First off, the staff, vibe, and tea are amazing, and I would *absolutely* come here again to drink tea!
The 3 star review is only for the gluten free food, but since food is a major part of the service, AND you're up-charged for GF food, I feel like the GF food should be good. Honestly, there's no excuse for bad GF food in Portland.
The finger sandwiches were SOOOO dry. Like. I don't know if the GF bread was majorly stale or what, but even with the faint smattering of the filling (which was delicious), I couldn't swallow the sandwich. With such good GF bakeries like New Cascadia in the same city, there is no excuse for gross, stale GF bread. Also, there is no excuse for just how little filling there was in the sandwiches, as I peeked over and saw the normal sandwiches had a good amount of filling. You can see in the photo that they were mostly bread, no filling. I ate one tiny sandwich with a gulping of tea to get it down, but I left the rest.
While the finger sandwiches were bone dry, the crumpet was very undercooked. Like. It was just wet dough inside, and it stuck to my teeth as I tried eating it. Ick. I ate two bites and was done.
The scones were American style (hard) and had a very similar flavor profile to the cake. I wish they didn't taste so similar! But both of these were fine, and I loved that they had vegan clotted cream, (though it reminded me more of whipped cream than traditional English clotted cream).
Staff was very kind and gave us a 10% discount, and we did love the tea so much that we bought some to take home. But the food? Sorry, really bad and definitely wasn't worth the price.
