Chef Stephanie Izard heads Equality Should Be Normal gala | Eater Chicago

"Chaired by chef Stephanie Izard, this new organization focuses on eradicating anti-Black racism through programs like arranging field trips to Washington, D.C. for students and by providing direct community aid; recently it served 1,000 Thanksgiving meals and has opened a community center in Washington Park that offers free resources such as college-prep programming, mental health services, and distributed food, clothing, and other items. The group is also fundraising via a virtual gala that sells meal kits (enough for two) and features cooking demos from well-known chefs alongside musical performances, with proceeds supporting the organization's youth-focused work." - Ashok Selvam

ESBN is a welcomed and much needed entity for our community. What its founder Romel Murphy has been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time is nothing less than astounding. ESBN has provided thousands of hot nutritious meals for the homeless in addition to warm clothing, groceries and personal essentials. There is a mental wellness facility staffed with therapists, mentoring services for our youth and a safe space for young people to hang out and have fun. Fundraising has also already made a huge impact as well. ESBN has become an essential part of the community and we’re excited to see all the amazing things they continue to do!

Equality Should be Normal is confronting the injustices of this world. As a leader who is being lead by God, Romel Murphy is living with purpose regardless of the pandemic. The volunteers at ESBN are screaming “WE CARE” by advocating and being of service to their community. I wanted to let you know that the community is grateful!

They are accomplishing so many things in the community....from addressing food insecurity to mentorship, mental health counseling and educational opportunities for youth. It’s goals are truly to serve the people in the community, provide hope, and a better today and tomorrow.
