A College Student’s Guide to Campus Dining at the University of Oregon - Eater Portland

"Espresso Roma is a staple coffee spot for U of O students, offering items like hazelnut mocha and chocolate croissant. The outdoor courtyard is a great place to enjoy a nice breeze while studying." - Meaghan FitzPatrick

Well it’s one of those places that you’d probably hate but you keep going back to! The environment is very cozy and nice, beautiful artwork on the walls, but man o man.. there were egg shells on the floor, total messy counter.. half of the time some one would call: “Some thing something latte” and well you have to guess that is yours:/ we ordered 4 drinks one of which we got what we ordered for, rest were missing some thing! Though staff were super nice and friendly! I got a hot chocolate for my Mexican mocha😁 and the guy was like no no let me fix it and added a shot of espresso in there, and said does it taste cinnamon or did we forget that?🤣 the cherry danish was super awesome though! Cleanness: not so much! Service: nope Food: good People: nice Access: walking mostly

Love this place! It’s the best coffee shop near campus, with plenty of space for chatting, studying, and relaxing. They’ve got a wide variety of cheap drinks and pastries-I always go for their croissant sandwiches! The workers are all friendly and talkative, and it’s a great place to go if you’re practicing your Spanish. Highly recommend for anyone needing a quick coffee or a study space.

I come here often to study! The drinks are always great. I especially like the matchai and mango smoothie. The paninis are also really delicious.

Enticed by the pictures of the pastry case and word of good coffee, my partner and I went to this chaotic area near campus. Parking near here is an absolute nightmare, especially due to the construction going on around here, but was able to secure a spot, pay for parking and make our way for the first and last time to this establishment. The service was great... fast and friendly. The coffee was meh. I got a Mango pastry of some kind... it looked great and was really looking forward to it... sadly I think it had been sitting there for days and was the driest, most devoid of flavor pastry I think I've ever had a couple bites of before throwing it away. I don't recommend this place for food or drink.

Google
Super nice little coffee spot on campus. Especially love the quaint little courtyard which is perfect for studying or chatting with friends. The atmosphere is very calming and down to earth. The coffee and fresh made pastries are pretty good in my experience, and the price point is very competitive for the area, which is another plus. They have a good variety of pastries including seasonal fruits, and I actually saw the baker carrying fresh bread and pastries from the kitchen to the front of house. Overall, this place is adorable, well priced, and most importantly friendly and welcoming. I would recommend it if you're looking for coffee and a place to relax in the area.

Google
Great spot, love the food, the coffee, the vibe. Giving 1 star for atmosphere because the tree in back has a dead/dying limb that might take someone out someday

Google
This is not a croissant. Definitely nothing like a traditional pain au chocolat, if that’s what it’s supposed to be. It’s not even pastry—it’s just bread.

Google
Great Cafe! Ton of yummy pastries and sandwiches. Really good espresso. Great price. Ton of seats. Restrooms are available. We like matcha latte here a lot. Must try!

Yelp
I came here on a whim after realizing I hadn't been in years. (It used to be a favorite study spot many years ago!) I got an iced machta with oat milk and it was great--creamy ane sweet (a tiny bit too sweet for my preference but I still enjoyed it.) The barista was friendly and my drink came out quickly. This place has a large amount of seating (tables and couches), and a decent selection of food and drinks. If you're looking for a funky, laid-backs pot to study or grab a bite, this is a great place.

Yelp
Very good coffee drinks but weak tea drinks. Nice selection of cold or hot coffees. I had cold latte with an extra shot of espresso made with oat milk and it was very good. My partner had a cold tea with pomegranate which was tasteless with a faint flavor of pomegranate (they use Italian soda syrup to flavor but the drink did not taste like tea nor was it any hint of sweetness). The cold matcha latte was good and more on the sweet side. Very close to the U of O campus and conveniently located. Glad place for people to hang out and chat or study but be sure to purchase something to support the business.

Yelp
i was excited about a coffee shop so close to campus, but i will not be coming back here. pros: - large place - lots of rooms, lots of tables, perfect for working/studying. - lots of food/drink options - smoothies, coffees, bagels, croissant sandwiches, paninis. cons: - terrible service. the employees acted like i was bothering them when i asked about the wifi password and if there were any vegan pastries, when there was no one in line. - the pastries did not look fresh, there were multiple flies on them, and the workers did not seem to care. - overall just kind of dirty? it is hard to focus on your work when there is a fly constantly landing on your leg. there was trash from past customers on the ground, and again, the workers did not seem to care.

Yelp
nice open coffee shop, i like the wall color. nice plants, sweet barista, good decor. nice music playing in there. the match was sweet, pretty good but a little too milky. a cool coffee shop to grab a bite or study at.

Yelp
The Back Porch area is a great place to sit and relax. They used to allow smoking. Lots of characters from around Eugene pass through there. Maybe less so now.

Yelp
Prices not what were listed, coffee so bad I had to throw it out. Used to be the best coffee in town!

Yelp
I'm a cat owner that frequently takes my cat out on her harness. I am well aware of pet policies as both a pet owner and a food service worker. I have been to plenty of cafes that treat me with the same respect you would with your typical dog owner, however yesterday morning as I walked into Espresso Roma I was confronted with a worker that had the worst attitude towards the sight of my cat. The first thing that this woman says is that she can't be in the cafe. I'm well aware of that, and so I proceed to say that I will just be ordering a to go drink anyway. She continues to insist and mentions that this is the only time my cat can be in the cafe. As soon as I heard that I felt discriminated towards for being a cat owner, so I ask her if she treats dog owners in the same way. Her response, dog owners usually sit outside. My response, do you treat them in the same way you're treating me? I still have to order my drink before I can go outside. Her response, I'm not sure why you're questioning our policy, it is a health violation. By the end of this confrontation I am tired of her attitude and disrespect, so I just let her know that I'm not ordering a coffee anymore and just leave. I understand policies, I understand health codes, I understand. My issue is that if she's trying to argue that my cat may sneeze, shed a hair, or anything else that might somehow contaminate food/drinks within the short amount of time I'd have been in there to get a TO GO drink, then that must apply to any other pet owner. Right? I think the biggest thing is that she was contradicting herself. I follow Roma on instagram, I've seen them post pictures of dogs in their cafe. Clearly they took the time out of their day to stop, take a picture of this dog, and post it. While dogs get admired and welcomed into their space, I get rudely yelled at. The worse thing is, I live above them. Now I can't have easy access to mediocre coffee. I guess that's a blessing in disguise.

Yelp
Espresso Roma is a great little spot. I came here for the first time a few days ago and immediately wanted to come again. The service is great. Food and drinks are made super quick and employees are friendly. This cafe is really good for studying and getting some work done, especially for busy college students like myself. There's a ton of seating, indoor and outdoor, as well as free WiFi. The coffee is delicious, not bitter at all and their scones are some of the best I have ever had, not to mention they are the size and weight of a softball. They have a nice food menu as well.

Yelp
espresso roma... i wouldnt have done this but you pushed me to my last straw. i just wanted a TASTY TOASTED WARM BAGEL with cream cheese and i get this. THIS. (see photo below) i didnt even know another human could be capable of committing something like this.. how cruel do you have to be to do this to another human? some little word of advice espresso roma, next time toast your bagels and melt your cream cheese a little bit before serving it to a desperate patron like myself. also i knew i was in for trouble when the barista gave me coffee from a drink cooler. if i order a coffee i wanna see you put your back into it and turn on the damn espresso machine! isnt that in your name! out of protest from this abomination i will not be coming back. for awhile.. until i get desperate enough again. p.s. your cups leak all over and make me look like i dont know how to drink something without dribbling on myself

Yelp
This has been my coffee place for years. The coffee was always rich and dark roasted. Lattes were excellent. NOT ANYMORE! Be warned, the lattes are nowhere near what they were. Neither are the muffins which tasted day old. I'm so bummed!!! Please bring back the guys who made good coffee! And the managers who cared about the quality we all expected!
google avatar

Yelp
The coffee latte tasted like it was pulled with burnt coffee beans. Yuck. This is not the barista's fault. She was friendly and smiling. The almond croissant was ok in texture (a little oily) but tasty. Would not go back.

Paul S.

Yelp
I had a complicated order and Becca made sure everything was perfect! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Roma is such a great local coffee spot to get a drink, eat a tasty pastry, and stick around to get some work done or catch up with a friend. I really love their chai lattes and their chocolate chip cookies in particular. The staff is also always so nice and fun! A real Eugene staple

Yelp
An absolute MUST try local coffee spot!!! Their espresso is SOO DELICIOUS ! Their pastries are fresh as well! Oh my lanta! My favorite part is their charming patio!!

Yelp
I've been coming here my entire adult life and always enjoyed the campus ambience. Nowadays I only come when I'm in town visiting family, but after today I'm not coming back. My mom ordered a latte and a hot chocolate from a young female employee who did not understand that she was trying to order two things, she had to repeat herself several times to get the order correct. She was very rude to my mom, who went out of her way to be nice to this employee even as she kept messing up her order. When I tried the hot chocolate it tasted like barely warmed up milk, really disgusting. I went back to the employee and told her it tasted like it was barely warmed up milk, that I had loved it the last time I'd been here. She said, "Yeah, it's milk." Huh? I told her I ordered hot chocolate. She said they made it with milk. Major communication problem. I made it clear I didn't like the drink and no offer was made to remake the drink or give a refund. She just smirked at me like an unrepentant child. I went back to my table and did not finish the drink as I wasn't in the mood for warmed over milk. It doesn't seem to matter how terrible the drinks and food are at this place, how filthy the environs, or how atrocious the service, it stays open. I used to be grateful that it did after the closing of Starbucks -- it was a nice little taste of nostalgia for my college days. But that's the only thing that tastes good here. This place has worn out its welcome in this erstwhile patron's heart. Save your money and get a drink at the Dairy Queen across the street.

Yelp
Super popular with students, we stopped in for paninis and coffee while checking out the campus. Great chicken panini, salad and coffees. A real student vibe, it's not trendy or fancy at all but a local favorite. Reminds us of similar somewhat funky places around UC Berkeley!
google avatar

Makenzie Y.

Yelp
I added a picture to my review of the Vampire Juice. I think that Espresso Roma has the best juice in town hands down! The Vampire Juice is my fave!

Mandy B.

Yelp
Great place for lunch! The value is fantastic! Their food is so delicious and satisfying and grabbing a pastry is A MUST! Wow!! Their pastries are the best in town.
google avatar

Leah A.

Yelp
The reason for my harsh review for Espresso Roma has to do with cleanliness. The bare minimum that a food service business should offer is clean and safe food/beverages for consumption. However, I found a full fly in my orange juice. If that was the only incident, I would have been more gracious. But while ordering I could clearly see multiple flys and insects swarming around in the glass case with open sandwiches and pastries. I do not suggest coming here, unless you don't mind the extra protein in your drinks or food.

Yelp
Espresso Roma is a classic Eugene study spot, and for good reason. They're located right next to campus and are one of the biggest cafes we have, with tons of indoor seating and a cute backyard patio with seating. I find the drinks to be cheap for what you're getting, and they have a huge menu with some exotic and adventurous options! I've tried their smoothies, red bull italian sodas, coffees and teas and have loved it all. The staff is so friendly and I can always find a comfortable place to study and get some work done here. I love Espresso Roma!!
google avatar

Yelp
Above average coffee quick service good tunes. Espresso roma isn't gonna knock your socks off but they will do their job and do it well. Great spot to spend your time in between class to caffeinate and get some work done. Been a frequent customer here since I started attending the UO and I will continue being a customer until I graduate

Yelp
Awesome coffee. I got a hazelnut mocha and raspberry mocha, both taste amazing. Too bad the chocolate croissant sold out, would like to try it next time.

katleya c.

Yelp
disappointed. the food looked days old and tasted bland and gross. my friend got an almond milk matcha that tasted nothing like matcha. very over priced and had bad service. the only redeeming thing is the cute environment. :\

Yelp
Everything I want in a coffee shop. The space is huge, which leds to a multitude a seating options to fit any type of vibe you're trying to achieve. You want to come get a coffee and a pastry and study before your morning class? Roma has the vibe. You want to meet a friend and get a smoothie and panini for lunch? Roma is the place to go. You want to chill and enjoy the sun with an iced latte? Roma has a great backyard outdoor space for that. Ive been here alone, with friends, old and new, and I've never had a bad experience. As I've stated, a huge part of this is due to the place. Another aspect is the music, which I thoroughly enjoy each visit. One of the biggest aspects is the service. The vibe at the counter is very get up and go, which I appreciate due to the line that can sometimes get quite long. My recommendation is to get the turkey and cheese croissant, an 8 oz house coffee (trust me it's caffeinated enough), and go sit at a table under one of the many quality local art pieces featured on the wall. Look around, and you'll see college students, professors, people on break from their job, and everything in between. This is truly a Eugene establishment.

Yelp
If you crave really good coffee - nothing less - then Espresso Roma is your place. Not only is the coffee fresh and amazing, but the pastries are to die for too. College types spend hours here working. Its worth the stop, go great great coffee!

Yelp
I was excited to try this place as it seems like a local hub -- people known by their orders and treated well. The cashier/barista was kind and efficient and the portions are huge! Truly generous. The pastry display is lovely and enticing. My cafe au lait was fine and my husband's tea was nice. The major problem? My scone had worms living in it. I'm not kidding. I tore it open, had a bite and thought it tasted funny, so I left it on my plate thinking I'd toss it in a bit. No need to complain because you never know if it's a difference in recipe or preference. Next time I looked over, all these little worms were emerging from the middle of the scone, squirming around. We took it up and they replaced it with one they swore was baked fresh. Now I was nervous, so I tore it open and left it out to get my nerve up to try it. Few minutes late, I reached over to try it and there were worms wriggling around. Super sad and definitely disturbing. Hopefully they get a new supply chain! Really nice people!

Evan S.

Yelp
walked in to a swarm of flies, coffee tastes horrible for a price point comparable to much better alternatives within a few blocks, barista was rude, bathrooms are broken and don't flush, the place is run down, do not go here
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
A comfortable place to get a coffee and baked good. Usually a quiet atmosphere to get some work or studying done. Their back courtyard is open-air and peaceful.
google avatar

Indroneil B.

Yelp
One of the finest coffee houses in Eugene. Good staff. A wonderful place for a date, study break or a get together.

Arica N.

Yelp
Cute place with chill vibes. Loved the service and the people! Great place to relax if you are trying to get busy work done.

Hannah R.

Yelp
I have loved this coffee spot in the past but I probably won't be back after my experience this morning. The employee seemed annoyed that we were there and that I asked if they had gluten free food options. I ordered a chai, specifically with oat milk as I am lactose intolerant, and he handed me a premixed chai that had been sitting out on the counter that definitely had milk in it and barely tasted like there was any chai in it at all. When I asked if he could make it with more chai and oat milk he pulled out a box and splashed some more on top of my drink without saying anything. My girlfriend ordered a mocha, a drink traditionally made with espresso, though this was from a premade mix of iced coffee and milk. I also could see him standing on his phone in the back and then immediately handling food without gloves or washing his hands. There was also a singular agressive spanish trap song playing on blast and on repeat for the entire time we were in there, not the 7 am morning vibes at all. I was excited to spend a nice morning with my partner at a coffee shop and the vibes were so awful we left almost immediately. I usually understand employees having an off day but this experience went too far.

Yelp
First pick over Starbucks every time now!!! Being right next to Starbucks and several other little eateries on campus, Expresso Roma is in the perfect place to study or grab a quick bite to eat before class. The people behind the pastries are sweat, and skilled in crafting coffee concoctions. Shout out to Sergio he's a bro!

Charles D.

Yelp
A bitter roast. Makes me think maybe the beans have been exposed to a bit more oxygen than they should have? Oxygen exposure is what makes coffee develop that bitter truck stop coffee flavor. The atmosphere is sort of gritty urban decay. A nice baked goods selection. Staff is benignly indifferent.
google avatar

Kathleen D.

Yelp
I assume this is a great study spot for students, considering how many of 'em were camped out with their laptops when my friend and I stopped in for pick-me-ups one afternoon earlier this month. I would've liked to have had a place like this in college! It seemed like a good place for studying in public with an overall lack of distractions, with the exception of street noise and just a few people chatting at tables. The cafe itself is plain and has simple offerings. I had a mocha and it was okay. Not anywhere close to my favorite mocha, but it was cheap and hot. Maybe it was just that particular drink. If I lived in the area and had some work to get done, I'd give them a second try.
google avatar

Kristine X.

Yelp
Not impressed with this hot americano. It was served to me in a pint glass meant for a cold drink with a hot drink sleeve. Get some more hot cups and skip the single use hot drink sleeve! Also why does a medium americano cost more than a small? There's no difference other than an inch of hot water.

Yelp
This has become one of my favorite coffee shops, not only around the UO campus, but in Eugene in general. Staff: Cool af and they habla español. I clearly don't, but if you do, they seem really friendly to chat with you, regardless of fluency level. (Also friendly and will chat in English, to clarify. As stated above: the staff are cool af.) I try to say thanks in Spanish but my accent sucks and I am embarrassed. Food: always delicious and reasonably priced. I've yet to meet a pastry from their case that I haven't liked. Whether sweet or savory, everything is huge, lovely looking, and delicious. Their cream cheese pastry thingy easily bests Starbucks' version, in size, flavor, and freshness. Probably also price, though I haven't done a price comparison. Coffee/espresso: I'm a broke ass college student, so I stick to house coffee and can't vouch for the rest of their beverages. What I can say is this: 1. Drinks are all super affordable here. 2. Their house coffee is actually good and definitely well caffeinated. I normally hate house coffee and get americanos everywhere else and disguise the flavor by adding embarrassing amounts of splenda or stevia, when available, and creamer. Not here! I add a [heaping] teaspoon of brown sugar, and a big dash of cinnamon, and cream. Freaking delicious and even a small (8oz) cup is usually plenty to get me going! Ambience, etc: Can usually hear classical music playing overhead. Tons of seating in a sprawling layout. Plenty of spots to plug devices in, and free wifi. Tables and chairs are generic. The place is obviously frequented and loved by regulars who are often greeted upon arrival. Here's what you won't find here: Coffee snobbery, pretentious decor, corporate vibes, and/or white ladies screeching at the manager. (I mean, I'm white, but I try to keep my screeching under wraps.) I come here often, but forget to check in. Wanted to write a review in support of a great local business.
google avatar

Lolo A.

Yelp
Staff here is so sweet! But the coffee and pastries are not the best that is available in the area. Place always seems a little dirty too and in a pandemic cleanliness is everyone's bestfriend.
google avatar

Abigail F.

Yelp
Another quiet, caffeinated place to work! If I were rating this on the quality of food alone, I might give it 4 or even 3 stars for food that's solid and satisfying but not top-notch patisserie like Noisette or Hideaway. What I love about the place, though, is the affordability, especially for the quantity of food, and the spacious covered patio which also boasts some laptop outlets (book-writing nirvana). Pastries are the hugest I think I've ever seen (bring your appetite and/or a friend to split one). Coffee is tasty, if not my favorite coffee in the area. And the atmosphere is relaxed, quiet, clean, and there are several different rooms to choose from. I hear it's a family owned place and it's been around forever, so that makes me like it even more.
google avatar

Cal M.

Yelp
I had the blended Oreo coffee and the mango tea smoothie. Both tastes very good but had some big pieces of ice.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to come get coffee and study with friends! The service is amazing as well. Sergio especially has the best stories and makes amazing coffee!! I would choose their coffee over Starbucks any day. Thank you Sergio and the rest of the team for proving an amazing service. :)

Bob R.

Yelp
Love this place. Human, quick, and they were patient with old people who had to reorganize their wallets back from front to back and put all their one dollar bills with the President facing the same way before stepping a foot from the register. Good coffee, easy attitude.
google avatar

Jess N.

Yelp
I want to like Roma more! I really do, it's the local place with okay food and a nice staff but it's got to fix its coffee problem. It's just not good. The beans taste over roasted. Its below average coffee for the price I can get good coffee at other places for. I like a good cup of rich black coffee, or espresso and it just can't be had here. Usually I get tea when I have to go here for meetings. The food is good though, and the staff is always friendly.
google avatar

Savannah D.

Yelp
Coffee is amazing! I always pick locally-owned coffee over the big names right next to them like Starbucks or going to the EMU. The coffee taste great and is fairly priced. But avoid the food at ALL COST! I have tried multiple times to have their food and I can never finish it. I had a scone so stale you could not bite into it because it was rock solid. My friend got a croissant sandwich and the spinach was extremely slimy and the cheese tasted rotten. Every time I've gotten their food its been borderline hazardous its so stale. I'll stick to getting their coffee but the food is extremely off-putting.
google avatar

Desirae N.

Yelp
Oh man. I really wanted to like this place. It was a fail from the get-go. Anytime I see my iced latte being made from PRE-PULLED espresso shots from a pitcher, it's just downhill from there. After sort of arguing with the barista that you can, in fact, make an iced latte with freshly pulled shots, and explaining to him HOW, I took my two iced "lattes" and left. I tried it on my walk and just about spit it out. I couldn't even bring myself to offer the other latte to my relative and threw them both in the trash. They were not just terrible, they were SO terrible, I didn't want to punish myself with another sip. Some people just shouldn't be in the coffee making business. I absolutely despise Starbucks, but I'm pretty sure that would have been a better option. I really wish Eugene had better espresso options.
google avatar

Scott D.

Yelp
I'm so happy that after 20 years I moved back to Eugene and found my favorite University coffee house still here; even with a big Starbucks next door! Now I can sit , enjoy a coffee, and flip off the neighbor's customers all at once. ROMA! ROMA! ...
google avatar

LadyHonesty J.

Yelp
I love Espresso Roma's quaint atmosphere on campus. It's like something out of a movie and sends you back in history a bit. I really enjoy the variety to their pastries and drinks, though I am not at all a coffee fan!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
I like to grab a hot tea and a table here to study in the mornings. Service is quick, and after only 2 or 3 visits, they already knew my order. The place is no frills, some of the chairs are worn and the tables are rickety, and the bathroom is sketchy, but the drinks are large and made quickly. I had a rather disappointing chocolate chip cookie one time (not much flavor or sweetness, chocolate was tasteless which makes me think it was made with artificial chocolate morsels) but the next visit, I got a blackberry oatmeal muffin and it was outstanding! Like, make me get teary and say a silent prayer, outstanding. For that, the quick service, good prices, and hardworking staff, it's gotta be 5 stars from me.
google avatar

Benjamin F.

Yelp
I would like to love the place, I really would. Customer service is great, coffee is decent, and the pastries/food are fast and tasty. Unfortunately the place has a tendency to charge you twice for your food. This happened to me a while back, so I stopped going for the longest time. I went back today and gave them another chance and once again, they charged me twice for a coffee and a croissant (which was supposed to be a bagel but they got my order wrong). I definitely won't be back seeming as though they like to cheat customers out of their money.
google avatar

Marcus A.

Yelp
I don't ever come here for the food but the coffee is absolutely amazing- especially their espressos. Get a medium or a large, you won't regret it or feel jittery. Smooth, rich and robust. An absolute treat for grabbing in between classes. Can't wait to sit in the back patio once public dining is permissible again! Rustic and homey.
