"Ernie’s Market is a beloved Oak Park landmark that’s been faithfully drawing lunch crowds for years with its huge, affordable sandwiches served on fresh-baked onion rolls. Don’t be surprised if proprietor Ernie himself slips you a few chilled Hershey’s Kisses from the deli case while he assembles your order. This spot recently upgraded with a new outdoor patio, though it’s still cash-only." - Brenna Houck

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Best Sandwich You’ll Ever Have—Period. Ernie’s Market is a Metro Detroit must. Don’t let the humble, no-frills setting fool you—this unassuming deli tucked into a corner market is home to absolute sandwich magic. You’ll wait in line in an aisle next to old cans and pop bottles, soaking in the “charm.” When it’s your turn, you’ll be greeted by some of the kindest, most genuine people you’ll ever meet. Then they’ll make you a sandwich that looks simple—until you take a bite. It’s filling, flavorful, and somehow exactly what you didn’t know you were craving. The ingredients, the care, the balance… it’s not just lunch. It’s an experience. Ernie is a legend. This place is a gem. If you’re anywhere near Metro Detroit, make the trip. You won’t regret it.and if you live in the area and have not supported this living legend, now is your time. Cash only

🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪Go for the sandwiches. Come back for Ernie—the red ball capped owner who greets everyone with a smile and handshake. When I told him it was our first time he replied “I know!” This tiny sandwich shop in the middle of a neighborhood turns out the best, freshest, piled high sandwiches in town. As one customer commented “be prepared to unhinge your jaw.” Let Ernie or his staff design your sandwich. Otherwise you’ll never experience two different cheeses, multiple meats, thinly sliced green peppers, 🫑 Jalapeños, and Earnies patented love spice. GO NOW 🚀

Google
Great sandwiches made with top notch ingredients! Ernie’s is a long time gem and has won best sandwich by channel 4 many years in a row. Monster sandwich shown is 14 bucks with 7 meats, 2 cheeses and a huge variety of toppings/condiments to choose from…you must get the Ernie’s spice on your sandwich to take it to another level! Ernie is there a lot of the time and he comes out to greet customers and he is such a cool dude…like he says “who loves ya baby! Ernie does!”

Google
CASH ONLY!! This is easily the best sandwich I’ve ever had. And everyone who works there is so nice. Ernie came out to shake my hand and tell me about the shop and how it’s been in his family for 100 years. I got the little monster sandwich and the macaroni salad. The sandwich was BOMB and the max salad was alright, they were sold out of all the other sides so I’ll have to come back to try those. Definitely coming back here asap

Google
Amazing sandwich, good price, massively recommend if you’re tired of small portions. I ate a monster as my first sandwich with everything on it except Cucumbers

Google
Ernie's Market deli sandwiches are truly magnificent! My dad and I went and tried the Monster sandwiches that have all 7 meats on it our 1st time. It was Amazing. Since it was our 1st time they wouldn't cut our sandwiches. They said,"you have to fight it and figure it out!" The whole it experience was great. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. It a must try. Definitely going back

Google
Had one for the first time today and it was the Best and biggest deli sandwich I've ever had. Because it was my first time they didn't cut it and called me a newbie. I got the pterodactyl bird monster. All I can say is I will definitely be going back.

Somebody tell me what took me soooooooo long to finally go to Ernie's Market!!!?!?!? My daughter asked for a deli sandwich so today we ventured over to Ernie's and they did NOT disappoint!!!! I had the Baby Monster on onion roll with all the veggies, mayo, mustard, and LOVE seasoning🔥 My sandwich was sooooo delicious and I can't wait to eat the other half! My daughter had the double meat with veggies, LOVE seasoning, extra mayo and oil. She said her sandwich was AMAZING!! We even met Ernie and he was the cutest!! We'll definitely be back again! Thank you 💕

Yelp
Meeting Ernie made the entire trip worth it. We have know about this spot for a very long time, but we finally were able to make our way over here to try the famous sandwiches. We had the honor of meeting Ernie himself and he was quite fun and very entertaining. We arrived right before the shop opened. Even standing in line was fun, we met many friendly people and heard a lot of stories about people's lives. A man who arrived the same time we did came all the way from Seattle to get a sandwich. The people working the shop and preparing the sandwiches were very friendly. They went out of their way to make up feel welcome, they even gave us a sample of the love seasoning on a cucumber to make sure we liked the taste. Since Ernie has taken a back seat to making the sandwiches, he was not there when we arrived, and they took pride in honoring all of his wishes, including, if it is your first time, he does not want your sandwich but, he wants you to fight through the monster. They had some delicious looking chips and cold salads and a case of beverages. But we just wanted the sandwiches. As they wrapped our sandwiches, that was when Ernie arrived. He made sure to talk to us, draw the hearts on the parchment paper, and make sure we were having a good time. We took them to the picnic tables outside. While Ernie was doing chores, he took some extra time to speak to us a bit more. He even greeted all of his neighbors in the area, he is the friendliest. The sandwiches were nice, piled high with meat, veggies, and mustard, mayo, love spice and olive oil. They were quite the battle to eat, of course there were leftovers. Ernie was a great host and hopes everyone returns soon.

Yelp
Everything was Awesome!!! The service was impeccable!!!! The food was flawless!!! And The Ambience was giving (Your About To Have The Best Lunch Of Your Life!!!!)

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Ernie's is one of my favorite places ever. The sandwiches are the best and if you are lucky enough to catch Ernie there, it makes your day, week or even month. Ernie brings so much joy anytime you see him. Hes amazing and the sandwiches are too!

Bernard J.

Yelp
It lived up to the hype! I got the Ernie's Monster with everything, and it was a huge sandwich! The meats were excellent, the veggies fresh and cheese pairing perfect! The onion roll was soft and fresh, and I had them make it with all the condiments and Ernie's spice mix. And for those who complain about the price, for what you get it's priced good. Everyone wants gourmet food at fast food prices and that's what kills these businesses. They offer a high quality product, it's going to cost a bit more. But I would rather keep a business like Ernie's going than force them to compromise on quality ingredients! And as a plus I got to meet Ernie and shake his hand! The staff was excellent and I highly recommend you give it a try! I am looking forward to trying more from here and spending my money on a local business/institution!

Sanna G.

Yelp
Great value. Charming hole in the wall. Service at the counter was a bit dry and difficult to keep up with while ordering as a first-timer, but the cashier was very friendly and sweet, so that made up for it. Would certainly recommend to anyone who likes a simple sandwich that's portioned large enough to feed a small village.

Caroline B.

Yelp
Service was fun. The line was long. Only bad part was that the sandwich has to be eaten right away because it became very soggy when consumed later.

phil h.

Yelp
Ernie's is a great little neighborhood market. Ernie will come talk with you if you ask to say hi The sandwiches are great and have been voted as the top sandwiches many times I've been there 3 times so far and plan to go again They only take cash , so bring cash :-)

Lisa M.

Yelp
Today was my first time trying Ernie's and it did not disappoint!! The lady making my sandwich was very kind, and she makes one heck of a sandwich!! I got Turkey, salami, a bunch of veggies and the special spice mixture.... The spice was phenomenal!!! Not spicy - just so flavorful. They also have tons of chips and drinks inside to pair with your sandwich. Outside there are about 6 picnic tables to eat it! They were all super clean. Overall a great place to enjoy a lunch. I can't wait to come back!

Jody K.

Yelp
A friend mentioned Ernie's the other day, and it's been on my mind, so I decided to go there after work today. I saw that they've updated the area and put in several tables with umbrellas in the yard. That was a nice touch. But that's where the upgrades end. As I mentioned in my previous review, Ernie is no longer there. Prices have gone up AGAIN, and the sandwiches have gotten markedly smaller. There is a $1 upcharge for corned beef, pastrami and chicken. All of the sides are apparently $5, and there's not very much in the small containers. The women making the sandwiches seemed grumpy, and there are what I consider rude signs all over the place. One even said something to the effect of "Only dummies go up to the counter and hand the cashier a card. THIS IS CASH ONLY!" I ordered a turkey and corned beef sandwich with lettuce, cucumber and onion on rye. They never told me what kind of cheese they had. And they put so much "love spice" (which seemed to be mostly seasoned salt) on the sandwich that I couldn't finish it -- and not because it was big, because it wasn't. That 2 meat sandwich was $9. Sadly, I think the era of the charm of Ernie's has passed. I see no need to return.

Natalie L.

Yelp
I didn't expect more than a great sandwich, but Ernie immediately introduced himself. A warm welcome, quality ingredients and a unique shop. We don't have Faygo soda in Texas and my son wishes he could try all the flavors. The raspberry crumble bar, by the cash register, was also fabulous. So glad I had cash on me since they don't accept credit. Worth the trip!

Audrey E.

Yelp
Great spot! The sandwiches are fantastic and the workers are super nice and fast. I got the Ernie's Bird with everything on it on rye. It was packed, fresh, a bit spicy, and delicious. There is a good amount of outdoor seating as well. Would definitely come back, and recommend this spot to anyone in the area or even visiting Detroit.

Mike G.

Yelp
Had the luxury of trying them for the first time and is amazing the staff was awesome and was lucky enough to catch Earnie there and brought the whole experience full circle!!! Friendly and bright energy, my new favorite sandwich place in mi hogan hands down

Fast Eddie W.

Yelp
This place has the best cold cut sandwiches and they are h-u-g-e-!-! Your choice of cheese, meat and toppings. GO THERE!!

John W.

Yelp
this is a great neighborhood sandwich shop that has achieved, at least in my eyes, iconic status. It's a little hard to find, but worth the trip. The tremendously - sized sandwiches are freshly-made in front of you, and are incredireasonably priced for what you get.

Luree B.

Yelp
One of the best sandwich shops in Mi hands down. Cash only and they don't have an ATM so be ready for that. When it's nice out they have a nice outdoor patio if you want to eat. Gotta keep supporting now that Ernie in heaven.

Kimberley S.

Yelp
When your around the area, even if your not hungry, trust me when I say STOP HERE AND GET THE MONSTER! You'll thank me later! The flavor is amazing! And there is always a line! But trust me; it's worth the wait!!

Sharon F.

Yelp
Love Ernies best handmade sandwiches made in the city! Haven't been there in awhile maybe I I wiil go tomorrow

Ted F.

Yelp
I'm at a loss for words. I'm never at a loss for words. I'm Ted F*ckng Flask. I eat sandwiches and write sandwich reviews in my GD sleep. But, man, that goodness that Ernie has brought to the world has me speechless. My sandwich artisan / sherpa / soulmate was Jon. You can see what he did in the picture. He made me 9 sandwiches. I stood there while he did it. 9/9. None mailed in. He even put effort into a lettuce wrapped sandwich. EVEN LETTUCE. Here's a newsflash, you can eat the Monster. You can. Other tips: get cheese, don't be a lacnerd. And don't get your sandwich cut in half. That's called grown man style. Onion Roll. Tits. Meats. Tits. Love. Tits. Go Sic.

Luayy A.

Yelp
I've been to Ernie's market along time ago, but they're his sandwiches are banging. The service is absolutely gold mine, I like the old feeling the ambience of the old feeling of the old world really captures Ernie himself. I think the store that the deli the meats everything if you're looking for a really great sandwich and you're really hungry and you wanna spend some time in Oak Park then go here.

Brian C.

Yelp
Fantastic deli food, incredible service and beautiful day to sit at the tables outside. You definitively want to go hungry the sandwiches are huge. Ernie made his rounds twice ensuring all our needs where met. Incredible customer service, takes you back to the days of a local restaurant where everyone knows everyone and they are excited to invite new friends. Sorry no picture, it was eaten too fast. :)

Ned I.

Yelp
Ernie's has been a staple in Oak Park since 1955. Despite his age, Ernie still occasionally makes the sandwiches himself. The interior has a typical, small market look to it. It is a cash only establishment. There is outdoor seating if you prefer to eat on site. The sandwiches have a home made feel to it. There are 4 bread/bun options, 2 kinds of cheese, and 7 different meats. Upon your first time, it is "tradition" to not have your sandwich cut in half. The "monster" was the obvious choice for me, as it includes both cheeses and all 7 meats. The old school vibe and the sandwiches make Ernie's a must for any locals who have never been.

Doug R.

Yelp
Ernie is an institution! I love his schtik and the market - the only place that I can reliably find Better Made's Rainbow chips and pastrami. I also love taking my immigrant friends to visit Ernie for a completely different experience than they anticipate.

Jillian D.

Yelp
Such a fun spot hidden in the neighborhoods of Oak Park! The shop is small and full of Detroit favorites like Faygo, Better Made, and other local goodies! Tucked in the back is the sandwich counter. A very humble kitchen and friendly staff make for a fun ordering experience. The menu is completely customizable so be prepared to rattle off your perfect sandwich quickly and it better include the love spice - tasty and what makes the sandwich so unique. We really enjoyed our massive sandwiches however I'm not convinced it's the best sandwich shop in Metro Detroit. Although we enjoyed it, I don't think I'll find myself needing to return any time soon. Also this spot is cash only - we luckily knew from reading other Yelp reviews, but cash only in my opinion has no space in this era. I hope they level up and get the square app soon.

Nevin R.

Yelp
So happy I finally made the trip over to try this place. The sandwiches are just great. Expect to pay cash, as they can take a credit card they charge you $3 to swipe it. I will certainly return.

Sean K.

Yelp
Best all around and always constant. Gotta have the love. Always stop before we hit the Detroit zoo

Kaela K.

Yelp
While up north this weekend, our friend from Boston told us that Ernie's is the best sandwich place around. When you walk in, head straight to the back and order your sandwich. With it being our first time there, Laurie was super helpful and had a good sense of humor. I ended up getting the Monster on an impulse, while my sister got the Italian. Not only was the staff incredibly friendly, the food was amazing. The bread, meat, cheese and veggies all were good quality. We both sat in complete silence while we were eating. We also ordered the pasta salad and potato salad, which were both very good and a great price. I would definitely recommend this place for any sandwich lovers looking for a traditional style sandwich!

David W.

Yelp
This is one of those sandwiches you save up tummy space for - and it's worth it. Never go to Subway again. Forget it exists. Come to Ernie's. On my last trip, I feel like everyone in line was in the same club. Great conversation. Oldies and newbies. All with a common love. Also, staff seems to enjoy their jobs. That matters.

Matt L.

Yelp
Ernie himself makes this place a 10/10 but the subs...puts it over the top. These are the best subs Michigan has to offer - nothing fancy about them but oh so good. I live on the west side of the state but I make sure to stop by to get 2 subs every time I'm around Detroit. Ernie treats everyone like they are long time friends. One of the nicest, sweetest men you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Must try whenever you're in the area!! Yeah baby!

Michelle C.

Yelp
My husband LOVES Ernie's! It's fast and very yummy. The sandwich will last 2 days. They are huge

Janice R.

Yelp
It's a little neighborhood market. It reminds me of younger days. It's nothing fancy that's for sure. I like sitting out at the picnic table. Weather permitting. The sandwiches are delicious to say the least.

James A.

Yelp
This is always my lunch stop before heading home from long 12 hours behind the wheel. Always delicious. Always great service. Always worth the stop

Lynn W.

Yelp
Who loves ya baby! Ernie is such a joy. Made me get the big sandwich on my first visit. Glad I did. It was so good.

Robin M.

Yelp
We love Ernie's!!! He is the best and the sandwiches are fantastic been going there since the nineties

Roger I.

Yelp
After having a couple sandwiches from Ernie's, the Monster of course, I finally went in and ordered my own. A small market with lots of things to add to eat with your sandwich, if you have room in your stomach for it. My sandwich as usual, was delicious. I went full on, with everything they can put on it. I thought about getting a smaller sandwich for about two seconds, but The Monster is the way to go. You HAVE to do the Love spice, it's not an Ernie's creation without it. Go, enjoy the line, embrace the love from the sandwich artists and tip heavy! Just be prepared for a food nap after!

Taylor N.

Yelp
We moved to oak park in 2020 and we're looking for something for lunch, when i saw the pictures online of their sandwiches i knew we had to try! In the summer they are ALWAYS busy!! There is always a line out the door so try to go before or after the lunch rush or you can call in your order. It's a small building that is cash only! Every employee is sooo friendly especially the owner Ernie. He's the sweetest old man! I get the same order every time and it's amazing every time. You have to get the love spice! I enter bought a bottle of it hoping to recreate the sandwich at home but it just doesn't taste the same! It's the best sandwich I've ever had and soo filling for only $7!

Alfred H.

Yelp
So this is a little Gem the sandwich is huge I had the monster and was nit allowed to have my sandwich sliced in half because it was my first time here The owner loves everyone and it shows

Shawna M.

Yelp
My husband started bringing home these massive sandwiches a few years ago. He would say "I stopped at Ernie's and grabbed you a little lunch. " That little lunch made 4 meals lol Seriously good food for a great price. Good portions and extremely tasty.

Karol C.

Yelp
I had no idea that I've never posted a review of Ernie's! What kind of Yelper am I ??? Who doesn't love Ernie? I mean, really? He is funny, kind and amazing BABY! I love the remodel of the building grounds. I hadn't been there in years, the place looks great. The line is still out the door, but even more so since we're social distancing. The markings on the floor include hearts (of course). Ernie cranks those tasty sandwiches out though, so the wait isn't too long. Fun times ordering and watching Ernie make his magic as per usual. Visiting his little shop is certainly a welcoming pick-me-up. I ordered two sandwiches, both with love spice, of course. Everything was fresh and delicious. I hardly pay attention to prices, but, I paid $20 for two double sandwiches a large bag of chips and a soda. This is a cash only establishment, don't forget and wait in line, only to reach the door and see the sign. The shop has all varieties of chips and such, different beverages and even "Ernie's gear" for sale. The sandwiches are made with basic ingredients, but the taste is far from basic. So think of fresh deli meats, ham, pastrami, turkey, etc.; the two cheese choices change daily; white, rye, wheat and onion roll; mayo & mustard; veggie toppings and love spice.... I think that about covers your choices. Stop by Ernie's and get yourself a little lovin. I know I will visit more often.

Spencer T.

Yelp
Five star service ***** The sandwiches they make here are beyond description. You'll be more than happy that you made it. They are way above the franchise places and you will be back for more.

Deanna D.

Yelp
This place is incredible! My friends highly recommended that I try the sandwiches and I'm glad I finally made the trip there. Ernie came out and told us various stories and he is just awesome. I still wonder what is in his love spice but he makes it behind closed door so no one can copy it. I chose the corned beef and pastrami with all the vegetables. I like the chips selection too. They do serve a few sides like pasta salad, mustard potato salad and macaroni salad as well. Try Ernies out ... you won't be disappointed baby.

Clifton M.

Yelp
The menu has changed from the last time I had been there. There is the Bird Monster sandwich. The Monster sandwich (No pork). The Baby Monster for around ten dollars. Ernie is not there anymore. He spends time at home with his wife now.

Nichole P.

Yelp
just wanted to come on here and give my condolences to Miss Ernie. 5 stars every time i come here, hopefully you all know Ernie had to step away temporarily to help his wife. i hope that if there was any hiccups, that you all gave him a pass in his absence. Yeah Baby !!!!

Antoinette C.

Yelp
Ernie's the best! His sandwiches are like no other. Bonus: if Ernie is there, it's like visiting an old friend!

Goyard S.

Yelp
on Monday I entered Ernie's market full of joy first time I've ever made it into the market might I add. line was to the door so I had high expectations for the food and the costumer service! fast forward me and my girlfriend make it to the counter to order our sandwiches when we were met by the most disgusting worker I have ever met the worker constantly complained to her coworker about how she hated making sandwiches like the one my girl ordered. I honestly would not be making this review if she carried her self with my respect for the staple she works at within that market and trust that everybody there aren't regulars and everybody isnt okay with you blatantly disrespecting them and they're partner when they're spending they're hard owned money

Terry M.

Yelp
Amazing deli sandwiches, I got the baby monster with seven meats and all the vegetables. Everyone was super friendly and great food.

Chris G.

Yelp
Ernie has been there since the turn of the century and it's the best little store in the whole world I used to stop there going to high school now I'm 60

Robert W.

Yelp
good service ! cash only is not good this place needs to upgrade to credit card acceptable

Ann W.

Yelp
I was in Oak Park for a morning work event and was starving by the time lunch rolled around. Since Ernie's has been near the top of my list for lunch spots, I was eager to head out for a stack of meat. Oops! I meant sandwich. The deli was nearby and had convenient parking outside, as well as, a small private lot. Similar to other delis, the shelves inside were lined with snacks (mostly potato chips and popcorn). The refrigerated cases towards the back held containers of coleslaw and potato salads. But I digress. The sandwiches are what attract customers and what keeps them coming back. I ordered the Ernie's Monster which featured inches of deli meats and cheeses, along with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and more. I asked for everything except for jalapenos and banana peppers. The sandwich, on a soft onion roll, was fantastic and certainly explains the Yelp love for this market. Incidentally, it is also large enough for two meals. Right before noon, there were only a few people in line, which moved fairly quickly. I was impressed since the staff was slicing the meat to order. During the summer months, the small outdoor patio seating is attractive, but work called so I was quickly on my way home to finish up some projects. Service was beyond friendly. The gracious staff engaged everyone in conversation and sought to connect with each and every one of us.

Alex G.

Yelp
Ernie's is awesome. The staff is always friendly, and the sandwiches could not be better! They've been a constant in the community and I hope they last forever. I recommend them to everyone I know.
