On the Grid : Espresso 77

"Husband and wife team — Afzal and Julie opened Espresso 77 in 2010 and it quickly became a part of the collective neighborhood’s daily routine. They offer all the usual variety of coffee beverages in addition to some signature non-caffeine drinks like the super refreshing Honey Mint Limonata. For breakfast they carry pastries from Cannelle’s and for lunch a variety of wraps, salads and sandwiches. In the evenings, enjoy live music and a small but concise selection of beer and wine. This winter E77 will be undergoing an expansion and renovation that will double the seating space, add beer and ice coffee on tap and allow more space to exhibit work from local artists. Yay!" - Diane Shaw

One of the best spots in town! The latte they have is amazing! The place is very clean and the staff are nice and friendly especially the young lady with a scarf who is always smiling all the time.

Nothing like a stroll around the old neighborhood. Service and seating were good. It can get packed here apparently. First time here today after all these years of living here. Or around hehe. Wasn't in the mood for coffee, wanted something refreshing and fruity. I got the 16 oz peach lemonade. Very fairly priced which I was surprised about. It can get overstimulating quickly if you're like me. Glad we got it to go.

Happy Fourth of July 😊 Afzad and his crew are awesome and make every occasion special. Thank you for being there. We love your place 😊😊😊

Google
I really like this neighborhood place . Good coffee & matches they also have a nice food menu . Seating is bit hard to find and tables are very close to each other . If the weather is nice they have few seats outside. It's a cozy place.

Had macchiato here and bought espresso beans. Roast was good with low acidity. Cafe is cute place with variety tea options as well.

I was told I cannot use my laptop at any other table except the long table in the middle. My parents come here often and recommended this place for me to check some emails and just do minor work for a few while visiting NY from FL. I’ve been here once and had no issue. I was here with my family and I was able to do a little bit of work while they were enjoying the evening(this was in April 2025) I came back today June 23 and and decided that I would rather breakfast and check my email while I eat. The lady in the counter told me I can’t use my laptop in those small tables around the wall. She said I needed to go to the middle table. I told can I just sit there for a few minutes while I eat because I needed to plug my laptop because I had no charge. She told me we don’t offer chargers for people. I found this very rude way to answer to your customer. There wasn’t that many people to say oh they need the space. I wasn’t going to stay there the entire day. I’ve been to hundreds of coffee shops and have never been told or treated like this. I had to eat my sandwich and leave to Starbucks which was on 78st. The place is cozy and the food was ok but the attitude was sucks.

Yelp
Cutest cafe! Decorated festive for the holidays. Actual mugs to stay. So cozy. What a gem in queens.

Yelp
Ate here today on a cold Sunday afternoon while taking a walk around my neighborhood. I had brought, drank and ate the hot chocolate and burrata plate that it tasted super good, fresh and delicious. The service there was also attentive, pleasant and friendly. I couldn't agree more. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

Yelp
One of my coworkers had given me a $10 gift card for Christmas and I finally had the opportunity to use it. I ordered a caramel frappe and a brownie. The caramel frappe was so watered down that it tasted like crushed iced with a splash of caramel. The brownie was good but I feel like they could have at least warmed it up. I would expect their drinks to all be good since the word espresso is in their name. Not sure if I would return.

Yelp
I've passed by this little cafe for years now, finally had an opportunity to walk in while meeting up with an old friend! The cafe is a block right off Roosevelt Ave, and nestled into the more residential portion of Jackson Heights. The environment is quiet with everyone's conversations at a low or with their heads buried in their books or laptops. It's a very calm atmosphere. The service was quick and lovely too. I got the chai latte and chicken pesto panini... or should I say two because I ended up splitting the second panini with my friend over how good it was! The chai latte was okay, not particularly anything ground breaking, but I would definitely highly recommend the panini! That being said, I genuinely am surprised at the harsh ratings for this place on Yelp! I was not expecting it from the lovely afternoon I had here! Thank you so much!

Yelp
Delicious and fun coffee options. I got a chocolate latte which was not too sweet (a good thing). The pumpkin snicker noodle cookie was SO good! The service was quick and had a pleasantly cute ambiance for the area. The grilled cheese was simple.

Yelp
Cider. Coffee. Cookies. Panini. Many great options for a snack or meal. It's a pleasant vibe. There's art work on the walls! It is quite attractive for a date or a small group hangout. There's a communal wooden table where you can chill and work on your computer at certain hours. Note: there is a minimum fee to use credit card. It is $7. Bring cash if you just want a coffee or beverage.

Pratik S.

Yelp
Came around since I grew up there. Always been a staple. Really good tuna melt and really good latte. Great service too. Good vibes.
google avatar

Yelp
When wandering Jackson Heights, you need a nice cafe to relax before exploring your next food destination!! This is my go-to cafe because: 1. Who doesn't want hot apple cider in the winter?! 2. All the art is made by local artists which you can purchase!! What a great place to support the community and get latte. My only qualm is that they run out of seats quickly so be prepared to share a table! All in all, definitely coming back again!

Audrey ..

Yelp
Cozy neighborhood coffee shop with outdoor seating displaying local art for sale. Quiche was homemade with crispy crust. Bagel was fresh chewy with plain cream cheese. Large latte embellished with heart coffee art.

Yelp
There's a common thread of getting sandwiches and wraps that first of all arrive warm but badly put together and hard to pick up. Today's wrap took the booby prize, though: Spinach, dates, goat cheese -- I was hoping for flavorful and healthy -- in a thick, inappropriately heavy whole wheat wrap. To add insult to injury, the typical tiny side "salad" (a few greens and a couple of very thin slices of radish, with a balsamic dressing) obviously came from the bottom of a bowl -- limp and soggy, oozing dressing. And the dressing got under that already soggy and heavy wrap. I couldn't pick it up to eat it, and wound up not finishing anything. So if you want coffee or latte, etc., this is a good choice. If you're thirsty, there's a good variety of offerings, and it's nice to support a locally owned and operated business. But if you're hungry, look elsewhere.

Yelp
Been here a few times and I only had their lattes to go cause of the pandemic. They tasted pretty great and Their honey bee latte was my favorite. Today was my first time finally dining in because I just really enjoy my espresso drinks more when I sit down and have it. Maybe it's a visual thing but I'm a firm believer that you eat with your eyes first. So I came here with the intention to do some work on my laptop but they have this weird policy where you can't use your laptop cause it was a weekend day. I know some cafes do that and I'm not exactly sure what the reason is. They did say however that since it wasn't too busy that I could use it on the big shared table. Appreciated it but I needed an outlet since my laptop was dead so I just decided to have my drink and leave, which was unfortunate. Aside from that slight inconvenience, I enjoyed the rest of my experience. I ordered the coconut kiss, which is an espresso with half n half and coconut but in the size of a cortado. I was really craving a quality espresso drink and this satisfied it, which I was surprised cause I didn't expect this in my neighborhood. It was silky smooth (which was the type of drink I was really craving at the moment) with great tasting espresso and coconut working together. Coconut and espresso just work so well together. I'm definitely coming back. Probably not to do work on the weekends which was unfortunate cause I was hoping this could be a new addition to my list of study spots close to me. I'll try to see how it is on the weekdays I don't really like to be rushed when I'm studying at a cafe so let's see. But maybe to just enjoy a drink and chill or catch up with a friend. I consider this one of the best espresso in my neighborhood, but then again the options are limited. I'm glad this is here

Yelp
This place is charming and still a cozy place to get breakfast or a light lunch. I had the Turkey guacamole sandwich without cheese. The salad was light could have been bigger. Nonetheless, a great place to study and catch up with friends and love ones. The service is fast and friendly. Note: don't bring your laptop on Saturday M-F only laptop deal

Pamela ..

Yelp
Great food, friendly servers. Nice ambiance. People of all ages. Has music on weekends and regular art exhibits. Definitely a neighborhood highlight

Yelp
It's time to write a review as it's just ridiculous how bad the drinks are here. Have been going for a good 17 years on and off as the atmosphere keeps me hanging in there, but it's a coffee place with bad coffee(? why even bother then?) , that serves burnt matcha (barista turned it brown, 1000% undrinkable), and a cup full of water for a hot chocolate (where even asked if could have milk) that makes you need to spit it out. We have resigned to only get tea- with a tea bag- or occasional glass of wine. Think they quickly hire anyone without any sort of training (how can you not make HOT CHOCOLATE)- *except the two long-time women who have been there and are good, so try and catch them. Pastries are good. I'm writing this more in hopes for change than to bad-mouth, bc I really want to like this place- it had potential. So the stars are for the people and the pastries; the 'minus stars' are for their drinks and minimum credit card spend (yeah, pretty annoying to be suckered into buying something else you didn't want).
google avatar

Kobsupang R.

Yelp
Espresso 77 is our go-to place for coffee and pastries. I personally don't order any food on the menu any more. I mean it was okay, just not something to rave about. Their pastries on the other hand are always GREAT, as long as you get there early and catch the fresh ones. Chocolate croissants, almond croissants, muffins, ... they are always so good. Loved getting oat latte here as well with a nice latte art + the staff (Hi Pearl & Sylvia!) is always friendly to us -- always nice seeing them there in the morning with a smile on their faces and greeting us and everybody. For some reason, the bananas they sell there are always just right lol Like I would abandon the ones at home and grab one there instead!

Yelp
I remember when this place first opened and was a tiny, cute cafe. Good for them expanding prior to the pandemic and for staying open. I really wanted to start coming here, but its an unwelcoming space that has lost its cute cafe vibe. Cons: -customer service is nonexistent and awkward (smile anyone?) -laptop restrictions are unwelcoming (isn't this a cafe for the neighborhood?) -overpriced cafe food Pros: -espresso is decent -nice outdoor space if you don't mind the weird restrictions

Hanson Q.

Yelp
I was sitting outside drinking my coffee doing work on my computer on a perfect Saturday morning. I was there for about 30 minutes minding my own business when some guy walked up to me on the street (maybe he's a manager) and told me they have a no laptop rule on the weekends due to fear of people sitting there for too long. When I told him that people around me were on their phones and sitting there for longer periods with finished beverages he gave me a disgusted look and seemed to want me to leave. Never coming back again. Never heard of a cafe that doesnt allow laptops. Terrible.
google avatar

Yelp
Love how this is my neighborhood cafe! Their iced cappuccino is happiness in a cup. My son enjoys their chocolate banana shakes while sitting out front. They also serve booze and cute charcuterie boards for days you want to unwind instead of charge up with caffeine. Tons of bakery and brunch items to choose from too. Stop by, you'll be charmed.

Yelp
Love is cafe! I alive yo sitting there with my friend is so comfortable And The food is so good ! restaurant is very nice&clean!

Yelp
A cute little spot with great coffee. I've also been there for some of their live music events, and the music was always great. Now as for some of the other reviews and where folks are complaining about the laptop policy (the best one, 'complaining' because they can't use their laptop while LIVE MUSICIANS are performing and sharing their musical/vocal skills with the customers)... last I heard, this was a coffeeshop/cafe, Not a library. Not an office. Not a WeWork. If you need to work on your laptop, there are countless other place to do that. Say....at your company's actual Office Space? Or at one of the many libraries throughout the city? At one of the countless other coffeeshops that Do allow laptops? At your own private home, where you are the 'rule-maker'? Sheesh. Talk about selfish. Some people here, complaining because a place of business dares to have rules? Do you also complain because they require a shirt and shoes inside their place of business? Whatever happened to people simply reading a book, having a conversation with a friend, or simply contemplating life while enjoying a good cuppa? But No.... some think they should have the right to hog up entire tables, for hours, staring at their glowing devices, and then pretending to be totally unaware when they see others around them looking for an actual table to sit and enjoy their coffee.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
Overpriced, mediocre food, coffee, & drinks. Strict rules about laptop use where the middle table ends up packed with folks huddling, just looking a place outside of home (in this WFH era) to be productive, while the rest of the tables are empty. God forbid you have to charge your laptop for 30 minutes at another table, they'll keep bothering you every 10 minutes. Hope someone opens a better café in Jackson Heights to have some competition here.
google avatar

Zain R.

Yelp
I am just giving this place a five star review because I am LMAO-ing so hard at other people's reviews about the laptop policy. However, I did not go there to go work on a computer. In fact, I can never work in public because I can only surf/read on my computer when I'm in public as opposed to do some number crunching (personal/professional reference) so I usually like to do it at home on my laptop on my comfy couch. I know I am not a New Yorker so I should really be making fun of the other reviews but omg if you already know about the laptop policy then don't give the place such a bad review - just don't go! But I digress. This is such a cute coffee shop. We were in the neighborhood for a late lunch which turned into a walk around the neighborhood. My cousin wanted to show me where they used to live when they first moved to the area and how the place has been seriously gentrified. She could not recognize any of the streets or the shops. Luckily for us, we stumbled upon this hidden gem of a coffee shop. I absolutely adored the ambience inside and the service was super friendly. I could not believe it. Because I wanted something sweet, I decided to opt for a hot chocolate instead of a latte like I normally do. And what a great decision that was! I ended up getting the chocolate kiss and it was an absolutely delicious drink for the 30 something weather. This Texan was definitely in a chocolate splendor. If I am ever in the area, I am definitely going back!
google avatar

Yelp
It's difficult to find a proper coffee here in Jackson height and I am glad Espresso 77 provides proper breakfast and coffee. For the coffee I would not say super impressed. It's good. As for the breakfast the seasoning is a bit light. And the veggie can be fresher. Overall taste is good and light. It's warm when served. The service is good.
google avatar

Adriana T.

Yelp
I would not recommend this place just because of their food- there are so many other great food places in Jackson heights- -Customer service is horrible here. -cashiers actitud is terrible. -you don't feel welcomed. For coffee and tea??? I can go to somewhere else and find a nice smile to start my day!!!
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Been here once, good outdoor space. Good date spot imo. Got an iced Americano, and thought the espresso was pretty good.
google avatar

Alyssa G.

Yelp
Decent coffee and food. Small but cozy and very family friendly. Note that they are screen free on the weekends so you can't be working on your computer tablet.
google avatar

Andres O.

Yelp
SPACE - been coming here for a while and happy they are still open during the restrictions set in place. - heating provided for outdoor seating is a plus! SERVICE - service seems to be consistent but depending on the time of day you, may not get the friendliest of service. COFFEE Stargazer Blend (Organic) - black, good cup, left me wanting more. Espresso 77 Blend - americano, black, on point and well balanced Base Layer - black, not sure how I felt about this cup, didn't give me that warm, fuzzy, I can't believe Im so lucky to be drinking this right now sort of feeling. NOTES - definitely recommend and will be coming back when in the neighborhood. - could be a 5 but something about the service sometimes seems, whats the word, not warm enough.
google avatar

Alina H.

Yelp
Just a wonderful neighborhood establishment with a variety of great tasting treats and coffee. The staff are very friendly and their outdoor seating is the perfect place to catch a quick break during the day or meet a friend for a coffee. Living a block away, its become almost a daily stop.
google avatar

Juan M.

Yelp
I have lived on 77th Street for over two years and I have never visited that place and I see what the reason has been. The staff is very rude. I was running and I decided to grab a cappuccino and a cheeseboard. I was without a t-shirt, so I decided to sit outside. After 30 minutes of sitting, the manager came in front of my table and loudly told me that I should put on a shirt or should I leave the place. Other customers around listened to him; however, they expressed that there was no problem with being shirtless. I told him I didn't know about the dress code for having coffee in an outdoor cafeteria. I had to leave. The worst experience. I will never come back. I do not recommend this place.
google avatar

M E.

Yelp
This place is catered to the elitists of the neighborhood who think they're too good for deli coffee and Starbucks, when in reality all Espresso77 is a poor cafe with a fancy menu and baristas who don't know what they're doing. The cashier/baristas have huge attitude problems and I have yet to come across a decent employee. Their menu seems highly appealing, but their drinks are atrocious and their indifferent employees probably just like mixing random liquids and calling it a day. The owners never improve their food and menu knowing that the yuppies will continue to support them. This cafe will fit your need if you're passing by Jackson Heights and need a place to sit outside with overpriced coffee, but don't go out of your way to try this place.
google avatar

Alison J.

Yelp
Finally got to try their Bavarian pretzels! So good! Will definitely be back for more!
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Well they reopened and it's awesome. They kept the awesome painted Jackson Heights strong mural which is awesome. They also have outdoor table space for about 15 people. I loved their pretzel and cinnamon raisin bagel it was so awesome and soft. Definitely glad to see them open again after some hooligans smashed in their front windows. Definitely get a latte here, it's awesome and will definitely wake you up. I really love their art collection and the poetry nights back when you could be inside the shop. That's on hold for now. Definitely come and check this place out but leave your laptop at home on the weekends ;). They also serve amazing beer and wine too :)
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Found this place during an afternoon walk with friends. Super cute on the outside with all the flowers, thats what caught my attention. I ordered the burrata on toast, it was like drizzled with olive oil and peppercorn? Delicious! Made fresh. Love thats a local small business and they're still open but a friendly, attentive service from the girl taking/bringing out the orders would be nice.

Ed M.

Yelp
When customers closed the door and windows, staff went back and opened them. I go to coffee locations to eat, relax, and talk. I don't go to bundle up shiver and freeze. Not worth going here unless you do take out.
google avatar

Yelp
We made Expresso 77 our oasis for our recent visit with the grandbabes in Queens! It was our source of energy, nutrition and solace after rigorous days and nights on the streets of New York! The coffee, food, snacks and bonhomie revived us day after day, adding sustenance and bright communal vibes to our trip!

D H.

Yelp
A coffee shop that aspires to be Gymboree. Full of screaming children and oblivious parents at all times. Staff members heavily police the use of laptops, but never ask parents to simmer down their children. They earn a star for a decent product, and for being the only successful coffee shop in a ten block radius.

Ann H.

Yelp
This cafe is a mess! They don't go by the hours that are posted online. Every barista makes up their own rules whether you can pay with cash if the total is under $7.00 or if that's the minimum to pay with a card. And the food and drinks are overpriced. The owner needs to understand this is a neighborhood that's still being gentrified, not the west village! And don't get me started with the use of laptops. You're only allow to use it Monday through Friday at a designated table. Now, whenever they have live music during the week, you can't use your laptop. It's ridiculous. They're better off closing and moving to the city since they have so many rules and it's catered to the yuppies. And you're lucky if you get a cool barista. Some of them give poor customer service. You literally don't know what mood they're in depending on the day. Advice to the owner: Train your staff so they can all be on the same page. It reflects poorly on you. Make sure you update the website to not waste people's money and time. This cafe is not ideal for Jackson Heights!

SB M.

Yelp
Food is mediocre. Service is slow. And they push customers away. Definitely finding another place in future
google avatar

Yaniv K.

Yelp
When I moved to Jackson Heights, I used to think this was a place to meet with others and enjoy good coffee. But I don't know what's with the customer service attitude here, it just feels like they are always rude or not in a good mood.

Linda B.

Yelp
We want to compliment the staff here ( Silvia, Celeste and Christopher ) and also Afzal , the owner . They are awesome ! Everyone is friendly , efficient and thoughtful . When we are here we feel like we are in Europe . The environment is very clean and comfortable and spacious and it is artfully decorated with the paintings by the owner . The coffee is delicious and we love the quiches and the wraps !! We will always come back here .
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Great neighborhood cafe. Bagels are from Bagel House and SO good! They have assorted baked goods as well as light dishes. Wine and beer and music in the evenings. Some outdoor seating. Great staff who took care through pandemic. Local art displayed. Nice to support this small, local family-run business.
google avatar

Emilianna O.

Yelp
Order drinks in person, because when you order a 12 ounce latte online, they only fill it up to three quarters of the cup. Or CHECK how far they fill it up BEFORE leaving the establishment. It is quite a gamble for them to send a customer a partially filled cup knowing they probably won't unwrap and open their order. Their pastries are purchased from other bakeries and cafes who know how to make them, so expect a markup. But I do applaud their no laptop policy, it is a small cafe, not your personal office space. Customers should have space to eat and drink, not wait for your digital nomad wannabe ass to hoard up seating.

Nila D.

Yelp
Poor customer service. Walked up to the register, there was a server/barista with 'blond' hair approaching the register, I was making eye contact and said hi... no respond, she was busy inputting data in the computer. Thinking she had difficulty logging in I waited. Once she was done she just left, no acknowledgement, nothing.... Just silence. I didn't have the chance to review their coffee I was so put off of by the lack of acknowledgment from staff. Will not return!!!
google avatar

Talia J.

Yelp
$11.50 + tax + tip for a large pretzel displayed along with the cookies and pastries. I was flabbergasted. Still in shock, I paid. Never again.
google avatar

Yelp
Came by for some after dinner coffe, their staff is super friendly, their prices are a little better than other coffe places but not by a lot. They have both to go cups and ceramic mugs, however u must ask for the mugs otherwide the dedault is paper cups. We noticed that most drinks already come with sugar added so make sure to ask before ordering, speciallg if u are watching your figure. Adound 9pm on wednesday was prerty empty and we had plabty tables to choose from. In my opinion the lighting was a little too bright and they could have it a little lower. They showcase pictures and part from neighbor artists which is pretty cool. The music is good and feel like an energing hipster spot. They have live music on weekends, that could be something ti check it out. They also serve some light meals and have beer and wine.

Yelp
If you're looking for a 'cute' coffee shop, Espresso 77 would fall under that category.. but it didn't satisfy by 'cute morning coffee walk' at all. The inside is pretty dull, dark colors, not very welcoming. The barista took our orders and told us to wait outside, granted it's covid precaution.. but her tone was not it. My boyfriend and I just looked at each other and proceed to walk outside. My match latte was not even hot, it was warm. My bf ordered a cappuccino and he said he had better. Honestly Starbucks is around the block, so I'd just suggest to go there because better quality and friendly staff.

Yelp
My favorite cafe in Jackson heights. Not many options here. Very clean and cozy place. Good energy. Lots of good art on the walls, fresh flowers and comfortable chairs. Quite side street in busy area with nice outdoor shaded space. Good manu. Smoothies, sandwiches, salads, pastry. Good service, price and atmosphere. Good space if you need to bring your laptop and work.
google avatar

Yelp
$4.75 for a chocolate scone. That is tough. Coffee is meh . Nice atmosphere and ham and cheese croissant.. just always left wanting more..

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were super excited to find a café that wasn't Starbucks and had options with alternative milks in the area. Walked in, very cozy atmosphere. Unfortunately, service wasn't the best. We weren't greeted as we entered (and it was slow). The cashier/barista got an attitude because I changed the size of my coffee. I saw she picked up a small cup and I changed my mind and just wanted a bigger size. As I noticed the attitude, I said "thank you for being so kind," she then smiled. I'm sure she noticed the attitude was not necessary at that point. Other than that coffee was good. High prices and pastries were cold.
