Eric's Restaurant

This is my second, maybe third, time dining at Erick’s, a Chinese restaurant located in the Noe Valley District near Church and 27th Street. Every time I go there, I hope my experience will be better than the last one. My main concern is that when I go out to eat, I expect the food to be served (warm, if not hot). That is what most people look for when dining out. Otherwise, we could just stay home and eat something from the freezer. I can hear the cooking happening in the kitchen, but for some reason, by the time the food reaches my table, it is (cold). Another issue is the owner, the lady at the front. She could put a little smile on her face. A friendly attitude helps customers feel more comfortable and welcome.

Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday, and was really impressed with the food! It came out super fast, the service was nice, and the atmosphere is chill. We ordered three dishes: Eric’s Spicy Eggplant, General Tso’s chicken & Snow Peas Moo Goo chicken. They were all great dishes and will absolutely be ordering them again. Don’t skip Eric’s spicy eggplant!

I have been coming here for about five years and every time I’ve eaten the food it’s still delicious. Great service , clean space and pretty ambience. I love the simple decor. This is truly a great classic a San Francisco. Today I have general szo chicken, sesame, beef, and egg fried rice, all three dishes were delicious. I highly recommend coming here.

So here we are again, trying a new place in a neighborhood which I haven't spent much time in. Somehow the evening called for Chinese food and we decided to give Eric a try. One thing is for sure. Eric has left the building or an apprentice with the same name took over the cooking. Let's start from the beginning. Eric's can make a name for itself for the fastest fast food restaurant, even McDonald's could learn from Eric's. We sat down, we place the order of three dishes and they all arrived in under 2 min. Ouch, that was the first warning sign, the 2nd warning sign , they all looked the same. The 3rd warning sign, they all tasted the same. Dear chef, you don't need to dislike your craft that much. The beef was already dead. No need to drown it XO Sauce a 2nd time around. Same goes for the egg plant, please cherish this beautiful vegetable, don't take your frustrations out on it. 5000 years of Chinese cuisine and that's what you came up with? Just take a fork and stab me, it would be less painful. Yes the interior is pretty nice.

I just ate their food for the first time. Amazing flavors, loved the String Beans and Walnut Prawns. Very clean restaurant with a quiet atmosphere. Server is very nice, always attentive making sure you stay happy. I made sure to tell the chef thank you in person!

Been going to Eric's since it opened in the early '90s. It is the bar at which I set neighborhood Chinese restaurants by. Very few have come close. The general cho's chicken is far and away my favorite of any I've had, period. The szechuan beef is also exceptional. Again, this is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants of all time. The hoisin string beans and Eric's spicy eggplant are also quite good. Crab rangoon and pop stickers are some of my favorites as well, the green onion pancakes are excellent too. In truth, I've never had anything that resembles an average meal there. The pricing on this review reflects a meal with two children, and no beverages, fyi.

A nice & comfy neighborhood Chinese cuisine go to. We were visiting our close friends in San Fran & treated ourselves to this fare. It was a busy 5p dinner hour as we were seated at a table adjacent to a couple of big tables. We were greeted by a staff member (young Asian gentleman), he seemed a bit off as he quickly asked for our order of drinks. Service timing was good- our drinks arrived in 5 mins, food was served in approx 17 min. The Geneneral Tsos's chicken is the Best we've ever had anywhere, as well as the Stir Fried Green Beens. We ordered a noodle dish - Eric's Chow Mein - a definite fail! - flavor was OK, but noodles were not fresh, hard to the "chew", maybe intended to serve 'al dente' but not really, it's not fresh. Also ordered - Ocean Garden, which was a beautifully served in a fried noodle basket. The flavor was good, however, the basket it was served in was very tough & possibly not edible. Not sure if it was meant to be part of the dish, but it was very tough to even break a piece & try it. So we did not really favor this one either. A young Asian Lady staff was very pleasant as she attended to us with refills on tea & drinks. I noticed the many "to-go" orders which is a good sign for the other choices in their menu that we can try, possibly when we visit again. Service was OK, and could use a more warmer & welcoming reception.

I order two dishes, 1. Egg Fried Rice, good seasoning with plenty of egg in the mixture, 2. Eric’s Special Chow Mein, sautéed broccoli, asparagus, carrots and onions with a dark, savory sweet sauce with a pleasant mouth-feeling taste that activates the brain pleasure zone. The restaurant is located on the corner of Church and 27th Street on a clean neighborhood with the J train stopping near by.

Always great food! Fresh seafood and excellent service A lovely place for a meal The one caveat is if you get food to go double check your order I came in today and didn't get my rice!! Now I'm too far away to go back I'm not going to boycott the place but damn man I feel cheated

This is your typical casual Chinese neighborhood spot. White linen tables, cheap glasses of wine, and hearty portions for entrees. I tried the vegetarian chow mein, kung pao meatless chicken, and the string beans with bean curd. The vegetarian chow mein was al dente and will not be ordered again. The meatless chicken (made of mushroom I think) was a great protein substitute and delicious too. The string beans with bean curd tasted fresh and exactly what I desired for in the dish with crunchy, seasoned tofu. I think the key to this place is knowing what's the best to order, and if you like it spicy - ask for it from the start.

Living in Noe, I've been going to Eric's for years and years. A lovely neighborhood spot with beautiful natural light, large windows and nicely spaced tables I love sitting in the window and watching the J Church roll by. Food is quite tasty if not as authentic as some other Chinese places I go to. The hot and sour soup is definitely one of the best I've had. I've tried lots of dishes there, liked some better than others. It's a matter of taste. But you will find something to like. A nice spot for lunch in Noe Valley. Good service. ( mu shu pork or chicken and hunan fish are good!)

This is one of my favorite restaurants!!! I always try to come here, when I am in SF. The food is always on point. The staff is friendly and helpful. There are items on the menu, that I have never seen else where. I never been disappointed with anything that I have ordered. This place has been here for about 32 years. I have been coming for over 20 years now. The Shanghai Chicken is so delicious! The Hunan Fish is crispy and cooked to perfection. One of my favorite dishes is Eric's Spicy Eggplant. (Which is not spicy at all.) I will definitely be coming back again!

New favorite, seriously. Food is excellent quality with generous portions. We got potsticker, the chicken special, garlic prawns, garlic green beans, sweet and sour pork and sesame beef. Everything was excellent!

Our favorite neighborhood go-to for classic Chinese American food. Both for take-out but especially dine-in where the meal comes with hot tea and good service, in a bright airy space on pleasant stretch of Church Street in Noe Valley .

Elegant for the observer. A nice restaurant for sitting and sipping tea. Rainbow fish, brown rice, and the best hot and sour soup in the city.

I really love this place! I've been ordering from them online for a few years now and today was my first time visiting the restaurant. The atmosphere is warm, clean, and inviting and the service is great. My food came out quickly and the food felt fresh and not too greasy. I got the five taste chicken and it's become a personal favorite. Their vegetarian general tso's chicken is also quite nice too for all the non meat eaters. Balanced menu and great service.

I don't understand why this place is so popular. The food is just ok. I've had way better. The place is small and they crammed way too many tables in there. The staff is nice.

Wow, is this place a surprise. Some friends of mine had gone here for years, but I am have a gluten allergy and when you say Chinese, I kind of run. Then I went to Eric's oh my God what a beautiful neighborhood Restaurant this is a super find if you'd like Chinese high-quality Chinese this is a darling nestled in Noe valley They were super helpful with my gluten allergy and I'm still sort of stunned at how well they deali with my request

The bag is misleading - it looks like you can carry it vertically since there's a handle, but the food boxes are placed horizontally. Unfortunately, this caused the food to leak badly on the way back to my place. The food itself was heavily soy-sauced, which overwhelmed the flavors

Love this gem in the Noe Valley neighborhood of SF. A charm-filled clean lined aesthetic. Friendly and hardworking staff...food is amazing and we are never disappointed with all dishes we have ordered. Love the slice of lemon in the water glass. We so enjoy the combination appetizer platter and add a dish or two and a meal is enjoyed.

Excellent food choices. Not your usual Chinese cuisine. Prices were very affordable. Quick delivery and accurate. Five star food. Nice people to deal with.

What's not to love about Eric's?! Great food, fast and friendly service, and reasonable prices. As much as things change it is nice a few places stay the same and that's a blessing when it comes to fresh and tasty Chinese cuisine. Start with the dumplings or spring rolls and then decide among dozens of entree options. We ALWAYS end up with the special eggplant and hoisin string beans. Add the brown rice and you, my dear reader, have created an unforgettable meal. Enjoy!

It was a dark and stormy night...I was riding the J train back to my AirBnB on Cesar Chavez. I was hungry, it was raining, and I needed something easy. As I stepped off the train at 27th, Eric's sign beckoned me. As a single diner I was quickly directed to a cozy window seat, supplied with a menu, hot tea, and ice water. So far so good! When I looked up their Yelp page for menu suggestions, I was a little discouraged by the negative reviews, but went for the Spicy Eggplant that was suggested by another reviewer. OMG! It was amazing! Best Chinese food I've had in decades. (I live in North Orange County.) The service was friendly and prompt. I will be returning here on my next visit to Noe Valley.

Lackluster food, served indifferently. All the typical American Chinese stuff with the same few sweet/salty/bland sauces on top. I wouldn't come here expecting very much, and if you know and appreciate real Chinese food, you won't find it here. The unsmiling woman who brought our food didn't know to apologize when the kitchen gets an order wrong. Even a perfunctory "sorry!" would have been a good start. She just shoots an unfriendly and annoyed look and turns around without a word. Then brings it back on a plate which obviously has had the wrong dish scraped off and the right one plopped in its place. Had kung pao chicken with uncooked cold peanuts sprinkled on top (not cooked with the food like it's supposed to be). Didn't say a word, but just made a mental note about how bad it tasted that way. How did they get a Michelin recommended sticker back in the day? It's been a while since they had it, maybe ten years, but they still have the smiling Michelin man on the cover of their latest menu. Hmm ... just a bit deceptive? Especially considering how they are doing things today. Whatever they were doing back then to impress their customers, it's not evident today.

We ordered delivery from Eric's yesterday via DoorDash and were super impressed with the food! It was delicious! We especially enjoyed the chicken chow mein and the garlic chicken - both were excellent! We also appreciated the fact they included plates and napkins upon request. Highly recommend for Chinese take out or delivery!

Nice humble laid-back restaurant. Excellent crab rangoon. Large portions with more shrimp than I've gotten in a single serving in a long time. Was crowded on a weekday for lunch.

This place is not authentic Chinese food we we're disappointed. I rather eat at Panda Express at least they have a good taste...

I've been to this restaurant quite a few times since my last review and these folks are consistently good, the quality of food and service. This update is to praise a kind gesture. I had the eggplant lunch special dish and the serving was abundant so I didn't finish my meal, in fact, I only consumed half of the eggplant plate. I mac'ed on the rice though. At the end of the meal, they asked if I wanted the rest to take home and I did. Later that evening, as I dove into the to-go box, guess what? They had furnished me with rice to go along with my leftover eggplant and that became my full dinner. What a cool surprise. How thoughtful of these folks and I love this place for such a nice act. To me, that's what a great neighborhood restaurant does. I truly appreciate these folks.

The food is fantastic. The service is good. It's a very chill restaurant. parking may not be good in that area but the food makes up for it lol

Just had take out. Needed to find a neighborhood Chinese restaurant this side of town. Had the lovely chicken with pea pods and mushrooms and silky eggplant. Enough to have it tonight again. I think it's worth the drive across town to continue to eat at Eric's.

Had dinner . Ordered Mu Shu chicken, asparagus shrimp , Mongolian beef and mixed vegetables.. Portions generous and freshly made. The sauces on the beef and shrimp were very similar but tasty. Excellent service and definitely a place we'll return.

The other day, we went to Eric's for lunch and had a negative experience. I ordered the eggplant with garlic sauce and my wife had the chicken/snow peas, each served with a mound of white rice. The eggplant dish had a cloyingly sweet sauce which overpowered everything. The chicken and snow peas dish was a little better, however it was so bland that my wife had to ask for soy sauce to add a little flavor! The service was cursory, at best, and the server seemed indifferent, although he was more engaging with other diners. We had to wait awhile to be served by him, although a friendly woman came and gave us tea and water. Unfortunately, she did not serve us. Overall, the food was just ok, with either overly sauced and bland dishes. The service was so-so, even hostile at times, and we definitely will not be going back even though we live in Noe Valley.

First time. Nice atmosphere. Tall ceilings with and good spacing between tables. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Food came out fresh and hot. Lunch specials include soup. A good meal in a pleasant environment.

I came in while trying to kill an hour - it was busy but I was sat within 5 minutes & my order taken within the next 5. I ordered the crab rangoons which were pretty good & filling, & the sweet and sour chicken lunch special. The chicken was crispy which I loved but the chicken itself didn't have too much flavor, but there was lots of sweet & sour sauce. The lunch special also came with a cup of the soup of the day, which was some tofu corn soup. It was good but they didn't really tell me what it was when they gave it to me. The sweet & sour chicken came in a large portion & I ended up taking 2/3 of it home as I was pretty full from the 6 crab rangoons! The server packed it in a box for me. Overall solid place - it took about 20 minutes from when I ordered for my sweet & sour chicken to come out.

Food is outstanding here, it isn't your average style Chinese food, it is mandarin style so be prepared to have a different type of Chinese culture brought to the table. I recommend the sample appetizer platter to enjoy and try all the appetizers. Enough for 2 to share. I always get the Erik's chow main. The sauce it has is delicious but the only thing I will say is that they used the same sauce on a lot of their other dishes so be aware. I also love the Mongolian beef which doesn't crowd the plate with a bunch of different veggies to try and make the plate look bigger than it is. The service is always good, and they are generous with portions. However my girl did find a hair in the food, BUT I am convinced I was her hair because the cooks and all the other workers have black hair which didn't match the hair she picked out. The ambience is great there is a lot of friendly banter from regulars who have been coming here for years. Every friend I have ever brought by here always requests Erik's whenever I say I'm in the mood for Chinese. Keep it up guys you are doing great!

Food: I always get Eric's Chow main, and it was always good. The last time I ordered, there was a ball of hair in my order. I had to throw both my orders away it was so disgusting. Service: Service here is always great. The waiters cooks. Everyone is always very nice. Ambiance: Very pretty and cozy.

This is my go to casual Chinese restaurant in SF. We've been going to Eric's for years and it never disappoints.

Unassuming restaurant on a quiet street at the base of a Victorian building with natural light and airy coolness, yet fairly no-frills hardwood floors, casually potted plants and white tablecloths. Prompt refills of ice water and hot tea. Scoops of steamed white rice may have been more than a day old and did not bode well for our party (first visit) and inconsistent dish plates on multiple visits. Take a pass on their overrated soups, thickened brown gravy appears to be their sole savory mother sauce for many of their menu options thus becomes one dimensional. Lack of true authenticity in profile flavors. Abrasive curt waiter. Non traditional fusion menu options.

Food: ***** we started with the avocado rolls. Basically an egg roll with avocado and other veggies in it. Incredibly delicious and served with a garlic cilantro dipping sauce. The entrees were Mongolian Beef (incredibly tender meat and flavorful, General Tao's chicken, tender breast meat and veggies in a great sauce and the mixed fried rice. Everything was a hit! Service: I didn't get her name, but this was yesterday (Sunday) evening and she was stellar! We started ordering too much food and cautioned us about over ordering since the portions are good size. She was right! She made great suggestions and the service could not be better: friendly, attentive and genuine. Ambiance: this place is upscale casual. Jeans t-shirt OK as well as a little dress up date night. Their place is versatile- great for meeting up with friends or a date night. Going back next week!

The food was solid, staff attentive. Highly recommend the appetizer platter for 2, and the beef was great. The chicken chow mein was incredibly disappointing next to no flavor.

We ordered the beef chow mein and five spice chicken- both great. Service was very fast, and food was pretty affordable. Will defiantly be returning!

Updated review... Food has always been good. Service is now warm and inviting. We come nearly every week and they are treating us like family... very sweet!

Just ordered late lunch. Potstickers- good Garlic chicken lunch - not much garlic flavor, not sure what flavor, it was okay. Mongolian Beef entree - see pic - enough said! Chow Mein with chicken - expected chicken and noodles. Noodles had zero flavor, chicken was the same as the garlic chicken. Did not want all the vegetables which might be a bonus for others but not what I expected. Price point - way too expensive

Two for dinner: ordered (1) sizzling rice soup, (2) lemon prawns, (3) Kung Pao chicken. Service was perfunctory. Server was stone faced as she put the soup in the bowls. (1) Soup: devoid of flavor, rice tasted stale and old, vegetables were passable. (2) Prawns: A W F U L!!! Each of us ate just one and nearly spit them out. Sweet to a fault - drowning in a tasteless bath of sugary goop. There was enough breading to choke a horse and it was apparently undercooked. Between us, we ate only two of them leaving the remainder on the plate. (3) Kung Pao Chicken: Maybe one tablespoon of peanuts, and virtually NO chicken (one tablespoon at most of FINELY diced meat), drowning in a river of soy sauce, with enough peppers and zucchini to try and hide the missing chicken. Drowning in soy sauce. We left most of it on plate, too. Bitter tasting. Cost: $59 for two. Ridiculous. Go elsewhere. It's not what it used to be. I used to really enjoy this place. No more. You'll get better food at Panda Express and that isn't saying much either.

customer service was awful, i called in to order he just hung up in my face, soon as i walk in to pick my order up he was rude. Not sure if it was cuz i was hispanic didn't wanna associate with me, the food had no flavor. Do better Eric

Really delicious avocado egg rolls. Food came out fresh and fast. Nice seating inside, very clean. Crab Rangoon was really delicious.

I've been coming to Eric's since I was a child and I will keep going till I can't. Food is amazing as always, service amazing as always. They don't forget a face! Clean, cozy, warm and inviting. my friends that not longer live in SF visit and say "hey I'm craving Eric's" every time. brought my father-in-law from American Samoa and he wants to come every time he visits now. I haven't had a dish I wasn't a fan of! And on holidays - it's a sight to see... lines of cars around the block waiting for pick up and the place is packed. Love them!!

Eric's is another goto standard for me. From eating its eating it table seating or getting delivery it never disappoints. The spicy dishes are indeed hot. So check with your server when ordering. They have a good balance of the usual and less obvious dishes. Wait can be long on weekends.

Super delish! Went here with some friends and we ordered dishes for the table and all dug in. You can't beat their walnut prawns, dumplings, potstickers, green beans, and fried rice ... just to name a few! The service was excellent and food was fresh, hot, and tasty. I will definitely visit again.

it is unfortunate to have to share this review. After years of patronizing Eric's the rude and racist behavior exhibited today will prevent me and my family from ever ordering from here again. I ordered food in advance for the Oscar's and asked my father to pick it up. For some reason they told him there was nothing to pick up - meanwhile I had the text message indicating the order was ready. I called and they questioned me about the order and then hung the phone up. I called three more times and they continued to not answer my questions and hung up. Ordering food online is the simplest thing to do, but when my gut tells me something else was up here - I trust it. If Eric's is not interested in Black people as customers then no problem - there are too many other amazing places to order from. Shame on you Eric's - you have lost a longtime fan and instead of encouraging others to eat here I will share a very different point of view.
