The Best Restaurants and Bars Near San Diego State University (SDSU) | Eater San Diego

"Within walking distance of the Aztec Union, this popular chain restaurant is known for its creative burgers and a well-stocked bar, with lots of beer taps and an impressive selection of small-batch whiskey. With a daily 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. “hoppy hour,” it’s a popular spot for pre-gaming before a show at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre." - Candice Woo

Since this place is on meal plan, whenever I have some extra money to spend at the end of the week, I'll always get a burger to go. Can't comment on service much but everybody is always nice. I got the jalapeño burger and the spicy fried chicken sandwich to go. Both were super tasty and I would absolutely get either again.

Google
Silvan was an awesome waiter, bartender and comedian. Am always tickled to be carded! We just stopped by for quick appetizers and beers—and were not disappointed. Both the fried pickles and Parmesan truffle fries were outstanding. I look forward to another visit before too long.

Let me start by saying that we are big fans of Eureka. We have been to multiple locations without issue and have always had a positive experience, except this location. This particular restaurant is just awful. We have been there twice, and both times were a disaster. Granted that each time was in advance of a concert at the SDSU amphitheater, that’s still no excuse for the level of service (actually lack of) that we experienced. Both visits had the same thing in common, total chaos, not enough wait staff or ability to support how busy it was, LONG wait times for any attention at all, 30-60 minutes before a server even acknowledged our presence. Our latest visit, just this weekend, even worse. We had a reservation a month on advance, which they had no record of when we arrived, we waited for an hour for a table, we sat at the table for 30 minutes before a server came, the restaurant was completely sold out of wine, and it was another 30 minutes before they brought our drinks. We were late to the concert, and this is with an original reservation that was over 2 hours before the start time of the concert. Not rocket science for the restaurant management to plan for nights when there is a concert/event…Definitely do not recommend this restaurant on a day when there is an event, strongly avoid.

Quick dinner on way to a concert... sat outside, food was very tasty, & arrived quickly.

Google
This spot is good for college students. The food itself is pretty mediocre—trying to be fancy, but not quite there. I gave it four stars for the atmosphere because the space has a really nice vibe, though the menu doesn’t quite match the ambience. Since it’s in a college area, students will probably think it’s fancier than it really is, and there are some affordable options too.

Google
Had a great time here, and Dylan was great and took care of us! Would recommend for game days @SDSU.

Google
The service at this place is so incredibly slow. There has been countless times I have been seated but not greeted for over 30 minutes. I placed to go orders all the time and it’s always packaged either incorrectly, missing food, or takes longer than given time. I am extremely disappointed because I actually do enjoy the food. But as a college student on the go, I hate how slow this place is.

Robbie J.

Google
Finding parking in this area sucked, but the food was good. Took a few minutes extra to get a soda refill, but they were pretty busy for a Saturday afternoon. The Double Smash burger was really good. Great selection of beers, too. Not sure why the TV with NFL Network on eas froze up and said BOOTLEG across the bottom, but i am sure there is a reasonable explanation.

Yelp
I've went back and forth with this establishment several times and probably should have written 3 reviews already. The reason I say this is that they literally had been all over the place as far as the service goes. I've mulled over giving them as low as 2 stars at times for the lack of attention. However, when I will knowingly return somewhere, I will be much more patient with them. Believe it or not, I've had at least 3 bills comped for the horrible service after complaining. And I'm not even a whiner.. They have made great strides recently though with some newer, more attentive employees. Also maybe they were scolded.. All this being said, the food has consistently been above average without a doubt. Not your typical bar fare, more like farm to table. They have a daily happy hour from 3-6pm and 9-12 midnight. A few beers, drinks and food items are marked down a bit here. There is actually a Eureka specific IPA beer by Duckfoot called "The Show" dedicated to the SDSU Aztecs fan base. The prices are very reasonable as this particular beer is only $5.50 a pint at all times. Burgers here are some of the better ones I've had for reals and my other favorites include the Napa chicken sandwich and the Ahi Poke stack with black rice. So delicious! Been definitely now a regular here for a few years and much more satisfied.

Yelp
Couldn't have gone in at a slower time but it kind of made sense because they had the laziest crew on. There wasn't anyone at the host stand so I approached the bar where a group of workers stood at the other end, just staring and chitchatting with each other. Finally, one of them told the bartender and she walked over to me, asked me how she could help me and I told her I was there to pick up my order and responded saying someone would help me at the host stand to which I responded, there's nobody there and then she said they'd come out. I can't quite explain it but the girls who did come to the host stand gave the vibe that they didn't want to be bothered with working. Like babe pls quit?! Long review made short, their customer service is trash and due to it, it's probably not worth eating here anymore.

Yelp
My son and I were out Estate saying over the weekend and we started getting a bit hungry. He suggested Eureka because he had been to a different location and enjoyed it. We decided to try the one neat SDSU. We did have to find a pay parking in the area because parking was so difficult. It was worth it! We ordered a truffle cheese fries with garlic airlines to share. Yum! We ate the fries before the burgers arrived. Delicious...I highly recommend these fries. My burger came and it was a bit unusual. It had fig marmalade, goat cheese, etc. But the flavors we on point! Love this gastropub. Oh, I enjoyed an ice tea. Lol!

Yelp
Here's the bad first: Came here for a work lunch with a large group of 13 on Saturday. They sat us at a table for 10, maybe 11 with one on the end. Which meant 2 people had chairs but no table space to put their food. They ended up moving across the way to a booth to eat, which defeated the purpose of eating together. Second thing that was offputting - they have a lot of college age staff who were hanging about and leaning on counters, not really helping bus tables or refill drinks. Two of them were actually sitting at the end of the bar apparently taking their breaks, one with headphones on. Third - the Caesar salad was severly underdressed. It had a huge mound of finely grated parmesan, but no dressing. What saved this from one star was the rest of the food. Sticky Pork Belly Bites were the star of the show. So delicious and great for sharing - except no serving utensil provided. Fresno Fig Burger was delicious with fig marmalade, bacon and goat cheese, especially with a veggie patty substitute. And the Honey-Cinnamon Sweet Potato Fries were truly special. I'm going to try another location next time and see how it goes. At least I know what to order!

Yelp
My husband, a couple of friends and I were headed to a Sunday night concert at SDSU Viejas Arena recently, which I'd never been to, and our friend suggested we go to Eureka! for dinner beforehand. I'd been to the Carlsbad location before and had enjoyed it, so we all agreed. We arrived about an hour before doors, and there was a line of a few parties ahead of us and a few more soon arrived behind us. For a party of 4, we were quoted a 1.5-2 hour wait which was pretty insane considering there were a few empty/emptying tables in the (albeit small) restaurant, but it became quickly evident that lack of staffing was probably the biggest issue. We asked if we could sit at the bar, to which the hostess told us we were welcome to if we could find a spot. We decided it would be fastest to get in and out if we split up, so our two friends sat at one end of the bar while my husband and I snagged two seats at the other end. We had to clear off and wipe down our own counter space, as it still had the remnants of whoever was there before us. It took a solid 7 minutes before the bartender even made her way to us to give us menus, and another 5-7 minutes before we were able to place our drink order. My husband settled on an old fashioned, I ordered a vodka martini. I asked whether they had bleu cheese olives (negative), so regular olives it was. When our drinks arrived I couldn't help but laugh at mine - I'd never had a martini served in anything but a martini glass - it was delivered to me in a tulip glass. Even the stranger next to me leaned over and asked, "is that a.... martini??" Both my husband's cocktail and mine were just "meh," on the next round he ordered a beer and I opted for a seltzer. We ordered our food, the Eureka! American for me ($14.85) and the Fresno Fig ($16.50) for my husband, neither of which come with any side. While we waited we had a front row view to observe the operation behind the bar, which was really chaotic and disorganized. We had people bellying up behind and beside us trying to place a drink order, and the bartenders would inform them - in a tone that made it clear they had very little patience left - they needed to proceed to the outside bar on the opposite side to place a drink order. Many of the patrons were visibly irritated and confused, I assume because they'd been waiting at their table to place a drink order but as we noticed from the jump, the staffing was inadequate so they decided to take it on themselves. Our burgers were just okay - nothing special and my husband insisted even after turning his burger open-faced that there was little to no fig marmalade or much of any of the other ingredients he was looking forward to. My burger was pretty straightforward, but came at the wrong temperature - I requested medium-well and it was medium-rare, but based on the chaos and understaffing we had witnessed all night I wasn't about to complain. We paid our bill as quickly as possible, and got the heck outta there. Definitely not a great experience and if I knew then what I know now, we would've picked an entirely different restaurant to dine at, even if it weren't walking distance to the venue like Eureka! is. If I were to dine here again, it would be only if I had 2+ hours of time to kill so we didn't have to rush amidst chaos, and maybe we could actually be seated WITH our friends and better enjoy our experience.

Yelp
I get the overall rating of Eureka at SDSU, I would say the food is 3.5 but overall it's your typical American burger dining experience. The best thing Eureka has going for itself is the appetizers like the Brussel sprouts. However----for this location the service was not that great---it does get crowded but when we went in the afternoon the food came out a various times and we didn't get appetizers first. I did have a better experience at Eureka at UTC mall. The food was good, I got a blackened salmon over salad---the location is great for students---but the price not so much for students. The salmon over salad with everything came out closer to $20. The Dorito chips and corn were a nice touch to the salad. The inside of the place looked well kept and I can see how many would come here to grab a quick drink instead of food.

Yelp
What a great experience at this restaurant! Happy hour ends at 6P and we got in there at about 550p. We ordered from Dylan at the bar and then connected with Nathan who was the GM. Great attitudes and even better service. We sat around the fire, which wasn't really a fire, cause it was broken, but all in all it was a fantastic experience. We'll come back to this place because the food was tasty and they're working on improving it as it sees a lot of action from the SDSU student students.

Yelp
Living so close I'm not really sure why I don't make it to Eureka! but in the same breath, I'm not sure that it's really the type of place that would be a comfortable hangout spot, for me at least. Sure, I'm a dive bar guy but that doesn't mean I can't step it up every once in a while and Eureka! isn't a bad choice for exactly that, an occasional addition to my roster. Hey, Tuesday is still half price wine night and you really can't beat it. Both the glasses of wine and the bottles are discounted and their selection is pretty good and affordable even before the discounts. The food has always been pretty average but then again I don't really eat to much when I go to Eureka!. My most recent trip had me diving into the chicken lettuce wraps and a side of the charred green beans. The chicken in the lettuce wraps comes cubed and not ground like some of our favorite Asian places, which was nice. Showed better quality, I suppose. The green beans on the other hand were inconsistent from one bean to the next. I'd say about 1/3 of them were "charred" the other third borderline raw, and the other third somewhere in the middle. I'm sure when prepared correctly that this is a pretty solid side dish. All in all, not a bad spot to have within striking distance.

Yelp
We decided to give it one more shot. Still a little chaotic for the seating situation, but we eventually got in. Service was good and attentive. The food took a little while to get out. We ordered the tomato soup which was OK and the salmon surprisingly was really good and moist. Overall, the experience was better than the first but again can be better overall.

Yelp
Just a super chill vibe, especially on a warm evening. During the warm days they'll open up the side wall so every table feels like the outdoors. The fig burger was tasty and we also had a beer flight where we loved three of the four drinks. Altogether happy that Eureka is within walking distance of our house because it makes me smile every time I visit.

Yelp
I was visiting the area and decided to stop into Eureka for some drinks and food. Since it was my first time, I didn't know what to expect but the service was outstanding. I believe my server was Kinu, and she did a great job helping us choose what to order. When she went on break, another server, Lilly, stepped in and continued checking on us to make sure everything was perfect. The place has a fun college vibe with a younger crowd, and the atmosphere is lively without being overwhelming. Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area.

sophia e.

Yelp
It was the same as every other time, except my favorite brussels sprouts were too big and still hard unfortunately. Next time, i'll ask if they can be cut into smaller pieces or cooked longer.

Yelp
Eureka! serves up some seriously delicious food. We tried the Mac N' Cheese Balls, which were amazing, along with the Caesar Salad and Al Pastor Tacos. The Fish and Chips (not pictured) were an absolute favorite--crispy and flavorful! To top it off, we had their carrot cake (also not pictured), which came in a sharable slice and was so tasty. The vibe here is chill and laid-back, with a choice of outdoor patio or indoor seating. Shoutout to Emely, who was super nice, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful in answering all our questions about the dishes. Highly recommend checking out Eureka!--the food and service are both fantastic!

Yelp
..... BOURBON BARRRL CAKE OS CRAZY GOOD!!! And the cowboy boy burger is amazing as well. This is a great spot for quick family eat out. We will be back!'

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal at Eureka the day after Thanksgiving. Our server Justin was top notch. He has a great knowledge of the menu and made some delicious choices for starters. Very personable. Very nice patio.
google avatar

Jordyn J.

Yelp
Honestly, would love to give this place 5 stars for the food, HOWEVER, the service is soooo consistently bad it's hard to enjoy the experience. In order to receive service you'll need to personally ask for each refill, new item, or even for the check. Even then, you'll wait about 30 min to get what you need. And it's not like it was busy, the place was almost empty. The happy hour and food options are wonderful.. just really hoping they'll step up the service and make the experience even better!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in before the SDSU basketball game for some apps and sandwiches. The food was good, the beer was cold, and the service was great. It got busy as the game got closer, but our server continued to check on us and kept us updated on the timing of our food. Overall, a really solid pre-game spot.
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Amazing service, and great food! Lucas was very accommodating to our table, and ensured that we had a delightful time! I would definitely recommend any of their burgers or wings. Will be coming back!! :)
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
Definitely NOT a sports bar. No sound on even for Aztecs basketball games. Nice open atmosphere...great view of campus. Pleasant service, but our bartender wasn't completely familiar with his inventory.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
I did not apparent the portion size of the veggie tacos for their price. I got three tiny street tacos that were not filling enough at all. Because the lack of protein, I really believed they would have given a bigger portion size of veggie to make up for it. I was not impressed with the flavor of them either. They have limited vegetarian options. I think that eureka is over priced for what it is. However, they did have a cocktail with pandan in it and it was delicious. But that's the only thing I would go back for
google avatar

Abigail M.

Yelp
My family and I always love coming to Eureka! The brussel sprouts are our favorite because they are so flavorful and the sweet potato fries are delicious. Every time my mom comes, she adjusts her order like crazy but they always are able to accommodate her haha. We love sitting outside but bring a jacket because it's usually always cold in the shade.
google avatar

Grace F.

Yelp
Food is pretty good with a solid choice of selections. The service however is extremely slow, I have been to other Eureka's at other locations and nothing is as slow as the one on College Ave. I ordered a side of ranch with my burger and they gave me ketchup, by the time they brought out the ranch it was already 25 minutes later so there was no point anymore. Service was awful and slow (however, food is good).
google avatar

Mazy B.

Yelp
The lavender iced tea is to die for. I came for lunch, stayed & will be back just for that iced tea. Would love to try other dishes, as they all sound great, and the menu is limited - a telltale sign of good quality. Very cute & gastropub vibe w/ a retro/industrial feel. Patio is nice on a nice day, just watch out for the meat bees. Staff is nice & accommodating, and offers good input on dishes & drinks & pretty helpful. Really good eats & excellent drinks!

Jessie W.

Yelp
Hostess was extremely rude and gave us attitude once seated. Left before even served. Awful experience will not be coming back.
google avatar

Marie C.

Yelp
Parking is pretty bad, unless you go to SDSU already this is a pretty convenient spot to hang out and have some grub. Right around the corner from TJ's. Wasn't impressed with the food much. The entrees do not come with any sides so you have to order that separate, which is pretty pricey in my opinion. They have really good specials though esp. for drinks.
google avatar

Pablo M.

Yelp
I usually love this place but the service is so hot/cold. My favorite manager was off today and it showed. Someone else was managing instead of the regular Tuesday bartender and the service and vibe was def. "meh." I was ignored then I waited forever to order and then receive my food. I think it was sitting there waiting to be delivered. Rather than an apology I got an excuse. I've worked in restaurants, and I'm pretty sure neither was that true, nor should you make excuses. 'Say you're sorry and make it up to people. That's it.
google avatar

Alon B.

Yelp
Eureka has quickly become one of our go-to spots. My wife is obsessed with the fig jam burger. It's her absolute favorite and never disappoints. Honestly, everything we've tried here has been consistently great. The flavors are bold, portions are solid, and the presentation is always on point. I also really appreciate their rotating beer selection. There's always something interesting to try, whether you're into IPAs, stouts, or something a little more unique. The vibe is relaxed, the staff is friendly, and the service is usually quick even when they're busy. Definitely a place we keep coming back to.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
The food is really good, really good. It is upper level bar and grill, staff are nice and helpful. Greats drinks and menu, perfect for hanging out. Patio is superb.

Emily G.

Yelp
Yummy food, we got the ceasar salad wrap, steak frites, and a side of fries to split. Hit the spot for both of us. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Jesse R.

Yelp
Food was good but priced a little high. Selection was decent so preview the menu before you go. The service was good and friendly. The ambiance is why you come here. Placed steps away from the SDSU campus I'd suggest coming here for a small bite and some very unique drinks.

Gaelen K.

Yelp
Love this place, great location on campus. I had very good service and our server Miguel was very knowledgeable on the menu and had great recommendations. I will be coming back
google avatar

Shelby B.

Yelp
Eureka is all looks but not much substance. Their dishes look fantastic and they do an excellent job with plating. The ambiance and decorations of the restaurant are really nice and are an upscale alternative to other restaurants nearby. However, everything is a little bland and not at all what you would expect by looking at the food or restaurant. I found the fries, especially, to be SO disappointing. The blandness stands out even more considering the prices, which would lead you to believe you were about to be impressed. Service was meh - generally quite slow and inattentive.

Angelisa Kayla I.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the serve Ki was an amazing waiter/server and was very attentive to our table. Will definitely come again!!!
google avatar

Aidee P.

Yelp
We were near SDSU for our sons football camp and decided to try this spot for lunch. They were not busy and we got sat pretty fast. The drinks were delicious and the food was good. It took a while for our food to get to us but we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and patiently waited. Not a bad spot to stop by for a drink and a bite.
google avatar

Katherine T.

Yelp
The staff can be super friendly, but sometimes they'll just ignore your table. They recently added more items to the menu, which is great for groups since there's a lot to choose from. The food is pretty decent, with the burgers and Ahi Poke Stack being the highlights. I really like sitting outside because the lighting is nicer and they have heaters for when it gets chilly.

Charlie Y.

Yelp
Food was very good and the service was even better. Thank you Ki for being one of the better servers here. 4 stars though cause food took a while but that's not Ki's fault
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
I ordered the fried chicken sandwhich with the aioli on the side. they brought it out with the aioli on the sandwich so i sent it back. it came back with no aioli on the side. the chicken in the sandwhich was paper thin and had 3 times the breading as chicken. the fries were okay but they give you a tiny portion. the server was okay but everyone was monotone and had no emotion at all.

Kyle G.

Yelp
Great experience. The food was awesome, wait time was ideal, and our server Miguel was incredible! He seemed very knowledgeable about the menu so we asked for recommendations. He recommended the brussel sprouts and spicy chicken sandwich and it did not disappoint. Overall such a good experience and will definitely be back.
google avatar

Claudia S.

Yelp
I was seated with my group quickly but it took a while to get service. The server apologized and the wait to order didn't matter since the food was served fresh and really quick even though we customized our entrees. I don't blame the servers though as it's on campus and I can imagine a lot of student workers call out on the weekend. I don't know what's the sweet and mildly spicy sauce they use for the crispy Brussels sprouts but they're wonderful!!! The mac and cheese balls are cheesy and delicious and huge in proportion for an appetizer. My sisters got the fish and chips and enjoyed it as they stated the fish was perfectly fried and not overdone. The truffle fries were thick and soft loved them. As for my Napa chicken sandwich was divine. Love that they serve gluten free buns. The pesto was perfectly fresh and it was nice that they didn't fuss about me not wanting the havarti cheese. The ginger like soda is to die for I got two!!! I was also happy they offer happy hour and took advantage of the industry margarita. I was glad the pineapple didn't make it too sweet most likely because the ginger balanced out the flavor. The only issue are the flies in the outdoor seating area. They should invest in some fans but I digress. I highly recommend this restaurant when attending a Viejas arena event as it's walkable.
google avatar

Audra H.

Yelp
Stopped by here around 4pm on a Wednesday. I was coming to a concert at Viejas arena and came by early so I could get parking. Found Eureka on Yelp and stopped in. They have happy hour specials from 3-6! Huge bonus. So I got a beer (a Mexican lager) for $5.50. I also got a burger and fries on the happy hour special for $12. Decent deal and the burger and fries were good. Cooked as I requested. Service was good when I got my beers (prior to food) but after they got busy it took a tad longer to get my food order in. Food arrived within a decent time frame and I ate every last bit! Ambiance has a spin of causal bar and upscale to it. I would definitely recommend this place!

Emma S.

Yelp
I used to love this place and I would get the steak salad every time because it was SO GOOD. Now they took it off their menu and I'm never going back. Their service also sucks.

Kathy V.

Yelp
4 stars for the food 0 stars for the service A group of us (7 people) went here for happy hour on a Thursday about 4:30pm. The place was about 1/4 full - pretty quiet - and there was plenty of staff on hand. I say this because there is zero justification for the terrible service we received. The server took our drink orders and we also asked for water for the table. The server said they had been out of ginger were out of ginger for several days so two people in our group couldn't get the drinks they wanted. It took about 15 minutes to get the drinks, but no water came. We tried to flag down one of the bartenders and although we made eye contact, he completely ignored us. The server came back about 10 minutes after that to take our food orders and we reminded her about our water. She apologized. Then we waited another 20 minutes or so and still no water (about 45 minutes total by that point). I finally went to the bar where the bar staff were taking shots. I asked for water and it finally came out about 5 minutes later. Eventually everyone's food came out except mine. I waited a few minutes thinking it would be coming. After about 5-10 minutes I went back to the bar where I asked my server about my food. She went to check on it and said it was hiding behind the fries or some lame excuse. Only after that were we asked if we needed refills or anything else (after being there about 1hr 20min). We finished our food and asked for the check. The food and drinks were great, but the service was so bad I cannot recommend this place to anyone. It is also unacceptable for the bar staff to be drinking on the job which probably contributed to the horrible service. Our server was pleasant enough, but the delays and lack of checking in regularly was unacceptable, especially given how slow it was and how many staff members there were.

Yelp
College town. In the SDSU campus . Nice vibe , super chill. They have the outside heaters on and the pit fire going . The day is too warm for that , however , I'll give them a pass because I'm in a celebrating mood. Here for my daughter 's grad school commencement

Daisy M.

Yelp
This was a great place to grab a happy hour meal and beer in an open space with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly service. Giant tables for friends and family and the perfect environment to watch any of your sports teams win
google avatar

Eliza J.

Yelp
Food choices always delectable to me. I really enjoy the setting and ambience. I give it the 3 California C's; Cool, Casual and comfortable. Service is nice. Very attentive. College cheerfulness abounds. I like the upbeat and freshness. This Eureka location hits Gold!
google avatar

Stacey M.

Yelp
Overall a great place to stop and grab a burger or some other brewery food! Okay beer and wine/cocktail selection. We've been to the UTC location and that selection has a much broader menu! During events such as concerts, the drink menu here is abbreviated and they just serve a few beers and a few wine options. Not bad but a little disappointing if you're not here for the event. Service was great though!
google avatar

Sara O.

Yelp
Not so great customer service and food quality is ok. Mostly fried food, not so healthy options. Patio is nice.

Yelp
Decent food - nothing really special. Close to campus was a bonus, but again, service wasn't the greatest and food was OK

Yelp
Was looking for a place to have a bite before concert, couldnt get reservation. But able to find a place to sit, with help from Ben, had a great meal and fun atmosphere, we had the fig burger and truffle fries, both were really good. Shout out to Ben for helping us out!!
