The Best Places to Eat Chocolate in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Montreal’s bean-to-bar chocolate scene (chocolate made from scratch with raw cacao beans) has exploded within recent years, and État de Choc is a fine reflection of this. Its Little Italy store is closed to the public, but online orders are still available (although possibly not for long due to heavy volumes)." - Tim Forster

Here’s Every 2018 Restaurant and Bar Opening in One Place | Eater Montreal

"Opening on St-Laurent in Little Italy, État de Choc is a new-generation artisanal chocolate-maker selling bars, mini-bars and small “lingots,” and isn’t afraid to experiment with flavours like hops, corn, white curry and wasabi while also offering purer cocoa options and classics such as strawberry, maple and coffee." - Eater Staff

The Best Places to Eat Chocolate in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Montreal’s bean-to-bar chocolate scene (chocolate make from scratch from raw cacao beans themselves) has exploded within recent years. État de Choc is a fine reflection of this and serves as a one-stop-shop for local bars from producers like Avanaa and Monarque. It also offers its own line of products, including a selection of dainty bonbons." - Mallory Frayn

Chocolaterie État de Choc Opens Up in Montreal’s Little Italy | Eater Montreal

"Opening Friday (November 2), I note État de Choc is a new artisanal chocolate-maker on St-Laurent in Little Italy at 6466 St-Laurent. It will sell mostly bars, mini-bars, and “lingots” (small chocolate bites, not a chunky bar comparable to a gold ingot), and the chocolatiers aren’t afraid to experiment — flavours include hops, corn, white curry, and wasabi — while also offering purer cocoa options and classics like strawberry, maple, and coffee. The shop is talking a big quality game, promising carefully chosen base products and placing an emphasis on traceability. The space near Beaubien Street is primarily a boutique but will also offer occasional events, including tastings and chocolate-making classes for both kids and adults. Quebec’s business registry lists Maud Gaudreau as the owner, and available online information suggests she brings experience from Chocolats Geneviève Grandbois. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday." - Tim Forster

Best Q.

Google
We love a good chocolate—perhaps a little too much—so naturally, we went in search of the kind of high-quality cocoa magic that makes life worth living. We walked out with an assortment of intriguing chocolate bars, the kind of flavour combinations that make you pause, raise an eyebrow, and then nod in impressed approval. Maple and miso? Corn and peppers? And yes, the creativity absolutely works. We also grabbed some salted butter caramel and a bag of hot cocoa mix that looked promising—because who doesn’t love a cozy cup of molten comfort? Every item, from the petite bars to the mix and caramel, was clearly small-batch, house-made, and crafted with an almost suspicious level of care. Truly delicious. Now… about the prices. Let’s just say the name “État de Choc” doubles as a spoiler for your reaction at the register. The hot cocoa bag rings in at $22.50, and if you follow the directions, you’ll get two cups—two!—(if you use water, which we recommend, unless you enjoy drinking pudding). The adorable 25 g bars, which fit inside a medium-sized hand, are $8 each. To be clear, we understand the craftsmanship, the quality, and the small-batch labor of love behind every item—and we truly enjoyed everything we tried. But unless we suddenly discover a golden ticket in our next bar, this will remain a very occasional indulgence.

Google
If you want artisanal chocolates, this is the place to go! There are so many amazing flavors to choose from, it makes you want to come back to try more each time. The harmonious flavor mixing are intriguing and are truly what makes this place special. You can find multiple kinds of chocolates that marry ingredients together, ingredients that you would never think of having in chocolate. Some of the ones I've tried and that I've enjoyed are: pistachio + maple and jasmine tea + coffee.

Google
Premium chocolate. One of the best places to go to understand chocolate better and buy chocolate gifts for someone really special. They have really fine chocolates upwards over$100.

Google
Amazing selection of artisan chocolates from all over! They make their own chocolates that have won many awards! We tried the citron milk chocolate and it had an amazing balance of sweet and tart. Very delicious! The artwork on their chocolate covered is also very pleasing to the eye!

Google
The premium chocolates here are so good! This was our last stop when we did a food tour in Montreal. We had some chocolate sampling with the owner, Maud. She was very knowledgeable and explained the bean-to-bar process. The variety of chocolates were so delicious and I like that they have sugar-free milk chocolates, perfect for diabetics. Thank you, Maud, for taking the time to go over the different flavours with us.

Google
Enhanced experience for discovering chocolates from many horizons and heading to new destinations! In the words of my grade school age child: “It’s like a library for chocolate”. This hedonists’ boutique is yours to discover (since circa 2019 according to employee)

Google
Very nice chocolate shop, friendly service. Beware - you can easily spend decent amount of money. We bought the flavor of the month - tangerine block or something. Thank you for being attentive.

Various chocolate selections, some special flavors too. Highly recommended for chocolate lovers, also a great place to buy some souvenirs of Montreal. Owner is very sweet and nice!😊

Yelp
A few weeks ago, I did a walking food tour of Jean Talon Market and the surrounding area. Our tour ended at Etat de Choc, a chocolate store that sells their own chocolates and other companies' chocolates. They also offer tastings, which our tour group did (we got a taste of four 3-4 different chocolate bars and a pistachio butter). The service was great, the tasting was great, and the products they carry are wonderful. I left with several different chocolates to share with people back home! Such a fun store!

Yelp
Espresso is to coffee as the chocolates offered here is to mainstream chocolates like Nestle/Lindt. With that being said, this is a store for dark chocolate aficionados. Savor the richness and subtilities of chocolates coming from different regions of the world...Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and more! My favorite in the selection that I bought was the Mini Chocolate Bar - Dulcey Pistachio. Because it's sweet and crunchy and suited my plebein tastes. I should've gone more with the milk chocolate options or their chocolate spreads than the dark chocolate flavors cause let's face it... I'm the "coffee drinker" with extra whipped cream and yes please for the sprinkles lol. My second favorite was the Dick Taylor raspberry vanilla dark chocolate. Here's my taste testing notes: - Dark Banana Hazelnut: I couldn't detect any banana but it is very crunchy with the chopped hazelnut throughout the bar - Dark Corn Chili: tastes of roasted crunchy corn - Dark Maple-Fir: tastes lightly of fir - Dark Chocolate Hop: tastes lightly of hops - Blond Pistachio: sweet and caramel flavored with crunchy pistachios - Raspberry Vanilla: dark with light hints of raspberry This is quality chocolate and the packaging is beautiful. The chocolates are made in small lots. They offer chocolate workshops which I was going to attend but due to covid19 didn't happen so I exchanged my workshop voucher for chocolates instead. Since these are premium chocolates, they're also pricey so make sure you choose well!

Yelp
Location: On the main bordering Little Italy. Street parking is available but metered. The closest subway is probably Beaubien and then it's a few minutes walk from there. To be clear: This initial review is NOT about the products (or the vast variety) that are sold here. My review serves to highlight the complete lack of customer service that is (not) offered here. I went to État de Choc earlier today and the store was empty, except for the clerk who was working. No greeting. No smile. No "Can I help you?" or "Are you looking for anything in particular?" Or "Can I provide you with any information about the 100 types of chocolate we sell here?" Considering the price range, I would expect, at the very least, a friendly greeting when I walk in and some guidance on the different varieties of chocolate that they offer. Thanks to the lousy service, I doubt I'll be returning, especially since I always receive exceptional service at Les Chocolats de Chloe and Lecavalier Petrone.

Yelp
Great chocolatier. Although I did not buy many products. The owner was very generous and made me try the Cacao juice, which tasted like lychee juice and was surprisingly very sweet. The ice bar was AMAZING. So many choices of chocolates, the owner is also very knowledgeable and knows well what she's selling. Great place.
