A gourmet vacation in Croatia with the MICHELIN Guide: a warm welcome and superb restaurants

"Esplanade Zagreb Hotel is a historic hotel built in 1924 for passengers of the Orient Express. It features Art Deco styling, luxurious amenities, and two notable restaurants: Le Bistro Esplanade and Zinfandel's, the latter of which has been awarded a Michelin Green Star for its focus on sustainability and zero waste." - Annalisa Leopolda Cavaleri

Esplanade Zagreb Hotel

"Built so that passengers on the Oriental Express would have an overnight option in Zagreb, 90 years later its deco glamour is utterly intact and ready to greet guests no matter from where they disembark. Champagne check-ins and classical music render the experience timeless, but room comforts and amenities are firmly in the now."

Hotel Esplanade : legendary hospitality and gourmet dining in Zagreb

"One of the best times to visit the hotel (a member of the exclusive Tablet Hotels Plus group) is over the Christmas holidays, when snow covers the city’s palaces and monuments, reflecting the light from gas lanterns, while dazzling Christmas lights adorn streets, avenues and squares, giving the normally severe and neatly ordered Croatian capital a magical feel." - Matteo Morichini

Esplanade Zagreb Hotel (Zagreb, Croatia) 11 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Surely it won’t be long before the contemporary-design boutique hotels move in to Zagreb, but there’ll never be anything in the Croatian capital to match the historic appeal of the Regent Esplanade. It dates back to the Twenties, to the heyday of the Orient Express, and its Art Deco interiors have been renovated, but not updated — just looking around these rooms (and ignoring the satellite television) you could easily convince yourself it’s still 1924." - Tablet Hotels

Just had a lovely lovely stay at the iconic Esplanade. From check in to check out we had the best service. We had 2 rooms one on the 2nd and one on the 4th floor both huge spacious and luxurious. Welcome note on the desk and digitally on the TV was a nice touch. Delicious chocolate and espresso by Ily complimentary. We dined at zinfandel, Bistro and had drinks at the bar everything we ate was exceptional. Highly recommend a stay here.

A lot of history happened here. The architecture is so beautiful many weddings are done here. Jon The concierge was so pleasant and helpful! The breakfast was not as I expected, the choices were superior in southern Croatia. But the location was perfect. I inquired as to the safety, due to the unbelievable amount of graffiti, coming from LA and the territorial markers, they told me there were no gangs and it was very safe. I did see many women walking alone.

Location was good, 14 minute walk to main square never seemed too far, adjacent underground mall with grocery store was very handy..|Grand old hotel, celebrating 100 years. Impressive lobby, bar and restaurant areas.|Room (superior king) was large, well equipped with desk, armchair, safe, fridge, coffeemaker etc; separate bath and walk in shower; as with many older hotels not many outlets, hairdryer attached to its drawer with a short cord so you had to stick your head in the drawer to dry your hair.|Breakfast (a la carte plus buffet) was excellent in impressive dining room.|Overall good choice, highly recommended.

As an independent travel agent, I’d recommend the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel for its superb location and classic old-school charm reminiscent of the Orient Express. Our room was beautiful, the food delicious, and the hotel bar outstanding – the barman suggested some excellent cocktails. That said, the hotel is a bit dated and could benefit from some updating. Still a memorable stay and a true city landmark.

The Esplanade Zagreb never disappoints. Walking into the grand lobby always sets the tone for a luxurious stay. Cocktails on the terrace surrounded by beautiful historical buildings is a real treat. And no matter where you dine in the hotel - from breakfast, to dinner to room service, the food is fabulous! The Esplanade delivers incredible value for money in comparison to other similar 5-star properties in London, Paris or Florence.

The room itself is large and comfortable with a large bath including both a separate shower and a deep tub. We have a courtyard view making it quiet (I would be concerned about a street view facing the street cars). The rate is reasonable, assuming we are charged the rate that appears on our reservation (see below).||||The staff however put the chilly in cold reception, and not in a "cool" way. From the time we drove up in our rental car, there wasn't a "Welcome to the Hotel Esplanade" or "Is there anything we can do to make your stay more memorable." The 3 clerks at the checkin desk seemed too busy, ivolved in training of some sort, to be bothered with us. (There was no one else checking in a the same time.). We were pointed to one, but no one ever said welcome. We handed over our passports. When they were handed back no one said welcome or thank you Mr; X. (My name is not hard - 2 syllables). I was asked for a credit card (reasonble) and then asked to sign for a credit card charge for 50% more than the rate I had reserved. When I questioned that, I was told something brusquely about a deposit, with no further explanation. We were handed our room keys but not directed to the elevator.||||We are not fussy travelers. But both my wife and I commented on the decidedly chilly reception. Perhaps it was the contrast with Dalmatia where we had just been. But in a supposedly top hotel, one would think that there would be a better initial interaction and first impression.||||In our experience, staff attitude is a matter of training and top-level emphasis. If staff is not going to be guest focused at check in, are they going to be at other times?||||All that said, the next morning the concierge Jan was extremely pleasant and very helpful.||||On a side note, “valet” parking appears to mean that your car is parked in the hotel driveway during the entire stay.

This was a nice hotel for our stay in Zagreb in June 2025. The hotel is a bit dated but we enjoyed the room that was allocated to us. It was comfortable and well appointed. The main reason I gave this 4 star is because the breakfast was just ok. On this particular trip, the breakfast was probably the least enjoyable. My recommendation would be to stay here when in Zagreb but grab breakfast elsewhere.

I went to the Esplanade Hotel to dine at Le Bistrot, but the experience was ruined before I even sat down. When I entered, I left my umbrella at the hotel entrance — like any normal person would— because it was dripping wet and there was no stand or bucket for it. A staff member suddenly followed me through the lobby, confronted me, and told me that “ I cannot just leave it there.”Apparently, dripping water all over their marble floor is more acceptable than placing a closed umbrella neatly by the door. For all I care, they could’ve thrown it into the street, it’s just an umbrella. To make matters worse, I was momentarily confused about the restaurant’s location and accidentally walked into another one inside the hotel. The waiter there looked absolutely miserable, barely acknowledged me, and seemed annoyed that I even asked a question. Not exactly the kind of hospitality you expect from a so called five star hotel. The whole interaction felt unnecessarily rude and pretentious. There’s nothing elegant or luxurious about policing guests over trivial things. The staff act like they’re guarding a palace, when in reality, this kind of behavior just screams tacky provincial snobbery. Ironically, the only truly polite people were at Le Bistrot itself. It’s rather funny to see such entitlement and condescension from people whose daily wage is probably lower than the price of a single dish in the hotel restaurant.
