The room itself is large and comfortable with a large bath including both a separate shower and a deep tub. We have a courtyard view making it quiet (I would be concerned about a street view facing the street cars). The rate is reasonable, assuming we are charged the rate that appears on our reservation (see below).||||The staff however put the chilly in cold reception, and not in a "cool" way. From the time we drove up in our rental car, there wasn't a "Welcome to the Hotel Esplanade" or "Is there anything we can do to make your stay more memorable." The 3 clerks at the checkin desk seemed too busy, ivolved in training of some sort, to be bothered with us. (There was no one else checking in a the same time.). We were pointed to one, but no one ever said welcome. We handed over our passports. When they were handed back no one said welcome or thank you Mr; X. (My name is not hard - 2 syllables). I was asked for a credit card (reasonble) and then asked to sign for a credit card charge for 50% more than the rate I had reserved. When I questioned that, I was told something brusquely about a deposit, with no further explanation. We were handed our room keys but not directed to the elevator.||||We are not fussy travelers. But both my wife and I commented on the decidedly chilly reception. Perhaps it was the contrast with Dalmatia where we had just been. But in a supposedly top hotel, one would think that there would be a better initial interaction and first impression.||||In our experience, staff attitude is a matter of training and top-level emphasis. If staff is not going to be guest focused at check in, are they going to be at other times?||||All that said, the next morning the concierge Jan was extremely pleasant and very helpful.||||On a side note, “valet” parking appears to mean that your car is parked in the hotel driveway during the entire stay.
