Where to Eat the Best Arepas in Dallas - Eater Dallas

"This Colombian coffee bar serves up killer Venezuelan-style arepas—but only at the Baylor University Medical Center location on Gaston Avenue. Be sure to try the arepa vegetariana (filled with queso fresco, avocado and fried sweet plantains). Served with a sour cream and jalapeño salsa, it’s a perfect trifecta of sweet, salty, and creamy. Note: Parking anywhere near Espumoso is extremely difficult, but the food is more than worth the stress." - W. Trace Miller

Google
It is a little difficult to access through the parking lot if you are passing through since it is located in an area where students or doctors, etc. are allowed. You cannot find it by name or address since it is located at 130. The empanadas and sauces are good and the price is good because they are very tasty.

Spicy Cali Roll

Google
One of the best coffee shops in Dallas in my opinion. Very low key so you really have to know it’s there but they have a big menu and all of the food is fresh; I always get the parfait and breakfast tacos and they always have fresh salsa

Hannah Arcentales

Google
I look forward to eating here afterwards after I go to the doctor. The empanadas and salsas are so good! Highly recommend if you’re stopping by the area or at the hospital/doctor.

Google
Amazing spot for cold or hot coffee. Amazing Cuban coffee and they do have frappes!! I had the double Cuban coffee with an extra shot making that 3 and it was flavored perfectly!! Super friendly service and fast also they have breakfast Menüs pastry 🥐 and empanadas and more

Amparo Reyes

Google
The chicken and cheese empanadas are bomb! So tasty and very light, not drenched in oil. Their green salsa is my favorite. They give you two salsas to go with your empanada or breakfast bowl (also bomb btw) a red & green salsa, but I always swap out my red salsa for another green, it’s that good. Their hot chocolate & white chocolate mocha are very tasty. I highly recommend this place!!

Google
🥳 What a pleasant surprise! 🥟 Veggie Empanada 💯 ☕ Cuban coffee is bomb (bit sweet)💣💥 🥣 Acai bowl was pretty legit too 🍧 🌄 Breakfast menu before 11am 📰 Decent amount of seating (mostly indoors) - a couple outside tables. I can't wait to try their breakfast & seasonal empanadas next time

Google
Espumoso has the best Empanadas in Dallas hands down! I first discovered them in bishop arts but found out they have a location at Baylor (much closer to my office!) the location is not ideal as parking is a hassle. You have to park on the 2nd level of the garage and take a ticket and you only have so long before you’re charged to park. However, it’s worth it. Their beef and potato Empanadas are the best and they have a killer iced chai! Also, ask for extra salsa, you are going to want it!

Google
Best arepas I have had in Texas. Good empanadas too, the coffee is amazing as well. I haven’t tried the pastries but everything I have had is delicious. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Excellent meal and very friendly staff. I arrived five minutes before they closed and all the empanadas had been wrapped for the day. They graciously took time to explain the menu, although closing they said they had clean up and I was welcome to sit inside for meal rather than feel rushed out into the heat. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Located across the street from Baylor Med Center, this is a great breakfast or lunch option during the week. My first visit, I tried the bean and cheese arepa and a beef/Potato empanada. That was a lot of food. My second visit, I went with the beef/potato empanada and a chicken and cheese empanada. This was a more reasonable amount of food for lunch. Both times the beef and potato empanada was stellar, so well seasoned. The other items I tried were also delicious but they just couldn't beat that empanada. The menu has plenty of options for any type of eater. My mom doesn't eat meat or cheese but really enjoyed the vegetarian empanada.

Yelp
Great empanadas for a quick snack! Coffee is good just on the sweeter end. Tacos and burritos are great and super filling. Theres tons of seating inside even during the lunch rush. Super convenient location if you are at the Baylor Med Center area.

Yelp
Soo good the beef and potato empanada was my favorite with the green sauce also got pabellon arepa and it was good but the real banger was the empanadas

Yelp
Great food and very nice people! Had the Adobo Chicken Burrito which was great and the Chicken Quesadillas are great too! Very fast Service and an easy walk from the hospital or hotel!

Yelp
Great atmosphere and the most delicious veggie empanada. The crème sauce was lick-the-bowl good. The latte had great flavor and was perfect strength. Definitely worth the visit. The staff were all smiles and very fast!

Yelp
Had this place on my list for a while and it didn't disappoint! What a great quick spot for a Hispanic munch and fantastic coffee drinks. We tried an assortment of their food (sandwich, empanadas, and arepas) and have to say the sandwiches and empanadas battled for the top spot. Their Dulce de Leche coffee was unique and flavorful as well with a great balance of coffee notes and sweetness. The ambiance was unexpected for it being in a medical district - definitely an easy stop and go spot I can see many people enjoying. If I worked in the area I would have a hard time not coming here every time for lunch. The only reason it loses one star for me is because you do have to search around for parking or use the paid parking garage.

Yelp
This was my second visit. NOTE- I ordered thru the Ritual app. Push notifications were turned on. No alert when order was ready. Order was missing one empanada order. Employee apologized. The Ritual app is offering a $2 credit but it didn't apply. Aside from those points, the food and drink order were tasty. They have rojo salsa and cilantro salsa, if interested. Venue is kept clean. Masks are not enforced. Many patrons wore them, I imagine, due to proximity to Baylor. They made a fresh veggie empanada to order. To be fair, one order is pretty size-able. They play pop music overhead. It didn't get in the way of working via laptop. Wifi is available, as well. Plenty of space to work. Booths have wall outlets. Location by Baylor Hospital and ATM School of Dentistry. Street meter parking available via ParkMobile app. Also, garage for Baylor discounted with validation. A great place to beast mode and/or kill time in between appointments.

Yelp
I was introduced to this cafe by a coworker. Was pleasantly pleased at first. The gentleman was very punctual and kind. I have come back numerous times when I am in the area and even introduced others. After today I will not be returning. The past couple of times the lady working the register has become so rude and nasty it makes you not want to patronize this business. I ordered street tacos there was absolutely no flavor and a waste of money and my lunchtime. I also witnessed her act the same with other customers as I sat there and waited. I hope this helps fix the professionalism for the next guest. But I will not be back.

Yelp
Loved this place! Tried it for lunch for the first time today. The empanada is not greasy and it has perfect flaky outsides with the cheesiest gooey ham oozing out. Yum! The arepa is surprising with so much flavor! It was the perfect salty and sweet combo with the plantains inside of it. The green "jalapeño salsa" is amazing! My main complaint is I didn't get enough of it. Also not crazy about the location as it's tough to get too with no easy parking but luckily working across at Baylor helps! Will for sure come back to try even more coffees and food!

Yelp
the best empanadas i've ever had!!! highly recommended!!! food, customer service, and atmosphere are all awesome sauce wrapped in love with each bite! check them out now!!!

Yelp
Great coffee!! Recommend Cafe con Leche. Super friendly workers. Was a little disappointed with the "real fruit" parfait, to me, wasn't fresh fruit but the yogurt and granolas were good!
google avatar

Yelp
I got the veggie empanadas and they were sooo GOOD, especially when you add their sauce on it, even better! The size and stuffing were perfect and fulfilling. The crust was the part for me. I am not sure how many I got of those but I have ordered from this more than 5 times through Uber Eats and every time, its so delicious. I did not notice they had this name of the cafe on the crust which was cute and personal. Love this cafe so much.

Yelp
I come here a lot since I'm at the dental school across the street. It's a great place to get work done! Food: empanadas are really good! I like the beef and potato one with the green sauce. The lattes are great too, my favorite is the one with the honey. Atmosphere: hip but not try hard. Good music selection: chill enough to still get work done. Comfy couch too! The service is always good too. I wish this place was open on weekends but I understand with the location why it's not. One of my favorite coffee places in Dallas!

Yelp
It's a darned good thing that I did not make it to this spot before moving to Fort Worth because I probably would have gained 50 pounds by going here every day. Years ago when I lived in NYC, I fell in love with arepas. When I moved back to TX, I couldn't find anyone that made them the way I enjoyed them in NYC. Well, my search for a delicious arepa is over! After visiting my doctor (please don't tell her I ate arepas, etc after getting my clean bill of health), I stopped off for a snack. I ordered the La vegetariana arepa which comes stuffed with sliced avocado, queso fresco, and plantains. It's also served with a delicious cilantro crema and an "OK" salsa. The arepa shell could not have been more perfect. It was crunchy on the outside and moist and fluffy on the inside. The filling complimented what was already "arepa perfection." I also ordered the Arequipe empanada, a puff pastry filled with dulce de leche and guava. I almost embarrassed myself by how quickly I ate it. Creamy, not too sweet caramel, dancing with tart guava paste = great combination. I spent $10 on the 2 items and I was full and had happy taste buds. The young lady at the register was very nice. The café is tiny and cozy with two outdoor tables. I'll have to try the coffee next. Yes, I've already made another doc appt, so I can return to the café :-D Oh, of course, this area has NO good parking options, but now that I'm no longer coveting parking spots in Dallas, I'll share this tip that some may not know. If you are willing to walk about 0.5 miles, you can always (except during festival or major event time) find free parking on or around Swiss Ave and Oak St area. There's a little dog park in that area as well and typically lots of free (sometimes with a 2 hour limit) parking.

Yelp
Cute and quaint coffee shop in the heart of Bishop Arts District. Very much influenced by Latin culture! They have empanadas and arequipes, as well as good coffee. The barista was warm and welcoming. I got the chicken empanada and a macchiato which was great!
google avatar

Ellen A.

Yelp
I was staying next door at the Home2 Suites to visit my mom while she's at Baylor. After one crappy "free"breakfast at the hotel, the next day I stopped in here for a quick breakfast sandwich and soda. I'd gladly pay for again since it was fresh and delicious. I was disappointed they weren't open on Saturday so I could try the empanadas . Boo
google avatar

Kady L.

Yelp
Definitely a good spot for this building. I come in once a month for my allergy injection and always want to stop by here on the way. I am disappointed there isn't matcha at this cafe but their coffee is just as good. I typically ordered the bacon and egg breakfast taco and it comes with two sauce... so gooooood. I always get the usual. Should really try something else next time.

Yelp
Delicioso!!!! This is a true original Colombian cafe with delicious empanadas y arepas!!! I came to Dallas to a meeting and stopped in when I saw they have empanadas. The empanadas were delicious as well as the coffee. Service was very friendly. The place is clean, modern, has WiFi if you need to work some and the food is super! Try it! You will like it!!

Yelp
This was my first time at Empumoso and I was not disappointed! I had Cafe de leche and the chicken and cheese empanada. The empanada is a must, I want back for a second!!

Alice W.

Yelp
Best empanadas! And the green sauce they come with is creamy, spicy and delicious. The cafe ambiance is really cute, nice spot to relax or study
google avatar

Steffanie B.

Yelp
I really really enjoy the cafe con leche here along with the chorizo breakfast tacos. The chairs aren't the most comfortable and the young ladies tend to be perfunctory meaning they get the job done but they certainly don't add value to my experience. There is free wifi. I enjoy being able to come here when I am in or near the hospital. FYI - There is ONE parking spot in the parking garage dedicated to this cafe so if you're lucky...otherwise you'd have to pay for some sort of parking which is a bummer.

Yelp
Fresh food. Fast service. - that's should be Espumoso's motto. I frequent this restaurant a lot and never am disappointed. The food is fresh. Actually cutting the avocado in front of you - type of fresh. The chicken is very juicy and tender. The sauces given with the burrito bowls are a great addition to marry all the seasoning together. The cafe is small but decorated well and the food is ready under 5 minutes. They also have really good lattes. The milk and honey latte is my favorite. A sweeter way to start my morning. Even though I haven't tried them, the empanadas are also a fan favorite. They look crispy and brown with a lot of filling. The next time I'm in I'll definitely have to try one. Also, they have a punch card service so you can earn rewards as you buy meals! Enjoy!

Yelp
Wow! I was just looking for a latte after my doctors visit but I got so much more! I could not pass up a breakfast taco (delicious) and an empanada (beef and potato). The empanada was incredible! The service was great, the entire restaurant just a nice atmosphere. I highly recommend Espumoso! I now have extra motivation to go back for a doctors visit!

Yelp
This review is for their espresso drinks. My boyfriend and I fancy ourselves Espresso Connoisseurs and let me tell you...they make a mean latte. We don't really go out to buy lattes in Dallas because A) we have our own espresso maker and buy Italian Beans and B) Dallas has disappointing coffee shops compared to the Bay Area/Seattle. We actually had to go out and grab a latte today because our espresso maker went down (we're waiting for our descaling powder to be delivered). Espumoso did not disappoint. The problem with most American coffee shops is their obsession with overly roasted beans and burning their espresso when they make it. Espumoso uses a lovely espresso bean and their espresso was properly done. My boyfriend had a small single shot, whole milk latte and he said he'd get another one from here. I had their Cafe con Leche and would also go back for another one. 12/10 would recommend them for espresso drinks if you're in the Dallas area.

Yelp
Was torn between getting a cubano sandwich and an arepa, but then realized I could get a cubano arepa! It was tasty, although pretty small for $6.95, so would recommend if you're already in the area, but not worth going out of your way to get it. Not sure why they drizzled chocolate on the tres leches - it wasn't on the cake in the display, so I wasn't expecting it, especially because tres leches does not typically have chocolate drizzled on. It didn't make it bad, but it took away from the typical flavor profile of tres leches. Trying some of it without the chocolate, the tres leches was just ok. I prefer my tres leches more saturated, but if you don't usually like tres leches due to its propensity toward sogginess, this may be a good option for you - just ask that they hold off on the chocolate.

Rikki J.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice and it's so flavorful and tasty. Their honey and vanilla latte is better than any coffee Starbucks has. Phenomenal! I've already been twice in the last seven days and brought a friend with me last time who loved it just as much.
google avatar

Richa T.

Yelp
Came here the other day for a quick up of coffee. Pros: + Amazing Empanadas - They have such a large variety. + Guava empanadas are phenomenal!!! They use cream cheese and guava filling that isn't extremely sweet. + Delicious coffee options as well with plenty of Latin flair + Friendly staff Cons: - A little tough to access in terms of parking. There is a garage on the other side. However, it does require quite a bit of walking.
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
They don't have major signage from what I noticed so be on the lookout! I had the BEST egg white breakfast burrito with black beans, cheese and avocado. Large portion. Appreciated the friendly cashier - she's super cool and unassuming and not some Starbucks crackhead with an inflated ego. I recommend you check it out for yourself! Great quality and prices!

Yelp
Saturday's = No Empanadas. What a major disappointment. Reviews looked solid and after a week in South America I was hoping to find a great Dallas restaurant to extend my empanadas "diet". Espumoso was close and advertised as an empanadas cafe on yelp. Parking was almost impossible. The cafe is in a medical office building with a parking garage behind the building. Signs advertised retail parking yet we could only find reserved spaces for a bank, valet spots, and other various spaces stating reserved. So, we took a ticket and parked on level 2 (first 20 minutes free). The elevator lobby wasn't open so we had to find the stairs and walk around the building. Upon entering, the food case was empty and the place had only one guy behind the counter. This is clearly a place designed for the doctors and med staff working M-F at the hospital across the street. So - if you want empanadas I would suggest trying somewhere else. If you work across the street then this could be a good option during the week.

Yelp
Ok so I haven't had an arepa in a....long damn time!! I recently moved to Texas and this was one of the spots I found. First and foremost, their cafe con leche was BOMB. I dare someone to tell me otherwise. I also ordered one of their arepas, the avocado and beef one. It wasn't the best I've had, but it was delicious and did the job. I've come back multiple times for the same thing, and hope to try other things. Tldr; try this place, it's great.

Ms T.

Yelp
Meh! I wanted to like this place because of the reviews, but I found the food to be lacking. The breakfast tacos were bland and the empanadas were, well....gross! I couldn't finish eating them. On a positive note, the coffee was great! This is why the 2 stars.
google avatar

Denise P.

Yelp
After my doctor's appointment I was feeling a little peckish (had bloodwork so I couldn't eat beforehand). I really needed my morning coffee, too! Stumbled on Espumoso while waiting for my Uber driver. Had a beef and potato empanada and a cold pressed hazelnut coffee. Yum and yum!! It was a little pricey (over $8) but so delicious and satisfying. I'd definitely go back again!
google avatar

Kristine N.

Yelp
Best place in Dallas for Columbian empanadas! The flavors are beef and potato, chicken, ham, pizza, and vegetarian/hummus. My favorite is beef and potato. It's pastry shell is a semi-crisp dough with a generous amount of filling. The empanadas are kept warm and crispy on a daily basis. Aside from empanadas, there's also breakfast tacos, dessert, and coffee. Overall, Espumoso is a nice local cafe to enjoy a quick breakfast or empanadas (or evening just dessert) together with coffee.
google avatar

Christiana D.

Yelp
If I checked in for every time I was here in a span of 2 months, it'd be very embarrassing lol BUT the most would be 2 trips in one day.. iDk what it is about this place that casted a spell over me, I blame their iced Dulce de leche & cafe con leche. I found their chicken & cheese or beef & potato empanadas so satisfying.. if I knew they'd be closed before I had to work, I'd buy extra for that time (: my coworker called me obsessed with them.. I feel as though I was but I have no problem with that!

Yelp
This slightly upscale Latin cafe just opened on Gaston Ave, directly across from Baylor Medical (which also means it's a very short walk from the Baylor Medical DART rail station.) This was my first visit, and my only complaint is that I didn't have the belly room to try more stuff. I will be back here MANY times! I had a Beef & Potato empanada, a Shredded Beef burrito, and a Guava jam & cream cheese empanada. Wow. Just....wow. The empanada crusts are fresh, light, and buttery. The fillings were just right in terms of flavor, not overpowering the crust, but richly complementing, instead. The Romeo & Juliet (guava jam & cream cheese) came crusted with course sugar crystals, and the filling is orgasm-sounds-inducing. Empanadas are so simple, right? But, it's still easy to screw them up. I find most to be too greasy, or soggy. Not an issue, here. Perfect. Same with the tortilla on the burrito. Fresh, and handmade. Gloriously tender, and the filling was hearty and tasty. They offer several sauces, so be sure to try them all. They serve other Latin favorites, such as Arepas (corn based bread with filling. Think "gordita" if you're from Tex-Mex land. They also have sandwiches and bowls. I can't wait to get my face-hole around a Cuban sandwich and a Tres Leches empanada. Also, they have a decent breakfast menu, and full espresso bar. I plan to drop by one morning to get my morning bzzzzzzzzzz on.
google avatar

Kay A.

Yelp
Love the idea of empanadas and espresso! I stumbled upon this gem recently after a doctors appointment on Gaston. I really just wanted coffee but when I walked in, I saw the empanadas and knew they were legit because they had the abuelas working the kitchen. And my gut instinct was right, I ordered the classic beef and potato and they were delish! The green sauce is bomb. Would definitely come back here to try the others
google avatar

Yelp
It was just ok. I met up with my sister for lunch at Potbelly which is two doors down and she told me about this place having empanadas and I definitely wanted to check it out. It's a cozy, cute place with the empanadas and dessert on display. At 2.99 they are a little steep so I decided to just get two. I decided on the veggie empanada which had seasoned ground chickpeas and veggies and I got the shredded chicken and cheese empanada. The empanadas came with what the cashier called a salsa but it tasted like a spicy mayonnaise but nonetheless it was delicious. The chicken and cheese empanada was a no go, the inside was bland and it was way to much cheese which I never thought I would say. The empanada dough was delicious, it was buttery and flaky, definitely made well. The veggie empanada was by far better then the chicken. Imagine a really good textured bean dip inside of empanada dough, may sound weird but it was very good and again that sauce added a great flavor. The veggies weren't visible so I'm assuming they were ground up with the chickpeas but this one I would get again. My first impression was it was ok, but i would go back because the menu did consists of more then empanadas. My mom had the guava and cream cheese empanada which I tried and it was ok. I'll give it another chance in hopes that I'll be more impressed next time.

Yelp
I was nearby at a doctor's appointment and had to have plans done while fasting. I have an app called ritual and it let me know that Espumoso took online orders. I ordered while I waited in line to get my next appointment. I went downstairs and in less than a minute of my arrival to Espumoso, my order was completed. Great customer service and great food and coffee. I will definitely recommend Espumoso. My sister enjoyed the cheese Danish I brought back home and the coffee was nice and strong. It was also very hot which is awesome because it survived the whole ride home and was the perfect temp by the time I finally took my first sip.

Doug S.

Yelp
Absolutely DELICIOUS empenadas! Friendly service ! I love the brisket empenadas and the chicken and cheese empenadas. I will soon be trying all the rest. Especially since they are only 2.99. The drinks are a little pricey, but the food is SOOOO GOOD!
google avatar

Rajvi B.

Yelp
I'm a student at the Health Science center thats within 2 minutes walking distance and their coffee is heavenly when there are 6 hours of lectures or back to back exams. They have student discounts and also happy hour specials from time to time. I always get the single cuban coffee and am the type of person that likes lattes that aren't too sweet so for me this was perfect! The cups are the perfect size and the pricing is great $2.50 for a coffee. Love the accessibility/ pricing and taste of the coffee.

Marissa H.

Yelp
I'm so glad I found Espumoso Caffe! I love this place, it has become my regular on UberEATS! I can only speak for the food, so I recommend the vegetarian arepa as well as the shredded chicken arepa. Deliciously creamy flan too!! FYI, usually 2 items (arepa and/or empanada) is enough for lunch. Really nice packaging for UberEATS as well- all individually wrapped and boxed so your arepa sandwiches stay intact.

Amelia K.

Yelp
Amazing empanadas! My office caters them sometimes for events which is how I found out about this place. The beef and potato, chicken & cheese, and vegetable empanadas are all super delicious! I seriously can't get enough of them. They're around $2.75 each, but they're pretty big and two could probably fill you up. I haven't had a chance to try other items on their menu yet, but I definitely will the next time I go. They have coffee, breakfast tacos, sandwiches, and acai bowls. Lots of variety here, I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Zahra B.

Yelp
If you're looking for some authentic and TASTY empanadas and arepas, look no further!!! Quick service and delicious food, can't wait to come back for more!! 10/10 highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Love this place!!! I stop here every chance I get. The hot chocolate (Abuelita) is amazing! Breakfast tacos, arepas, and empanadas are all delicious.
google avatar

Tien T.

Yelp
YUMMY! I work in the area and start craving this place for lunch sometimes. Their service is as well.

J R.

Yelp
Beef & Potato Empanada. Tried it twice with a friend. Fresh, good seasoning, not greasy, soft & buttery empanadas with enough crunch to it! Recommend this place! Place is always clean, and very comfortable setting.

Meredith M.

Yelp
Everything about Espumoso Caffe is great. The vibe was welcoming as well the workers. Pretty much every menu item that we have purchased was very fresh and flavorful. Team are really lovely and service is really fast. Espumoso Caffe, I'll be back the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
A good espresso would have bumped this to 5 stars. No crema. Drinkable, but barely. Veggie empanada was tasty. But the arepa. The arepa was heaven. On the menu, it comes stuffed with all kinds of breakfast stuff, I ordered mine plain with butter. Slightly crisp on the outside, warm and creamy inside. Bien sabroso. No, ¡increíble! Hope I don't have to be near Baylor again any time in the near future, but I will make my way back for arepas...

Yelp
Wow I love this place. Wife is in the hospital so I dropped in. Best empanadas I've had in a long time. The espresso is perfect and the correct temperature... Really quality. Been there 3 days in a row and will be back tomorrow. Took the Romeo and Juliet to the wife for Valentine's day and shared it in the hospital room. Really a special treat. Would love to open one of these in Frisco!
