Eshkol - Review - Ardmore - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Philly is rich with Ethiopian restaurants: Abyssinia, Dahlak, and Doro Bet, to name a few. The same cannot be said for the Main Line—Eshkol has the distinction of being the only game in town. From the silkscreened decorative tablecloths and wicker lampshades to the vast assortment of soaps and hand lotions in the restroom, it is a charming love letter of a restaurant. The hospitality and food give you the feeling of being invited to an Ethiopian family dinner. photo credit: Jonathan Deutsch And much like a family dinner, it may take a while until the meal is served (in some cases, an hour-plus) and some house rules apply: the restaurant does not allow alcohol. But what might be the city’s best doro wat, tikil gomen, and ater alicha are worth the wait. Photos of the dishes, friendly servers, and utensils on offer help to broaden the horizons of the Ethiopian-food uninitiated. But those who know their way around injera on a mesob will be pleased as well. Dine alone for a weekday lunch or a communal dinner with family and friends. Food Rundown Doro Wot Doro wot is the signature dish of Ethiopia and this is one of Philly’s best. Thicker than some, this chicken and egg stew simmered in berbere spice is a must. Zilbo Chunks of lamb are braised with collard greens, onion, garlic, ginger, and jalapeno. Despite the flavorful list of ingredients, this dish needed more of all of them as well as more time for the lamb to be as tender and luscious as it should be. Tikil Gomen Another classic where Eshkol’s version may be Philly’s best, turmeric, garlic and ginger-infused cabbage is sauteed until melty. Get this as one of the two included sides with any dish or as a vegan entree. Ater Alcha Choose this as your other side: yellow split peas are cooked with onion, turmeric, garlic and ginger, and mashed. The sides are as good as the entrees–consider the vegan combo to try them all." - Jonathan Deutsch

Stepping into Eshkol feels like going home. Delicious, warm and inviting. The space itself is lovely. Family run, dishes packed with flavor we will surely return. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the a single of vegan and a single of meat dish (photo attached). Gluten Free friendly as well. I recommend trying the tea (I had mine decaf). You can make a reservation online.

I was so excited when I heard Ethiopian cuisine had finally come to the Main Line. We ate here last night and the food was outstanding. We ordered a double meat sampler, minced beef entree and a chicken entree with multiple sides. The meat dishes were cooked perfectly. Not an ounce of gristle or sinew. Just delicious chicken, lamb and beef that was so tender and tasty. Everyone at the table enjoyed the experience. The staff is very friendly and helpful explaining the menu. Can't wait to eat here again.

Don't let this quaint Ethiopian restaurant fool you, the food is BIG in flavor and delicious spices! The ambiance is perfect if you want an intimate dining experience, with the dining tables arranged close together to maximize the space. Still, you'd be surprised how much food a 4-top table can hold, and it doesn't matter that you can hear every single word of the conversations at the table next to you because you'll soon tune them out once your food gets there. The presentation of the food meets and exceeds all expectations. The dining area itself is clean and tidy, and the service is attentive, friendly, and prompt. The bathroom is also an experience--with a plethora of Bath & Body Works soaps, lotions, and body splashes from which to choose--and very beautifully decorated as well! We ordered the vegan combo platter and the meat combo platter. If you like it spicy, Eskhol's got you! There are a couple milder options for those who can't tolerate spice. The chef/owner came out to check on us to ensure we had a positive dining experience. It's these personal touches of the smaller, private restaurants that make a world of difference of whether or not we plan on returning. With a resounding yes, we exclaimed we would definitely return, even though there are Ethiopian restaurants closer to home. It's no wonder Eskhol gets 5 star reviews. We got lucky and were able to be seated right away--on a weeknight. I recommend making reservations if your heart is set on eating here. It's no secret that they're the best in town.

This place is already booked and busy, needing a reservation or a call ahead for a table. As a fellow Ethiopian, the food felt like a home away from home. We had the vegan and meat platter along with Eshkol special tea. Everything was delicious and gorgeously made, very filling portions as well. The interior design is cozy and warm(checkout the bathroom, it’s amazing).

We were very excited to learn there was finally an Ethiopian restaurant closer to us than having to travel to the city. Food was delicious with perfect portion size ! Our original table did not fit our party and we were accommodated so we could still enjoy the restaurant. The owners made sure to come around to meet our needs and even came and mingled with our children! Definitely a gem!

Eshkol Ethiopian Restaurant is truly special — not just because of the delicious, authentic food, but because of the incredible story and people behind it. My sister Chaltu Merga, the owner, has been dreaming of opening this restaurant for years. What stands out most is her resilience and strong will. She didn’t let anything stop her. She pushed through every challenge, and today, Eshkol is a beautiful reflection of her dedication and passion. One thing that absolutely sets Eshkol apart is the cleanliness — it’s spotless. I’ve been to many Ethiopian restaurants, but none come close to this level of care and attention. Though it’s a small space, it’s maintained with a level of excellence that goes above and beyond. It’s also a true family affair. Her husband, Teshoma, is incredibly supportive and down-to-earth. I deeply admire how he has stood with her every step of the way. Their three sons are also actively helping out — a beautiful example of unity and shared purpose. Over the past three weeks, the place has been buzzing with activity. My family and I have already visited twice, and the food has been consistently amazing. Yes, they’re still settling into the rhythm of things, but the heart, effort, and love poured into Eshkol are unmistakable. If you're in Philly and want an authentic, warm, and truly inspiring dining experience — Eshkol is the place to be.

The customer service was exceptional. The food was well-seasoned, neither overly salty nor excessively spicy, just enough to awaken your senses. I don’t mind the price as long as the quality is good. This dining experience is truly exceptional.

Google
Fantastic food. I have been looking for an Ethiopian restaurant to open up near me for the longest time. I am so happy that this place is here. The food is fantastic. I am vegan so I got the veg dish which includes multiple vegan dishes with injera. My family eats everything so they tried the meat dishes. I usually eat Ethiopian food when I go to Washington DC and really the only place where I can get great Ethiopian food. Honestly this is better than the restaurants I have had in DC. The service is fantastic. It’s a family run business. The chef came out and made sure all the food tasted well. I will be coming back.

Yelp
Food was great and the combo platter was perfect to feed two. Also, it's family run which came through in the service and cooking. Excited to go back soon!

Yelp
A winning combination is experience meeting or exceeding expectations. Our visit accomplished that feat. A packed (tiny) house on a weeknight secured more easily by the recent addition of online reservations. Hosting, serving, ordering, bussing, all the same couple servers. But they are helpful and excited about the menu and will walk you through. Ethiopian food is foreign to me, and I truly don't mean that in a snarky, obvious way. Just never knowingly had food or customs. Just try everything! Whatever you can on a night and something else next time. Bursting with a veritable flavor symphony of sweet, spicy, bold, subtle there is so much. Eat without utensils. Use a rolled bread, pita, naan, type offering to mop up. Go for it. It's fun.

Yelp
What a bustling place for people of all ages! The service was friendly, as in they are so familiar with repeat customers and considerate to the family with the toddler beside us. It makes me so happy that the injera (bread) is 100% teff (AKA gluten free) and the majority of the menu is also gluten free. While there are 9-10 tables, I would recommend sitting in the front at the communal style shared platter. Eat the food with your hands in the shared style of the culture. Google it if you're nervous but it's just better this way! Loved the vegan combo and the Doro Wot. It was plenty for our party of 2. We will return to try the rest.

Yelp
We needed a reservation at Eshkol to get a table for 3 at 7pm on a Thursday. They are busy, and for good reason! It's a small place but worth a spot. The staff is extremely friendly staff and the manager checked on us to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. We ordered a double vegan combo and a single meat combo to share for 3. This was plenty of food and we were quite hungry! The combos are a great way to try a bunch of different things if you're not afraid to get your hands into it. I am a bit of a wimp for spice but the flavors were so good it had me exploring. The restaurant is a bit loud when full it's a small space with wood floors. Side note: Surprisingly nice bathroom! There were free menstrual products available. We had a great experience and glad to have a good Ethiopian restaurant nearby. We will definitely be back and bring wine as they are BYOB!

Jenn M.

Yelp
I'm thrilled to have a fantastic Ethiopian restaurant closer to home. The food was delicious and the servers were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. We ate the vegan combo and a meat entree (one of the doro dishes). We also ordered the fesoliya, which I especially loved. The zucchini bread also got rave reviews from our kid. The bathroom was also very clean. Edited to note that I recommend calling ahead or making a reservation online. We got the last unreserved table for the night when we walked in at 4:45 pm on a Saturday (and only because someone had just cancelled).

Yelp
Thank you Eshkol for opening in Ardmore!! We are so happy with this addition to the food scene here. The food is delicious and healthy, with lots of vegetables, and we love that it's run by a family and it feels cozy and welcoming inside. My husband and I got the zilbo (lamb) and Chaltu's special minchet abish (minced beef), and we tried all four of the available side dishes. Both dishes were excellent, and the sides too! The zilbo has a more subtle, light flavor. They offer spices on the side if you want an extra spicy kick. As for the minchet abish -- I can see why it is the special!! It's super juicy and flavorful, and the injera just soaks up all the flavor! It was amaaaaazing. That is definitely my favorite! We will definitely be back to try everything else on the menu. Love this restaurant!!

Yelp
So excited to have Ethiopian on the Main Line!!! Love the vegan combo. one of my favorite places to eat around here.

Yelp
I can't speak highly enough about my wife and my experience here. The restaurant is family run and everyone with whom we interacted was extremely nice and friendly. It was like going to someone's home for a meal. We went for weekday lunch and tried the vegan sampler, meat sampler, coffee and iced tea. Everything was delicious. The iced tea was so refreshing and interesting. The food was excellent. They told us the place gets packed on evenings and weekends, so I'd suggest reservations or coming in for weekday lunch. We can't wait to be back.

Taylor S.

Yelp
I drove by the other day and noticed this new Ethiopian restaurant, and based on the cute branding I had the thought to check if it happened to have gluten free injera. Lucky for me they focus on traditional Ethiopian cuisine including delivering fully teff injera. The food and coffee were excellent. I am also vegan and got the vegan combo, which was very good and much better than other vegan Ethiopian dishes I've had in the area so far. I can also say that the owners were so kind and welcoming when I was in, definitely give them a try!! Ethiopian food is a favorite of mine and I'm so thankful to Eshkol for allowing me to have injera again for the first time in years!

Yelp
This is the kind of establishment that, for most Americans of non-African descent, challenges you with new flavors and rewards you with a broader palate. Eshkol makes unabashedly authentic Ethiopian cuisine, and following their grand opening a week ago, have become a smash hit in the main line, with reservations booked through. Various curried and deeply spiced meat and vegetable dishes are served in generous combo platters atop injera, a quintessential sourdough flatbread of the region. (Fun fact - injera is made of tiff, a type of whole grain millet, making it both flavorful and nutritious.) The delicious food is accompanied by a truly wonderful and hospitable service staff, some of which are related directly to the owner and his wife, the chef. Eshkol is a true family establishment, and worth the trek.

Yelp
Exceptional. best Ethiopian ive had . Meet platter is a life changing experience. Get the banana bread.

Mike D.

Yelp
An outstanding family business with great care put into every dish. We had the doro watt and the tibs plus a whole bunch of sides. Everything was really delicious.

Yelp
Vegans and carnivores alike will find plenty of options, which worked out perfectly for us. All of the dishes are clearly prepared with careful attention in bringing traditional Ethiopian food to diners who might not be so familiar with it. You'll find plenty of classic dishes perfectly executed--highly recommend either the vegan sampler or the meat one. If you have any questions about the food or the ingredients, don't hesitate to ask the staff--they were super kind, patient, and informative! Can't wait to go back.

Carol T.

Yelp
Food, service, and atmosphere was excellent. Be sure you make reservations. If you like Ethiopian food, you will not be disappointed.

Leul G.

Yelp
As an ethiopian that moved here about half a decade ago, I'm invested into this restaurant. Not only for its exceptional food , but for its unique environment that comforts your soul. I can't emphasize their hospitality as well, I felt as if I was home. I love my mom's cooking, and the chefs hand was as if my own mother cooked me these meals. if I could rate this place out of ten i would give it a 20.
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
This is an excellent addition to the Ardmore food scene. I appreciate that they offer a dedicated vegan menu. Eshkol may be the most vegan-friendly restaurant in the Philly area. I ordered the Fesoliya (green beans and carrots) as an entree. Of all the items I tried, it was the best. I would happily order it again. Entrees come with a choice of two sides from a list of five items. For my sides, I selected Tikil Gomen (sauteed cabbage) and Key Sir (beets and potatoes). I will replicate that offer the next time I go. I am sensitive to spice, so these three items are fine if you struggle with spicy foods, as I do.

Yelp
We're so lucky to have Eshkol's delicious Ethiopian cuisine in the suburbs - no need to battle the city's parking and traffic! Our party of 3 came for dinner on a Wednesday (with a reservation!) and loved the friendly ambience, warm service (by the chef's lovely family), and most of all the fabulous food. I'm not an Ethiopian food expert (have had it only about 3x) but thought everything was amazing, fresh and and perfectly spiced (peppery in a great way; we are spicy food fans). We ordered a single veg combo and a double meat combo for the 3 of us and somehow ate most of the generous portions. Definitely ask for forks at the end to make it easier to eat the tasty, saturated injera base layer. Thank you Eshkol! We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Hospitable service, delicious food, and a fresh experience. Some may be intimidated by eating with their hands but I say let go on your inhibitions and dig in (though they will provide cutlery if you so choose). Accommodating to our baby and the chef came out to check on us herself. Looking forward to coming back.

Bob N.

Yelp
WOW...I love this place! Many years ago, I went to an Ethiopian restaurant and remembered enjoying the food. And now there is one in my neighborhood, so I decided to give it a try. The restaurant is small and very attractive. The waiter could not have been more helpful or gracious. I started with their Eshkol Special Sparkling water. A most delightful, refreshing drink with ginger, honey and some other ingredients. I decided to have the Vegan Combo dinner, which included 5 different vegan dishes, and an Ethiopian bread which was used to eat the food with, Ethiopian style, no spoon or fork, and no chop sticks (we could have had utensils, but when in Addis Ababa, do as the Ethiopians do!). The food could not have been any better. Each dish was just as delicious as the next. Owner, Chef Chaltu, could not have been any more welcoming. During the course of the dinner, she would leave the kitchen and come out into the eating area and speak with each table and thanking them for coming. That is class you don't see often when out dining. Eshkol has become one of my go-to places. I give it two thumbs way up! Next time I think I will have the meat combo plate!

Yelp
What an incredible addition to the neighborhood! Food was outstanding and service was just as good

Jodi M.

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal to celebrate a birthday. There were four of us and we had the vegan combo and the meat combo. The owners were warm, incredibly welcoming, and so gracious. A true family run restaurant, where the food is clearly cooked with love. Grab a reservation and enjoy this fantastic addition to our community.

David K.

Yelp
Food was very good and authentic. The spice combos were amazing. Portions were a bit small but menu was designed to give everyone a chance to experience multiple parts of it without spending a lot of money. Prices were very reasonable. Apps came out quickly but a long delay in the appearance of the entrees. It's family owned and operated. The chef came out to greet us and checked up on our progress. The husband was also involved in multiple aspects of the meal and son was primary server. Very friendly and welcoming. The ambiance was warm. It's a small dining room but tastefully finished it did get a bit loud when it was full at the height of service but we could still talk albeit at a higher level than I'd like. I would definitely go back to experience more of the cuisine.
google avatar

Becca B.

Yelp
This is hands down the BEST Ethiopian food in the Philly area. I found the places in west Philly adequate, but kind of watered down flavors. Here, the injeera is 100% teff (yay for gluten free folks like me), the vegan platter is AMAZING and so flavorful, and the owners are an incredibly kind and attentive family. Get reservations--it's packed!

Ty B.

Yelp
The food is delicious!!! Love this spot! Superb service. Definitely a authentic vibe. Gotta try it.

Pam M.

Yelp
If I lived near this restaurant I would most definitely eat there as often as possible. The vegan combo and meat combo are perfectly balanced options to try the first time so that you can pick and choose specific dishes more easily all the times you go back in the future. Warm and gracious family hospitality, comfortable atmosphere and very reasonable prices. If you're looking to excite your palette with out of the ordinary vibrant and bold flavors, book yourself a table at Eshkol before it gets too difficult to get a reservation.

Jeanie J.

Yelp
Had the best experience tonight at Eshkol! We went as a party of five and started with the hummus. We loved the hummus and probably could have eaten two. We ordered the meat combo platter for our entree and the double portion was more than enough. My favorites on the meat platter were the Doro Wat (chicken) and the Kitfo with Ayib (spicy beef with cheese). My favorite side on the combo was the Key Sir (beets and potatoes). We also got a side of collard greens but I can't remember the name. They were outstanding. This is such a great family run business. Parking is convenient- there is a parking lot less than a block away from the restaurant. Looking forward to going back!

M C.

Yelp
Amazing owners. They were engaging, accommodating, patient. Insisted we enjoy a dessert on the house. Delicious food. Pleasant atmosphere. Attentive service. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
A cozy, comfortable and definitely a place that serves delicious food. Truly enjoyed the Mesob experience.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner at Eshkol! The word is out about this place and it was packed! Would recommend making a reservation if you want a table on a Friday or Saturday night. It was pure comfort food. We had the meat and vegan combo platters and it was the perfect sampling of the menu and the right amount of food for our party of two adults and two kids. The service was friendly and inviting. We will be back!

Cailin L.

Yelp
Went there last week and the food was so. good. Lately I haven't been too open to trying new foods but I'm so glad I tried this food. We got the meat and vegan platter and I highly reccomend! Our server was very knowledgeable and sweet and this restaurant is new and a family business. One of the meat dishes is homemade and the chef's special recipe so you can't find it anywhere else! The restaurant is cozy and has a nice view of Ardmore to people watch if you would like. This place is truly a hidden gem, I will be back soon.

Pedro V.

Yelp
First time trying this place. Food was incredibly delicious. Beautiful presentation of food. Friendly and attentive wait staff.

Devon E.

Yelp
This new restaurant is owned by the friendliest, kindest family, and everything was SO delicious and authentic. The meat dishes were spicy, but perfectly spicy in my opinion. Can't wait to go back :)

Yelp
Food is fabulous however using one's hands to eat and no utensils a bit different and difficult

Wai H.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Eshkol and it exceeded our expectations. The staff was incredibly friendly and we were seated right away with our reservation. Our server, Yoni, was outstanding, warm, welcoming and highly knowledgeable about the menu. He provided excellent descriptions and recommendations. We ordered one vegan and one meat platter to sample a variety of dishes, and every bite was a delight. The flavors were vibrant and absolutely delicious. Overall, it was an amazing dining experience and we can't wait to return.

Naomi P.

Yelp
Amazing food! Let me tell y'all something. As an Ethiopian, if me and my family don't eat at home, we go searching for good Ethiopian food. Eshkol is THAT place. We have travelled all through Philly and the quality of Ethiopian food is horrible. We ground a home away from home. A place where the food tastes like my mom's. I'm sending a call out to our Ethiopian brothers and sisters to come here because it feels like home!!

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! The ambiance is fantastic with authentic Ethiopian decor, music, art. It was a real treat to eat here! It is a small restaurant and the family who runs the restaurant are so warm and welcoming. There is a lot of love in this restaurant! The menu has many vegan options, which is a great option. Everything we ordered was amazing, everyone cleared their plates!

Amanuel B.

Yelp
Amazing customer service and food! Only will get better with their new upcoming dishes

Anna D.

Yelp
Loved the very tasty food and the excellent, friendly service. The lamb with collard greens was so delicious!

Drew D.

Yelp
Really good vegan food option! And best of all, it is run by a lovely family who are on site and very friendly

Yelp
My family and I tried Eshkol recently, and we will definitely do so again! We did take-out, so I can't speak to the ambience of the place (though it seems cosy and the staff were super-friendly). I love Ethiopian food - I've had it many times in other cities - and Eshkol is fantastic! We tried their Ater Alicha, Gomen, and Alicha Difin Misir with sides of Shiro, Tikil Gomen, Key Sir, and Ater Alicha. All the flavors were great, with a bit of sweetness in a few and the one spicy side (Shiro) not overbearing. The injera was perfect and there was plenty of it. For those familiar with similar food in the Philly area, I can compare with the two Eritrean restaurants I've been to in West Philly (Dahlak and Abysnnia): Eshkol is equal in quality, if not slightly better (to my taste), but the portions were smaller at Eshkol for similar prices. (Although maybe this is the high Main Line rent being a factor?) Nonetheless, I am so happy to have great Ethiopian food available in Ardmore. They seem plenty busy whenever I walk by, so hopefully they will be successful and I can enjoy this yumminess for a long time!

Naomi K.

Yelp
The food was amazing! We had the vegan combo and the minced beef. Both dishes were seasoned well and the 'crepe '( almost like a tortilla ,but softer) that we used to wrap the food complimented it. We loved the food and will be back again! The service was excellent! They helped us pick out our dishes and were very friendly!

Rebecca E.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food in a bright, warm, cozy spot. Second time having Ethiopian and it was a fun culinary adventure. The servers were helpful in suggesting dishes for our party and we loved everything that was recommended. Good mix of spicy and mild options. Can't wait to go back again.

Suzanne P.

Yelp
We had a chance to visit last night finally. Such a lovely experience. I am familiar with Ethiopian food from living in DC for years. The main difference here is the secret ingredient- made with love! This is a family affair - the wife is cooking and husband and son are front of the house. All three checked on us and made sure everything was perfect . The restaurant is cozy and clean. We tried the combo meat and vegan platters for variety- nothing disappoints. We will be back!

S P.

Yelp
This was a missing cuisine on the Main Line. Our family including kids loved the food. We got the vegetarian combo and meat combo platters and they were enough for 4 (plus leftovers). The owners were so warm and caring. Will definitely go back.

Susanna R.

Yelp
Excellent and varied food. We chose a vegetarian and a meat platter to maximize our varied intro. They were both very tasty and a good way to try several things. The staff were wonderful and helpful. I will be back. I highly recommend this restaurant!!!

Alexis D.

Yelp
Holy smokes. What an amazing meal and experience. You can feel and taste the love within the food, and the whole family running the show is so lovely, warm and welcoming. I'm very glad we were able to get reservations. We've told so many folks about Eshkol, and we cannot wait to go back!

Anjela G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, food was delicious. The owner lady is involved and you could tell she does care about her restaurant. The very first thing i notice is their bathroom - it's super clean and says a lot about cleanness of this place. Highly recommend!

tyler g.

Yelp
Food delicious. Please continue to make delicious food. Did I mention that it was delicious! I didn't take a picture I ate the food too fast the injera was delicious!
