The Best Resorts in the World: 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards

"Drive just 40 minutes northeast of Punta Del Este’s sunny beaches and swank resorts, and you’ll hit this Uruguayan sanctuary: a 12-suite Spanish colonial spread dropped into 4,000 wind-whipped acres of rugged countryside, just a mile from the coast. More than half of the white-walled estancia’s footprint is taken up by interior pockets of outdoor space—gardens, courtyards, walkways. The rest holds its other charms, like individually designed rooms, courtesy of Uruguayan artists: The master suite Vik, for example, is wrapped in rich, dark woods, while the Trujillo suite’s bed is anointed by a massive nude painting. Make a plan to test out the massive indoor barbecue surrounded by tin walls—a nod to the galpons, or sheds, used by gauchos, and hosed in graffiti for one of the hotel’s many art-driven kicks." - CNT Editors

Estancia Vik Jose Ignacio (Jose Ignacio, Uruguay) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Estancia Vik Jose Ignacio isn’t exactly what you’d expect of a high-end Uruguayan ranch. It’s not in the jet-set capital of Punta del Este, for starters — the hotel is located a mere twenty kilometers away, just outside the laid-back beach community of Jose Ignacio — and the aesthetic is a notable departure from the rustic woodwork and cowhides of a traditional estancia. The contemporary colonial-style mansion, set on a sprawling 4,000-acre near-seaside property, is a showcase for edgy South American artwork and innovative interior design." - Tablet Hotels

Estancia Vik José Ignacio is a truly unique and charming destination. While I tend to gravitate toward beach and desert settings, this countryside escape offered a grounding and serene experience that was incredibly nourishing. The farm-to-table food was a true highlight—beautifully presented, deeply nourishing, and filled with anti-inflammatory ingredients. I loved picking fresh produce, learning about their sustainable process, and enjoying meals that were both exquisite and healthy. Horse therapy was another magical moment; the connection with the horses felt deeply profound. Although I usually prefer more modern comforts, I truly appreciated the rustic elegance of Estancia Vik. The staff was beyond kind and attentive—always warm, thoughtful, and present. This experience was a beautiful reminder of the power of slowing down and reconnecting with nature.

Had a wonderful spontaneous overnight at Estancia Vik and fortunately experienced none of the problems of some reviewers. The staff was absolutely terrific, including reception and restaurant staff. I only had a small salad meal for dinner and glass of Vik wine but the salad was terrific. The breakfast then was outstanding and for the early wakers there is coffee machine and capsules in your room.|The rooms are huge (and I stayed in a small one) and very thoughtfully furnished but then again the whole property is a bit of an art museum. Gym use is included but the facility is at Bahia Vik, another of their properties which requires a transfer unless you are visiting by car, this is the only flaw I could during my experience. On the other hand an unexpected horseride was included with the wonderful Carlos who patiently explained lots of horseriding tricks. |Staying at Estancia Vik, even for a single night, is pricey but then most similar estancias and wine lodges nearby carry similar price tags. And it is a beautiful, intimate property with a huge land around to roam freely so definitely a worthy once-in-a-lifetime splash.

Very nice. No tv, no in room phone. Having said that it was too expensive for what it is. The first time I filled the wooden bathtub, the water leaked all over the floor very quickly. We were not offered another room nor given courtesy for having to put up with the deficiency

We loved our stay at Estancia VIK! The employees were incredibly kind and helpful—the nicest people! Our gaucho, Carlos, was an amazing teacher for my kids, and we had so much fun galloping through the vast green landscape. The food was generally good, but in our opinion, it’s the hotel’s weak spot. We missed having a standout, special restaurant on the property. The rooms were beautiful but not very cozy (they felt too cold, and I missed having rugs). We visited in October, and the kids would have enjoyed a heated pool. Despite these points, I definitely want to go back!

Begin your escape at Estancia Vik, a luxury ranch in José Ignacio offering a sophisticated retreat with an authentic Uruguayan feel. This estancia is renowned for its art-filled interiors, expansive grounds, and views of the surrounding pampas. Guests can enjoy horseback riding along the rolling landscape, and as the sun sets, you’ll experience an asado (traditional barbecue) prepared by expert chefs. The ranch’s collection of local artwork and sculptures, combined with personalized service, provides a unique blend of cultural immersion and comfort.

The setting is beautiful, but the service fails to live up to the expectations and price. Despite only having 12 rooms, the hotel fails to provide a truly personalised service that makes you feel at home. ||Outside one of our rooms, they started setting up a massive event WITHOUT WARNING THE GUESTS. Imagine our surprise opening the windows in our pyjamas to see a dozen men quite literally outside. Within a metre of our window. We had to spend the rest of the day changing with the curtains closed, as they were also outside our bathroom window (which has no curtains). Please find photos attached. It is important to note that ours was the only room that was boxed in by these structures and again, they did not give us even a warning about it. Much less try to repair the damage done to our last day of holiday.||When we brought this up, the manager Guillermina was completely unhelpful and arrogant. She offered no reparations or solutions, not even a bottle of wine or lunch, for our trouble. Another member of staff made the unhelpful suggestion of enjoying the hotel’s common areas — as if that is any comfort for not being able to use the room we paid for.||Food is average at best. Most of the reservations they suggested were also for average restaurants which totally lacked any ambiance. And once again, Guillermina made us feel like suggesting and booking places for us was a massive inconvenience to her. We know for a fact we are not the only guests who had problems with her bad attitude as it was a conversation point between us guests at the pool.||The highlight of this hotel was Melina, who was the only staff member who was helpful enough to even attempt to get us a reservation in order to make amends for the room situation. We are sincerely grateful for her trying to save our holiday. We would never return to this place - not so much for the event situation, but for the hotel’s lack of attempt to make any reparations or acknowledgement of wrongdoing.

What a lovely experience we had staying at Estancia Vik. The staff, especially, Guadeloupe, was superb. They were helpful, personable and very eager to make sure our stay was perfect.||The Estancia enjoys the most beautiful setting on top of a hill with wonderful views of grazing cattle and horses, a lagoon and glimpses of the ocean in the distance. The public areas are incredible with works of art adorning every wall and statues gracing all the open spaces. No expense has been spared in furnishing this vast property and its twelve rooms.||Our room was spacious and extremely comfortable. It was like staying in the one of the finest art galleries. When we opened our windows it got even better with beautiful views in all directions. ||The food was good and contrary to other reviews there were wines on sale for just under US$40.||During the day we thoroughly enjoyed the horse riding. The horses were very well behaved and the staff friendly and responsible. We also took advantage of visiting the two other Vik hotels at the beach, which is just a fifteen minute drive away. Otherwise there is the heated pool at the Estancia to enjoy. ||We stayed for three nights, we wished we had stayed much longer.
