The 38 Best Pittsburgh Restaurants - Eater

"Pittsburghers love their pizza, and there’s always a debate about who has the best. A strong contender is Ephesus, which takes pizza to a whole new level by incorporating staple Mediterranean ingredients on their pies. Get a gourmet pizza with lamb kebabs, Moroccan chicken and dates, or Turkish pepperoni (or opt for something more traditional if you’re feeling less adventurous). Ephesus also serves Mediterranean appetizers like baba ghanoush, grape leaves, and falafel, as well as gyros and wings." - Briana L White

I had high expectations for Ephesus Pizza in downtown Pittsburgh after hearing so many good things, but unfortunately, my experience didn’t live up to the buzz. I ordered the vegan spinach and chicken pizza, hoping for something flavorful and satisfying. What I got instead was a soggy, gooey, droopy mess. The crust lacked structure, and the vegan chicken had no flavor at all—just a bland topping that didn’t add anything to the dish. Also tried the falafel with pita bread—the falafel was rock-hard and tasted like it came straight from the freezer. The pita was freshly made and soft, which was a plus, but without a good falafel pairing or a decent sauce, it didn’t help much. Overall, I left feeling let down. Maybe it was just an off day, but I wouldn’t recommend it based on this visit.

Google
So good! My favorite was the buff ck because of the buffalo fries 🤤 but love me a good white pizza (Bianca), both were amazing. Would recommend!

Google
This is one of the best pizza places I've visited in all my time across the states. The individual slices are absolutely loaded with every inexpensive topping you add, flavor as fresh as it can get. Their specialty pizzas are wonderfully crafted and unique, only thing I wished for was more napkins and a bigger stomach! Pizza is very oily on some slices such as the Buffalo chicken but it is worth every drop on my shirt. WILL be coming back soon or next time I'm here!

Google
This place has great pizza and amazing options for toppings. I think of stopping here everytime i go downtown pittsburgh. next time I must try the gyros they prepare them from scratch!

Alex

Google
I admit I've never been in person, but I order delivery from here all the time and I'm addicted. My partner is vegan and this place has the BEST selection of vegan-friendly options that ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD. Their fresh baked pita is wonderfully soft, and everything always tastes super fresh. I would crawl through the desert for a small taste of the chicken broccoli pie. I was surprised to see that it's such a small place when I looked it up; I was convinced it would be some big, fancy restaurant. If/when this place ever expands I hope they don't forget their roots and stay this delicious.

Google
My second time ordering here and will probably make it a regular lunch swing-by. Loads of topping and side options normally not found at a pizza shop. Slices are nice and big with plenty of cheese. Pricing is also nice with some lunch options under $10.

Is a Turkish person who lives in United States this is one of the best spots I hit in Pittsburgh. We have stopped two times in one week both pide’s which is pizza and the bowls are amazing. I would recommend to anyone owners and the workers are also super nice.

John

Google
Service was a little slow and the workers didn't seem to want to talk to people much, nor do I think they understood English the best. However, someone who I believe is the owner came in and kicked them into gear. We also had a bit of a friendly chat and he checked up on me to see if everything was accounted for. However, they were behind on a few other peoples' orders that caused drama whilst I was there. It's not really set up as a dine-in restaurant but I didn't expect it to be. There is some space, though, and there are relatively clean bathrooms. The food, however, was great even though they were missing the ingredients to make one of the listed menu items. The crusts were nice and chewy and the Moroccan sauce was really good. I got red peppers, onions, and soujouk on that pizza. The other pizza was a BBQ chicken pizza with jalapeños and said chicken was nicely browned. I devoured both of them as well as a few pieces of soft, fresh za'atar pita bread. I would definitely come back to try some of their other menu items because they have a large selection and lots of interesting toppings/combinations.

Yelp
The pizza was amazing and customer service was excellent! Coming from Miami we were looking for a good local pizza spot and we got the jackpot!

Yelp
They couldn't have messed up my delivery order more if they tried! I ordered a small pizza with ham and pineapple (yes, I'm one of THOSE people), and instead, they delivered a small pizza with sausage, pepperoni and ANCHOVIES! I kid you not @%# ANCHOVIES! I also orders a small baklava and instead, received deep fried mozzarella sticks! This all started because I'm staying at a huge but old hotel in downtown Pittsburgh, that, get this, doesn't have room service! So, I had to order the food, go down 15 floors to the lobby, only to get the most screwed up takeout order I could have imagined. Oh, and the pizza, what little I ate, was greasy. Perhaps the restaurant itself is nice, I don't know, but their food and their delivery leaves a lot to be desired.

Yelp
My go to spot for a good slice of pizza when I'm in town late for work. Great specials. Fast and friendly service -- I can usually my order in the time I have between bus transfers.
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
My partner and I have ordered from here a few times now and every time the pizza is sold. Usually pretty fast and plenty of toppings. The crust is nice and flaky, definitely a good option to check out!
google avatar

Halie G.

Yelp
Got pizza and a hoagie takeout and it was perfect. The crust is so good- did banana peppers & pepperoni and the pizza was loaded with toppings. The Italian hoagie was cooked to perfection!

Yelp
Nothing fancy about this place but it's great for what it is. The pizza slices are HUGE and for just over $2, a great deal. Fries were hot and crunchy. Taking off a star because I wish they would have cooked the green peppers a little more, I likely wouldn't get that topping again since they just throw it on raw to heat up the slice. There's some seating inside but it's no frills, and it seems like most of the biz is takeout.

Yelp
We love this place, especially their bowls, which you can customize to your heart's content and their Pide, the traditional Turkish "pizza" that is just great. What sets them apart is that their ingrediants are so flavorful. Thay make a yogurt sauce/cacik that's just a level above the taziki you get in most places. They serve their dishes with a grilled hot pepper and tomato. Also traditional. Their Choban salad is great, the Turkish beet spread is super tasty, and they even make a cauliflower shawarma! Their Pizza dough is very good, fluffy and again, seasoned slightly with herbs around the crust. They make a kebab pizza that if you're a meat eater you owe it to yourself to try it. I've had their kababs and their lamb meatball, and it's all legit. We had been ordering pizza from another place in the downtown and it was fine, but when we tried Ephesus and have never looked back. They take ApplePay, so we just show up, put our flashers on, dash in and get it, and head home. It's our choice for pizza (and much more) downtown.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try Ephesus for a while since I knew they had a lot of great vegan options. I had a hard time deciding but ended up getting the vegan Buffalo chicken pizza which was really tasty and super flavorful! It's a bit greasy as you can see from my photo, but obviously you're not expecting a healthy meal if this is what you pick haha. Looking forward to trying some of the other menu items as well!

Yelp
The pizza was great. Another person got kabobs, and it looked fresh while served with homemade hummus. Not the cleanest place, but the staff was nice.
google avatar

Dani J.

Yelp
The service was super friendly and the pizza was delicious and they had vegan options. Score! My entire family was pleased.

Yelp
Review based on delivery: I've been wanting to try out Ephesus for years! As a (mostly) vegetarian, I was happy with their veggie based selections. I ordered the spinach and feta pizza, and it was honestly probably the best pizza that I ever had. I also ordered the spicy buffalo fries which were fantastic. My friend had the gyro sandwich, the sub was really loaded and toasted to perfection. I would definitely order from here again, everything was very good!
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
I'd get the falafel again, but the pizza is way overpriced and not great. Crust so thin in the middle you have to pick up your slice with 2 hands so it doesn't fall apart.

Yelp
Came downtown to try the intriguing idea of a Kabab pizza. I love lamb. I love pizza. This just felt right. The pizza itself was solid. My major critique stems from the misleading or outdated menus provided as I was on the fence between getting 2 smalls to try multiple offerings. But the menu showed better value to get a medium. It was marked up $4 more than the advertised price. I totally get and respect the rising costs. My thing is be sure to be up front with the consumer rather than mention it after the fact.

Keith J.

Yelp
Extremely good pizza and even better service both on the Phone while ordering as well as inside the parlor.

Sadia H.

Yelp
I used to be a regular customer to this place before Covid. I had called in for pick up, went there to pick up. The cashier was very rude, she took the payment and left the store without saying anything. Here I was waiting thinking my order is being prepared , but in fact it was ready and in the counter in a brown bag that was open . She came back after 15 minutes and asked me why I was here , and I said I am waiting for the food. She said if it's been here on the counter since. She should have at least handed me my food or even said Thanks etc. in addition I asked for some hot sauce and she said it's 1:07 , it was never like that before.

Vivian L.

Yelp
I was here for a conference and came in with 15 people because another restaurant cancelled on us. This place was by FAR the BEST place we ate during our trip. Amazing Customer service, and super quick as well. If I ever come back to Pittsburgh, this will be my first stop for sure! You should absolutely come here! Plus, you get some much bang for your buck!
google avatar

Yelp
So great. Open a branch in Portland, OR, why dontcha? Pretty sure the lamb on the Moroccan pizza was chicken but the flavor was fire.

Yelp
Pizza is 5.0 the interior is 3.0. The Greek food look good the pepperoni pizza was amazing.

Jen P.

Yelp
An hour before closing the guys were so busy with takeout, but still warmly invited our party of 9 to take a seat for dine-in. A fantastic experience!! Homemade everything! They were out of a dressing I ordered; instead of making me choose a different one, he mixed up a portion right then. We had three different pizzas - great deep flavor, also spicy feta dip - with dill and an olive oil drizzle, two of us ordered bowls (which aren't on the online menu) and enjoyed every one of the ten different toppings. Stick to the authentic menu items- the Buffalo chicken salad was not spectacular, but suited my mother-in-law just fine. I wish we lived in Pittsburgh and could go back again and again!

Yelp
I can't believe we have never tried this place before. We got the Pesto Chicken Warm Sub, the Small Italian Calzone, and the Sun Dried Tomato and cold Feta Dip with Pita. Literally everything was amazing. The Sub was packed full and had this amazingly fresh-tasting pesto on the chicken, the Calzone was huge and had the most delicious dough, and I can't even say how obsessed I am with the cold dip. It was sun dried tomatoes, red pepper, and feta, with warm pita bread for dipping. I could eat it on its own. Service was fast and everything came quickly. The inside isn't anything fancy, but you don't even realize. Hearty, delicious, and comforting.

Yelp
Lost as to what to eat in downtown Pittsburgh before a show we randomly tried this pizza joint. Though the ambiance is negligible the seafood pizza we had was excellent! Fresh vegetables, garlic, plentiful shrimp, and a perfectly cooked crust satisfied our hunger.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
False advertising. This is NOT a pizza restaurant. It is a Greek place that sells vegetarian pizza.
google avatar

Sakina K.

Yelp
Delicious fresh Turkish pizza. We got the keymali pide and the pide with soujouk cheese and egg. It was very close to pizza we had in turkey. The bread was delicious, crispy not greasy. The bread with the kofte was also very good. I didn't try the kofte but my son ate them all so I'm assuming they were alright :-) I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Brought a group to this place tonight prior to ice skating at PPG. Others will talk about the great flavors, the solid pizza, the complete lack of ambience. I want to focus on two of the most important things about a great meal: the side salad and the rice. The side salad - most Mediterranean places throw a bunch of red onions and a 50% vinegar dressing on top of iceberg lettuce and call it a "Mediterranean Salad". Not this place. They use one of my favorite lettuces: endive. And they don't overwhelm the endive with red onion. They have red onion, but they use is sparingly. The dressing is a not too vinegary at all, with a nice mix of spices. They could add a few more tomatoes, but that is a quibble. The rice - an under appreciated ingredient is rice. Most places overcook it and hide their mediocre rice by smothering it in a sauce. This rice was fluffy, light and served with what I believe was butter. No other sauce, just butter. It was so, so, so good I could eat it alone. I would HIGHLY recommend the rice and happily eat it alone the next time I go there. Now as for the rest of the meal, my lamb kabob was great. Served with a tomato and hot pepper on pita. My wife loved her hummus bowl with falafel. She raved about the way they cooked the jalapeño. The kids just had cheese pizza and they loved it. I tried a slice late at night and it was a WOW pizza. Easily up there with Slice on Broadway in Beechview, if not better. I love this place. I can't wait to work my way through every type of kabob they have. And my wife and I will be back.

Yelp
Didn't know what to expect from Turkish pizza, but it was delicious. A friend and I split a personal pizza for lunch -- and the owner, who was very friendly and nice, asked the girl in the kitchen to stretch the personal pizza sized dough ball thinner to make it easier to split, which was very thoughtful. We got the Greek pizza, which had gyro meat, provolone, feta, black olives, tomato, onion, and a very little bit of white sauce. It was delicious. The crust was coated in garlic powder. All the flavors came together perfectly. Seriously, it was one of the best meals I've had in a while. They also have plenty of more traditional American pizza options as well, but I definitely recommend experimenting here.

Yelp
I came here while visiting Pittsburgh, and got a carry out. When I called, I asked about the free salad with the Yelp check in and they didn't know what I was talking about. I showed them when I came in and they seemed confused, saying there must be a mistake, and wouldn't honor it. It's not that big of a deal but I feel that you should honor a coupon if it's up there, and then call Yelp to sort things out. BTW, it's been a week and the offer is still on Yelp, so I'm not sure if they just have that on there as bait but I'm taking stars away for that. I ordered a small pizza with half chicken/ half lamb kabob. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't come back for it. First off, $2 for additional toppings on a SMALL pizza is ridiculous, and it was slightly soggy, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and will say that's because I didn't eat it fresh, but when I got back to my hotel (about 25min later). One thing about halal pizza places is that they cannot get their pepperoni right. I've had really good, legitimate halal pepperoni and then the stuff at places like this. It's more so sausage slices than anything else. The only reason I would recommend this place is because it's halal. Otherwise, I'd probably just get a vegetarian pizza elsewhere.

Yelp
I ordered a Bianca with mushrooms. It was over the top amazing! Whole roasted chunks of sweet garlic, fresh perfectly cooked mushrooms. And it came with a small container of what has to be homemade ranch dressing. They delivered to my hotel quickly and were even so kind as to wear a mask for me. Don't overthink it, just order! I hope to try some of their other gourmet pizzas next time I'm in town.

Charles B.

Yelp
Had the pasta...was pretty good. Still a little pricey despite including a salad and garlic bread. No fountain soda, have to buy the bottles.

Arpita S.

Yelp
Great pizza flavors and entree portion sizes. We ordered delivery and it was very efficient.

Yelp
Really good as always. I ordered the Lamb Kebab Pizza. It had 6 skewers with green peppers and tomatoes on white sauce. Soooo fresh!
google avatar

Jayme B.

Yelp
One of my favorite pizza places in the city. I've recently adopted a gluten free diet, and this is one of the pizza spots in the city to offer a gluten free crust. It's very good. They are generous with their cheese and toppings also. And their homemade ranch is to die for! It's included with every pizza you order. Other items we've had that we love: my husband loves the grape leaves and their buffalo chicken pizza, and we both love their buffalo fries. Also, ordering for Ephesus off of the Yelp app is so easy to do! I recommend doing that when ordering from here! :)
google avatar

Yelp
You want a piece of ZA by the slice -????? You must come here !! It's an artesian twist. With amazing crust and taste like authentic... Pittsburg pizza to me ...

tim l.

Yelp
Gyro and pizza were very good, we will ordering from here in the future. Looking forward to trying their other items.

Yelp
My favorite pizza take-out! I haven't had this pizza in a year and was craving it hardcore. We ordered boneless wings and the buffalo chicken pizza. Holy Moley! Now I know why I was craving it so bad! The pizza isn't just any old buffalo chicken pizza...it comes with yummy waffle fries on top. They break up the pizza taste very well. I love that there's a lot of chicken on the pizza, they don't skimp on their toppings! Standard buffalo chicken pizza comes with ranch...I mean what more could you ask for! The wings were slightly overpriced for what we got. That being said, they were super tasty and I would order them again in the future. You gotta try this for yourself, you won't be disappointed!

Timothy T.

Yelp
Fantastic food, friendly service! I highly recommend a visit! From the pizza to the bowls, everything was delicious!

Yelp
I ordered a single pizza, the chorizo and fontinella. It was very memorable from positivity. The sauce was excellent - not sweet at all, slightly acidic and very fresh. Close to just tomatoes and basil, and finely crushed and blended. The bread was well-risen, crispy on the outside and soft on the interior. The red peppers stood out - particularly perfectly cooked, just barely blackening along their edges and soft throughout. This pizza was from a creative and thoughtful menu, I look forward to trying more of it. 5/5. Update: January 1st, 2018 New experience: I ordered a pide(excellent, excellent item) to the incorrect address. Upon calling Ephesus to change the address (moments after submitting order via grubhub) I was told this was where the pizza will end up. An hour later, I called again and was again told the pizza would reach the correct address. 3 hours after the order being placed, I called back to ask for a refund and was rudely told to contact grubhub, because they deal with refunds. A very poorly co-ordinated system; there were repeated failures for the restaurant to communicate with the drivers, and very inept handling of those failures. 4/5. Update: January 24th, 2021 Consistent correct deliveries (after an initial six month sabbatical) and continuing high quality have led me to revise this review again back to 5/5. I love this place, they are my go-to pizza (or pide, depending on the mood of myself and guests) again. In the two and a half years of monthly consumption, their menu is still fascinating and I am finding new delicious experiences through it. Current favorites: mangal soujack pizza, moroccan spiced chicken pizza, and pide with soujack and cheese. 5/5.

Yelp
A little over a year ago I was introduced to Ephesus by a person I will forever be grateful for. Everything I've ever eaten from here has been delicious and even if you leave the pizza out for a really long time it remains nothing short of amazing. The gourmet pizzas are always a go-to, and I've eaten almost all of them besides the ones with tons of meats and been impressed every time. The Moroccan chicken and dates pizza is super unique and one of my favorites. BBQ chicken or the veggie omelet breakfast pizza would be up there on the list of favorites, too. For as good as the pizza is, the price at Ephesus is really fair. Sometimes parking is a pain, but if you don't mind walking a block or two for some killer pizza, I'd recommend it to anyone!
google avatar

Sandra F.

Yelp
I got the vegan chicken and spinach gourmet pizza. It was delicious! Their vegan ranch is good too!
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Got a kebab pizza, hummus, and grape leaves and cheddar jalapeño poppers. Lamb kebab on top of pizza was real " fatty" and lamb chunks were very small and dry, the pizza was in dire need of sauce! I noticed I was extra charged after I paid the bill from the restaurant for extra tsziki sauce and received 3 ranch dressings instead, I ordered and paid for extra pita bread and did not receive that. The grape leaves were good but I'd not order here again. Freeport road Ephesus is way better. Plus they don't take it upon themselves to charge me extra money for items they do not give me , and not include items I've paid for in my order.
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
I ordered take out from here through door dash and was not disappointed. Soooo good. The Buffalo fries are smothered in cheese and spicy! I also got a gyro sub, the meat was probably the best I've had and there was plenty of it. Great food and good prices! I will definitely be ordering from here again.
google avatar

Courtney B.

Yelp
A few coworkers and I ordered the Seafood Alfredo pizza for lunch and it was amazing! They loaded up on the shrimp and crab meat the slices were all decent in size. This is the first time I've eaten here and I will definitely be ordering here again.
google avatar

Lillian P.

Yelp
So this was the only thing open after midnight on my walk back to the hotel. If you are hungry and taste doesn't matter too much get the pizza since it is huge and filling just very dough heavy. I also tried the beet salad and falafel. The falafel was wonderful and so was the sauce. The beets were a fail I am pretty sure no one orders them so I could tell they were fresh out of the can and had oil added....no spices just oil very weird and just not worth eating.
google avatar

Arun S.

Yelp
I was not happy with my recent visit to have my favorite Kabob Pizza. They have replaced their delicious kabobs with chicken on a stick which was so bland. I was disappointed after driving 40 minutes and paying $10 parking just to eat my fav.

Katie H.

Yelp
While there's not much ambiance to the place itself, the pizza is absolutely delicious. Seems reasonably priced compared to competitors. Lots of interesting "gourmet" pizza options.
google avatar

Anne B.

Yelp
Ephesus never disappoints. Fresh delicious, traditional pizza fare plus Turkish flavors too! Super friendly customer service, great delivery team!
google avatar

Tad D.

Yelp
I was very pleased with the meal here and bought more for lunch the next day. I had the Moroccan chicken pizza, soucjuk pide, and doner plate. The best was the pizza but that's perhaps because I ordered egg on my pide as well and it wasn't the best choice, but that's on me, not them. Delivery was fast, perhaps ten less than advertised. Show some love for a good spot!

Yelp
I come by every now and then when i have the time, and I am never disappointed! I stopped by late night (about 10PM) for a pick up order and was met with a piping hot pizza. Things I liked: - I called in for a pick up order that was ready by the time I arrived! (within 15 minutes) - Because it was late night, I appreciate that my transaction went incredibly efficiently so I could quickly drive home and gorge on a beautiful arrangement of caramelized dates, toasted almonds, and spiced chicken. - The pizza dough itself is amazing! I like that the dough is not too thick and doughy, a great thickness for the bountiful toppings. The crust is also airy and chewy. - The combination of toppings is so delicious! I personally have a strong sweet tooth, so i really like the pairing between caramelized dates, tender chicken, and the crisp of toasted almonds. It also adds a nice variation in texture. Things I didn't like: - Not much to say, perhaps that I lack the self control to not eat an entire pizza by myself because they're so filling! (it's nice that they offer 4 varieties of sizes). - Not very welcoming place to dine at: plastic seating makes for a less comfortable dining experience, and the place is actually a bit small, so I always get to go and eat somewhere more comfortable for me. Overall, the pizzas are amazing! I will definitely be returning to try other kinds of pizzas (mediterranean is solid too!)
google avatar

Sohini G.

Yelp
Have now had take out or delivery from here 3 separate times and every time have felt slightly fatter and 100% satisfied. I usually like my pizza ultra thin but I am a fan of the (slightly) thicker crust here. The topping however is what does it for me - super fresh and despite the lag that comes with delivery - never soggy. My favorite being the Kebab Pizza. The wings were more of a 2 out of 5. But the pizza was good enough to keep the high rating. Overall resounding yes to Mediterranean pizza (albeit not the healthiest.) Resounding no to Mediterranean wings.

Yelp
This pizza is BY FAR the best pizza in Pittsburgh. Yes, I said it. Over Fiori's. Over Beto's. Over Stone. I could go on.... We order from here at work frequently and have never been disappointed with the food. The pizza is the perfect amount of dough-y and cheesy and cooked to delightfulness. I would love to try some of their other national dishes on the menu. The only thing that could definitely change is notifying customers of when their order will be late. Twice so far I haven't been notified when the delivery time is over 45 minutes. Hungry workers would at least like a heads up!

Kent C.

Yelp
First business trip to Pittsburgh. Felt like to have Italian chicken parm. Search yelp and decided Ephesus Pizza. Ordered chicken parm. After open the sub in my hotel room, the chicken parm is great. Nicely toasted and just enough cheese and suave. Of course the chicken was tender. Taste great. Highly recommend a visit.
