Eshkol - Review - Ardmore - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Philly is rich with Ethiopian restaurants: Abyssinia, Dahlak, and Doro Bet, to name a few. The same cannot be said for the Main Line—Eshkol has the distinction of being the only game in town. From the silkscreened decorative tablecloths and wicker lampshades to the vast assortment of soaps and hand lotions in the restroom, it is a charming love letter of a restaurant. The hospitality and food give you the feeling of being invited to an Ethiopian family dinner. photo credit: Jonathan Deutsch And much like a family dinner, it may take a while until the meal is served (in some cases, an hour-plus) and some house rules apply: the restaurant does not allow alcohol. But what might be the city’s best doro wat, tikil gomen, and ater alicha are worth the wait. Photos of the dishes, friendly servers, and utensils on offer help to broaden the horizons of the Ethiopian-food uninitiated. But those who know their way around injera on a mesob will be pleased as well. Dine alone for a weekday lunch or a communal dinner with family and friends. Food Rundown Doro Wot Doro wot is the signature dish of Ethiopia and this is one of Philly’s best. Thicker than some, this chicken and egg stew simmered in berbere spice is a must. Zilbo Chunks of lamb are braised with collard greens, onion, garlic, ginger, and jalapeno. Despite the flavorful list of ingredients, this dish needed more of all of them as well as more time for the lamb to be as tender and luscious as it should be. Tikil Gomen Another classic where Eshkol’s version may be Philly’s best, turmeric, garlic and ginger-infused cabbage is sauteed until melty. Get this as one of the two included sides with any dish or as a vegan entree. Ater Alcha Choose this as your other side: yellow split peas are cooked with onion, turmeric, garlic and ginger, and mashed. The sides are as good as the entrees–consider the vegan combo to try them all." - Jonathan Deutsch

Google
I visited yesterday with my husband and a friend, and everything about this place was wonderful. The food was excellent—rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The owners were incredibly kind and courteous, which made the experience even more special. We’ve tried Ethiopian food at several well-known spots in Philly, and this was easily the best we’ve had. Highly authentic, welcoming, and delicious. I would 100% recommend this restaurant and can’t wait to come back. Dishes: Double meat combo Chaltu’s special Minchet Abish (must try for spice lovers) Misir wot Fesoliya

Google
In the suburban, Ardmore area, it is hard to find a good Ethiopian restaurant restaurants, but glad that we find one in this area. It is family owned, service is very friendly and attentive. Recommend to make reservation. We had the meat combo, the vegan combo, banana bread, and traditional Ethiopian coffee. The platters were fresh, good and authentic, the coffee was excellent, the banana cake was a little dry. I am giving a four star because I think other Ethiopian restaurants in Philadelphia like Amsale Cafe food is a little more tasty.

Hope N.

Google
This mom and pop owned restaurant is a hidden gem. The owners are so sweet and are very patient explaining each dish as well as showing the proper authentic way to eat the dishes. Great atmosphere and the food was delicious. You will not be disappointed even the left overs hit. The traditional macchiato was really good of course. Side note the restroom was so pretty and very considerate having feminine productions (pads & tampons), lotions, and soaps. There are no negatives with this spot.

Google
It's no coincidence that this place is 5 stars with almost 400 reviews. I have been to several Ethiopian restaurants around Philly but this is definitely at the top of my list. The food is authentic and fresh. Portion sizing is great. The large meat platter for 2 served four of us, with some still left over. The professionalism and kindness of the owner and servers are very apparent. Also, their restroom is a great addition (iykyk).

Google
I really enjoyed my time at this place. I got the Doro Wot, and it was delicious! I will say that the injera is very filling, and the taste was a little surprising. It was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I was very pleased. Their banana bread is so good and tastes really fresh/homemade. The service was great, the chef walked around to each table greeting everyone. Thanks guys!

Google
Tesh and his family own this amazing, quaint gem of a restaurant and it is phenomenal vibes, food, flavor, and comfort. I brought my dad who has never tried Ethiopian food and historically doesn't love food with as much flavor as African cuisine tends to. But this family blew it away with their delivery! Every dish was amazing and created with love. I can't wait to come back with more of my friends and family. Thank you for a great dinner!! highly recommend!!

Google
This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I am so happy I went here for it! The food was excellent, flavorful, and fresh. The smaller meat platter was enough for 2 people to share, the tea was delicious, and the atmosphere was so warm, comforting, and artistic. The price to food quality/quantity was very fair. The staff was so welcoming, kind, and patient. You can tell they care a lot about their work and are excellent in their craft—especially the owner who came over to us! It felt like a home-cooked meal and I will absolutely be coming back.

Google
Went here with my parents for a birthday dinner. The owners were very nice and friendly. Learned a lot about Ethiopian food and culture. The inside is clean and beautifully decorated. It smells very nice inside. The food was delicious and filling. Would absolutely come here again and recommend to anyone looking for a good place to eat.

Yelp
Love this family-owned Ethiopian restaurant right in downtown Ardmore, on Lancaster Ave. It's super close to Ardmore Music Hall, so if you're looking for a place to eat before a show, make sure to check them out. My favorite dish is the Fesoliya (green beans and carrots). I like to get this with two sides and it comes with plenty of injera for dipping. They handmake their injera, a process that takes several days, and it is perfectly sour, and delicious. Half of their menu is vegan and clearly labeled as such!
google avatar

Yelp
What a bustling place for people of all ages! The service was friendly, as in they are so familiar with repeat customers and considerate to the family with the toddler beside us. It makes me so happy that the injera (bread) is 100% teff (AKA gluten free) and the majority of the menu is also gluten free. While there are 9-10 tables, I would recommend sitting in the front at the communal style shared platter. Eat the food with your hands in the shared style of the culture. Google it if you're nervous but it's just better this way! Loved the vegan combo and the Doro Wot. It was plenty for our party of 2. We will return to try the rest.

Yelp
A winning combination is experience meeting or exceeding expectations. Our visit accomplished that feat. A packed (tiny) house on a weeknight secured more easily by the recent addition of online reservations. Hosting, serving, ordering, bussing, all the same couple servers. But they are helpful and excited about the menu and will walk you through. Ethiopian food is foreign to me, and I truly don't mean that in a snarky, obvious way. Just never knowingly had food or customs. Just try everything! Whatever you can on a night and something else next time. Bursting with a veritable flavor symphony of sweet, spicy, bold, subtle there is so much. Eat without utensils. Use a rolled bread, pita, naan, type offering to mop up. Go for it. It's fun.

Linda M.

Yelp
By far the best Ethiopian restaurant I have eaten at. The food is absolutely delicious and always consistent. A lot of my family comes to visit from other states and always requests we eat at Eshkol. The restaurant is cozy and homey. The chef and her husband and sons always make you feel welcome. Make sure you make a reservation as the restaurant is small and popular. LInda M.

Yelp
Service was absolutely incredible, we enjoyed our waiter very much. Food was outstanding with generous portions. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Don't let this quaint Ethiopian restaurant fool you, the food is BIG in flavor and delicious spices! The ambiance is perfect if you want an intimate dining experience, with the dining tables arranged close together to maximize the space. Still, you'd be surprised how much food a 4-top table can hold, and it doesn't matter that you can hear every single word of the conversations at the table next to you because you'll soon tune them out once your food gets there. The presentation of the food meets and exceeds all expectations. The dining area itself is clean and tidy, and the service is attentive, friendly, and prompt. The bathroom is also an experience--with a plethora of Bath & Body Works soaps, lotions, and body splashes from which to choose--and very beautifully decorated as well! We ordered the vegan combo platter and the meat combo platter. If you like it spicy, Eskhol's got you! There are a couple milder options for those who can't tolerate spice. The chef/owner came out to check on us to ensure we had a positive dining experience. It's these personal touches of the smaller, private restaurants that make a world of difference of whether or not we plan on returning. With a resounding yes, we exclaimed we would definitely return, even though there are Ethiopian restaurants closer to home. It's no wonder Eskhol gets 5 star reviews. We got lucky and were able to be seated right away--on a weeknight. I recommend making reservations if your heart is set on eating here. It's no secret that they're the best in town.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about our dinner. everything was so delicious, we practically licked our plates clean! the owners and staff were helpful and friendly explaining the menu. We were there late on a quiet night so we got to talk with the family who own and run the restaurant. we will be back for sure.

Yelp
Thank you Eshkol for opening in Ardmore!! We are so happy with this addition to the food scene here. The food is delicious and healthy, with lots of vegetables, and we love that it's run by a family and it feels cozy and welcoming inside. My husband and I got the zilbo (lamb) and Chaltu's special minchet abish (minced beef), and we tried all four of the available side dishes. Both dishes were excellent, and the sides too! The zilbo has a more subtle, light flavor. They offer spices on the side if you want an extra spicy kick. As for the minchet abish -- I can see why it is the special!! It's super juicy and flavorful, and the injera just soaks up all the flavor! It was amaaaaazing. That is definitely my favorite! We will definitely be back to try everything else on the menu. Love this restaurant!!

Yelp
We needed a reservation at Eshkol to get a table for 3 at 7pm on a Thursday. They are busy, and for good reason! It's a small place but worth a spot. The staff is extremely friendly staff and the manager checked on us to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. We ordered a double vegan combo and a single meat combo to share for 3. This was plenty of food and we were quite hungry! The combos are a great way to try a bunch of different things if you're not afraid to get your hands into it. I am a bit of a wimp for spice but the flavors were so good it had me exploring. The restaurant is a bit loud when full it's a small space with wood floors. Side note: Surprisingly nice bathroom! There were free menstrual products available. We had a great experience and glad to have a good Ethiopian restaurant nearby. We will definitely be back and bring wine as they are BYOB!

S P.

Yelp
Absolutely the best dining experience in a long time. The food is exquisite and the atmosphere was wonderful. This is a family run restaurant so they are knowledgeable, warm and friendly. If we lived closer, we would be there several times a week. So glad we found Eshkol!

Denise C.

Yelp
My experience was so memorable and the food and service were outstanding. Whether you know Ethiopian cuisine or not, the owners are patient and so helpful!!! Can't wait to go back!

Mari A.

Yelp
I wish I had taken photos to upload but it was so delicious we forgot. I lived in Ethiopia for two years and this is by far the best Ethiopian restaurant I've eaten at in the US. The kitfo made my heart sing. The doro wat was my brother's favorite. Everything was amazing. Do yourself a favor and order the tea for your dessert!! (And add lots of sugar - the traditional Ethiopian way!) It's a home brew that is perfect. Everyone who works there is very kind! The dining room is filled with traditional Ethiopian art - and a gorgeous fan. 12/10 will go again!! (And again, and again...) Pro tip: Book a reservation!!

Adam C.

Yelp
Excellent and delicious food, with friendly and attentive service. A total gem. Can't wait to come back!

Jean F.

Yelp
Our group of seven thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We had the meat and vegan combos and a few sides, and everything was delicious. From the greetings as we entered to the goodbyes as we left, the friendly family atmosphere and timely service made our visit perfect. Don't skip the banana bread for dessert!
google avatar

Yelp
Exceptional. best Ethiopian ive had . Meet platter is a life changing experience. Get the banana bread.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was delicious! We had a veggie combo and a meat combo. Great seasoning and rich sauces galore. Definitely recommend it if you're looking for authentic Ethiopian food.

Yelp
I can't speak highly enough about my wife and my experience here. The restaurant is family run and everyone with whom we interacted was extremely nice and friendly. It was like going to someone's home for a meal. We went for weekday lunch and tried the vegan sampler, meat sampler, coffee and iced tea. Everything was delicious. The iced tea was so refreshing and interesting. The food was excellent. They told us the place gets packed on evenings and weekends, so I'd suggest reservations or coming in for weekday lunch. We can't wait to be back.

Yelp
This is an excellent addition to the Ardmore food scene. I appreciate that they offer a dedicated vegan menu. Eshkol may be the most vegan-friendly restaurant in the Philly area. I ordered the Fesoliya (green beans and carrots) as an entree. Of all the items I tried, it was the best. I would happily order it again. Entrees come with a choice of two sides from a list of five items. For my sides, I selected Tikil Gomen (sauteed cabbage) and Key Sir (beets and potatoes). I will replicate that offer the next time I go. I am sensitive to spice, so these three items are fine if you struggle with spicy foods, as I do.

Peter K.

Yelp
Had lunch there yesterday. My wife and I shared the Vegetarian and Meat Combo. Excellent no every level! Complex and careful spicing. The lamb may have been the best I've had. Absolutely exquisite. We had the Ethiopian coffee afterwards. Smooth, without any bitterness. Also excellent. This is a definite "have to go back" restaurant.

Yelp
This is the kind of establishment that, for most Americans of non-African descent, challenges you with new flavors and rewards you with a broader palate. Eshkol makes unabashedly authentic Ethiopian cuisine, and following their grand opening a week ago, have become a smash hit in the main line, with reservations booked through. Various curried and deeply spiced meat and vegetable dishes are served in generous combo platters atop injera, a quintessential sourdough flatbread of the region. (Fun fact - injera is made of tiff, a type of whole grain millet, making it both flavorful and nutritious.) The delicious food is accompanied by a truly wonderful and hospitable service staff, some of which are related directly to the owner and his wife, the chef. Eshkol is a true family establishment, and worth the trek.
google avatar

Lin Z.

Yelp
We're so lucky to have Eshkol's delicious Ethiopian cuisine in the suburbs - no need to battle the city's parking and traffic! Our party of 3 came for dinner on a Wednesday (with a reservation!) and loved the friendly ambience, warm service (by the chef's lovely family), and most of all the fabulous food. I'm not an Ethiopian food expert (have had it only about 3x) but thought everything was amazing, fresh and and perfectly spiced (peppery in a great way; we are spicy food fans). We ordered a single veg combo and a double meat combo for the 3 of us and somehow ate most of the generous portions. Definitely ask for forks at the end to make it easier to eat the tasty, saturated injera base layer. Thank you Eshkol! We will be back!

Taylor S.

Yelp
I drove by the other day and noticed this new Ethiopian restaurant, and based on the cute branding I had the thought to check if it happened to have gluten free injera. Lucky for me they focus on traditional Ethiopian cuisine including delivering fully teff injera. The food and coffee were excellent. I am also vegan and got the vegan combo, which was very good and much better than other vegan Ethiopian dishes I've had in the area so far. I can also say that the owners were so kind and welcoming when I was in, definitely give them a try!! Ethiopian food is a favorite of mine and I'm so thankful to Eshkol for allowing me to have injera again for the first time in years!
google avatar

N K.

Yelp
So excited to have Ethiopian on the Main Line!!! Love the vegan combo. one of my favorite places to eat around here.
google avatar

D P.

Yelp
Vegans and carnivores alike will find plenty of options, which worked out perfectly for us. All of the dishes are clearly prepared with careful attention in bringing traditional Ethiopian food to diners who might not be so familiar with it. You'll find plenty of classic dishes perfectly executed--highly recommend either the vegan sampler or the meat one. If you have any questions about the food or the ingredients, don't hesitate to ask the staff--they were super kind, patient, and informative! Can't wait to go back.

Jenn M.

Yelp
I'm thrilled to have a fantastic Ethiopian restaurant closer to home. The food was delicious and the servers were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. We ate the vegan combo and a meat entree (one of the doro dishes). We also ordered the fesoliya, which I especially loved. The zucchini bread also got rave reviews from our kid. The bathroom was also very clean. Edited to note that I recommend calling ahead or making a reservation online. We got the last unreserved table for the night when we walked in at 4:45 pm on a Saturday (and only because someone had just cancelled).

Yelp
Four of us really enjoyed our dinner at this little place. My gomen dish was delicious & service was personal. Recommended!

Hope K.

Yelp
Such a joyful experience. Absolutely was delighted with the entire meal. Family run and felt so welcoming. Tasted delicious new foods and enjoyed every morsel. Owner explained the menu and helped us select an incredible lunch. Rate an A+++++.

Yelp
Hospitable service, delicious food, and a fresh experience. Some may be intimidated by eating with their hands but I say let go on your inhibitions and dig in (though they will provide cutlery if you so choose). Accommodating to our baby and the chef came out to check on us herself. Looking forward to coming back.

Zach R.

Yelp
Food was great and the combo platter was perfect to feed two. Also, it's family run which came through in the service and cooking. Excited to go back soon!

Eileen G.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and both times were amazing. It's family owned and run and they are so welcoming and took the time to explain the different dishes and were able to make it less spicy for me. It's a perfect place for a date night or family dinner.

Bob N.

Yelp
WOW...I love this place! Many years ago, I went to an Ethiopian restaurant and remembered enjoying the food. And now there is one in my neighborhood, so I decided to give it a try. The restaurant is small and very attractive. The waiter could not have been more helpful or gracious. I started with their Eshkol Special Sparkling water. A most delightful, refreshing drink with ginger, honey and some other ingredients. I decided to have the Vegan Combo dinner, which included 5 different vegan dishes, and an Ethiopian bread which was used to eat the food with, Ethiopian style, no spoon or fork, and no chop sticks (we could have had utensils, but when in Addis Ababa, do as the Ethiopians do!). The food could not have been any better. Each dish was just as delicious as the next. Owner, Chef Chaltu, could not have been any more welcoming. During the course of the dinner, she would leave the kitchen and come out into the eating area and speak with each table and thanking them for coming. That is class you don't see often when out dining. Eshkol has become one of my go-to places. I give it two thumbs way up! Next time I think I will have the meat combo plate!
google avatar

Nikki J.

Yelp
What an incredible addition to the neighborhood! Food was outstanding and service was just as good
google avatar

Becca B.

Yelp
This is hands down the BEST Ethiopian food in the Philly area. I found the places in west Philly adequate, but kind of watered down flavors. Here, the injeera is 100% teff (yay for gluten free folks like me), the vegan platter is AMAZING and so flavorful, and the owners are an incredibly kind and attentive family. Get reservations--it's packed!

Ty B.

Yelp
The food is delicious!!! Love this spot! Superb service. Definitely a authentic vibe. Gotta try it.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner at Eshkol! The word is out about this place and it was packed! Would recommend making a reservation if you want a table on a Friday or Saturday night. It was pure comfort food. We had the meat and vegan combo platters and it was the perfect sampling of the menu and the right amount of food for our party of two adults and two kids. The service was friendly and inviting. We will be back!
google avatar

Shiva G.

Yelp
A cozy, comfortable and definitely a place that serves delicious food. Truly enjoyed the Mesob experience.

Andrea M.

Yelp
Food was great. Family owned business that was very welcoming. Make reservations as the space is small.

Jeanie J.

Yelp
Had the best experience tonight at Eshkol! We went as a party of five and started with the hummus. We loved the hummus and probably could have eaten two. We ordered the meat combo platter for our entree and the double portion was more than enough. My favorites on the meat platter were the Doro Wat (chicken) and the Kitfo with Ayib (spicy beef with cheese). My favorite side on the combo was the Key Sir (beets and potatoes). We also got a side of collard greens but I can't remember the name. They were outstanding. This is such a great family run business. Parking is convenient- there is a parking lot less than a block away from the restaurant. Looking forward to going back!

Jodi M.

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal to celebrate a birthday. There were four of us and we had the vegan combo and the meat combo. The owners were warm, incredibly welcoming, and so gracious. A true family run restaurant, where the food is clearly cooked with love. Grab a reservation and enjoy this fantastic addition to our community.

Cailin L.

Yelp
Went there last week and the food was so. good. Lately I haven't been too open to trying new foods but I'm so glad I tried this food. We got the meat and vegan platter and I highly reccomend! Our server was very knowledgeable and sweet and this restaurant is new and a family business. One of the meat dishes is homemade and the chef's special recipe so you can't find it anywhere else! The restaurant is cozy and has a nice view of Ardmore to people watch if you would like. This place is truly a hidden gem, I will be back soon.

Dru C.

Yelp
When we made a reservation, we were told they didn't have alcohol, but we could bring our own. When we arrived they told us we couldn't drink our wine. We were also told we had to be finished in an hour and a half for another party. It was an unpleasant experience, I wouldn't recommend it.

Deklan M.

Yelp
Super cute restaurant with delicious food and lovely owners. Will definitely be back!

Carol T.

Yelp
Food, service, and atmosphere was excellent. Be sure you make reservations. If you like Ethiopian food, you will not be disappointed.

Devon E.

Yelp
This new restaurant is owned by the friendliest, kindest family, and everything was SO delicious and authentic. The meat dishes were spicy, but perfectly spicy in my opinion. Can't wait to go back :)

Sparrow's Eye M.

Yelp
Great ambience and service! Delicious food, all of it! Staff was kind and thoughtful.

Yelp
Food is fabulous however using one's hands to eat and no utensils a bit different and difficult

Wai H.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Eshkol and it exceeded our expectations. The staff was incredibly friendly and we were seated right away with our reservation. Our server, Yoni, was outstanding, warm, welcoming and highly knowledgeable about the menu. He provided excellent descriptions and recommendations. We ordered one vegan and one meat platter to sample a variety of dishes, and every bite was a delight. The flavors were vibrant and absolutely delicious. Overall, it was an amazing dining experience and we can't wait to return.

Mike D.

Yelp
An outstanding family business with great care put into every dish. We had the doro watt and the tibs plus a whole bunch of sides. Everything was really delicious.

David K.

Yelp
Food was very good and authentic. The spice combos were amazing. Portions were a bit small but menu was designed to give everyone a chance to experience multiple parts of it without spending a lot of money. Prices were very reasonable. Apps came out quickly but a long delay in the appearance of the entrees. It's family owned and operated. The chef came out to greet us and checked up on our progress. The husband was also involved in multiple aspects of the meal and son was primary server. Very friendly and welcoming. The ambiance was warm. It's a small dining room but tastefully finished it did get a bit loud when it was full at the height of service but we could still talk albeit at a higher level than I'd like. I would definitely go back to experience more of the cuisine.
