"Arrive before 1 p.m. or after 2:30 p.m. to snag a bar stool at this small restaurant, since the place fills up at lunchtime with office workers and tourists. The daily menu is made up of just a handful of dishes, which might include paprika chicken with truffled polenta and dried tomato pesto, or the classic Uruguayan steak sandwich, the chivito, prepared with upgraded ingredients like filet mignon, arugula, coriander chimichurri, and a poached egg, and served deconstructed on a plate rather than a roll. Desserts, like a caramelized pear tart with pink pepper and creme brulee ice cream, are always inventive. — NMW" - Marcela Baruch, Nell McShane Wulfhart

We had the best time here!! The food and service (I think our waiters name was Amelia? She was a queeenn!!) was fantastic, we tried the filet mignon, the fish of the day, and chicken salad and loved all of it. Was also entertaining being able to see all our dishes being prepared in front of us.

We were disappointed with our lunch here. The service was great, and it's a beautiful venue, but the food was just...meh. It's presented well, but my fish crepes were incredibly bland, and over-seared, making what should have been a delicate dish very tough. Perhaps I chose wrong, but this felt like style over substance, especially for the price.

Such an amazing place! Every dish was very well crafted and enjoyed the mix of some Asian influence with European dishes. Great service and knowledgeable and passionate staff.

Incredible service and top class food. This was our first meal in Montevideo, and it’s going to be very hard to beat. Definitely coming back again before we leave!

This little gem in the heart of Ciudad Vieja is fantastic! No pictures because I was too busy talking and eating. The food, the staff, the location, and the atmosphere are perfect. Still the best in MVD.

Excellent food and, for the area, at a very reasonable price. Apparently the menu changes daily. I enjoyed the baguette with smoked salmon. If I went again, I'd definitely order something from the stovetop, since the entire seating area is just the bar and they cook everything right behind it. It was interesting to watch them cook just meters away, and I was a bit envious that I hadn't ordered something that I'd get to see cooked. I also ordered the creme brulee dessert, which was not my all-time favorite but was still very good and also prepared in view. Definitely recommend this place.

Couldn’t find this place - may be closed. Copacobana next door had to suffice… Update: OK, so in spite of the snarky reply I decided to swing by and see what I missed. Indeed, Estrecho is there - pretty close to where Google maps has it. Best I can tell it was boarded up when I was looking for it the other day (Google indicated it should be open) due to “Tourism Week”. As such I decided to give it a try wondering if the service was going to be as edgy as the owners reply and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly service, good food, and nice ambience. Changing to 5 stars.
