Empanada Specialists Open Sunny North Park Kitchen | Eater San Diego

"Starting out as a vendor at the North Park Farmer’s Market in 2016, Empanada Kitchen — co-founded by Matias Rigali and Dan Housenga and based on Rigali’s family recipes — is returning to the neighborhood to open a second storefront, debuting Monday, September 23, in the same El Cajon Boulevard corner complex as The Heart & Trotter Butchery; its first shop opened in February 2018 in downtown San Diego. The casual, North Park eatery centers around handmade, baked empanadas with core and seasonal flavors ranging from traditional beef served with chimichurri sauce to ham and cheese, braised lamb, and vegan ratatouille, and also offers salad and alfajores (delicate Argentine cookies filled with dulce de leche). Empanada Kitchen operates a wholesale arm supplying local cafes including Bump Coffee Roasters in Cardiff and Jaunt Coffee Roasters in Miramar, and the partners say they will continue to focus on wholesale while exploring more shop locations. Hours are 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Saturday; the North Park eatery will start serving beer and wine later this fall, and a grand opening party is scheduled for Friday, October 4." - Candice Woo

What a fantastic, cozy find!! From the moment we walked in we were warmly welcomed by the staff (a sweet lady), & the delicious & juicy empanadas (chicken, beef, etc), & alfajores (shortbread cookie pie with dulce de leche filling)!! And, the Humm Mango Passionfruit kombucha was so good!! We’ll definitely be back for more Argentinian food!!

Been here several times, Amazing Empanadas!!!! It was my moms choice for her mothers day breakfast. The new sausage flavor was our favorite today, she had to go back for another.

I ordered 6 dozen frozen empanadas to bake at home for my party for appetizers for ~50 people and thought there would be leftovers but they were all gone! They were a huge hit. Guests really loved them and said they were all delicious. I love how many vegetarian options there were. My favorite is the mushroom and goat cheese. Super easy to order and pick up. Lovely service. Tasty food. What more can you ask for?!

Wow. This place is amazing. Not only are the Empanadas the best I've had in San Diego (so far) but the staff is absolutely loving and gracious. I will FIGHT anyone who Karen's these fine people. Please please come through. The love they put into their food is apparent and you will feel it and taste it too. Each empanada is folded in a unique shape and they give you a cute card that shows you which unique fold is which flavor. Great food. Great people. These are the kind of restaurants we should be supporting. All the best Empanada Kitchen! ♥️

The young lady behind the counter needs smiling lessons, seeming annoyed that we were interupting her screen time. When we got home, we found that 2 of our 6 empanadas were not ones we'd ordered. The empanadas were good but not great. I've had them elsewhere with more abundant filling.

My experience here was nothing less than otherworldly. My order was graciously taken. The empanadas handed to me in a beautiful vessel of love with regular-level spicy sauce. And the taste, oh the taste. Simply unfathomable flavor combinations. My mind and soul surpassed known levels of consciousness as I aggressively consumed empanada after empanada. Lamb? Yes please. Ratatouille? Thank you very much. Goat cheese and mushroom? Do NOT mind if I do. And again and again. Grotesque was the amount of pleasure my mouth received. I cannot recommend more. I will be back.

The braised lamb was so cheap! It was only almost 5 dollars! I was going to get the eggs and bacon but it was only for breakfast so I got lamb, and I'm happy I did. Braising the lamb made it tender and juicy, and the onions really added to the flavor. The crust was also flaky and buttery. If you go here, I recommend you get the lamb.

Phenomenal empanadas! The sweet corn and basil was the best. Then the mushroom and goat cheese came second. The empanadas were kept in a heater so they were served warmed. The crust was crunchy but not too dry. I am not too big of a fan of meat so I didn't taste the meat ones.
