The Portland Restaurant Closings to Know, June 2024 - Eater Portland

"Emperor Georgiou’s, Kenton’s BIPOC-owned, Star Trek-themed tea room, has closed permanently." - Janey Wong

Where to Sip Soothing Teas in Portland

"What was once the cozy, lace-and-porcelain-filled tea shop Lovejoy’s on Northeast Killingsworth has been reborn as the Star Trek-themed Emperor Georgiou’s Tea Room in Kenton. The location, decor, and de-emphasis on the imagery (and implications) of Victorian England may have changed, but the commitment to a lavish-but-accessible afternoon tea experience remains constant. Reserve ahead for a $35 per person tea service, complete with a bottomless pot of tea, scones, tea sandwiches, muffins, and more. Teas range from chai and earl grey to caffeine free herbal blends." - Nathan Williams, Eater Staff

Where to Drink and Dine in Portland’s Kenton Neighborhood

"A recent transplant from Northeast Killingsworth, Emperor Georgiou has undertaken more than a mere location swap — the formerly English-style Lovejoy’s traded in for a whole new identity as the Star Trek-themed Emperor Georgiou’s Tea Room. The Victorian-era lace has been replaced by a retro-futuristic 1960s-inspired aesthetic, placing Trek’s core values of globalism and anti-racism at the heart of the rebrand. Lovejoy’s regulars can be assured the tea is still top notch. Book a simple Georgiou Tea Service for a quiet afternoon with a friendly captain, or reunite with all your shipmates over a decadent Uhura Tea Service, including soup, sandwiches, pastries, and bottomless tea." - Nathan Williams

Where to Enjoy an Elegant Afternoon Tea in Portland

"Formerly Lovejoy’s Tea Room, Emperor Georgiou’s recently relocated to the Kenton neighborhood. The tea room takes its name from a Star Trek character, who shares a surname with owners Brendon and Wellington Georgiou. Here, diners enjoy the Uhura tea service (or Tribble tea service for children 12 and under), which includes a bottomless pot of tea and vegan crumpets from the tea room’s sister business the Crumpany. Emperor Georgiou’s offers tea service with gluten-free, vegan, or dairy-free options for an additional fee." - Janey Wong

I have never felt so well taken care of at a restaurant of any kind! Heather, our server, offered to bring us a larger chair for our larger friend. They added glitter to our tea so that we could see the stars, brought us matching cups according to the colors of our tea, and was just an overall joy. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. This is the best tea room experience I've ever had. Oh! And the food! Everything we tried was so scrumptious. The teas were delightful. They had so many offerings for different dietary restrictions too.

Fun way to spend time with family or friends or both. Beautiful tea room with amazing vegetarian and vegan food options along with great teas to try. Ventured out today for a morning tea and totally enjoyed our brunch. Fantastic service and the teas are wonderful. The mini sandwiches are a nice treat and the pastries and scones are so tasty and fresh. Had a wonderful time today, we will return.

Google
The staff and atmosphere were wonderful. They were attentive and patient with us while we chose our tea. The tea was phenomenal - they have curated a fun and delicious list. The missing star comes from the food in general - it was catered toward vegan and gluten free pallettes which is fine, but none of it wowed me. The "meat" in the sandwich was a fun mushroom composition but the sandwich was kinda dry around the edges/wasn't filled well so you got a lot of just bread bites and the scone was dry and hard. Their sides, though, were delicious - this includes the two jams and clotted cream to go with the scones and crumpets. The amount of food was surprisingly filling but I was disappointed in the amount of tea you get for one person (32oz French press) since they said the tea was bottomless. I couldn't even finish one French press so I wasn't able to try more teas. I wish they'd advertised that they sold their tea by itself like I saw in another review, or that the server mentioned this when I asked where they got their tea from, because the Silent Night was amazing and I would have loved some for home. Overall it was a fun experience though.

My husband and I loved our experience here today. Everything from the tea, to the food, to the service, to the decor all were wonderful. The entire service is very reasonably priced for what you get. Be sure to reserve a table. The entire establishment only has about 10 tables and tea service takes at least an hour per group. I had the amazing purple rain tea and the fruity notes paired extremely well with the jams that came with the tea service. I was worried that I was going to still be hungry afterwards but the food was not only delicious but perfectly filling. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a cozy and whimsical experience with their tea and crumpets.

Met with some friends for tea. We had reservations for 4 and everyone had a good time. The tea was excellent and they had many options. I really appreciated the gluten free service they offered. All the tea snacks were great. The service was great and we all had a lot of fun.

Google
Delicious teas and foods and so filling. Really great atmosphere. They have tea to go, too. We got the Linzbery cookie tea and Milky Way Oolong, and brought home the Purple Rain. Great staff but a little slow this morning. And when you go to the bathroom, it’s a cool walkway with Alice in Wonderland murals!! Would def go back!

Google
First off, the staff, vibe, and tea are amazing, and I would *absolutely* come here again to drink tea! The 3 star review is only for the gluten free food, but since food is a major part of the service, AND you're up-charged for GF food, I feel like the GF food should be good. Honestly, there's no excuse for bad GF food in Portland. The finger sandwiches were SOOOO dry. Like. I don't know if the GF bread was majorly stale or what, but even with the faint smattering of the filling (which was delicious), I couldn't swallow the sandwich. With such good GF bakeries like New Cascadia in the same city, there is no excuse for gross, stale GF bread. Also, there is no excuse for just how little filling there was in the sandwiches, as I peeked over and saw the normal sandwiches had a good amount of filling. You can see in the photo that they were mostly bread, no filling. I ate one tiny sandwich with a gulping of tea to get it down, but I left the rest. While the finger sandwiches were bone dry, the crumpet was very undercooked. Like. It was just wet dough inside, and it stuck to my teeth as I tried eating it. Ick. I ate two bites and was done. The scones were American style (hard) and had a very similar flavor profile to the cake. I wish they didn't taste so similar! But both of these were fine, and I loved that they had vegan clotted cream, (though it reminded me more of whipped cream than traditional English clotted cream). Staff was very kind and gave us a 10% discount, and we did love the tea so much that we bought some to take home. But the food? Sorry, really bad and definitely wasn't worth the price.

My first visit to Emperor Georgiou's Team Room. The indoor decor is very eclectic - space age modern with huge star trek (Discovery) murals on the walls, a quote from Nichelle Nichols, an Alice in Wonderland painted bathroom - with all food being served on traditional english china while 80's music plays. It's a unique experience. We opted for a small outdoor table in a quiet, shady spot on the sidewalk. We had selected Georgiou Tea (cream tea service with scone or crumpets). Instead of a traditional teapot, we were each provided a large french press. All three of us enjoyed our tea selections very much - Lady Grey with Lavender, Cherry Almond, and Black Wolf (from a local tea company). We would all order them again. The peach scones were delicious, though a little small and served with clotted cream and apricot jam. I would have enjoyed a second one :) The crumpets were served with lemon curd and butter. I tried one and it was nice, but the scone was more satisfying (personal taste). Our server was charming and attentive and we smiled at the use of a star trek paperback as the holder for the check. I would return for cream tea service.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but it wasn't, ahem, my cup of tea. I LOVE the ambiance of the place which has been thoroughly described. There is a lot of attention to detail and the space and decor are simply gorgeous. The tea itself was good with excellent presentation in copper French presses. The downside of that is that they were so big that it was hard to finish our "pot." Why feel pressure to finish - because if you need refills, apparently you can try a different tea on the second round. Luckily, in our big group, I was able to try a couple different teas. The service was friendly and no negatives. But we had a large group and when our side of the table asked for milk, it was provided, but no one checked if the rest of the table wanted it and we kept having to pass it up and down the table. For many, this might be no big deal or if you're at a table for 2, but I literally had to wait or interrupt conversations to get milk over and over again (tiny tea cups). I really liked the crumpets and that's the best I can say about the food. I ate it all, nothing was actually objectionable and I was pretty hungry, but I wouldn't want to go again.

Yelp
I had a friend host an event at Emperor Georgiou's Tea Room this past weekend. The interior of the tea room was pretty eclectic..with a Star Trek theme. I appreciated that they had vegan options, a friend that is vegetarian and I shared this option. For my tea selection I got the Risa-berry Linzer Cookie..it was delicious! We were given a non dairy milk to put in our tea. I don't normally put milk in my tea, but I tried it, and it was pretty good, I must say. We were given sandwiches, crumpet with clotted cream, 2 different jams, vegan butter. Scones, a chocolate brownie. Food was good. Tea was excellent. I was asked from the host to bring cash, since they only provide one check. We were each asked to put $20 down when the reservation was made. So I owed about $30 towards the check. I didn't have time to go to the bank, but had a $50 bill on me. I asked the staff if I could get it broken, but they don't do that. Luckily I was seeing the person paying the bill on her credit card the next day, I was able to get change for that $50! Overall, it was an enjoyable experience!

Yelp
Came to tea here with my daughter. Not sure if this is always the case, but an unmistakeable Star Trek theme, with a giant all wall mural of the Starship Enterprise and many of the food and drink options named in an homage to the franchise. The tea service we ordered came with an excellent edamame hummus, small tea sandwiches and several excellent petite sweets. Price point was high and the food was ok but certainly not plentiful, i'm not sure if the price point is with a mind to a Star Trek audience.

Yelp
We came here for a work party, several of us are Trekkies. I personally watched. Season and 1/2 of Star Trek discovery before coming and it made it all the more fun. The food was fresh and delicious and the extensive tea list gave everyone the chance to be bold (chestnut tea?) or to go with something standard (earl gray with lavender.) I liked having a set time to arrive and depart. We were given a little leeway. The service was attentive and knowledgeable. I will definitely return!

Yelp
It was easy to make a reservation and everyone working here was very friendly. Personally I don't care for the Star Trek theme. The two teas we got were very mild and not impressive. The food was fine but overall overpriced. I'm glad we checked this place out but there are way better options in Portland.
google avatar

Clare Q.

Yelp
This was a nice option for anyone who loves Star Trek or just enjoys afternoon tea. But while I am glad to have gone for the novelty of it, this is an overpriced experience for the quality of the food served. The food is essentially a children's lunch: veggies with chipotle bean dip, soft bread veggie sandwiches with chipotle mayo, some very chewy crumpets with butter and lemon curd and a weird cookie with a fruit tart. I was pretty disappointed with the menu but the execution did not help matters. My suggestions: have a smaller tea stand for the smaller tea service so it looks better, offer a berry jam with the crumpet instead of butter or offer clotted cream, and get rid of the cookie. It's not good. Interesting concept, beautiful murals, and fun touch with the bill being delivered in a book...but it was otherwise a bust.

Yelp
Just finished eating here with my Wife and everything was great. The teas were wonderful and the selection of sandwich/pastries were so tasty. Customer service was good and the art inside was super cool!

Yelp
They were called Lovejoy's Tea Room previously then around end of November or early December 2022 they changed locations and re-opened under a new location, name etc. I had a group of 8 experience this place when they were Lovejoy's and everything about it was pretty amazing, 5 stars. A group of 7 of us went to the new location and it was like night and day. First off... they really push that you arrive on time because there are table time limits and also require a hefty deposit. We were there 25 minutes ahead of time and didn't get seated until almost 15 minutes past our reservation time. Service was very slow and things weren't plated as pretty as before. The ambiance was totally off! I don't know whose idea it was to paint the walls in a Star Trek theme.... what??? They used the same mismatch floral tea cups/saucers/plates but ditched the beautiful floral tea pots for copper colored french presses which totally made the tea way to strong. Nobody liked their tea. The food was also different. We had the Burnham Tea Service ($35) and it started with Potato Leek soup. The soup was like sludge...cold and it was awful. When you use a starch for soup you need to be on top of it because it will become way too starchy. The cucumber/cream cheese finger sandwiches were tasteless. They must of ran out of bread because they used one slice of white and one slice of wheat bread with the cream cheese in the middle. Come on... it's not hard to whip spices and/or veggies in the cream cheese to make it yummy. The thumbprint cookies were just ok. The fresh crumpets with lemon curd were the stars of the service and reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1. They were absolutely delicious. Warm with room temp butter and the amazing lemon curd. We all said we could of eaten 2 or 3 of them. The blueberry tart was good. Here's some advice... others were talking while we were waiting as well. Get rid of the Star Trek decor and go back to making it look like it was prior. It's not going to work and I hate to see you lose business. Best wishes!

Yelp
The tea service at Emperor Georgiou's is simply stunning. For all you Star Trek fans out there you will love love love what the interior aesthetic represents! It is different, current, and refreshing while offering the old world tradition of a beautiful table setting and the very best pastries, sandwiches and of course tea options. My mom's favorite thing is High Tea so for her 80th birthday she enjoyed the Uhura Tea service while the rest of the table had the Burnham Tea Service. Our server was so accommodating, knowledgeable and friendly and we just found out she had only been working here for one week. The white bean dip was addicting, the crumpet and lemon curd so satisfying, and the roasted bell pepper sandwiches exceeded my expectations by tenfold. I could have eaten another half dozen of those sandwiches. All of the pastries were well made. I also enjoyed the clotted cream and lemon curd. The star of the show was my masala chai tea, so spicy and rich and aromatic. Others had the peach, cherry almond and Scottish caramel. My drink was perfect with a sugar cube along with some almond milk - way to offer non-dairy alternatives. The tea service was extremely filling and we had an 1 hour and 45 minutes to enjoy this lovely afternoon. It wasn't busy. They had comfortable velvet chairs inside, exterior seating and even a pick up window at the side of the building. I'd definitely go again! The reservation process was easy and they offer vegan and dairy free alternatives as well.

Fantastic, atmospheric tea service! We got the Burnam service, which was delightful. Our server Addy was wonderful.

Yelp
We've all tried dry January.. it's one of those things people like to do. Trying to have a friend's birthday party while maintaining that, is not so easy. Luckily we decided to do something new and try this tea room. I made reservations online and it was easy. They do take reservations very seriously as they warn you about not canceling or being a no-show, plus you leave a deposit with a credit card on file. We opted for the Burnham tea service at $35 each. When we arrived, we were seated promptly. The space is pretty cute, but is not what you think that a tea room would be at all. They have their reasons for the decor posted on their website. The service started a little slow, but the staff were super nice and once service started, it was well timed. All of the food was fresh and tasty, the soup was warm, and the crumpets were wonderful! The blueberry tartlet and raspberry cookie were the perfect ending. All in all the experience was a delight. We will return and try the expanded tea service next time.

Yelp
Went here for tea yesterday and wow, what a great experience! What I love is that they leaned into the sci-fi theme the perfect amount. The decor and vibe is fun, but the food was classic and not gimmicky. Tea choice was extensive, and the presses gave us plenty to drink. The food offerings were so good! I learned the menu changes seasonally so they might not always have these items but the standouts for me were the chipotle bell pepper sandwiches, the peaches and cream scones, the crumpets and the zucchini brownies with cherry compote. The entire staff was so nice! I've been to afternoon teas in London and Paris but this one stacks up with the best! Especially great for sci fi fans or people who just enjoy a good tea!

Yelp
This is a great place for Star Trek fans, but as a Tea fan, I was sorely disappointed. I loved this place when it was Lovejoy's Tearoom in NE. I'm at a loss to understand what tea has to do with Star Trek. If you're a Star Trek fan go for it. The tea and food are good, friendly staff, but it's all so very confusing- the ambiance has nothing to do with the high tea experience. I won't be going back.

Yelp
We had the Uhura (regular) and Tribble (kids' version) tea service today, on their first day at their new location, and I have to say, we were delighted. From the gorgeous Star Trek Discovery-themed murals on the walls to the lovely, intentionally mismatched china sets, we loved the vibe. The butternut squash soup with balsamic vinegar was so good, although it had too much cracked black pepper for my 6-year-old's spice tolerance. The scones are generously sized, buttery and crumbly, and we loved the gingerbread glaze. The salted caramel tea cakes were scrumptious and just the right size. We loved the tea selection and all in all, felt like we had treated ourselves to a luxurious experience. Great place for a special occasion or just because!

Yelp
From the ambiance to the food, everything was perfect. I loved that none of the china matched. The list of available teas is huge! I tried something new, the Scottish caramel. They bring out sugar cubes in a beautiful sugar bowl with some tongs. That reminds me of having tea with my grandmother. The food was delicious and plentiful. We got soup, sandwiches, salad, cookies, lemon bars, scones, various other desserts and a couple of different compound butters. They bake everything on site. The scone was one of the best I have ever had. Service was excellent! We went for my birthday and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Really lovely peaceful place to meet friends drink tea and eat. The food is good, customer service excellent and the ambiance let's you exhale and relax. A wonderful experience can not recommend enough. It is an oasis in a stressful world.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite tea house in Portland. The owners are incredibly detail oriented and have poured love into every part of this business. The high tea was amazing, with a vegan / gluten free option for almost everything. The atmosphere is fun but also very meaningful and inclusive (take a look at their website). Will be back again and again.

Yelp
If I can give stars for staff and internal design this place will be a five star. I am basing my review on the food and experience that I had. There was a great selection of tea. I would definitely love to have had a sampler option for their tea. I had the Uhura tea service, I was not expecting the soup and salad. That was slightly different, but a nice touch to the combination. The other items on the tier plate was definitely not my cup of tea. I had a lemon allergic which I did notify the restaurant when I reserve my tea service. They were able to switch out the cranberry apple tart with a mini vanilla cupcake, which I was OK with. The reason why this review is two star instead of a five star was mainly because of the food I had and the food allergy I experience. The roast squash and beet sandwich had dried bread, one side white bread, and the other wheat bread which the crust won't cut off , the toasted crumpet was okay, but the vegan butter was super dry, which made it hard to spread. The caramel apple scone was hard, rock hard. My knife got stuck into the scones because it was so hard to cut, the clotted cream for the scones had a dry layer on top like it was left out for a few hours. The zucchini brownies was also dry and had huge chunk of dark chocolate that did not go well in the combination. The pumpkin spice tea cake, sadly to say, was also dry. The buttercream in between the pumpkin spice cake layer was stiff and did not contribute to the texture at all. I didn't have the cranberry apple tart because of my lemon allergy. The mini vanilla cupcakes that they switch out was a little more moist than the rest of the other cakes however, the frosting was very grainy. The ginger molasses tea cookie was okay. I did really like the pear cinnamon spritzer. However, they did not mention that their pear slice were soak in lemon. I had a mini allergy attack at the restaurant. Fortunately, I did have my EpiPen so there was no ambulance to call. The texture and quality of the food was not up to standard. The experience of having an allergy attack because the staff didn't realized that their ingredients were soaked in lemon was not acceptable. Although they had a great tea selection, the whole food and allergy experience makes this place no return.

Yelp
Having enjoyed many a high tea - including some of the best in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Victoria, this Portland hipster place sadly misses the mark. The Star Trek ambiance is incongruent with a high tea, the service is spotty, and the food is so so. For $75, the Uruah tea, the only option available during the holidays, is a rip off. There are no choices for the sandwich selection- none of the classic tea sandwiches are an offering. Oddly, a spritzer and a soup start the tea service. In our case, the soup was barely tepid and it took over 10 minutes for a warm bowl to resurface. The scones were heavy and dripping with sticky glaze which resulted in sticky hands (where were the serving tongs?). The clotted cream serving was minuscule and had the consistency of marzipan. A big disappointment. The sweet bites were ok but again, nothing special. The 3 teas our table had were all delightful, however. Admittedly, Portland does not have a lot of options when it comes to tea. This said, I would not choose this particular place as a worthwhile option.

Yelp
This place was splendid! the staff was lovely, the tea selection was amazing (and delicious) and the food was SO good. I can't wait to go back again!!!
