When we first moved to woodstock we were so excited to hear about a chocolate shop and cafe that had vegan options, and we went regularly. I'm not a coffee drinker, but my husband is and he always loves his latte. I have been going here to get my matcha on special occasion for maybe 6 months now. Every time it's awesome! So well blended, the perfect amount of oat milk, no clumps, and the perfect syrups (I think it's lavender and vanilla, but I'm not sure). Even the color is beautiful, this very pretty light green. I only get it on occasion because it's about $10, which I don't feel like justifying everyday. However, about a week ago, I could not justify it at all. My husband ordered me a regular matcha latte with oat milk, which was my order before they had their "strawberry fields forever" special for summer. He comes back with a dark green, fish tank scum colored drink. I looked at him like "what is this" and he said "I don't know, it wasn't the usual woman that makes it". I asked if he could go back in and have them remake it because it just tasted like a scoop of matcha powder with room temp water. He comes back to the car 5 minutes later with the exact looking drink. I taste it again, and it tastes no different than their first mistake, I was so disappointed. I wasn't going to go back in again and complain, so i just took it home and added my own oat milk and syrups. I hope if I give it another shot, it will be made right again.
As for the food and chocolate, it's okay. I never crave ethereal chocolate, but I'm also not that much of a chocolate person. All of their chocolates are vegan aside from the ones with honey, which is awesome! However, many members of staff don't know what vegan is, and look very confused when I ask if a certain caramel chocolate is vegan (because 99% of caramel is made from dairy milk). The vegan baked goods in the case are okay, no complaints, but no rave appeal, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy some, but if I'm already there I might get one. The vegan menu items are, unfortunately, very underwhelming. The vegan breakfast sandwich is nothing special, just some 'just egg' and vegan cheese on an English muffin. Wouldn't get it again. I could make my own at home in the microwave, not worth $9.50. "The millennial" is just some basic avocado toast, not worth $8.
The staff are maybe in their late teens, early 20s. They don't really smile or make nice small talk with customers, they are more concerned with talking to their coworkers about personal stuff. I'm totally fine with that, just maybe be a tiny bit nicer to me while I'm dropping $20 on 2 drinks for my husband and I. Once they told me the kitchen was closed when it wasn't, I felt kinda weird about that exchange, but I don't think that woman works there anymore.
Overall, I like ethereal - on occasion. That occasion being my matcha is made right, I'm not hungry, and I'm given kind customer service. Other than that, I can make my matcha at home.
