This is a NY style delicatessen located on Woods Crossing behind the Haywood Mall. I heard a young couple had opened up the deli and can only figure that this is named for the Empire Gourmet Deli in NYC.
They have an extensive (ambitious) menu but it is a well organized menu and easy to orient to your category of choice, which for me, of course, were "The Classics."
I searched out this place on the recommendation of a friend. Being a "NY Deli" that cures their own pastrami, I had to have the Reuben sandwich. I am still on the hunt for the best Reuben in Greenville vicinity. This is not it, but it was good. Marbled rye, house cured pastrami, grilled sauerkraut, Russian dressing and toasted both sides on the grill. Pretty classic. The sandwich was served directly from the grill and it was HOT. Which is good because the main downfall of many Reuben sandwiches is the soggy bottom piece of bread because it wasn't served in a timely manner. Above average on the Reuben, but not knocking the Bacon Brothers out of the top box (who are their by default that the Cafe at Williams Hardware in TR closed).
I had the combo with fries. The fries were crisp and fluffy centered and very good. For a $4.00 side, it was a healthy portion, enough to share.
This was a lunchtime visit. We arrived at 12:20 ish on a Tuesday and there were 3 parties in line to order at the counter in front of us. But there were only two people working the entire restaurant. The cashier was also the expediter, delivering food to tables and she was dropping fries into the fryer and back to the touchless register....and answering the phone. I saw at least 3 parties open the door, look around and leave. It was a bit frustrating to overhear the complicated conversations with each order - do you want this or that type conversations - and it really slowed the line down significantly.
This ordering and check out process was very slow and takes a star away from the experience. Instead of being offered a receipt, I had to choose to have it emailed, which means more time spent on two or three check out screens (order confirmation, do you want to leave a tip, do you want a receipt, enter your email). I understand finding help these days is a challenge, but there really is a need for at least one more employee during lunch. Especially if the line is to the door and you are turning away/losing customers because of the line and slower service. Two of us were in our party and each had a sandwich, one fry, one chip and two waters with a 15% tip it was $33 and some change. Assuming this is typical and that I saw 3 parties leave - that is $200 in revenue that never made it into the door during lunch. Just sayin.
But every table was full for the rush.
I would return because I want to support this type of NY style deli, but probably not on a work weekday, out of my way and takes too much time.
