7 Destinations for a Different Kind of Oregon Trail

"In 1943, with World War II surging overseas, the United States constructed the Madras Army Air Field in central Oregon to train American soldiers for war. When the conflict ended, the facility’s two massive hangars were left mostly vacant—until 2014, when one of them became a museum housing the Erickson Aircraft Museum. Occupying the entirety of the hangar’s 64,000 square feet, the unique collection features 20 military planes dating back to the Second World War. It is one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of original WWII-era aircraft, spanning from fighter planes to ducks. The best opportunity the museum offers, however, is the ability to fly in the planes themselves. The aircraft museum is one of the few places out there where you can ride in a warbird from the 1930s or ’40s, a dream come true for vintage plane enthusiasts. Back on solid ground, some special models on display include the Madras Maiden, easily identified by the lady in red painted on the side; the J2F-6 Duck, a water-faring craft once placed on aircraft carriers; and the Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk, the front of which is designed as an angry face with sharp teeth.  In addition to the vintage planes, the collection includes Jeeps, bomber jackets, classic cars, historic photos, and even a tank, giving a closer look at the equipment and apparel made in the war effort." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

What a wonderful surprise! I have seen the billboards on hwy26 for this collection and finally had time to stop in. I was totally blown away by the working aircraft in this private collection. There are some very unique and impressive planes here. I also loved being able to take a peek at the aircraft in mid-restoration. And finally, as with any great collection, the memorabilia and articles and items that surround the collection are just as fascinating, including several stories of veterans from the surrounding area. It may not be the biggest air museum I've ever been to, but I would definitely recommend it as worth the stop.

Great collection of pieces of history. A very pleasant and atmospheric museum. As a huge aviation, history and adventure enthusiast, I was inspired by the museum's commitment to preserving its holdings. All planes are found in such a condition as if they had flown yesterday. some even leak engine oil onto carefully placed containers. It is clear that the planes are alive, they continue to live for the joy of future generations.

There are many things to look at, not just aircraft. It took a few hours for the visit. The young man at the entrance was helpful and knowledgeable about the museum. It's a shame that they don't have a hanger for the restorations, and then the other aircraft could be spread out more. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to get a picture of just one plane. And because of that, it'd be great if they had postcards in the giftshop of each of their collection. We still enjoyed the museum and highly recommend it if you're in the area!

Google
The largest collection of flying WWII aircraft I've ever seen. Nearly 30 single and twin engine planes, plus a B-17. Some engines and other things as well are on display. The $9 (summer 2024) entry seemed low to me, and I don't say that often. I wish the gift shop had better offerings, especially with books related to the aircraft, but that's minor next to museum experience. Lastly, clean restrooms. 👌

Wanted to take in the "new" home for these aircraft (since they were moved from Tillamook several years ago). Not quite as extensive (yet) as the Flying Heritage Museum, but these pieces of history fly as they were created to. Which is preferable to simply suffering the fate of merely being on static display (just a personal opinion). It is far more realistic to see oil streaks and exhaust soot from them playing among the clouds than a concours-quality paint job (gorgeous as they may be) on a plane whose flying days are likely all behind them. We were even allowed to walk out on the apron in front of the hanger to get "up close and personal" with a P-51, B-17, what appears to be a plexiglass nose B-25J, and a Grumman J2F "Duck." What an experience! We will definitely be adding this to our list of places to take out of town visitors, and best of all, the drive does not involve having to navigate Sesttle traffic on I-5!

On July 17th, 2024, we stopped at the Erickson Aircraft Museum, which was a highlight for me. The museum showcases some incredible airplanes from the past and is home to one of the world's largest collections of vintage aircraft. However, I was a bit disappointed that they did not highlight any of their Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane helicopters or other helicopters. These Skycranes are particularly interesting as they are used in heavy-lift operations, including firefighting and logging. Despite this, the museum is definitely worth a visit for aviation enthusiasts.

Had an amazing experience! Not every day you get to see and stand next to a P-51 Mustang, P-40 Warhawk, and a P-38 Lighting and then see them in flight! The staff was awesome!!! The airplanes, along with the history they are associated with, need to be remembered and honored forever!

Google
This place is awesome! They are in the middle of restoring a B-17G and a B-25 Mitchell (I think, the airframe is pretty disassembled), stuff you don't get to see usually. Pretty cool experience

Yelp
Great air museum at the Madras airport. Lots of air worthy WW2 aircraft and artifacts. Very clean and orig sized and AC on a hot day!

Yelp
What a find!!!! Such history! This is worth a detour or even a special trip if you like airplanes or war history. Wow! We went on a weekday and had the whole place to ourselves. All of these planes (and there are a LOT of planes) are in flying condition and they take them out and fly them on occasion. If your schedule if flexible, give them a call to see when they will be flying and maybe you can witness that spectacle! Anyway, allow a couple of hours to go through the museum and be sure to read all the signage and displays. Wonderfully curated!!!

Yelp
I found this museum to be such a cool and moving tribute to American history that I do plans to go back for a repeat visit. Passing through the area and discovering this spot on a lucky chance, we stopped in to see what it was about. Was I ever glad we did.... The planes and vehicles on display in this museum are important pieces of American history as well as global history. Most of the items showcasing the WW2 era and all are in flying or driving condition with one exception, a B17 being currently restored. The craft are in impeccable condition slabs are thoughtfully arranged in the hangar/museum. As a boy I enjoyed studying this time period in school the most and seeing these planes on display filled me with nostalgia and pride. Thank you Erickson - I'll be back!!

Yelp
Outstanding! The best thing about this collection is that the aircraft are not roped off. You can pretty much explore them as long as you dont crawl on them or open any panels. The planes are all airworthy, so they have oil and hydraulic fluid dripping out of them. Excellent examples of some pretty rare aircraft such as a Ki-43, F6F-5, P-39, F8F, Bf-109 and FW-190. The usual warbirds are there as well. A hidden gem we discovered on our way through.

Yelp
What a great way to honor and display, but still actively let these birds fly! They're all arranging so you can really get up close and personal with the planes. Great auto surprises too!

Yelp
Very cool. There are substantially more aircraft in the Erickson collection than I had imagined, and they are supported by excellent informational sign and displays. Prices for museum admission are quite reasonable at $9 general admission. I toured the museum as part of admission to the annual Air Show of the Cascades (which is also reasonably priced - free to veterans). Want to ride in one of the planes? Erickson offers rides in the Stearman, Texan or DC3 for a substantial chunk of money (aircraft operating costs are high). The website says the Catalina PBY will be added to the group soon, as well.

Yelp
What a wonderful museum! It was fun getting to walk right next to the planes, something you cannot do at other flight museums. And, the prices were extremely reasonable. Kim was absolutely wonderful and a delight to talk to. She hosted us during our visit and gave us extensive information on the planes, the building, and even the surrounding town. We decided to stop here after driving by numerous times over countless years. Finally, we are so very glad to have stopped. We will undoubtedly be back on our next trip to Bend (or anywhere south!).

Yelp
Great collection of vintage aircraft that you can get right up to so you can see everything. I visit here a couple times a month.

Russell G.

Yelp
Well worth the time and effort to see living history as the planes are almost all flyable. Where else can you see a Wildcat, Hellcat, and a Bearcat not to mention an Avenger. The Dauntless in the collection makes this collection a Pacific War exhibit that is exceptional. There is a Duck which is rare to find static let alone flight worthy. A must see presentation that is a credit to the vision of Mr. Ericsson. Friendly staff in beautiful central Oregon. The air show has to be amazing so make your way to something very special.

Yelp
Very impressive collection of vintage aircraft from crop dusters to fighter/bombers from all over the world! A few of which are the only ones left in flying condition. Admission is cheap and totally worth it. They have nice bathrooms and a good souvenir selection. Be sure to stop by and see this fantastic museum!

Yelp
We have lived in Bend since 2012 and had not yet visited the Erickson. The address just wouldn't pull up on my GPS but the signs off 97 are very clear and you can't miss it. We visited on a Sunday at noon. There was plenty of parking and we had the place to ourselves. My 4yr old, 7yr old and one adult gained admission for 14.00. Not a bad price at all. We walked around the huge hangar for about an hour. The kids really enjoyed themselves. The bathrooms were very large and extremely clean. We spent about 30.00 in the gift shop which had a little bit of everything. The aircraft were beautiful and the tour is self guided which we really liked. There isn't anywhere to get food so make sure you pack a lunch or snacks. If I had one complaint it would be that there needs to be a few things for kids to do. They do have a fire truck and the kids could ring a bell. Maybe some interactive games or a cockpit they could sit in. I would love to help come up with some ideas. Even a station where kids could make airplanes and land them on a cardboard aircraft carrier. Again we were blown away by the museum. It's a great place to stop and the money is well spent there. I highly recommend a visit to the Erickson.

Yelp
Great collection of airplanes and great facility! There was live music performances on the day we visited along with very friendly staff.

Yelp
Awesome to see these historic aircraft on the Madras airfield, flying overhead, and on display in the new Erickson Aircraft Museum! Be sure to visit...something for everyone!

Yelp
Erickson was super cool. Had WAY more aircraft than I thought. They even have airplane rides! Great place to spend part of the day.

Yelp
I had a few hours to kill and decided to check out the local air museum while I was in Madras. Very nice second WW air craft display. Lots of engines on stands, well preserved aircraft, friendly and knowledge people and a gift shop that rivals any air show. The cost was reasonable and I really enjoyed my visit. Next time I'm in Madras I plan to go again there is so much to see. I highly recommend this to anybody who's interested in historical aircraft.

Karen K.

Yelp
A terrific surprise! It's not the largest air museum however it's super interesting: rare airplanes, great info and a friendly front desk person named Annie who is incredibly helpful. Wherever you are, it's worth the trip.

Sally G.

Yelp
Be aware that there is no safe place to turn a large RV around and no place to park one. We have been to several aviation museums, including SeaTac, Arizona, Tillamook, etc. This was the first time we had an issue with parking or turning around. We never made it inside the museum - it was all we could do to get out 35' motor home with tow car turned around without damaging either rig.

Bonnie A.

Yelp
Good variety of planes. Good signage to explain what you are looking at. Clean, nice facility. Inexpensive afternoon of entertainment. We would recommend this attraction for all ages.
