Erick Schat's Bakkerÿ – Bishop, California - Gastro Obscura

"Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ is a bakery and tourist attraction in the small town of Bishop, California. It is known for a special bread, the Original Sheepherder’s Bread,  that they have reportedly produced continuously since 1907, although no trademarks exist until 1938. This roadside bakery boasts turn of the century recipes and all their bread is baked in stone hearth ovens, using no preservatives. They make everything from scratch, including their baker’s yeast - after all, there’s not much else to do on the edge of a desert in the middle of nowhere. The Dutch bakery produces approximately 25,000 loaves of bread per day, outnumbering the population of Bishop by 6 times. It is one of the main draws to the area and the smell of baking bread lures you in. Their built-in deli provides road food for the thousands of truckers and adventuring tourists who find themselves driving the lone stretch of road between Mono Lake and Joshua Tree. The bakery doesn’t stop with bread and olliebollen (deep-fried donuts) but also regularly stocks hundreds of jars of honey, marmalade and sauces of all kinds.  One can find both savory and sweet treats here and it caters to travelers and locals alike. Google
We stopped by Schat’s Bakery on our way home from Mammoth recently, and it was absolutely packed—and for good reason. The selection of food, bread, and bakery items is incredible; if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you’re probably not looking hard enough! We really enjoyed the delicious pastries and croissants, which were top-notch. They also serve a pretty good coffee, and there’s seating out front where you can enjoy the typically nice weather. The prices are reasonable considering the quality and variety on offer. Overall, it’s a fantastically stocked bakery that’s definitely worth a visit.

I came here last week after not having been here in about 20 years. Luckily it was as great as I remembered it and I got to show my family what all the hype was about. It's still ridiculously busy in there and the place is small so there's a lot of walking around sideways and avoiding people in the long line for sandwiches. We got about 6 baked items, and of course they're all amazing, with the chili bread being my favorite. All their baked goods are great quality and the pricing is good. I've had a sandwich before and it was great quality as well.

Go early in the morning if you can, before the crowds that come later. Every other time I’ve stopped at this place it’s been packed full and it stressed me out a little. This time, I stayed overnight in Bishop and so we went first thing in the morning and beat the crowds- got to see everything all set for the day. Other folks had the same idea to go super early for what they wanted but much more tolerable getting through. Awesome coffee cakes/ we got a cream cheese one- need to get many more! It didn’t last long at all.

Stopped by Schats for lunch. It was very crowded, and the interior was tight to navigate. However, tons of great food options to purchase. We bought four sandwiches and a bag of pastry items from the bakery. We walked next door to eat in the quiet, air conditioned room! It was super helpful with our three young kids, because it also had a bathroom. Food was delicious and was a great stop on our road trip.

Google
Truly magical. Smells incredible. Sparks joy. Perfect stop for our road trip 🩷 Then got to come home and continue to enjoy the happiness with our baked goods served with coffee. Lovely!

Atmosphere is magical. Food and service is bad. We came because of all the good reviews and left extremely disappointed. Everything is very expensive, which would be fine if everything was also very good. My partner was interested in a honeycomb chocolate, asked if it was real honeycomb in it and the lady said yes. Then he asked how much it was and she said I don't know, no follow up on how to find out. The chocolates were very tasty luckily, but do *not* have honeycomb like he was told. I had ordered an eclair, which is a favorite pastry of mine, so I was excited they had then because we read this place was so great. I took a bite and was immediately from anticipatory bliss to absolute disgust. It tasted sour, like it had gone bad. I asked my partner to try and he said the same. So I went back in and told them there was something wrong the filling must have gone bad or the pastry is old. She said that's not possible because they were made this morning... I said it is inedible and then said she could get me a new one. I said, if they're all like that then I don't want it and would just like to return it. Can't do that. So I and asked if I could get something else? So after chatting with some people I got a cream filled donut. I got through *more than half* of it before encountering any cream, which was actually a blessing in disguise, because it also had the horrible sour filling in it. I'm a huge fan of bakeries and make it a point to stop at every one I can. This is by far the worst one and I can only imagine it has the rating it does due to the atmosphere and proximity to tourist attractions. It would never survive on merit alone.

Google
I love this place. I took a detour just so I could pick up some tasty breads and cookies. I also got a turkey pot pie. Every time I come here, it's always so busy. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Google
Such a refreshing stop along our long drive today. The different types of bread with all the different smells both of sweet bread and sourdough as well as sheepherders bread was amazing. It claims to be the original place where she put his bread was first served in this country.

Yelp
Cozy family bakery in Bishop. They have an array of baked breads ranging from asiago bread to sweetened by dried fruit energy loaf. Free samples are all around the store. Worth checking out for delicious bread and sweets!

Yelp
This may be our last time patronizing Schat's after 30 years. The employees have gotten more rude each time we visit. Today LESLY (4000165) rang my purchase up did not say hello even after I smiled and said hello. I laid my two breads down and she aggressively grabbed them. She was not happy and she made it very apparent. I did not tip on my purchase which was a whole other turn off, which I may have had she been even remotely friendly. She took the receipt rudely threw in the bag and pushed the bag at me without saying anything still with that angry look on her face looking down the entire time. It was unbelievable-I can't say I've had a service person or anyone for that matter act this way in a very long time. It wasn't just her not saying "hello." Customer service is severely lacking. I'm sure travelers can be rude and hard to deal with at times, but I smiled and greeted her. If she can't fake it and do the job with somewhat of a smile, then maybe she shouldn't be employed there. It was so bad my receipt says I checked out at 1:09 and it's now 1:19...

Yelp
Rude customer service from Chela this morning. Argued with me about making a simple egg and cheese croissant. Even though I get this all the time, NOT ALLOWED on her watch. She only had sandwiches with meat, so I'm SOL. Very annoying. I wouldn't give up, so she eventually capitulated after asking several employees. In Spanish btw, which I understand. And she informed me I'd have to wait, for who knows how long... At some point another worker told Chela she needed to wait on me, as I was standing for a long time at the counter, with no other customers in sight. I was waiting, as she promised. I love their bread and Swiss kiss cookies. Sandwiches are very OVERRATED and bland. The sandwich line can get unwieldy and they often close it early. That said, I hope the experience doesn't sour me, because this bakery is a highlight in my mammoth trips!

Yelp
I'm surprised to see I've never left a review for Schat's. I used to go to Mammoth a ton in undergrad (at least 2-3 times/month during season) to snowboard and Schat's was always a stop on the way home. Their Bishop location is the original and has better and larger selections of pastries and food than its smaller Mammoth lovation. I typically get their hot pastrami sandwich with extra mustard. Absolutely yummy. I like their pastries selections too; their cookies are good. I haven't been in at least 2 seasons but Schat's will always be one of my favorite sandwich shop.

Yelp
Spent some time here while charging our car after friends recommendations. HUGE selection of breads and pastries. We tried the sheephearder bread (it was just okay, tasted like wonder Brad) and the pullapart apple bread which was tasty but otherwise unremarkable. Overall the selection was impressive but the taste and uniqueness of flavors was lacking. Might come back next time we need to charge here but wouldn't make a special trip just for this.
google avatar

Yelp
I used to stop by here back in the snowboarding mammoth days with all my friends. I finally came back in over 15 years and it's still as busy as ever and still high quality in foods. I feel like it even got better than what I remember! They make all fresh whole turkeys to use for their daily soups, sandwiches, and even fresh turkey pot pie that I'm so bummed I didn't get to try! Those fresh baked breads and pastries, ugh never enough time or stomach space to enjoy it all! Love it here!

Yelp
I came here on recommendations from my BIL going home from our Lake Tahoe trip. Unfortunately, their sandwich bar was closed by the time we arrived and sold out of their premade cold sandwiches. Truly, I was devastated. HE kept raving about them, so I was looking to try them out, but we came pretty close to closing time so it's understandable. They had a lot of bakery items in stock though. I grabbed a loaf of sourdough bread, a variety of cookies, a large cannoli, and large chocolate cream puff. Unfortunately...My husband ate all of the cookies. He said they were good though! I got a bite of their peanut butter cookie, and I thought it was fine. A bit too chewy for my tastes, but perhaps it tastes better fresh or reheated. The cannoli was not what I was expecting, but not in a bad way. They use a sweet, toffee like candy for their shell, so this cannoli is much sweeter than I'm used to. It's good and seems to not at all be like a standard Italian cannoli, but good in its own way. Cream on the inside is also good, but again a bit too sugary for me. The cream puff was good. The whipped cream was sugary and dense. I prefer light and fluffy, but this was still good. Thought the pastry portion was just fine. The highlight was definitely the sourdough bread. Brought this home, toasted it, and made a sandwich with it. It's very delicious! Toasts well, and the flavor stands out even with all of the sandwich toppings inside. Would highly recommend getting this, and would pick it up again myself. All in all, solid bakery. Will definitely be back if I ever pass by to try their sandwiches and other items.

Yelp
This sandwich is one of the best I had. The Shepherder Bread was so fresh. The veges are fresh and not overwhelming in amount. The line was long but worth it. Parking sucked. And finding a spot to sit in was a challenge in this hot weather. But I will go back again to get another sandwich.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and baked goods. Clean restrooms and helpful employees. We always make a point to stop here when we are passing through Bishop.

Yelp
Heaven for bread lovers. That's the only way I can describe Erik Schat's bakery!! Like out of Hansel and Gretel (minus the evil witch), Schat's bakery is brimming with the freshest and most delectable baked goods you can imagine. I spent over an hour deciding what pastries, cookies, and breads to sample here. I ended up hauling out an entire box of baked goodies to take home to LA with me. My friend and I spent 2 days in the Sierra Nevada wilderness scaling the rugged peaks. Every morning before our hike, we made sure to stop at Schat's to stock up on their Veggie sandwiches. Gosh! They must be the best sandwiches I've ever tasted. Loaded with gouda cheese, avocado, sprouts, tomatoes, lettuce and other delectable condiments on soft Volkoren bread, these sandwiches were mouthwatering and perfect for nourishing us on our strenuous treks. They were even better than energy bars! Remember that these baked delicacies are the real deal ... they are FRESH and made without preservatives. You can keep them out of the fridge for at most for 5 days. Afterwards, they can be frozen for up to 3 months. This is a fantastic bakery that should be on the top of everyone's "must see" list when traveling through beautiful California. 100% recommended!

Yelp
Visited this bakery on the way home from mammoth and I can see what all the hype and rave is about. The pastries are made fresh and are so good. Every single thing I tried, I loved. We took home churros, chocolate croissant, sourdough, freeze dried skittles, and chocolate dipped macarons. I bought an iced vanilla chai and it was such a good cup of chai. When you go inside it's kind of overwhelming because there were two sides. The left is more savory so for sandwiches/soups/deli and the right side appears to be the sweets/ice cream/chocolate/coffee. They have sooo many options on both sides, so make sure to read all the labels. Customer service was so great. They are a family business, the minute you walk through the door everyone is super welcoming and helpful. Jesus helped us get our pastries and Everardo rang us up at the register. A very friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
Everyone loves Schats. Amazing bakery in Bishop on Hwy 395. Been here dozens of times and judging by the lines (they move quick) I think nearly everyone comes here whether staying in Bishop or just passing thru, North or South. So many baked goods it's surprising every time. Great great great breads and a very cool thing is they have the ingredients listed on every single one. Comes in handy for those who don't like white flour or sugar. Great sourdough and even double sourdough. Known for their Sheepherder bread, but they also have breads like chili cheese, bacon cheese, Honi squaw, Mule bread, an amazing no sugar energy loaf and many more. Focaccia too, plain Chili, Olive, Tomato or Mushroom. Cookies and danish probably like you've never seen. Donuts and even gelato. Great breakfast croissants and amazing deli sandwiches, which I highly recommend the pastrami.. Candy, preserves, spreads and jerkies. Pretty much anything you can think of. A cool little shop with lots to look at. With that said, it's busy, every time I've been (probably 15 times over the years). Very good coffee, specialty coffee, tea, smoothies and fresh squeezed OJ too. It's surprising how many employees work there and everyone is very nice and helpful. Parking on either side of the building but with such a high turnover, people are coming and going constantly, so there's always a spot. I could go on and on but my fingers are tired. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Yelp
Whenever I have family visiting from California, their rest stop is Erick Schat's Bakery. I am not shy about placing my order for them to bring to Reno. They have some delicious pecan pull apart bread that is to die for, as well as some jalapeno cheese bread. The challenge for the driver coming to visit is not eating both loaves before they get here! Planning on a trip myself to California and Schat's will definitely be on my list to stop off and eat myself into a bread coma!
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, everyone was so kind and of course the bread was fresh and hot It was still snowing while there and this was a wonderful treat

Yelp
Great bakery on the way to Mammoth. Love to stop here on the way back to LA for lunch and bread to take home. Their sandwiches are delicious and filling, and their bread is always a hit. The bakery is a madhouse before 2 pm. If you go during lunch you'll have to be patient with parking, and the lines inside. Worth the wait especially if you have a long ride home! Recommend any of their sandwiches, t cheesy breads and sourdough loaves.
google avatar

Yelp
If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would!! It's such a cozy and familiar tradition for my family to stop by otw to mammoth. Can't go wrong with anything here, from sweets, hot subs, and ofc the famous chili cheese jalapeño loaf!! For sweets definitely try the pecan pull apart bread or sticky bun. For everyday eats, the energy bar is also fantastic and a non guilty treat. Make room in your car and buy lots on your road trip never knew bread could be so heavy LOL we spent so much time in here.
google avatar

Annie N.

Yelp
Cool pit stop to/from Mammoth and surrounding areas. I was really impressed by the huge selection of savory and sweet baked goods. We tried their bacon garlic cheese and chili bacon garlic cheese breadsticks, and they taste like Costco chicken bake but better and without the filling! Highly recommend! The sandwiches are good, but not great... they lacked spread/sauce and flavor in my opinion. However, the cookie they give you with a sandwich is divine. The clam chowder is also comforting and delicious! Even on MLK Jr Day when everyone is leaving the mountain, we were able to find parking and seating. They have an extra space on the next block for indoor seating now!

Yelp
Great bakery products super fresh , customer service is ok but is definitely a great place on your way to Tahoe or back.
google avatar

Jayne F.

Yelp
Very moist chili cheese roll with just the perfect amount of jalapeños and cheese. Very fresh! Turkey vegetable soup was piping hot. It was full of carrots and not enough variety of other vegetables. A small portion of turkey! It could have also used a good dose of seasoning. I definitely would not order again do to lack of flavor. My husband's roast beef sandwich with Gouda cheese on sour dough bread was very tasty. Gouda cheese was perfect complement to beef and sour . Said it was perfect balance of moisture. He also enjoyed the dinner roll that came with my soup order. Said dinner was real fresh!
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Perfect sandwiches to enjoy at the end of a hike. The bread is obviously a highlight, as it's very soft and fresh. The roast beef and pastrami are both good, and the sandwiches are huge. I do think they go a but i overboard on the toppings, as they're really overloaded with sprouts, jalapeños, and mustard which can make it hard to taste anything else. Another great thing is the amount of free samples everywhere, lol. Keep your eyes peeled as you wander around the store.
google avatar

Cassidy H.

Yelp
Tasty bread, decent sandwiches. We liked the cheese bread and pullaway bread a lot! The turkey and pastrami half sandwiches made for a good snack/meal on our way to Mammoth, and the breads were great to reheat during our stay. Cool place with lots of bread and pastry varieties. Crowded but lines move fast so don't be intimidated.
google avatar

Kat A.

Yelp
Love coming here on our way to and from Mammoth!! They have a great selection of bread - including a delicious bacon cheese bread which was soft and chewy. They also serve sandwiches here in addition to baked goods. I got a Hot Pastrami sandwich and it did not disappoint! Bread was soft and chewy - the proportions of meat to bread to other fillings (lettuce, tomato, etc) was just perfect. Flavor on the sandwich was also really good! One friend also ordered the same sandwich and wished the bread was thicker/crunchier like a dutch crunch, but thats personal preference. Service at the counter was fast. Ambience here is super casual - not really a sit down place but they do have tables outside. Highly recommend coming here!
google avatar

Brittney L.

Yelp
Super crowded on the Sunday morning I was there but that's pretty typical for this infamous bakery in Mammoth. Left side of the store is breads and sandwiches and the right side is your baked goods and sweets. They also sell gelato, pastries, so many things. Take your time to explore and check everything out. As for purchases, can't go wrong with their chili cheese loaf/rolls.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here after a weekend of trout fishing, my first time in the Sierras, and stopped by this place on the way home. I walked in hungry, and best believe I found me something good to eat. My eyes were wide opened to all they had to offer. This is a bakery and they had everything and more a bakery should have. From sweet pastries to cookies and cakes in all sizes . Cannolis, cupcakes and plenty of sweet breads, I mean everything , too much to list . I also noticed the baked 8 plus pound turkeys for some of the turkey dishes they serve, like sandwiches and Turkey pot pies! I orders the Pastrami sandwich and it was delish. Simple but very good. Also picked up some coconut macaroons and some cream puff and it was all fresh . Parking can be an issue since so many people come in and out of here, but be patient , you'll find a spot. They bakery felt really welcoming and cozy with all the food on display. Staff here kind and pleasant and will answer any questions you have. What a great place to stop being my first time in the Sierras. Will definitely be coming back I promise, for the Turkey pot pie and the countless items they have here.
google avatar

Mandana B.

Yelp
I think this is a good bakery. Nothing knocks me out in terms of being super good, but I do like their bread. The quality of the bread is good. We usually grab a few when driving by to use to make sandwiches. The pastries are okay, coffee is okay. There's always a long line, very busy! Parking is super tough. You are better off parking down the street and walking over. Ambiance is great.
google avatar

Jing L.

Yelp
How popular is it? I saw hundreds people and cars, So I stopped by #395. I bought 7 items only $65
google avatar

Madie D.

Yelp
Definitely not a quick stop if you're just passing through town. We were trying to grab a quick sandwich before continuing the drive back to LA, and it took over an hour to get a delivery sandwich. They organized their store really strategically - it's impossible to get through the fat lines without picking up another item before check out. The sandwich was pretty tasty - I loved the roasted turkey and cranberry sauce combo. The bread is soft and fresh, which is kinda terrible for the purpose of a sandwich. I would've liked my bread to be toasted so that it actually held up while I was eating. The fresh bread is nice to take home though!
google avatar

Jane W.

Yelp
A must go to in Bishop! When you have a group of hungry snowboarders, you go to schat's for the big sandwiches and so many baked desserts. I recommend trying the raisin cinnamon roll. It might surprise you.

Yelp
Visited Erick Schat's Bakkery twice, once on our way to and back from Mammoth. This is definitely a place to stop by on a roadtrip. They sell all sorts of baked goods and sandwiches at reasonable prices. On this visit we ordered the #3 Hot Pastrami, Whole and turkey chili. The Hot Pastrami's our favorite sandwich now. It was tender, juicy, and wasn't overly salty. Although we enjoyed the roast beef sandwich we actually like the hot pastrami more now. The bread was soft and yummy. They're really good at making breads here. We tried the turkey chili and it was good. Very hearty with lots of shredded turkey, beans, and onions. It came with a soft bread roll, which we'd love more of since there was a lot more chili to bread ratio. Before we left we also bought a Bacon Chili Cheeze Bread and a couple loafs of sourdough bread. The Bacon Chili Cheeze Bread has cheese inside along with some bell peppers, and it's a little spicy. Tastes great if you microwave it a little before serving. The sourdough was good. Not that sour. Overall we'd definitely come back. Friendly service. Restrooms available inside. Free parking available in parking lot.
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
Food: Classic made to order sandwiches and tons of baked goods, candy, and candied apples. Everything taste home-made and this place always hits the spot. We ordered a tuna sandwich and added extra mayo to it. Service: You grab what you want to buy and get in line at any cashier to pay. The crew members are very friendly and will help you out with whatever you need. Ambiance: it is usually very crowded inside. There's usually more parking in the back of the bakery. I always come here everytime I visit Mammoth to snowboard. I love being able to take home baked goods for friends and family.
google avatar

Sophie O.

Yelp
The walnut banana bread was so bland, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that, but I got the loaf to bring home and nobody really enjoyed it. The sour dough bread was also pretty bland, according to the person I gifted it to. Otherwise the pastries we got that same day were pretty delicious and the hot chocolate wasn't bad either.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Sensory overload! In all my years of road-trips this is my favorite bakery. We purchased a variety of items, the hot ready to eat croissant-like with ham, cheese, Jalepeno was the winner. Another standout is the fresh squeezed ON THE PREMISES orange juice. This is far superior than any shelf stable product that claims to be fresh. Do not leave without a flat loaf of chili-cheese bread, their top seller. If it's not your thing then it makes for a great gift. Employees were super friendly. Enjoy your goodies under the umbrellas. The line was quite long around 5:00 p.m., early morning (when the bread is fresh) was definitely best.
google avatar

Sanaz S.

Yelp
Like some other folks have said before...this place is totally an icon, and it has been for ??!! years! Soooooo many options for bread, pastries, cookies, cakes, etc. Not a ton of vegan options, but I did score on some garlic bagels, the original recipe bread, olive bread, etc. So, for sure enough to keep my carb loving heart happy. Service was very friendly and fast, although the shop was packed. So great to go in the morning and have everything freshly warm! Don't even bother eating anywhere else on your way up the 395, you can get sandwiches, snacks, juice, etc here.
google avatar

marissa l.

Yelp
This is bread heaven! It's never ending of so many options you can think of ! I ended up trying their rosemary sourdough sliced loaf and we loved it . Theirs a good amount of pastries, jams, cookies, candies selections as well. They offer some premade sandwiches. You can also place an order for some to be made fresh for you at the counter as well as coffee and teas.
google avatar

Iinda H.

Yelp
OMG if I lived nearby I would weight 300# sandwiches with their fresh made bread is heavenly.
google avatar

Yelp
Customer service This is a powerhouse, bakery, that supplies jobs for a massive community in the area. Ation should be given and grow with modern times to elevate their hospitality
google avatar

Priscilla C.

Yelp
Great stop for hiking snacks, and stocking up on sandwich supplies. Parking thought, many types of bread, we were looking for pumpernickel, no luck though on this day. Gets crowded, folks are friendly
google avatar

Marcus F.

Yelp
Tourist-trap bakery and deli that excells at tasty bread and pastries. While the sandwiches are on par with your favorite office deli (no gourmet sandwiches here), it's their bread that's worth making a stop. - There are too many fresh loaves of bread to choose from. - Not a lot of parking. - Try one of their more exotic breads like pinto bean. - Crowded, not the place if you're claustrophobic. - Definitely worth grabbing a dessert or two.
google avatar

Jovina B.

Yelp
This is a mandatory stop while driving on highway 395. So many pastries, bread, gelato...the choices are limitless. We bought almond croissant, scones, macaroons and their original sheepherder bread. My only regret is not doubling my order since this bakery is a couple hundred miles from me. Everything was amazing! This place gets pretty busy but not early in the morning or in the evening just before they close. Lots of parking. Service is great and everyone was helpful. I definitely will come back and stock up next time we visit.

Alice M.

Yelp
This bakery is amazing. The customer service is wonderful an excellent. I would recommend this bakery to anybody for my first time going there. I was very impressed by the people and just all the baked goods they had.
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
Word to the wise: not always open til 6. This place is tasty and was my linner plan after 200 miles of driving. Alas, they closed early today. This is the second time in a row this has happened to me. 5-star sando. 2-star unpredictable hours. 3-star employees who are bustling but few of whom understand English well enough to direct traffic.
google avatar

Joanna B.

Yelp
I've heard too many good things about this bakery to not stop on our way through bishop. Service was quick and friendly, despite being incredibly busy. Tables are available outside to enjoy your treat. We got the strawberry eclair which was the best eclair I've ever had in my life. To be honest, probably top 5 pastries I've had. Soooooo good. We also got some kind of cheese stuffed pastry. It was also good! We were pretty full at the time so we didn't eat it until the evening. We were camping and stuck it on a skewer over the fire to warm up and it was sooo good too!! I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Chanson H.

Yelp
Erick Schat's does not disappoint. The sheepherder's bread is seemingly a simple white bread, but yet so flavorful and rich in taste. My favorite is the chili cheese breadsticks, which has a savory focaccia like texture, but complemented with a slight kick of heat from the chilis. I can devour all six sticks at one sitting without a problem. The banana walnut loaf, as well as croissants are winners as well.

Yelp
The 7 grain bread, sheephearder's bread and choc chip shortbread cookies are the best!

Yelp
It's such a iconic spot in this little cute town. My husband and I drove back from Mammoth and stopped by this bakery. It surprised us when we walked in, I will say this place is a heaven of all types of cookies, pastries and breads. We got several different kinds of cookies and breads to go. The bread we got is their original Sheepherder bread. They also offer some samples, they all taste great!

Yelp
A staple in Bishop and i always hit this place at least once while in the area for Mammoth. This time around we bought a Tuna Sandwich and Caramel Apple with Nuts. The tuna sandwich was filling and had great flavor! It was also very fresh and great portioning. One sandwich cut in half was more than enough for a light lunch for 2! The caramel apple was also delicious and had a perfectly thin layer of caramel that also was not overly sweet and was easy to eat!

Yelp
I always make sure to stop at this place when I'm going through Bishop! It's usually super busy so you just gotta roll with it! The sandwiches, bakery items and other goodies you'll find are totally worth it! I picked up a loaf of the sheepherder's bread which is literally the BEST EVER!! Must stop here! Enjoy!

Yelp
According to my wife Kayla T, Erick Schat's Bakkery is a must visit for their energy loaf which is packed dense with tons of nutritious ingredients and calories in carb form. TBH the line may look intimidating but you can quickly grab a loaf of energy loaf off the rack which are all baked fresh daily and easily check out within minutes.

Yelp
The selection of fresh bread and baked products blew me away! So many choices. I have to bring my wife back here, she loves bread and I know she would love this place too. In addition to a great loaf of bread I ordered a breakfast bagel. It is the best breakfast I've ever had, hands down. I only wish I was going to be in town tomorrows so I could get another! I will be back...

Yelp
Stopped by on Sunday after our skiing weekend and apparently everybody was doing that. The shop was packed. A lot of people in n out. Long line to both sandwich and cafe. Waited about 30min to get my sandwich. Hot pastrami was great. Mule sandwich was a bit disappointing the bread was cold and there were too much mustard. Love the display of the goodies. They also have bread tasting. Also got the energy bread. Love it.
