The Mission District’s Beauty Bar Has Closed - Eater SF

"It’s been nearly two decades since Equinox, the rotating restaurant atop the Hyatt Regency San Francisco stopped turning. But according to the Chronicle, the restaurant will resume its rotation this week. The restaurant isn’t reopening, but the hotel has fixed the mechanism that allows it to turn. This week, a select group of hotel customers can experience the turning restaurant space, and the hotel plans to host a reopening evening on May 1." - Lauren Saria

One of the best gyms I’ve been to and I’ve been to MANY. Wish we had something like this in my hometown. The gym area had everything you could ask for as a hybrid athlete. Equipment doesn’t miss. Steam room was amazing. Bathrooms were very detailed and had everything you needed.

Google
The hours of this gym do not match the price of membership. In what would otherwise be a solid gym, EQX looses 2 stars because every location in the city is closed by 6pm on weekends. I’m convinced that management knows their hours are too restrictive, as there are frequently tens of people still working out when the gym closes. LiveFit, Fitness SF, 24 Hour Fitness, the YMCA, Bay Club, and Crunch all have better hours for at least one location in the city, some for a third of the cost. The men’s steam room is also consistently packed to the brim and there is no sauna. Again, issues that shouldn’t exist for a gym of this tier.

Google
The front desk staff was extremely unprofessional. My friend is a member of the gym and received a text inviting her to bring a guest for happy hour, so she invited me. When I arrived, the front desk told me that guests weren’t allowed and tried to make me leave. My friend explained that she’s a member and had received a message encouraging her to bring a guest. They then asked for my ID, which I provided, but immediately told me to go to the bar and ask the bartender instead. I was confused—how could the person pouring drinks be responsible for checking IDs or signing people in, especially without a computer or tablet? When I approached the bartender, she looked uncomfortable and clearly tried to indicate that it wasn’t her responsibility either. The whole situation was awkward and felt very unprofessional.

Took a yoga class w Mary here and she was very warm and welcoming. It was challenging and a great workout. This location is sprawling. The art deco furniture is super fun. Tons of equipment. Personalized pumpkins. The details in the decor makes this location great for working!

Highly recommend trainer Travis for anyone starting off their fitness journey. Travis is very knowledgeable, patient and charismatic. Overall staff is very nice This equinox is well maintained as well.

I had such a horrible and uncomfortable experience with the front desk receptionist. He must not have been trained on creating a good customer experience. I have been to Equinox’s all over the country and couldn’t believe the treatment that I had. So unfortunate because I went to the Union St location the day before and had such a lovely encounter with their manager. I would never go to this location again.

Janis Skriveris

Google
They are very quick to send spam emails for referrals every two weeks yet when a referral signs up, they will make up rules that aren’t disclosed anywhere to not give the bonus. They will do anything to keep signing up people for their already crowded and small gym, but upholding their end of the agreement seems like a feat not worth respecting. Deceitful and incompetent customer service is what they do best.

Sophie Park

Google
Ok gym. Too crowded but good classes. Water pressure too low, tho I didn’t experience the no hot water issue others mentioned. I was told I’ll be able to freeze my account 60 days each year before I joined, but it’s actually just once per year for either 1 or 2 months at a time. Well that doesn’t work out too well for its clientele who probably travel often, does it? Hate chains like these trying to trick their members. Yet another reminder this is just a big corp trying to extract as much $ as possible. I did have a great 1:1 personal training experience tho. It was the first trainer I liked ever in the US. She listened to my concerns, paid full attention to my forms the entire time, and gave me the exact feedback I had been looking for. Unlike my previous trainers, she never looked at her phone once or tell me my forms were just “fine” when I complain about back pain. My pilates lesson was just average, so the quality of personal sessions vary a lot by the trainers/instructors.

Not only did I look for jobs... I Also won a raffle drawing which I ğàñë won a SFO CUP which was pretty cool!!!!!!

Yelp
Same Kiehl's toiletries and good instructors that you'd find at all Equinox clubs in SF. (Some teach multiple classes across multiple SF clubs weekly.) But the gym, class studio rooms, and locker rooms are all smaller. It also offers less amenities than their way bigger Market St location: No sauna. Just a steam room. Unlike the Market Street club, the showers are much smaller and don't have body lotion stocked in each one. You have to use the communal body lotion instead. I wish they would post a steam room schedule because after only 10 minutes of being in one, a cleaning lady came in to say it was time for a cleaning and we had to exit. I don't like when they book a regular class after a heated class because the room is still too hot for at least 30 minutes. The room I was in today was not properly equipped, so students lost 5-7 min of class time doing it themselves. The props also were new, so left dye stains on students' hands (and none on our clothing, fortunately, since only our hands made contact). I only like a few of their classes: Trilogy Barre (the class that dyed my hands) and CJ's classes like Athletic Conditioning and Abs. If you're going to spend money on an Equinox membership, opt for their Market Street location instead. Sure, the rate at this location is lower, but you get what you pay for.

Yelp
Functional Equinox location but if it was my local gym I'd seriously consider whether it was worth the membership premium. The cardio area, though similar to most other locations, was about 12 degrees warmer than it should have been, and the air quality was awful. The gym was super crowded even though I was there early (for NYC standards) on a Saturday. No sauna though Google thinks there is one.

Yelp
We all know the dreaded drag when work is long and you're unmotivated to move. But, it's a little less hard to find your motivation when your surroundings are so immaculate. Equinox has a huge facility that doesn't skimp on the luxuries. It is clean and well-organized and the best part is that your workout can end with a steam and shower paired with a collection of Kiehls products. They also have top notch classes. I feel like gym classes often get a bad wrap for being easy or subpar, but obviously not here. Equinox is like all your favorite studios in one place. I got to take Stronger with Spencer L. It's a heavy weight strength training class. It was hard, but also soo good. What I appreciated most was that the class was really challenging, but all the moves were accessible. Spencer was so fun and motivating and had a GREAT playlist. Everyone deserves a life of luxury. Equinox truly is that lifestyle and I think once you go Equinox, it's really hard to go back.

Yelp
I was lucky to get a free trial here through my work (no CC signup needed). The gym was a lot smaller than I was expecting but it had all the essentials- as long as there's plenty of squat racks, I'm gucci. Everything was clean and modern. The locker rooms had plenty of amenities and even a sauna which was nice. Downsides: - Very limited hours: I've never seen a gym close at 6pm on a weekend til now. - Very busy on weeknights: It was so full, like 90% of weights were taken which is lowkey annoying. - Expensive membership: I'm not sure what regular price is since they're so secretive about it but even with my work discount, it's very very high Upsides: - They have everything you could think of needing - There's a yoga and pilates room - The soaps in locker rooms smell really good

Yelp
Back again to visit my new GF, who works here and got the tour. The main floor has all the strength, cardio, and stretching space. It's a bit smaller than some of the other clubs in The Bay. Many free weights stations, rather than machines. It does have exceptional lounge and work spaces. The pro shop is well organized and easy to navigate the athleisure wear. Super friendly staff. Valet parking and full security. It's a top shelf club!

Yelp
I go to this gym quite often and I enjoy how all of us try to stay on the same page with working out together as a team . We all have unique styles and enjoy what we do. From The front of the entrance staff is very friendly and always acknowledgeable from entrance of the door. They have amazing team players ( employees) that help encourage us to keep an our exercising steps on a smooth level of working out safely which helps succeed with keeping us from endangering parts of our body. Classes (cycling plus more) are also motivating and helps me push for a deeper workout on every location Ive been so far. Also Want to thank Jeff for immediately taking care of helping with password reset through out the glitch. I try my best to not keep high expectations to live less disappointed however I do give this equinox team a 5 star. I highly recommend this place

Yelp
***I was really trying to give a 3.5 star, not a 4.*** Van Mission is the latest and newest Equinox location to grace the city, brand spanking new. Equinox does not disappoint or come short when we're talking about decor, design and details. They are the nicest, fanciest gym for a reason - their interior design game is top notch and I promise you, you will spend the first 15 mins admiring all the details and architecture before remembering you're here for a workout. So go ahead, evaluate and ohh-ahh over the industrial style stair case, frosted shower doors, marbled vanities, and more. There are three floors: - Basement is the lockers and spa. - Second is the main workout floor with machines, weights, group fitness room, lobby and lounge area. - Third is a yoga and pilates studio. While there's three floors, don't expect for it to be huge. The sqft is on the low end, which means the second main workout floor does not have that much space, one of every machine (except squat rack and cable machine there is 2 of each) and there is only one stretch area, but they made sure to reserve a lot of real estate for that. All the machines are Hoist and Lifefitness. Remember I said it's small here, so there is not a whole lot of free space where you can snag a spot to set up your area. I can imagine if things return to normal (think pre-covid) this gym will be packed!!! Sports club location will always win when it comes to space and machines. Locker rooms are very spa like and Houzz worthy, but you didn't expect anything less right? Lockers have built in lock and this location has a few individual vanities if you're not feeling very communal. Oh yeah, they also have straighteners at this location (A+ on amenities). So I took away 1.5 stars because of the space, not enough machines to accommodate those peak hours and....validate parking cost an arm and a leg. Every 30 mins is $8, with a daily maximum of $20, it's also valet only because parking is shared with the apartment above. Ouch. Your other option is street, metered parking. Being this Equinox is in such a busy area, good luck with that.

Kahaan P.

Yelp
The gym charges you a very high premium for services it does not deliver. 1. The steam room is consistently bad and barely steams, when you contact the management to change setting they're equally fed up and say there's not much they can do. 2. The hours are shorter than nearly all other gyms in the city, that are a lot cheaper. Staff are incredibly helpful and gym is very clean, but the value prop is not worth the membership fee.....

Yelp
I have been a member of Equinox in the past when I lived in Palo Alto and had a terrific experience. After moving to a location that didn't have an Equinox, I went in a different direction. However, after relocating to the city and seeing this location as I walked by a few times and I decided to go in for a tour. I was greeted by Kristen, the membership advisor at this location. She was an absolute joy to work with and Took the time to make sure that I had all the information I needed to feel comfortable moving forward. Having worked in a sales environment, it's very common to have pushy sales people that ram something down your throat, even when it's not the right product for you. I absolutely do not respond well to this. She gave me a tour of the facilities and gave me some time to marinate on the idea of joining again. Kristen wasn't overly pushy, which was a breath of fresh air. She was able to accommodate all of my requests and made me feel like I was more than just a way to reach a sales quota. She took the time to get to know me as a person and my fitness goals and pointed me in the right direction. Good sales people are very hard to come by this day in age. I feel like the management should recognize when they have real talent on their hands and should make sure that she is aware of her positive impact on potential clients. I'm proposing a raise effective immediately. Even after the sale was made, she has gone out of her way to make sure I have gotten all of my needs met. When I come into the gym, she always greets me with a cheerful smile and says hello. I also wanted to give a shout out to some of the other team members here who have had a positive impact on my experience so far. I met with Pablo who did my fitness assessment and he really went out of his way to do a thorough job and was mindful of my injury. Much appreciated. Nick, who works at the Earth bar has had a notable positive impact on my experience so far. I get really dehydrated and a glass of ice is tremendously helpful and he goes out of his way to make sure I am accommodated. Immediate raise for him as well. The group fitness classes have been a game changer for me and have helped me move forward in recovering from my ACL replacement surgery. Yoga instructor Warren is the man. Jordanna is an epic Pilates instructor with an infectious positive energy. It's a real treat to work with her. Usha is terrific and has made me feel very welcome regardless of me being a beginner. She goes out of her way to show me modifications in the Yoga classes to ensure a safe experience. Overall, this place is somewhere that you want to come to. I enjoy the workouts and often use the comfy chair in lounge space to get business done. In conclusion, I highly recommend this location. It's not just the amenities that stand out, but the team members that elevate the experience. Keep up the good work. Thanks for everything!

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous new club! Definitely the most aesthetically stunning of all of Equinox's SF locations. It seems to be part-fitness facility and part-coworking space, and that's not a bad thing! I love how any different lounge chairs, desk, etc there are to get some work done between workouts. I love the high ceilings in the main gym floor which really help it feel open and airy. The locker room is giant and stocked with all the amenities you could need (razors, hair ties, makeup remover, etc.). Great music, great vibes, great energy!

Susan S.

Yelp
I am updating my review up 2 stars because the management did listen to feedback and extend the hours. Now the hours at this gym are a bit less of an issue and hopefully the management will continue to extend hours. Now there is a second issue that is preventing increasing to 5 stars. The sanitary wipes at this facility make all of the equipment smell like a strong vinegar. It is way too aromatic and vinegary and has a dank, vinegary, musky odor. Sometimes the eucalyptus towels do not smell 100% fresh, but I haven't noticed that issue as much recently and I'd say the vinegar wipes are the biggest issue and my friends have noticed it as well. If they fix the vinegar wipes I will increase my review to 5 stars!

Russell M.

Yelp
Not sure I would recommend this gym if you are looking for exclusiveness or friendly staff and workout environment. I've been working out here for a while and it's getting busier and busier no mater what time of day.

Yelp
The gym it's self it's very clean. The trainers and teachers are very kind and informative. The gym does seem small, and there isn't much parking also the area is just getting worse lately. Almost every time I leave the gym cars windows are shattered. As a woman, I don't feel safe coming here anymore since I'm scared to walk to my car alone

Yelp
This place is as good as nearly any gym in the world except for the super elite category like the Equinox Destination gyms, including the generally flawless Equinox Sports Clubs in SF (on Market), LA, NYC, Boston, Miami, and DC. Oh, and there's no parking. But here's what this place gets right: 1. Terrific yoga instructors who are very detailed in anatomy, nice playlists, and willing to talk after class. Many yoga studios, despite their dreadful numbers, are rather strict if you're late - but here the instructor comes over with props to help you. 2. It's flawlessly clean, including cleaning the equipment and yoga mats. 3. Some trainers, like Pablo, are incredible. Most gym trainers are pretty mediocre, like at Fitness SF where I also belong for the geographic convenience in the Castro. 4. The equipment is up to date and very clean. 5. The physical facility is bright and hip. 6. The staff is kind of like what I imagine a boyfriend/girlfriend sex worker is like. They act so much like they really care that you might forget that they are getting paid!
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
The good stuff: 1. I'm mostly a class person and the classes and instructors here are great! Everyone has their own style so it's worth checking out few diff instructors to find your preferences. I love every yoga class I've taken and love the variety of heated/vinyasa/athletic/restorative. 2. The amenities (and the first-rate instructors) and cleaning staff are what you're paying for. The cleaning staff are on it: locker rooms, equipment, showers, etc are always clean when I'm there. And it's really nice to have straighteners, good blow dryers, tampons, shower caps, razors, etc. available for when you need it. The not so good stuff: 1. The amenities are part of the high cost so it's really inconvenient now that the hours are reduced (and with no warning?). I take the last class of the day which is over at 8:30. And it's nice to take a steam and shower (what I'm paying for!) after class. But now that the gym closes at 9 there's no way to do that. I get that the pandemic is causing a reduction in workers but then in that case, members should have a reduction in price until the hours are back to what they were when we signed up. 2. The staff leads something to be desired. When I first signed up last September I was emailing with someone who offered to take me on a tour of the facilities. When I arrived that person wasn't available but they set me up with someone else... great! That person literally walked me to staircase and pointed straight ahead and said "these are the machines, upstairs are the yoga and Pilates rooms, downstairs are the locker rooms". And that was it! Cool. I def couldn't have figured that out by myself... 3. This isn't feedback for the Van Mission gym but for Equinox in general. The app is absolutely terrible and that's when the app is working. Half the time it doesn't or half works (won't let me sign up for classes, won't save classes I've added to my calendar, etc.). And the UX is horrible. I get that they're trying to push digital classes but all I want to do is easily book my in person classes, easily check in and easily see my schedule. The app does not make any of those things easy.

Yelp
I became a member on April 30th and the member advisor and manager approved my request to freeze my membership for the three months I was traveling and said they'll issue me a refund. However, when I returned the advisor and manager both quit and the new manager said that they cannot honor the request, as a result, I was charged the entire amount even though I got it approved before I left. I was charged almost $1000! What is worse though is hearing the manager (Bob Young) laugh at me while I was struggling - the whole experience felt so humiliating and all for a mistake I didn't make. He kept saying it was my fault - in the past, the managers/advisors have added notes to my account (I have notes on my account from 2016) but the manager here does not want to admit fault and kept trying to blame me for it. I even offered to reach out to the employees who have quit but they won't budge. It was very obvious what he was trying to do but ultimately it really just ruined the brand's reputation. I have convinced so many of my friends to join the club and now I feel horrible that they will be met with humiliation if something goes wrong on their account. It doesn't end there when he called me back he was yelling at me (I wish the calls were recorded so the regional manager could hear how this manager treats his customers). It is absolutely unacceptable for me to be charged a single penny since I was explicitly told my membership would be frozen. I need a refund immediately.

Yelp
Roxy, the shining beacon of EQX here! I'm just here to fangirl on her, so allow me--been going to EQX almost a decade now and she is the most empathetic, energetic emblem of what EQX stands for. Honestly makes going here a pleasure. They are lucky to have her--give her a raise. This woman works her butt off

Yelp
Meh... I long waited for the opening of this Equinox in a neighborhood somewhat devoid of infrastructure. All-in-all pretty disappointed in my first week's experience. Despite spanning 3 floors the actual workout space is pretty small. Like other SF gyms this means there is only one of each type of workout equipment (ie one cable row, one calf machine, one cross cable). This means lack of workout variety and an absolute crappy workout whenever the gym is a little full. They haven't fully got their act together. The staff doesn't know answers to basic questions, vending for drinks and water are from the shake shack which is closed sometimes when the gym is open. This means you can't buy a water if you workout during off hours. Oh yeah, and their hours suck; closing at 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Maybe I'm too picky or expect more for a $300+ monthly membership but quite frankly I prefer the SF Fitness 2 blocks down for 1/3 the cost. Maybe I'm not as much of a boojie b*tch as I thought ....
google avatar

P C.

Yelp
I come to many gyms. I don't have super high expectations, but this club is a little small... smaller than any gym I've personally visited. The staff's friendliness was good enough! It's pretty clean, and the equipment seems like they're wiped down regularly. I witnessed this. There is however a little bit of a weird smell. The yoga instructor was excellent and got me back into that routine! I will try to get used to the size in time!

Vic L.

Yelp
This review is for the spa. Claire gave me a nice relaxing facial today. She asked me about my concerns and target areas. Overall a good experience.

Yelp
Love coming to this location. The facility is great and always clean and the training team is awesome! Joey, Sue and Sam are awesome. The front desk is always helpful and the membership team is wonderful! Kristin and Tanner are super helpful and make sure I'm always taken care of!

Yelp
Opening this summer, ricci was super nice with the tour. Looks super nice and opening sooner if more sign up. Also, there is a promo now so if you lock in prices, you can keep it. Such a good deal :D

Yelp
When ever I work out at this location, the employees great me with a hello. Everyone that works here is so kind. Thank you Van Mission team for a great gym.

Gus M.

Yelp
NOT A SAFE LOCATION!!!! BEWARE THIS AREA IS FULL OF THIEVES!!! I like the gym so nothing bad to say about the facility or equipment. But I'm a new member and already had my bike stolen in front of Equinox. Even though my bike was double chained, they still got it. I called Equinox for footage to file a claim and of course they couldn't help! I'm ready to switch to a safe gym. :(

Matthew N.

Yelp
1) Not nearly enough weighted machines. This gym has limited amenities and missing some. 2) Didn't feel comfortable there. Homeless all around building. Doorman just stays inside and hides. Does nothing about the homeless around the entrance of the building. Tents right across the street. 3) No pool 4) No spa 5) No suana 6) Cold showers most of the time unless you sit there for a minute for them to warm up, wasting tons of water. 7) During COVID times they aren't making sure people wipe down equipment during busy times. People just walk away and they only clean a few times a day. 8) Steam room overcrowded and small, steam room has issues working at times without playing with wall switch.

Nicholas S.

Yelp
Equinox locations are always pretty nice, this one however exceeds some of the other locations I've been to. It is a fairly new location so it is very clean and the equipment is new. The downside is the size and layout of the facility. It often feels like they tried to cram too many machines into a small space, and there are so many ellipticals and treadmills that are never in use. I think they could do a little bit of a replanning of the equipment placement. I also noticed that there seems to be a lot of turnover, especially in the personal trainer role. I'd imagine clients would like to keep the same trainer for a significant amount of time, but that must be difficult when it seems like a new trainer class comes in every few months. All in all a good place to workout, but there definitely are some improvements that can be made.

Yelp
Beautiful gym, but there are some dead giveaways that this branch is cutting corners: the snack bar has a friendly staff but their offerings are inedible, and the coffee is the worst in San Francisco (even the staff won't drink it). Bathrooms clean but the San Quentin Penitentiary toilet paper - the thinnest I've ever seen -- is inexcusable. I met two guys - just hired as Equinox trainers, watching an on-boarding video -- that said they had never trained anyone, ever before in their lives: WTAF ?? Equinox is the most expensive gym in SF... but this branch doesn't deserve your money.

A T.

Yelp
Wished that they spend less on marketing and more on staff to expand hours. Kind of unacceptable that the gym closes at 4 on weekends and 7 pm on Fridays. Not to mention the reduced hours in general. The omicron excuse is getting tiring. Also, staff are generally nice but blonde membership lady is pretty rude needs to have a lesson on customer service. ------ Edit: omicron excuse. Other gyms seem to be doing just OK and didn't reduce hours while charging 1/3 of EQX's monthly dues. I wonder why that is?

ST H.

Yelp
Facilities are subpar for an Equinox, but the staff is one of the most rude, unhelpful and condescending staff I have ever seen. Been here for more than a year and every single interaction with their staff has been negative.

S C.

Yelp
Manager is unresponsive and does not seem to care much about the member experience. Management also tolerates questionable comments that stereotype clients and does not take any action when members bring it to their attention.

Michael M.

Yelp
Very nice facility. Peak time is around 5:30 PM weekdays but it's not very crowded even at that time.

Andrew S.

Yelp
I travel for work and have the Equinox national plan, so visit a lot of clubs. This one is somehow kind of unpleasant. It's a small club by national standards, but very crowded and everyone looks at you like you're in the way. I don't know the other SF clubs, but the Equinoxes on the peninsula seem much nicer and friendlier.

Kristin C.

Yelp
So excited for this location to open! Equinox never fails to create a gorgeous space to work out!
