How to Plan the Ultimate Staycation in Montrose | Eater Houston

"Tucked inside Beetlegeuse Beetlegeuse, this small, outrageously decorated tiki bar mixes flaming Mai Tais and light-up cocktails, though you’ll need to book a Resy to get the code." - Lane Gillespie

Me and my girlfriend loved it. The decor is awesome. It’s like tiki… but not. We sat at the bar so got to chat with the bartender through our stay, and it was lovely. He was very personable and knowledgeable, and his drinkcraft was spot on. All of our drinks were great. We had the Pistachio Mai Tai, Puka Punch, Navy Grog, Saturn, Missionary’s Downfall, and a Cobra’s Fang. All of them were drinks we would gladly order again. And after we got all tuned up on delicious tiki drinks… it was next door to Betelgeuse Betelgeuse for some pizza. A great night, and we can’t wait to go back to Endless Bummer.

A hidden bar inside Betelgeuse Betelgeuse on Montrose and it’s such a vibe. The decor alone is worth checking out and the drinks are strong and well made. Their A Very Bummer Christmas theme right now is so fun the mugs are adorable and festive🎄It’s a small space so reservations are a good idea but they do take walk ins. Bartenders were really chill and attentive. Definitely coming back to try their other themed drinks!

Solid cocktails! Some inventive twists on classic drinks. Knowledgeable and attentive staff. Drinks not any more strong than other $20/drink cocktail bars. They gave us a free aperitif (spiked tea) which was very generous. The lighting and decorations are fun and quirky but don’t overshadow the quality of the drinks. Would go again, especially in a group of 3-4.

Sadly, I was disappointed overall. We didn't have a reservation on a Saturday night so we had to wait about 10 minutes inside Betelgeuse Betelgeuse. I'm not complaining about the wait, but it should be noted that there was plenty of seating once we got inside the bar. I think we had to wait because a large party went in before us and they have a spiel they give before they seat you. Either that or they're trying to create a sense of exclusivity? Our service was fine. Drinks were strong. On the not-so-sweet side. More of a bitter-leaning craft cocktail vibe. Decor was cool but a little underwhelming. I didn't get any of the "immersive" aspect they try to sell. My biggest complaint was that it was overpriced. Drinks cost around $20 each, they have a 2 drink per person minimum and the bill includes a required 22% tip. I think we paid $96 total. I won't be returning as it wasn't for me.

Decor is awesome and drinks are delicious! Went in with my hunny and had the Missionary’s Downfall which serves 2. It is so refreshing and tasty. They have Seasonal cocktails as well that are so cute! Staff was friendly and provided good vibes. 10 outta 10 would go again! There’s also araoke next door on Friday’s and Saturday’s!

Drinks are strong, and the vibe is great. It's hidden inside another bar with really nice pizza.

Yelp
WOW! What a wonderfully unique and fun experience! The staff were warm and personable, and very helpful regarding the venue and the drink menu. Its "Dark Tiki" ambience is a chill, weird vibe (in a good way), with intriguing artwork everywhere you look, and the fresh ingredients put the cocktail program up there with Lei Low and Pineapple Parlor. We first had the Saturn (with non-alcoholic gin) and the Puka Punch, and then the Kobra's Fang and the Bay Breeze (made with non-alcholic vodka). Both were just SO delicious! If you're a tikiphile, make this a regular location for your nights out. The only recommendation I could make to management is that our table needed a wipe down (there was a light dusting of something grainy on the surface), and the menus were a bit sticky, but the experience was so wonderful I consider that a small inconvenience and nothing worth missing out on this fun venue for! FYI: The only entrance is now through Betelgeuse Betelgeuse; stop at the hostess stand and ask the lovely employee there to be seated. The doorbell is no longer mounted at the bar's entrance.

Yelp
Endless Bummer is a hidden bar located right next to Betelgeuse Betelgeuse. You can enter through an unmarked door outside to the right of the BB entrance or you can also enter from inside BB since they share bathrooms. There's a decent parking lot in the back. We went here for a friend's birthday on a Thursday. We had reservations for a large group but I don't think it's necessary if you are going solo or as a couple. The staff is really nice and the decor is extravagantly kitschy reminding me of the waiting room in the Beetlejuice movie. Which makes sense given the headshrinker in that movie. Being a tiki bar, there's a vast selection of drinks ranging from $18-42 depending on the size. They gave us a complimentary entry drink and I think there was a two drink minimum. I had a Bay Breeze and a Bitter Bird. Tasted the Silver Surfer. All were okay, but I haven't been impressed by too many sweet cocktails.

Yelp
Endless Bummer is a cute, trendy, hidden bar in the museum district, snuggled right next to Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse. Think Meow Wolf but on a much smaller scale with a focus on tropical cocktails and libations! The secret entryway is marked with a black palm tree and one must knock to be let in. I made a reservation because a content creator on Instagram recommended one even on weekdays. It honestly felt unnecessary on a weekday at 5PM, and there was a coat associated with cancelling! We were seated quickly and given a complimentary non-alcoholic beverage while we pursued the menu. There were many cocktails to choose from, and we sampled several. Plus, the bartender brought us several free cocktails and shots - he said he was training a new hire who needed practice making drinks. The service was very friendly making conversation and recommendations. The downside to Endless Bummer is that the menu does not include any food items, and the drinks were VERY expensive. Additionally, if you need to use the restroom, you have to exit the bar and walk to Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse (which is connected on the inside, so it isn't too big of a deal). Overall, this was a unique and fun experience to do once! But, the price of the drinks and lack of food makes it doubtful I will return. Note: Parking is free and shared with Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse right behind the restaurant/bar.

Yelp
As the self-appointed king of speakeasies, I'm back at it with one of Houston's newest speakeasies: Endless Bummer. And I'll start off by saying that spending time here was far from an endless bummer. Located in Montrose, Endless Bummer is inside Betelgeuse Betelgeuse. If you've been to Betelgeuse, you know it's a little quirky and that they have good pizza. You'll see this same quirkiness come through at Endless Bummer. There's a complimentary lot in the back of the bar and restaurant. Ambiance (4.5/5): To enter, find an unmarked door with a tropical theme close to Betelgeuse. Ring the doorbell. And now you have arrived. Endless Bummer is relatively small. It can seat 30 people or so. Because of that, if you're coming on a weekend, you should probably make a reservation. If you come on a Thursday, as I did, you'll be in the clear. I prefer laid back experiences when I'm at a speakeasy, so I'm happy I came on a weekday. Endless Bummer has a tropical theme going. You'll see bright colors. It's dimly lit. Exactly what I hope for in a speakeasy. Well done. Service (3/5): The service was efficient and friendly throughout. I was given recommendations when I asked. Why wasn't I fully satisfied? Endless Bummer charges 22% gratuity for all bills. Really?! Service techniques and tipping pressure has gotten out of control lately. I certainly understand wanting to make sure the staff is taken care of. But at the same time, giving a fat tip regardless of the service I receive, and forcing me to do so, seems to be against everything America is all about. I'll get off my soapbox now, but this policy was certainly a turn off. Food (N/A): I had dinner prior, but regardless, I don't think they serve food anyways. If you're hungry, go to Betelgeuse right next door and get yourself a tavern-style pizza. Drinks (4.5/5): Given the tropical theme, as you would expect, there are a lot (not all) tiki-style drinks. When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for creative craft cocktails with an interesting blend of flavors and ingredients. If I'm at a speakeasy and I see an Espresso Martini on the menu, I'm going to be upset. This is not what you'll find here. The menu is carefully curated and has nice descriptions of each beverage. I had quite a few throughout the evening and they were all quality. They even have a few group drinks, which are always fun. Overall, Endless Bummer is one of the best speakeasies I've been to in Houston. I love both speakeasies and tiki bars, so it's the perfect fusion for me. Other than than the service policy, it was an A+ experience.

Yelp
Social media made me do it lol. I have cool friends who always seem to be ahead of the curve when it comes to new hip bars around town. The moment Endless Bummer started appearing on my feed, I knew I had to check it out. EB is a hidden tiki bar inside of Betelgeuse Betelgeuse - Montrose. The self proclaimed king of Houston tiki bars and speakeasies and I visited on a Thursday night. We were able to walk in without a reservation. I'm not sure what the capacity is, but the place is small. I'm guessing they can seat about 30 people max. During peak hours, they will limit you to 60 minutes and there's a two drink minimum. When we went, it wasn't at capacity and we were able to stay for a few hours. If you make a reservation online, you have to give your credit card info. It's a $25 charge if you cancel within 24 hours. If you don't want to make a reservation, they recommend visiting on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Sundays. Ring the doorbell for entry. If they don't answer immediately, it's most likely because the hostess is seating another guest. I can't remember the hostess's name, but she was so nice and a super cool gal. The vibe is really cool, weird, bizarre, and trippy. We received a welcome drink which was some sort of rum tea. One of the bartenders came over and explained the menu. They have a lot of drinks to choose from and each drink has a story. The drinks are very unique and come with a nice presentation. I really enjoyed the Bitter Bird. Some of our friends joined us later on in the evening and the hostess moved us to a larger table. There were more people than we were expecting, but the staff did a great job of accommodating us. We ordered a massive drink meant for 4-6 people and it was boozy. You know you're in for a treat when you visit a place that describes itself as "somewhere between death and vacation." If this is what purgatory is like, I don't ever want to leave.

Yelp
While it was advertised to be an exciting, mystical experience, Endless Bummer turned out to just be a bar with a mysterious entrance and themed decor. The servers were super friendly and certainly tried their best, but the element of surprise with secret rooms and gothic ambiance that they described on the website was not quite there. In fact, there are no secret rooms at all! What really prevents this place from a full five stars is the drinks. I got one of the group drinks with a friend that serves 2-3 and after drinking the entire thing, neither of us were the slightest bit tipsy - which as someone who doesn't require much, was both surprising and disappointing. Another one of my friends got an off menu "exclusive" drink that was very aromatic but not the most pleasant to drink, plus it was still weak. If we had gotten some of their other cool features like the THC options or a drink on fire, maybe it would've been more exciting, but ultimately the drinks were a bit of a letdown. While there was a lot of thought put into the decor and theme, the lack of features that were promised on the website and weak drinks led to an experience that left me wanting a bit more. I'd try again in a few months once things develop a bit more!

Yelp
We had a pre birthday celebration for April Bush on a good Sunday Funday. We started off at this hidden Tiki Bar called Endless Bummer. Reservations recommended. You walk up and ring the doorbell at this secret door. We waited a few minutes and Kennedy came to retrieve us. Once they opened up another secret door it was like Gothic cuteness. I loved it. It was very aesthic! We were seated and we started our drinking journey. They do not sell food fyi. They have a book full of specialty drinks and NO COGNAC. We actually were not familiar with any of the liquor they used. My drink in the boat was super cute, but I didn't like it at all. All of our drinks were pretty mediocre and 25$ a piece! April liked her old fashion. Sooooo if you want social media content, this is your place...but don't come for the drinks actually.. just my personal opinion.

Yelp
Finally! A real tiki bar in Houston. The ambiance embraces all the senses. The atmosphere is magical. The cocktails are pricy but delicious. The service is attentive. This is a must see and try.

Yelp
I recently visited with some friends. There is an awkward door when you enter. We stood in a waiting area and then went through the second door. Anytime someone needed to use the restroom you must knock on that door to go back to the waiting area and then knock on the adjoining door at Betelgeuse and then do the whole process again when you return from the bathroom. The decor was what I would describe as tiki adjacent. It was immersive and cool but not what you would see at a typical tiki bar. When we were seated we were greeted with a complimentary drink. The menu is in a photo album; the prices are high compared to other tiki bars. My personal favorite tiki drink is a painkiller it was not on the menu. I settled for two drinks that are not tiki drinks. (A pistachio Mai tai that did not taste like pistachios or a Mai tai. And an old fashion) other people in my group had daiquiris etc.. upon speaking to the staff I learned that none of the members had experience with tiki bars or tiki drinks. I inquired if they had visited various tiki bars in Texas or were familiar with them. The only one knew was Lei lows ( which is A++ in my book! How can you resist. a barefoot in the sand) After reviewing the menu I said what drinks do you have that are tropical and smooth? ( other than a daiquiri) They said they had not developed that part of the menu yet. This is equivalent to going to I hop and they saying they haven't learned how to make pancakes yet. The whole reason you go to a tiki bar is for the tiki drinks. They have only been open a couple months perhaps they will visit more bars and enhance their menu. The staff was friendly, parking was ample behind the building, everything was clean. I feel turning on some tropical music and fixing the menu would make the experience better.

Yelp
Cute speakeasy, just make reservations or your wait is going to be a long one. The food surprised me the most with how good it was.Additionally they do karaoke in the general bar and food area which was fun but my recommendation would be to turn it down a bit, there is loud and then there is too loud, and it was so loud we had to sit outside to give our ears a break. Lastly if your planning on going out around here afterwards there isn't a whole lot so just expect to drive elsewhere once you finish up here, but overall worth booking a reservation.

Yelp
Walk-ins are apparently acceptable, but I got here with my friends at 8pm, and we were advised wait list was 1hour only hence we got pizza. 1 hour 30 mins later we were advised a group had just left and we were next. 2 hours later after checking again, we were told we couldn't get in anymore because of previous reservations, seriously? Completely disrespectful! The name is super aligned!! What a bummer indeed!

Yelp
We came without a reservation and were told the wait would be one hour. After waiting two hours, we finally got a message saying they had no tables because the 10 PM group had arrived. Why make us wait two hours just to tell us no?

Tiffany W.

Yelp
We showed up for our reservation. The doorbell has been removed so we proceed to knock on the door several times. After 5 minutes, someone finally answers. Do they seat the people with a reservation....no. They take the walk in and leave us outside. Over 10 minutes pass and we proceed to knock on the door again. Finally the hostess returns. We walk inside and and to our surprise a second employee has been sitting in a chair the entire time listening to the knocks. We are told our table is not ready and to wait next door at the Pizza Parlor. Needless to say things are not off to a good start.

Jamie S.

Yelp
This is a great speakeasy with excellent drinks and very cool decor from one of the artists behind Meow Wolf. I particularly recommend their Brown Butter Rum Old-Fashioned, which was by far the standout drink I tried there.

Nathan E.

Yelp
Endless Bummer is anything but a bummer. This little tiki bar crushed it -- every drink was made from scratch and somehow got better with each round. The service was on point -- super friendly, fast, and you could tell everyone genuinely loves what they do. It's like they weren't just slinging drinks, they were serving up good vibes with a side of rum. The ambience is cozy, a little funky, and totally perfect for date-night 10/10

Keith F.

Yelp
Very unhappy with our visit. Despite having a reservation for our anniversary, when we got there they seated us next to the wall. Yes a wall with a 6 inch shelf for your drinks, nothing kills the vibe of a fun night like staring at the wall, and yes there were 3 booths open, I asked if we could be moved to one... and we were told no. Waiter came by and I quote he said "What do you want" We had just sat down so we asked for a minute and he seemed put out and just walked away. Eventually we ordered drinks, but we just could not get in the mood, so we paid our bill and left... However... guess what, a 22% tip is included on your bill.. well if its mandatory its NOT a tip and 22%? Come on, not for the terrible service we had... as we left, the 3 booths that were open when we arrived, were still open, so bottom line, will never be back. Also you have to ask permission to enter the bar, and to exit the bar, if they have a customer at the check in, they will not let you leave or go to the bathroom (Which is in the restaurant next door), its really a bizarre setup. They call it an experience to enter, but its really not, I have been to many Tikibars and this one is not that Special in design or decor, but it is very very tiny.

Monica ..

Yelp
Drinks were incredible! Only bummer about this place is how tiny it is inside. Fun atmosphere and hostess and bartenders were super friendly and accommodating. Looking forward to returning!

Parinaz A.

Yelp
TRACIE is the BEST person ever. She made our entire night. She was the sweetest person ever. The atmosphere was really cool too.

Nico R.

Yelp
the experience itself was really good the drink were also good but I had a reservation for 4 people and due to a family emergency the 4 person didn't get here till later and they didn't even want to even let him see the place which is a bit to off putting . he didnt even want to order because he wanted to reape their rules but they wouldn't even let him look at the place and it just did t sit well with me . especially because the reasoning behind it was to keep the mystery which is ridiculous when he was originally included in the reservation
