On the Camino de Costa Rica, Stay With Local Families and Learn Cultural Lessons

"On the final day, we hiked five miles uphill from the hamlet of Naranjillo to get our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, then hiked two miles downhill to Esquipulas, a small town in the foothills of the Brunqueña mountain range. We cooled off with a dip in a waterfall and finished with lunch at Esquipulas Rainforest, a glamping retreat and coffee plantation. As we relaxed, a bouquet of hummingbirds began to feed on the flowers of a nearby banana tree." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Great place to see a lot of birds...Up close. While you relax with an excellent cup of fresh Costa Rican coffee. The owners are super accommodating. Highly recommend that you check this place out.

Loved the place! The owner is super gentle and committed to the project, birdwatching is top notch and facilities are great. Not a fancy place in the sense of luxury, but natural beauty beats everything else. Will visit again, no doubt.

Brilliant glamping! The place is asbolutely fantastic. Jimmy and Carlos are amazing; kitchen staff as well. Very good included breakfast. No need really to go out for birdwatching; you can simply sit there and see amazing birds; we even saw a Royal Vulture! The tents are neat and comfy. Showers are hot and with good pressure. Again, stunning views. What perhaps helped is that there were only 1 other couple there when we visited, so we had the place to ourselves.

We did not stay here, we came for their mountain grown coffee. We were offered a fresh brewed sample, warm from the oven banana bread from the bananas grown on site. A few local crafts for sale. A bird watching station set up. Worth the visit!!

For birders this is a must - a wonderful experience with lovely people, an amazing array of birds and scenery. Even saw a Jaguarundi. If you've seen sloths, I would skip Manuel Antonio and go straight here! They have delicious coffee tours too.

AMAZING STAY WITH SOME AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT + Area is absolutely beautiful and calm, in the middle of the nature, lots of birds and animals + Tipis were clean and super comfy, you can watch the sunrise from your bed. + Owner Carlos + kitchen staff were super friendly + Food was good (typical costa rican cuisine) + WiFi worked in the common area - Shared bathroom could have been cleaner, trash was always full - The location is really in the middle of nowhere, so without a car it’s hard to get anywhere - We had the feeling that the manager was just trying to get the most money out of us, which felt a bit uncomfortable - The bird watching tour was quite expensive for what it was (just spending 2-3 hours around the breakfast area). We did not learn much about the birds except for their names. If you are a guest, I would recommend just having an early breakfast at 6am, without booking the tour - pretty much the same.

Sleeping in the middle of the nature with all the necessary comforts. Looks better in person than in the pictures. The restaurant is so delicious with fresh ingredients. The best of two worlds: a rain forest close to the beach. Can’t wait to visit again✨
