The Best Places to Eat and Drink in the Upper Haight | Eater SF

"When you’ve had a few drinks and are desperately craving a hot slice of pizza, Escape from New York is the place to go. It’s open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, there’s a pizza with sliced and roasted potatoes and garlic over pesto, and that’s pretty much all you need to know about that." - Paolo Bicchieri

Group That Includes Haight Pizza Spot Hires Trump-Boosting Lawyer To Block Sleeping Space For Homeless Folks | Eater SF

"Located in the Haight, the original Escape From New York Pizza spot opened in 1986 by Paul Geffner and Joe Goldmark, and over the years I’ve seen it described as a longtime supporter of homelessness charities. Escape joined the Concerned Citizens of the Haight because its representatives said the proposed homeless camp was a health and safety issue at that location, but the chain’s spokesperson emphasized that Escape had no input in hiring the group's lawyer, does not agree with Harmeet Dhillon’s politics, and was surprised by the choice; she also clarified that Joe Goldmark left the business more than two decades ago. The mini-chain now has six locations, and I note they’re offering buffalo hot wings, new pizza flavors at all six locations, and gift cards in any denomination." - Eve Batey

Heartwarming Ways Restaurants Are Giving Back to the Community | Eater SF

"I learned that Escape From New York Pizza in the Haight accepts daily donations and sends out that many pies the next day to feed essential workers, estimating they served about 3,500 hospital workers in the first month and as many as 600 people in a single day." - Becky Duffett

"All three locations of Escape from New York (1737 Haight Street, 333 Bush Street downtown, and 715 Harrison Street in SoMa) offer (for an extra $4) a gluten-free crust for any 14-inch pie. While delivery’s available at all its restaurants, Escape’s Haight spot (which has been open since 1986) has such a fantastic collection of rock memorabilia on display that a pick-up is worth the trip." - Eve Batey

Google
Wow, I loved this escape! The pizza are really original and delicious. What I even enjoyed more is the great vibe and amazingly nice staff. Great place to go for fantastic slices of pizza!

Derrick L.

Google
Amazing specialty fig bacon and ricotta pizza, perfect sweetness balance. Potato garlic was fun but couldn’t compare, it had good appeal but not as flavorful. The garlic could’ve been punchier, maybe a sharper cheese too. Nice interior gritty vibe

Sydney T.

Google
Delicious pizza! We got a personal size and it was a great size for two to share as a late night snack. We went after the Valkyries game! The man working was very friendly.

Hi SF community who goes to this location There is a recisit guy who is making a pizza He should not work there. Please avoid him and don’t show him respect because he doest deseres it. The employee I dealt with was rude, unprofessional, and completely disrespectful. Instead of greeting customers or showing any effort, they acted annoyed, rolled their eyes, and spoke with an attitude like they were being forced to work against their will. Basic customer service clearly doesn’t exist here. If this is the type of person representing your business, no wonder people don’t want to come back.

Google
Perfect spot in a cool location. The pizza is really good, but a bit expensive, also the service... service?, right... what "service", there's no service. Eventhough, it is a nice place for a classic NY pepperoni pizza. (by the way: "Escape from NY" is a mandatory stop right after a records dig into Amoeba Records)

Google
As a New Yorker from Hunts point who fell in love with a Cali girl, this place didn't disappoint. Everything felt authentic from the parlor seats, parmesan and chili flake shakers to the large slices sold by the slice (verry reasonably priced btw). We ordered our slices (cheese and pepperoni) and we were served promptly. Our pizza slices were amazing. The only negative I have is that they didn't have my size on the hoodie I wanted. Highly recommended I will come back for more!

Dan S.

Google
Called this morning to order a bunch of pizzas for a birthday party. The staff were super helpful and made sure I didn’t over order. Talking me down from 15 pizzas to 8. Everyone enjoyed the pizza. Appreciate the honest and helpful service. Will be back.

T V.

Google
As a born and raised New Yorker, I can say that this pizza was okay freaking great for CA pizza, but just okay to me by NY standards. Plus, brown-skinned dude with the out the box curls needed to chill with all the attitude just because my family asked for a to go box for our large pizza and plates so we could eat a few slices there. Average pizza spot though, but props for being able to buy individual slices, even if they are wildly overpriced!
google avatar

Deshawn C.

Yelp
Yes really good food we should have more specials and different kind of wings on the menu like lemon pepper or sweet garlic
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing pizzas! Opens late on the weekends. We were desperate for some comfort food and their pizzas gave us what we needed. Their pepperoni pizza might be top three best I have had. The dough is crispy while the flavor is amazing! Their potato pizza with garlic is something new and didn't disappoint. The store has a cool lil vibe as well.
google avatar

Alcides F.

Yelp
I gotta give them 5 stars because the pizza was good and they were playing Mac Dre. I also like the art!
google avatar

S M.

Yelp
When visiting Haight district this is a must stop! They sell pizza by the slice. They support local artists. The potato pesto pizza is uniquely delicious and filling. A true comfort food that I've never been able to recreate in my own kitchen.
google avatar

Joiliana L.

Yelp
So glad I picked this place to order from! Woke up and was craving pizza. I like that you're able to customize your order. I got the pepperoni pizza and added mushrooms and basil to the left, pesto drizzle to the right. The pesto was good but it was more splotchy than a drizzle. Overall though, very solid NY style pizza. All the base ingredients were tasty: the crust, sauce, and cheese. They didn't skimp on the toppings but also didn't overdo it. I would definitely order from here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Potato pizza! That is all. You're welcome Seriously though, I remember the first time I had it, my girlfriend brought it over and I'm a meat loving carnivore; potato pizza?!?! Well, this pesto based, vegetarian delight introduced diced me to a whole new spectrum of flavors. Mind is blown. Whole roasted garlic, thinly sliced potatoes and all the secret ingredients... glass of Chardonnay... you get it.

Yelp
Small, casual spot with a few tables and a standing bench where you can post up with your slice. The walls are filled with autographs and memorabilia from famous visitors over the years, which gives the place a lot of old-school charm and personality. It is definitely the kind of spot where you can feel a bit of history just hanging out inside. Came in strictly to see how they do slices, so I went for a classic cheese. The signage outside was eye-catching and pulled me in, and honestly, a hot slice always sounds good. The slice had a nice char on the bottom, and everything stayed in place the way a proper thin slice should -- no sliding toppings or soggy mess. The dough had good flavor and texture, and it was fun seeing the staff stretch and toss the dough in the air behind the counter, giving it that legit New York pizzeria vibe. The cheese coverage was on the lighter side and definitely could have used a lot more to really hit that classic NY slice richness. Price felt a bit steep at around six dollars with tax for just one slice, but it makes sense given the area and overall vibe of the neighborhood. Would recommend stopping by if you are in the area and want a quick, lighter slice while checking out some cool memorabilia. A good spot to pop into when you are craving something simple and a little nostalgic without committing to a full, heavy pizza.

Yelp
Someone at O'Reilly raved about this pizza spot so we went and it ended up being pretty damn good. Supposed to be new york style pizza (one of many in the area). Note to anyone looking for it, there's no bathrooms in there. It's a pretty small shop with just a couple of tables. There's limited flavours and toppings but they got the crust right The potato pizza was pretty good. I appreciated that it wasn't overly greasy like a lot of other late night pizza places. The roasted garlic was a godsend-it added so much flavour to the otherwise pretty bland pizza. It wasn't red sauce based. There was some green pesto like oil on top for extra flavour. The potato pieces were sorta on the thicker side but they were cooked to perfection, not too mouth drying.

Yelp
Being from Jersey, I'm always on the search for some good pizza that reminds me of home. I was walking by this place and the aroma reminded me of east coast pizza so I had to go in. Walking in you would see it's a nice sized pizzeria that has a small bar area, with a decent beer and wine selection. My partner and I were greeted by a friendly guy, he told us about their specialty pizzas of the month and I was sold. I was going to just get a pepperoni slice but the "Lucia" specialty pizza just sounded too good and he was going to make a fresh batch so that made it more enticing! Pizza was indeed delicious, as a fan of both cubano sandwiches and pizza, chef executed it perfectly! Definitely will come back.

Yelp
Escape from New York Pizza is my favorite pizza joint in the bay when it comes to NY style pizza. Anytime I'm in the City and am mobbing near Haight I have to stop by and snag one or two pieces (one for now, one for later). Anytime I pop in I have to get the "You Say Potato", it's a veggie pizza with pesto, cheese, CHUNKS of WHOLE garlic and HUNKS of poe-tay-toes (boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.) But I am no vegetarian and I am happy to say their recipe hasn't changed in years. It's the same slice I've been getting for the last almost 20 years. Honestly I wouldn't change anything, I have nothing negative to say, but nothing but props on the service, freshness of ingredients, and originality of the overall establishment. In a constantly changing world it's nice to have places like this that you still can go to and share the experience with friends and family.
google avatar

Yelp
A decent option for New York style pizza in San Francisco! We got this to go, so it wasn't as fresh as it could be, but the texture still maintained very well. The ingredients all taste good, the thickness is appropriate, and there's a satisfying crunch to the pie. I think compared to a slice you get in New York there could be a little bit of improvement in the flavour of the sauce and the crust, but overall I'd be happy to get this again.
google avatar

Lexi L.

Yelp
Wow. A crispy and fresh slice of pizza from this spot was everythinggg! we had the potato and it was my first time having a slice with that as the main topping and it did not disappoint. Perfectly portioned over the pizza so every bite has either garlic, potato, and delicious pesto. 10/10, not to mention the cute decoration throughout and friendly staff
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
The food was great! The service was quick! Casual ambiance. Price was reasonable. Nice to sit and people watch.
google avatar

Rona B.

Yelp
Pizza was just okay. It's a very cute and small shop, but quick to heat up a slice. I tried the potato and pepperoni slices; both were good but not mind blowing and the pepperoni tasted like your regular cafeteria type with good crust.
google avatar

Sujay R.

Yelp
Somehow this slice costs way more than a New York City slice of pizza. Their crust did not remind me of nyc thin crust unfortunately
google avatar

Ezra L.

Yelp
Came here with my mom, step-dad, and little sister. We ordered three slices of pizza, and the cashier gave us two extra slices on the house. On top of this he fully filled out our punch card. Valid for one free slice. The pizza was as advertised, but and tasty. One of the last places in SF where you can cheap and tasty slice.
google avatar

C S.

Yelp
Quick service, the food was very yummy, the vibe was there:) it's affordable and you can either do slices or a whole pie.
google avatar

Wayne K.

Yelp
Delicious pizza, great vibe and love everything about this place. People are warm and friendly. One comment though, the potato on the pizza was a little heavy.
google avatar

Yelp
On my last night in San Francisco, I was exhausted and wanted to treat myself to one of my guilty pleasures: eating takeout in a hotel bed. I know, it sounds silly but try it and tell me you don't feel like the epitome of luxury. A few limitations, however. It was getting late and I'm also gluten free. Luckily, Escape from New York Pizza was still delivering and had gluten free crust. I quickly ordered a 14 inch GF pepperoni pizza which came out to about $30 before all the taxes, fees, service charges, etc. It was delivered on time and still hot. It was delicious! The crust was thin, the sauce was fairly sweet, and I had no trouble almost finishing the entire thing by myself. I definitely recommend this spot for late night food, especially if you're craving pizza sans gluten.
google avatar

Katja K.

Yelp
I've always loved this pizza joint, but it recently got a real stamp of approval from my New Yorker friend, who said it might be the best slice in the Bay Area, especially considering the price for SF. I highly recommend the potato pizza with chunks of garlic, but be sure to ask about their slice of the day. Whether you take a friend or go solo, you're in for a slice of heaven.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
There are a couple slices houses along Haight, but this one is my favorite. I dream about their potato garlic pizza. It's also the perfect snack when you've done the circuit of shops along Haight St. It's a generous slice for about $6-8. Not a meal, but the best snack this side of Haight. Classic NY style flat pizza. Their pepperoni and mushroom slices are also excellent. Service is fast and efficient and the staff are always friendly. Shop is clean, with some great memorabilia on the walls, especially a sweet note from some kids who used to go to EFNY as students, who are now grown (keep an eye out for it)! Note that they do charge for to-go boxes, so I personally always prepare to eat it there. It's best enjoyed hot anyway!
google avatar

Tracy B.

Yelp
I was craving some pizza and came across this place while exploring ashbury Haight area. I got the pesto slice and it was very good. Thin crispy crust. It was a true NY pizza. My husband got a loaded one. He really enjoyed it too. I will definitely come back again.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
One of the first things you'll notice about this place is that the pizza slices are freakin huge ! Because of that though, I think I remember them costing about $6-$7 a slice, which I still think is kind of a lot because you can get a giant slice of pizza from Costco for like a 1/3 of that price. In any case, they did have unique toppings that you don't really see much anywhere else. There also is not much indoor or outdoor seating and the decoration is somewhat grunge-y. Service was okay, just people trying to do their job. However, even with little seating, they are somewhat close to Golden Gate Park. You could get some slices to go and then picnic in the park or something. I don't think I personally would come back to the city for this as I no longer live in SF, but if my husband and I were passing through and he were craving pizza, I would totally try to stop by this place again !
google avatar

Taelor P.

Yelp
I love a NY pizza spot and i'm glad we stumbled on this one walking around Haight-Ashbury. The prices are very reasonable and the slices are soooooo good! I love the fun, artsy decor inside and the service was great as well!
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Good pizza, actually tastes like it escaped from N.Y. The service was, well, New Yorkish (fine by me) and the ambiance was as well. The Bone Thugs N Harmony album playing through the speakers was a highlight for me. Would recommend
google avatar

Walt P.

Yelp
For buying a slice this place is good. I love rhe mushroom slice as it was loaded with mushrooms and the crust was crispy. Definitely a quality slice. I thought the price were on the high side 12 dollars for a slice and a soda. They also charge extra for a box

Andrew S.

Yelp
$43.00 for a medium pizza including tip. I picked it up. Relatively thin crust. Tasty ingredients. Kind of expensive for not all that much pizza. I have definitely had worse, particularly at 1:30 AM.

Rilee S.

Yelp
Overheard the staff very loudly making fun of an unhoused man who paid for a pizza slice. Absolutely DISGUSTING behavior. Especially when the pizza is mediocre at best and you're charging $6.50 for it. You can tell a lot about a person and a company based on how they treat those who are less fortunate than them. Will never go back here again.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
We were new visiting the area and were very hungry on a late weekday night. We were craving something good but were limited by the few almost non existent number of options of restaurants still open after 9 PM. We came across this place and decided to give it a go with their delivery. I was surprised to see that they offered their own in-house delivery in addition to the third party options. Not only did the pizza arrive really fresh and hot but their delivery service was the good old nostalgic old school pizza delivery which I highly recommend as I feel like they take care of the food while in transit a lot better. We ordered a large pepperoni and we were shook by how big a large pizza really is we have never been to New York, but they really live up to their name for what we imagine is the iconic grab and fold slice of pizza between two very very hungry people we were able to demolish almost all but four of the slices of pizza. The leftovers were just amazing the next day for breakfast. The crust was so crisp and chewy on the inside and saucy and cheesy. It was the perfect meal for late night. Highly recommend on giving this neighborhood pizzeria a try!
google avatar

Adrian L.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood while my fur baby was having a spa day and was looking for a quick bite. Escape From NY Pizza had some nice Yelp reviews and I had check out a slice of the gourmet veggie. The pizza was delicious and the crust was perfect...not too crunchy and not too chewy. It was about $7 and well worth it. As I was enjoying my slice, I admired all the autographed photos and cool posters. I look forward to returning:)
google avatar

Carlos G.

Yelp
Not sure if it was a off day but this pizza was regular...I did like that it was thin and stayed firm when holding...good crust. But for me wasn't anything special...the space was clean and staff seemed to be friendly...

Donovan K.

Yelp
As an SF native, always been one of my favorites!!!!!!! Locally owned and always have given back to the community!!!
google avatar

Gabe P.

Yelp
I have no trouble believing Escape from New York pizza actually escaped from New York. But in the process of their escape they lost some key components. So by the time it gets to you it's lost some of its spunk unfortunately. They have plenty of these franchises. I know I was quite fond of one of the locations back home in Portland, OR. It seems clear to me that the quality will vary by location. But honestly the pizza is still good at this location. I would say give any of them a chance if you want a solid slice. They have a good process. A New York style slice is classic and can really hit the spot. Give it a try but results may vary. (3.8 Stars)
google avatar

Dorothy Z.

Yelp
Stopped by here with a friend after biking around Golden Gate Park. This is probably one of the best pizza places I've been to! The pesto flavor was great and the crust was crunchy, thin, and the cheese was sooo melty. Not the cheapest spot, but the vibes and service were on point!

Katie B.

Yelp
Pizza was pretty good, you have to eat it warm, not good when it cold,,,they are a little rude in there I guess they take the new yoke attitude literally
google avatar

Joan W.

Yelp
Good solid pizza. There have been many changes on Haight Street throughout the years but this place has been here throughout it all. They had potato pizza way before diverse vegetables on pizza was a thing. I like its rock and roll and gritty vibe. They always seem to blast 90s or 00s music. Seating can be limited so it's best to take to nearby Golden Gate Park.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I have been going to Escape From New York Pizza since late 1999/early 2000's. It has served as one of our go-to eateries on Haight and is now a required stop for my kids if/when in the area. PROS: Their pizzas are New York style thin crust, my favourite! They offer some unique and interesting pizzas like MISS FIGGY (Olive oil and garlic base, arugula, applewood smoked bacon, figs, mozzarella, topped with goat cheese and balsamic reduction) and others. You can also DESIGN YOUR OWN pie. Ordering is quick and easy. A great place for a quick bite. Friendly staff. CONS: No parking lot. Menu for SLICES is limited to seven types; CHEESE, PESTO, PEPPERONI, MUSHROOM, SLICE OF DAY, U SAY POTATO, GOURMET VEGGIE. Cleanliness can be improved; dining tables and/or counter can be wiped down more regularly, trash receptacles tend to be overfilled... Below are my family's favourites: Mami: Pepperoni - I'm a traditional girl and love this classic. Papa: U SAY POTATO - This is Escape From New York's classic. Roasted potato slices and garlic cloves with mozzarella, over pesto sauce. Z: BUFFALO RANCH - Wing sauce base, roasted chicken, green onions, mozzarella, ranch drizzle. V: NYPC (with no tomatoes) - Pesto sauce, roasted chicken, tomatoes, mozzarella, topped with parmesan cheese. We will continue to return. I don't eat pizza in San Francisco anywhere else.
google avatar

Bisrat A.

Yelp
Good $5 slices cause they're huge. I don't personally think it's the best value pizza in the city as it is expensive.

Chris B.

Yelp
It was very good and I would get it again. But it is funny being from the east coast; I do believe it's true what they say... the water is just different back there. East coast just has that chew that you can't beat. But the pizza was one the best West coast pizza I've had.
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday around 5:30 pm and there was no line! But it quickly formed about half an hour later. The pizza is New York-style, huge slices, thin and crispy crust. Pretty solid flavors with an amazing crunch every bite. The vodka one was my favorite as it was tastier than the others. They were light on the cheese topping for the cheese and pepperoni so it brought out a more tomato taste. They have special pies for order only where they partner with other local spots is cute! The service is pretty quick once you order. They heat the slices for you and package it with paper plates and a brown branded bag if you ordered to-go. The seating outside is quite pleasant at this time (early fall) since they're located in the middle of a neighborhood. Would order a whole pie next time to share with friends!
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
Delicious pizza, walked in for a bite after walking around Golden Gate Park and it hit the spot. Crust was perfect and wasn't greasy. The pesto with potato and garlic was so memorable and the cheese was classic.
google avatar

Allie G.

Yelp
We visited Escape From New York Pizza at around midnight on a Friday after seeing a band play nearby. The place was relatively busy but we were able to order at the counter right away. I chose a Mushroom Slice, and my friends got the Veggie, Hawaiian, Cheese, and Pepperoni (all slices). First off, most of us are from New York so we were skeptical from the start. The service was quick and the place looked pretty authentic - with a huge NYC subway map as decor and the overall vibe of an New York dollar slice store. However, the slices were far from a dollar - $5.50 to $6.50, which I found to be wild. And then of course, the POS system prompts you to add a tip. The slices came out pretty fast and we ate them on the spot (there were a few tables inside). I had to request red pepper flakes and parmesan because they didn't have those out, and they came in little packets - definitely not very New York. But the crust of the slices was sufficiently thin and crispy, which I appreciated. There was a bit too much flour on the bottom, but the toppings were all pretty good. Overall, decent for New York pizza in SF!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
It was very inviting from the outside but when we arrived we were given dirty looks by the man serving us threw our slices in the oven to reheat as if they were garbage and then gave the worst looks to us the whole time so hurtful as we frequent the area quite a bit this was our first and last time that we will be back to the owner your employee that was providing customer service was the worst I've ever received in my life
google avatar

Shalynn I.

Yelp
This pizza place is one of the best! A little pricey but you get amazing quality and quantity! They were really fast for such a busy weekend! We went to outside lands and so lots of people getting pizza after the festival! Thanks again!

Nick M.

Yelp
Awesome pizza as it always has been. The All American, with its combo of bacon and tomato is amazing. Either way get ready for a spiritual experience because all of their offerings are otherworldly.
google avatar

Karina R.

Yelp
Came with a friend who was craving this place and I left a little satisfied but not impressed with the name and expectation of "New York Pizza". 3.5 stars for me. Slices are big, definitely can get full off of 1.5. We got pepperoni, veggie and a ham and pineapple. Between the pepperoni and the pineapple and ham one, the pepperoni was far better but not like those of NY (cheesy, greasy, thin crust). Because they're reheated in the oven upon order, some parts were hot others were cold, my ham and pineapple one was just cold from the very first bite. For 4 slices of pizza and 2 small drinks + tip, I paid almost $40 when that's the price of ordering an entire pie from the comfort of your own home. About 4 small tables offered for seating, one long standing bar offered too. Quite the foot traffic on a Sunday evening but the service is fast. I could see this being the place to stop at after a few drinks in the Haight-Ashbury area, but not sure I would say the same if you're looking to satisfy a full pizza craving.
google avatar

Ziyan C.

Yelp
We got a Miss Figgy and another meat pizza to go on a Saturday afternoon. The Miss Figgy had unique flavors with the sweet fig, acidic balsamic, and savory cheese. The crust was on the fluffy side, not my personal preference but still fine. 3.5 stars.

Erin R.

Yelp
This place has amazing slices at an inexpensive price point! I usually get the veggie delight slice and i would highly recommend!

Yelp
Stopped by after a night of fun. Street parking was open around 1:30am. There was a group inside just hanging at a table. They had a variety of pizza ready and they were able to heat it in the oven. We ordered one slice of each, cheese, pepperoni, chicken bacon and pesto. It was good after a night drinking and conveniently located not too far from where we were. Employees were nice and we didn't wait long to get the pizza to go. It was an ok slice of pizza. Nothing fabulous. I do appreciate that it's open late so you can definitely have a midnight snack!
