On the Grid : Eros Cinema

"This Art Deco style cinema opened in 1938, and has been a part of Bombay’s iconic heritage since. It stands tall right opposite Churchgate Station as lakhs of citizens pass by and some stop to take a photograph. Made with Agra red stone and with the exterior painted cream, Eros cinema gives a soothing touch to the general chaos you find in the city. After you get past the sea of people, watch a movie here to get transported back to Bombay of the 1920s." - Please See

100 Years of Art Deco: The World’s Greatest Art Deco Buildings

On Marine Drive in Mumbai, the monumental Eros Cinema, commissioned in 1935 by businessman Shiavax Cawasji Cambata and designed by architect Shorabji Bhedwar, pairs a stepped façade of smooth ivory walls with the rich earthy brown of red Agra sandstone, while inside an opulent foyer features a boldly patterned black and white marble floor and a mix of Classical and Indian friezes, embodying a deco style that flourished in India and incorporated indigenous motifs. - Dominic Lutyens

Watched a movie at Eros INOX and had a great experience overall. The screen quality is excellent with sharp visuals, and the sound system is immersive, making the movie truly engaging. Seating is comfortable with good legroom, so even long movies feel relaxed. The theatre is clean, well maintained, and the staff is organized, which makes entry and exit smooth. Definitely one of the better places in the city to enjoy a movie.

Very friendly and polite staff, even on busy holidays like Christmas. Laser 3-D IMAX is an excellent experience. The sound quality is top notch. The theater is always clean and neat and in great condition. The leather seats are soft and recline farther than I expected. The remodeling of this historic and iconic theater is really well done, inspite of there no longer being a balcony. The ticket prices are the same as any other PVR INOX as well so they are priced appropriately.

A Stunning Revival of a Mumbai Icon! I recently visited the newly revamped Eros Theatre at Churchgate, now under the PVR banner and featuring a grand IMAX screen. I must say, the experience was nothing short of spectacular. The restoration has beautifully retained the Art Deco charm of this iconic building, blending heritage with modern technology seamlessly. From the moment you enter, the space exudes elegance and nostalgia, yet feels fresh and world-class. The IMAX screen is massive and immersive, and the sound system is crystal clear, delivering every note and dialogue with incredible depth. Seats are comfortable, the ambience is premium, and the entire setup does justice to both classic cinema lovers and modern moviegoers. Kudos to PVR for respecting the legacy of Eros while transforming it into a state-of-the-art cinema destination. If you’re in Mumbai and love movies, this place is an absolute must-visit!

Eros Cinema, a landmark in Mumbai’s Churchgate area, first opened its doors in 1938, showcasing exquisite Art Deco architecture designed by Shorabji Bhedwar. After ceasing operations in 2017, this iconic theater underwent extensive renovations and reopened in February 2024 as Eros INOX IMAX, Mumbai’s first standalone IMAX with Laser theatre. The transformation seamlessly blends the original architectural charm with state-of-the-art cinematic technology, offering audiences an immersive viewing experience. The revamped cinema now features a 305-seat IMAX auditorium on the second floor, while preserving the historic facade and grand foyer, symbolizing a harmonious fusion of heritage and modernity.

Eros IMAX has a great ambience, comfortable seats, polite staff, and a rich cinematic history — truly one of Mumbai’s iconic venues. However, my recent visits were disappointing on the technical front. There was a scratch-like mark on the screen (visible during bright scenes) and frequent light leakage from the auditorium door, which disrupted the viewing experience. I’ve attached photos for reference. At a premium price for a premium format, these issues shouldn’t exist. Until they’re resolved, I’d recommend watching IMAX films at Miraj Wadala or PVR Phoenix Palladium for a better visual experience.

I watched One Problem After Another at IMAX Eros, Churchgate, and while the movie itself was good, the overall theatre experience was absolutely awesome. The IMAX screen quality and sound were stunning, and the seating was very comfortable. From start to finish, the visuals pulled me right into the story. Despite the title of the film, the visit had no real issues — only pure cinematic enjoyment. This is definitely one of the top places in Mumbai to watch a big-screen spectacle.

Google
Eros IMAX is decent overall but not the best IMAX experience. The screen and sound are okay, and the seating is fairly comfortable, but it doesn’t feel as immersive or well-maintained compared to newer IMAX theatres. Good for watching a movie if you’re nearby, but there’s definitely room for improvement in terms of picture quality and overall ambience.
