biological grains and invited their friends/business partners. During the presentation, which was held outside, we were asked if our children could be more quiet at the pool. Since our kids are young, this is impossible, so we were forced to stay in our appartment for 2 hours, without any balcony while the sun was shining... a bad start. In the evening they continued drinking and having fun with their friends and we did not feel welcome and there was no interaction with us. Overall I must say that this is not a child friendly place, as there are many couples and you feel unpleasant when your kids make noise. Also during our stay we were never asked if things were fine or if we wanted some tips or have a wine tasting (they produce their own wine). Also there is no restaurant and you expect one when reading the description of the agriturismo on booking. Finally the breakfast was not in line with continental standards. Only on day 5 we found out that we could order eggs (not informed). Unfortunately our least and most expensive experience in Italy this Holiday. The positive things must also be mentioned: amazing surroundings, very good daily cleaning, airconditioning and overall kind staff.
