There’s a big shiny disco ball, and they do things like bingo and burlesque nights. It’s a divey place with a disco ball and go-go dancers, and it has $10 specials most nights that involve things like empanadas and negronis. "Walk into Ethyl’s Alcohol And Food, and you’ll feel like you’re in Times Square in the 1970s. The walls are covered in ’70s memorabilia, the bathrooms are filthy, and there’s a disco ball. Also, the whole place smells like incense, the walls are lined with mirrors, and pretty much all the music you’ll hear was made before 1980. It’s a charming place, and it’s where you should be drinking whiskey when you’re in the mood for something on the divier side. "The alcohol part of Ethyl’s Alcohol & Food is pretty predictable (which is perfectly fine for this occasion), but the food is more interesting than what you’ll find at most other bars. There’s savory mozzarella French toast, calamari, cheese curds covered in gravy, and a good burger. So if everyone is hungry enough to eat dinner but too commitment-phobic to actually go sit down at a restaurant, try this ’70s-themed bar on the UES." - hannah albertine
"Ethyl’s is a semi-divey bar on the UES with red vinyl bar stools, a bunch of 1970s memorabilia, and a stage in the back where there’s sometimes burlesque. So when you come here with your significant other, they’ll probably say something like, “Wow, what a cool place.” And you can respond with, “Yes, it is a cool place. Actually, I was hoping we could talk.” Get seats in the back, order some fries, and leave them in the middle of your table so they can function as a sort of security blanket throughout your rollercoaster of a conversation (if rollercoasters started out slow, then got sad and passive aggressive)." - bryan kim
