"This restaurant occupies an impressive Empordà-style farmhouse that dates back to the 16C. It features attractive grounds and rustic-style dining rooms which provide a backdrop for seasonal cuisine that takes full advantage of local products. The cosy guestrooms are an added bonus." - Michelin Inspector

It’s true… the building and rooms are very good but the service people need to learn more hospitality… the restaurant is very good, too. The building and rooms deserve five stars definitely, the service (depending on the person) 2-4 stars … some of them don’t seem to get the idea… some of them are good at what they do but need some tuitions still… yeah it’s hard to hear but there are good schools for this. The food is good and the “big living rooms” with coffee machine and magazines and couches are nice. Had two magic moments there. The reflection in the window and the moment with the dove. 🕊️ The pool is rather not worth it.

This was the worst experience we’ve ever had in a hotel/restaurant. My husbands’ parents were guests at the hotel. They arrived in Spain after two days of driving and we would -already in Catalunya - pick them up to go out to diner. We were a bit early, however. After arriving at the gated entrance of the hotel we were, after a weird talk over the intercom, let in. (My husband speaks Spanish fluently, so there was no language barrier.) We were just parking our car when we were - literally! - halted by the receptionist. He then forbade us to enter the hotel (“You are no guest here.”) When my husband explained that his parents were, we were told that it made no difference. We then asked whether there was a bar where we could wait 15 minutes, so that mum and dad - both seniors - wouldn’t need to rush. Again, a harsh no followed. (“Yes, we have a bar. But only for guests.”) He then marched off. In 30 years of coming to the Costa Brava - our second home - and after years of visiting and more than a decade of working in Michelin-starred restaurants and five star hotels, we have never encountered such an enormous lack of hospitality. This was shameful and a disgrace. Needless to say: we, and my parents in law, will never set a foot (again) in Es Portal.

Rice menu 55 euro Nice starters, rice (palella ) was delicious !! Apple desert amazing and I am not a fan of apple:) Location amazing ! Only issue is service, wrong attitude ,it takes time before they smile and antending time to long. People need to feel welcome if not people will not come back even if the food is good .

I stayed at Es Portal with my grandson to celebrate his 18th birthday. We were both delighted with everything about our stay. The room was perfect and a bottle of cava was waiting for us to enjoy. The gastronomic menu was second to none. My grandson was blown away with the range and quality of the dishes. Congratulations to the chef. The accompanying wines were also excellent. A hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs the following morning gave the final touch to a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.

Hotel was beautifully renovated with old stone walls and beamed vaulted ceilings and the rooms were varied but were let down by cheap mass produced furniture which was quite tatty and small things like the blinds in our room had broken cords, the waste bin had a broken lid and the shower was mouldy round the screen and the air conditioning did not work. Staff were pleasant but the whole hotel had a corporate feel rather than a personal one. The outside areas were very bland and the pool was in a fenced compound - not attractive. The food was amazing - a gastronomic experience. We had the set menu the first night which had three courses with two choices for each course - the cured tuna and minced beetroot was gorgeous and the beef was fantastic although huge. The tasting menu the second night had superb tastes and flavours and the glass restaurant was a lovely setting although would have been better looking out into an attractive garden area. The hotel is on a busy main road so it is probably noisy in the rooms on the frontage.

This is a beautiful boutique hotel with large, luxurious rooms. It is known mainly as a gastronomic hotel which is why it was included on our Flavours of Catalonia walking holiday. We arrived on a Sunday early in May and the hotel was pretty full. We had an amazing tasting menu with top- level service. On the Monday we were the only ones there and they managed to put on a sensational meal just for us. And that’s why we rate it five stars.

Well worth a visit, very relaxing, fantastic food and wonderful service. After really enjoying or meal previously we have returned 4 years later to stay at the hotel for 3 nights. So glad that we have, everything has been perfect, wonderful friendly staff excellent food and service, outdoor pool for residents only which has been perfect for a relaxing swim and chill time on the sun beds after a full day walking around the hills. Our room El Balcaret is exceptional, fantastic soundproofing so no traffic noise, spacious and beautifully designed and decorated. The hotel is Michelin starred, so expect wonderful meals all day including a fantastic breakfast. Would highly recommend well worth a visit to treat yourself.

My partner and I stayed for one night between Christmas and New Year on our way from Nice to Valencia and we loved our stay. The hotel is extremely charming, all made of stones and original fixtures. Our room was quite big and the bathroom had a bath, which was welcome after an entire day travelling. The hotel is very clean and quiet and the staff is also very friendly. The bedroom was quite dark and the bed was comfortable with very soft sheets. They even left some nibbles from their gourmet restaurant for us to enjoy as a free treat. Nice touch! All of that for only 125€ via Booking.com so cheap for a 4 star hotel really! We loved the location and ate at their restaurant so not sure how convenient it would be to reach another restaurant.
