Escocesa Review - Stoke Newington - London - The Infatuation

"Escocesa is a neighbourhood tapas spot in Stoke Newington, where all the seafood is sourced from Scotland. This means juicy Orkney scallops, octopus with white bean purée and capers, and grilled Shetland mussels. Vibe-wise it's a popular date spot and, if that’s what you’re after, you’ll want a spot at the bar. It’s moodily lit, classy but casual, and there’s a view of the action—perfect to enjoy a few plates and a couple of glasses." - Jake Missing

One of the best tapas restaurants I have ever been to in London! We managed to make a last-minute same-day reservation on a Saturday evening at 7 and the food absolutely didn't disappoint. Upon arrival at the restaurant I immediately had a good feeling about the food quality because we got to sit at the kitchen counter seeing how they prepare everything in front of our eyes and all the tapas looked absolutely amazing. We went with the plain tortilla, seabass ceviche, fried chick peas, braised beef cheek in apple sauce and roast lamb cutlet with hummus. Tortilla was creamy and savoury, ceviche was super fresh and sauce was so refreshing with the grapes it's definitely a good way to prepare your palette for something even more flavourful. The fried chickpeas were such a pleasant surprise with its savoury taste from the batter and it went nicely as a side with the beef in apple sauce to enhance that flavour profile. The beef was super tender and melted in your mouth and the apple sauce had a pleasant flavour to it. The lamb was a little chewy for me personally but together with the hummus it was great. Service was amazing with friendly waiters and chefs serving throughout our time there. I was really satisfied by the experience and would definitely come back soon.

Second time I've been and it didn't quite live up to the first's standards. Only 2 of us and we only ordered 2 drinks, they brought of 1 (don't know why this wasn't a flag). And later they quite obviously forgot one of our dishes when they asked if we were finished. The rest of it was great though!

I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this cosy, little neighborhood restaurant. They are one of the few places in London to actually dish up a classic Valencian paella with rabbit, chicken and broad beans. The portion size is very generous, and we had enough leftover for a hearty breakfast the next day. Other than that, we enjoyed the gambas al ajilio and the ham croquettes. It's recommended to book ahead for the weekend because the back room gets pretty packed.

Not our first time here and not disappointed Oyster were fresh, the bread with alioli is so good! We had the octopus really tasty same as the tortilla (they know how to do it!) creamy and fresh! Service was good, we didn’t know they have table outside so we sat there to enjoy the sun. Good time we will be back

What a gem of a restaurant. Some of the best Spanish tapas we've ever had in London. Every dish was well-balanced and moreish. The pluma iberica with babaganoush was a particular triumph. The bed of babaganoush was slightly acidic and well salted with hints of garlic and nutty tahini, the sweet sauce on the side, the fatty delicious grilled pluma - such a delightful and surprising combination. Service was very good as well. The servers were very knowledgeable about the dishes and took food allergies seriously. Dirty plates were cleared promptly, food served promptly and in the right order. We will be returning again and again.

The food was delicious, and the service was warm and friendly. However, I’m only giving it 4 stars because, as a group of five, we ordered a variety of small plates, and they all arrived at once. It was too much to get through quickly, and most of the dishes cooled down before we could enjoy them. According to good hospitality standards, it's better to stagger the dishes for a more relaxed and enjoyable dining experience.

Absolutely delightful meal that was enjoyed on the counter top seating- fantastic selection of items but especially loved the garlic prawns and the stuffed courgette flower. Great and friendly service, sorted us out with space for a last minute dining companion and otherwise very attentive and knowledgeable!

Google
Perfect food and setting, and coming from a Spaniard is not too bad. Perhaps I would make the portions a bit bigger but the flavours were really good in every single dish we tried Im not sure I'll go again as I can have tapas when I go back to Spain however I would go again if I went without Spaniards

Yelp
I love this place a little gem if you make it as far up and Stokey then go! I am in love with the idea of the Scottish sourced Spanish tapas bar but also they put some lovely details into each dish! The boquerones are to die for and have a little toasted garlic on top providing exquisite texture to the dish! The wine a Manga del brujo suggested by the waitress was a beautiful garnet colour, not too expensive and complemented the meal perfectly! Also some interesting combinations such as a cured tuna with Caper-berries and lemon creme. And a veal dish which was indescribably delicious! My only regret is I didn't get a photo of each dish to post in the review but really I was too busy enjoying to think about something so mundane! Sorry Yelpers you will just have to see for yourself!

Yelp
This is my favourite restaurant in London. Make sure you sit at the bar in the kitchen so you can get the full experience watching the chefs make your food. Sunday is the best day, £1 oysters and seafood paella on the menu. The wine list is carefully crafted and I actually discovered my favourite wine that I now always order. Service is impeccable and their gin tonics are very much above average. 10/10!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place after my friend said it was on her list for like forever! We arrived and the setting was dark and lit by candles.. So far, so good, but the food was just average.. After a long debate I went for the tortilla and prawns. Hmm I so wanted to love it, as I'm a big fan of tapas, but the prawns were super average, and you could barely taste the garlic. The only positive was the portion was a good size, but for £8 it would have to be. The tortilla wasn't bad, more flavoursome than some places, but not a stand out dish really. My friend was more adventurous than me, ordering the aubergine coated in sugar and honey. We both agreed that it sounded a weird combination, but she decided to be brave and try it. Well, it was just that, weirdly ok. The fig and manchego salad looked great, but after more than a few bites, kinda lost its appeal. All in all.. This place was just ok! Wouldn't run to go back, but wouldn't avoid it either...

Yelp
Every dish we had was tasty and just the right amount - even though it's technically 'tapas' we still felt full after sharing three plates for Sunday brunch. Great decor, friendly staff, can't wait to come back again one evening and try out one of their specials!

Yelp
I went there for dinner without a reservation, our only option was to sit at the bar. Great experience! The personnel is super friendly and each tapa is crafted by the corresponding expert. We took the rabbit, squid, pantomaca, bravas and Aubergine tapas. The first two were amazin, tender tasty very well combined. The other three were for us the sides, they were really good.in particular it made us happy tthat our patatas bravas didnt have Mayonnaise as in most places. I can only recommend them all.

Yelp
This is our go-to in Stoke Newington. Lovely food. Very fresh. Reasonable prices. We enjoy watching the cooking from the kitchen bar. I think we could eat here every night without getting tired.

Yelp
A perfect tapas experience in a friendly atmosphere. Captures the spirit of this neighborhood-- such a refreshing change from antiseptic and indifferent central London restaurants. Stunningly delicious Spanish food in an intimate setting. The meat and vegetarian dishes were equally delicious, which is rare. The special - a pork cut called pressa Iberia-- was one of the best pieces of meat I've ever had. Such a delight.

Yelp
The space is quite nice to start off: dark and light wood, neon signs and candlelit tables create a cosy, buzzing atmosphere. The staff is smiley and very accommodating. However, it's quite LOUD so make sure your food companion is speaking loudly as I had to ask my friend to speak up several times. I got the figs and manchego salad for £6.5 and the fried aubergines with walnuts and sugar-cane honey for £4.5. The first was pretty bland- I've had much sharper manchego in Spain- and the second dish sounded amazing but was... ok as well. The first bite or two was delicious. The aubergine had a lovely slightly crispy texture. But then the flavour faded so ended up pretty middling by the end. You get about 5-7 slices of aubergine so a good amount for a tapa portion. My companion got the tortilla and prawns with aioli. She liked the tortilla but we agreed the prawns were ok. We also got a carafe of the cheapest red wine for £11 and it was fine. However, I think £11 is kind of steep for how small the carafe was!
