Awakening the Senses—and Finding Confidence—at the Euphoria Retreat in Greece | Condé Nast Traveler

"Euphoria, a spa resort focused on holistic healing on the Peloponnese peninsula, provides an immersive experience with practices such as somatic meditation. The retreat, led by Marina Efraimoglou and spiritual instructor Mary Vandourou, is nestled in a forest ascending toward Mount Taygetus and offers a serene environment for women's leadership and empowerment. Guests are welcomed by the fragrance of an orange grove and Byzantine-inspired decor, and have opportunities to bond through activities like drama therapy."

Euphoria Retreat

"Set the scene The beautiful Peloponnese, a few hours from Athens and near sacred Mount Taygetos. Surrounded by fragrant pine and lemon trees, Euphoria is tucked into the hillside beneath 13th-century Mystras and its fresco-filled Byzantine churches. The joy-filled, sunny, wellness experience is in deliberate contrast to the chilly clinics of northern Europe, pulling in repeaters who come not only for the considerable healing experience but also to feel uplifted and cared for. Expect your companions to be intellectual spa obsessives who understand the breadth of founder Marina Efraimoglou’s vision, and sun-loving Europeans in need of a post-Covid reset. What's the backstory? Founder and owner Marina Efraimoglou was hit by cancer during her time as the first woman to run one of Greece’s major banks. Her own journey to restore her health through Western medicine and Eastern wisdom and love of alternative therapies led her to abandon her successful banking career and retrain in the Traditional Chinese Medicine which had helped her. She was then inspired to create a retreat that would help others in a similar position to her. Her desire to bring happiness and health to those she meets in life is perfectly captured in the atmosphere of Euphoria Retreat, where her staff follow in her footsteps exuding warmth and wisdom. Working with Marina are highly acclaimed nutritionist Dr George Leon and Mary Vandaorou, whose soothing voice leads the retreat’s many meditation classes. What’s the wellness concept? This destination spa marries east with west in the same uniquely harmonious manner that it blends medicine for the mind as well as the body. Here you can look at the big picture and get yourself back on track, whether it is a physical or psychological tweak that is needed. It is a brilliantly balanced retreat in terms of what it offers for the body and soul, resulting in a rebalance for those who flock here. Among the many other programmes, the three-day Feel Alive Again programme is suited to those suffering the after effects of the pandemic or generally burnt-out from the pace of 21st-century life. It aims to release negative emotions, stress and anxiety felt by participants through laughter yoga, breathwork and dance, meditation and music  – all resulting in a new sense of energy. What are the signature treatments? Apart from the Feel Alive Again programme, do take time to book some of the signature treatments from Gua Sha with the brilliant Vladia, to life-changing Watsu, and the Euphoria Byzantine Hammam Ritual. There is also a homoeopathic doctor who can give you a thorough analysis and prescribe treatment. A core part of the retreat is the beautiful winding stairwell which starts from the Kniepp foot bath area and finishes with a window to the blue Greek skies, with treatment rooms radiating off, while the indoor pool leads to the outside pool which is backed by pine trees and surrounded by flowers.  Which therapist should I book? They are all good, but carve out time to spend with Mary, whose gentle wisdom and insightful comments help to put life’s obstacles in perspective. What makes it different? Most programmes here include having a 3GL test upon arrival, to show how your body is metabolising its food which then allows the nutritionist to tailor make your meals which include two snacks between breakfast, lunch and dinner. This speedy analysis means you really hit the ground running in terms of getting the most out of your time here. The difference here is in the equal importance given to body and mind in terms of treatments and the overall enveloping warmth with which the place is run. It is that warmth and the re-energising heat of the sun which makes it such a restorative place to be. What else do they offer? Food here is seasonal and local and measured carefully in antioxidants and nutritional values to ensure that your tailor-made meals deliver the desired effect. Personalised menus are delicious with lots of fresh fish, Greek cheeses and salads. Breakfast might be  buckwheat pancakes with berries one day, scrambled eggs the next. Lunch often starts with a soup – carrot and ginger, flavoured with citrus and served with pumpkin seeds and prawns – followed by sea bream with grilled vegetables. Dinners include a fish saffron soup with freshly ground lemon pepper and a lentil salad. Wine – and coffee – is allowed, if not necessarily encouraged. There are guided hikes up to Mystras with varying levels of difficulty as well outdoor exercises and fitness trails. There is an extensive library from which you can borrow books to read further on one of the many topics that might have come up during your retreat.Where do you stay? There are 45 rooms beside and above the spa, all clad in Byzantine colours of muted gold and deep red. Some have baths, others showers, most have an outside terrace or balcony. They are supremely comfortable without being cutting edge in any way. Anything else to mention? Euphoria Retreat brims with a sense of place from the Greek mountain herb tea to the lemon trees in the garden, but its medicines and its wisdom has a truly global embrace. Final word This is the kind of place you could go to on your own when in need simply of some downtime in a pleasing environment, but it is also where you could find yourself after years of being lost or get on track with weight loss in a way a more rigorous regime fails to do."

We had such a wonderful time at Euphoria in Mystras, Greece. The location is amazing, tucked into the beautiful mountains. |The facility is exquisite. We were a group of 15 and we all loved our rooms, the restaurant, the indoor and outdoor pool and the beautiful spa. |Most of us had massage treatments (you should try the 5 Element Massage!), and everyone was happy with the amazing service. |Thank you for an amazing experience!

We recently stayed at Euphoria Retreat in Mystras and while the property itself is beautiful, the overall experience was inconsistent. As a Hilton Gold member, I expected at least a warm acknowledgment of status. When we arrived and I asked about the chance of an upgrade given our status, I was told there were no available rooms at all and that's not possible as it's subject to availability. After checking the website myself and pointing out lots of availability in multiple rooms, only then did reception "double-check" and suddenly find one. To make it up, were told a very strange story that it was meant for a single traveler that had just canceled. This left me feeling more uncomfortable than recognized. The hiking activities were definitely a highlight - Nikos was excellent and very knowledgeable of the area. However, when asking for more details about the on-site hiking routes, reception had no clue about even the basic information printed on their own map. In general, we relied more on our own research to find great nearby activities like local chestnut festivals. Breakfast was great, while dinner was extremely average. The waiters were friendly and fun, which helped balance things out. The parking staff were also extremely kind and and multiple times charged our car which was genuinely appreciated. We tried a yoga class that was fairly disappointing. The instructor arrived late - which is totally fine, we are there to relax - however without a shoe box or guidance, everyone kept walking across the floor we would later lie down on with their outdoor shoes. She also never asked if anyone had any health concerns or injuries, which is a very basic expectation from a first-time yoga session in a wellness resort. Additionally, the toilets in every area I used had a design flaw: the flushes caused water to spill onto the floor and even the toilet seat, with the lid closed. Not acceptable from a hygiene perspective in any hotel, let alone a 5-star wellness retreat. The spa itself is stunning, a really magical space, but once again, the staff at the spa reception seemed very unwilling to guide us, as though we should already know how everything worked rather than offering welcoming and proactive help. Overall, the facilities absolutely reflect a 5-star property, but the service often did not. Having stayed at multiple wellness resorts (e.g., Adler), we didn’t feel the same relaxing, seamless experience here that is typically promised in this category. We did enjoy the beautiful surroundings and relaxed thanks to the trips outside the hotel - but the hotel itself has some distance to go before it truly delivers the wellness atmosphere it advertises.

We needed a short break to relax and the place offered us what we needed. The spa is really good and the atmosphere very relaxing. The staff very responsive, kind and pleasant. The food was ok, it can be improved.

This is a magical place! I spent 10 days doing various treatments, classes and hikes. Everything was excellent, the treatments first rate and I learned so much. There is an indoor pool are with all types of whirlpools that is subline!|My room faced the forest and was peaceful and well designed. Housekeeping came twice a day.|Food was gourmet and delicious. The only issue is that after 10 days with a menu that does not really change except for an evening soup and fish special it gets repetitive. Some days there was no soup special and most days it was a fish soup so if you a not into fish soup that was disappointing. They do have the best granola and Greek yogurt in the world. |The property is located a five minute walk from the village of Mystras so if you want to change of scenery, this is a nice little adventure. |Highly recommend!!

This is a beautiful resort with excellent spa staff, however the programme that I took to lose weight and achieve rejuvenation was a complete and utter failure. I was assured that the meal plan which I was to follow would DEFINITELY result in my desired weight loss of 3kgs and I would be far less tired. I even paid considerably more for an additional treatment recommended by the Doctor to boost my metabolism.||I followed the menu religiously with no cheating whatsoever and I also exercised heavily. However my weight, body fat and PONE results at the end of my stay showed no improvement WHATSOEVER. I asked for an explanation at the time and I emailed Euphoria over a week ago but I have not had the courtesy of an explanation or apology. I now also therefore doubt the efficiency of all the other expensive treatments which were part of my package and are impossible to evaluate. ||Another complaint is that I was informed that I was required to use my mobile telephone when I had intended to put it in the safe for the whole of the week and ignore messages and mail for a complete break.||Furthermore, I had to complain twice before the restaurant staff ceased to bang the door to the interior from the veranda every few minutes. Not what one expects from a supposedly relaxing retreat.||I have been to other retreats which are lovely hotels, have good food, staff and treatments and I expected more from Euphoria for the high cost and its marketing. The failure of management to respond to my complaints has been the final insult and I am shocked by this lack of customer consideration from a premium resort My travel agent has also contacted them on my behalf without success. I think that the management is not open to criticism and the whole experience is over-hyped. I would certainly not recommend.

My stay at Euphoria Retreat for the Well & Well-Being Festival was nothing short of transformative. From the serene Peloponnese setting to the beautifully designed spa facilities, every detail radiated peace and harmony. The festival’s workshops, treatments, and mindful activities left me feeling deeply restored, inspired, and reconnected. A truly magical place where wellness meets soul.
