The Best Restaurants and Bars Near San Diego State University (SDSU) | Eater San Diego

"Within walking distance of the Aztec Union, this popular chain restaurant is known for its creative burgers and a well-stocked bar, with lots of beer taps and an impressive selection of small-batch whiskey. With a daily 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. “hoppy hour,” it’s a popular spot for pre-gaming before a show at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre." - Candice Woo

Google
Silvan was an awesome waiter, bartender and comedian. Am always tickled to be carded! We just stopped by for quick appetizers and beers—and were not disappointed. Both the fried pickles and Parmesan truffle fries were outstanding. I look forward to another visit before too long.

Google
**4 Stars (Food & Service: 5 Stars, Atmosphere: 2 Stars)** Eureka! College Ave definitely delivers on the food and service. Our server was fantastic – attentive, friendly, and made great recommendations. Every dish we ordered was top-notch, easily a 5-star experience. However, the atmosphere unfortunately fell short. While I absolutely loved the potential of the large windows at sunset, the windows themselves were quite disappointing. There were noticeable cobwebs, streaks and dirt on the entrance and surrounding windows, and once you spot them, it's hard to ignore. Clean windows can make such a difference to a restaurant's first impression and overall ambiance. Hopefully, they'll address this to truly elevate the entire dining experience to match the quality of their food and service.

Quick dinner on way to a concert... sat outside, food was very tasty, & arrived quickly.

Google
Nice outdoor seating area. Located right next to SDSU campus. Great drink selection. Food is American, a bit heavy and greasy for my tastes. It’s a great gathering spot for a large group. They offer 1 hour validation for parking structure next to Trader Jo’s.

Google
We came here for a family gathering after my daughters graduation. The food was spot on and the drinks were AMAZING!! The atmosphere was fun and inviting. Exactly what you would expect in a college atmosphere. Shout out to my daughter, DILLON, who is the bartender there. She showed her skills and made she We had a great time.

Google
I paid $51, for One person. Including tip. I ordered: Build your own flight (has to be whiskey only +1 moonshine, optional) , Cesar Salad, Half Portion +Steak Rare. With 5.25 side order Mac n cheese balls. Order of 3. Will return again. Thanks cool server with the frizzy hair, the slender American female whose clearly in charge .

The fries were cold and the burgers were too oily for my liking.

Went on a Saturday afternoon. Got outdoor seating and the crowd was chill. I like they have non alcoholic cocktails and a beer option. Staff was friendly. Only got the ahi poke stack and it was really good. Surprisingly nice presentation too. Would definitely go back and try the other food options.

Yelp
Eureka has quickly become one of our go-to spots. My wife is obsessed with the fig jam burger. It's her absolute favorite and never disappoints. Honestly, everything we've tried here has been consistently great. The flavors are bold, portions are solid, and the presentation is always on point. I also really appreciate their rotating beer selection. There's always something interesting to try, whether you're into IPAs, stouts, or something a little more unique. The vibe is relaxed, the staff is friendly, and the service is usually quick even when they're busy. Definitely a place we keep coming back to.
google avatar

Yelp
Just a super chill vibe, especially on a warm evening. During the warm days they'll open up the side wall so every table feels like the outdoors. The fig burger was tasty and we also had a beer flight where we loved three of the four drinks. Altogether happy that Eureka is within walking distance of our house because it makes me smile every time I visit.

Yelp
EUREKA @ SDSU This place was an awful experience. We walked in and spoke with the guy helping us in the front, and he said it'll be 5 minutes of a wait and to stand on the side to wait. As 5 other people also waited alongside us, after hearing the same thing that the wait would be short. About 10 minutes goes by, and I start glancing at where our previous front desk worker went to ask for the status of our seating, we turn to see him eating a full plate of food with 2 other Eureka workers. Just right at a table in front of the guests. This was in disbelief, and very extremely unprofessional. Moving forward, we get another guy at the desk to help us, and he then asks us what we needed, and we asked the status for the table. He didn't know what we were saying because the previous worker didn't even care to write our names down. They had no organization in this. We finally got seated, another 10-15 minute wait for the server to come. For all the lost time, we just ended up getting some dessert and leaving. It was my birthday week and the server was nice to give a birthday scoop of ice cream. Overall, don't recommend coming to this location.

Yelp
..... BOURBON BARRRL CAKE OS CRAZY GOOD!!! And the cowboy boy burger is amazing as well. This is a great spot for quick family eat out. We will be back!'

Yelp
4 stars for the food 0 stars for the service A group of us (7 people) went here for happy hour on a Thursday about 4:30pm. The place was about 1/4 full - pretty quiet - and there was plenty of staff on hand. I say this because there is zero justification for the terrible service we received. The server took our drink orders and we also asked for water for the table. The server said they had been out of ginger were out of ginger for several days so two people in our group couldn't get the drinks they wanted. It took about 15 minutes to get the drinks, but no water came. We tried to flag down one of the bartenders and although we made eye contact, he completely ignored us. The server came back about 10 minutes after that to take our food orders and we reminded her about our water. She apologized. Then we waited another 20 minutes or so and still no water (about 45 minutes total by that point). I finally went to the bar where the bar staff were taking shots. I asked for water and it finally came out about 5 minutes later. Eventually everyone's food came out except mine. I waited a few minutes thinking it would be coming. After about 5-10 minutes I went back to the bar where I asked my server about my food. She went to check on it and said it was hiding behind the fries or some lame excuse. Only after that were we asked if we needed refills or anything else (after being there about 1hr 20min). We finished our food and asked for the check. The food and drinks were great, but the service was so bad I cannot recommend this place to anyone. It is also unacceptable for the bar staff to be drinking on the job which probably contributed to the horrible service. Our server was pleasant enough, but the delays and lack of checking in regularly was unacceptable, especially given how slow it was and how many staff members there were.
google avatar

Jordyn J.

Yelp
Honestly, would love to give this place 5 stars for the food, HOWEVER, the service is soooo consistently bad it's hard to enjoy the experience. In order to receive service you'll need to personally ask for each refill, new item, or even for the check. Even then, you'll wait about 30 min to get what you need. And it's not like it was busy, the place was almost empty. The happy hour and food options are wonderful.. just really hoping they'll step up the service and make the experience even better!

Yelp
Eureka! serves up some seriously delicious food. We tried the Mac N' Cheese Balls, which were amazing, along with the Caesar Salad and Al Pastor Tacos. The Fish and Chips (not pictured) were an absolute favorite--crispy and flavorful! To top it off, we had their carrot cake (also not pictured), which came in a sharable slice and was so tasty. The vibe here is chill and laid-back, with a choice of outdoor patio or indoor seating. Shoutout to Emely, who was super nice, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful in answering all our questions about the dishes. Highly recommend checking out Eureka!--the food and service are both fantastic!

Yelp
Parking is pretty bad, unless you go to SDSU already this is a pretty convenient spot to hang out and have some grub. Right around the corner from TJ's. Wasn't impressed with the food much. The entrees do not come with any sides so you have to order that separate, which is pretty pricey in my opinion. They have really good specials though esp. for drinks.
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
Definitely NOT a sports bar. No sound on even for Aztecs basketball games. Nice open atmosphere...great view of campus. Pleasant service, but our bartender wasn't completely familiar with his inventory.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
I did not apparent the portion size of the veggie tacos for their price. I got three tiny street tacos that were not filling enough at all. Because the lack of protein, I really believed they would have given a bigger portion size of veggie to make up for it. I was not impressed with the flavor of them either. They have limited vegetarian options. I think that eureka is over priced for what it is. However, they did have a cocktail with pandan in it and it was delicious. But that's the only thing I would go back for
google avatar

Grace F.

Yelp
Food is pretty good with a solid choice of selections. The service however is extremely slow, I have been to other Eureka's at other locations and nothing is as slow as the one on College Ave. I ordered a side of ranch with my burger and they gave me ketchup, by the time they brought out the ranch it was already 25 minutes later so there was no point anymore. Service was awful and slow (however, food is good).
google avatar

Mazy B.

Yelp
The lavender iced tea is to die for. I came for lunch, stayed & will be back just for that iced tea. Would love to try other dishes, as they all sound great, and the menu is limited - a telltale sign of good quality. Very cute & gastropub vibe w/ a retro/industrial feel. Patio is nice on a nice day, just watch out for the meat bees. Staff is nice & accommodating, and offers good input on dishes & drinks & pretty helpful. Really good eats & excellent drinks!

Yelp
Was looking for a place to have a bite before concert, couldnt get reservation. But able to find a place to sit, with help from Ben, had a great meal and fun atmosphere, we had the fig burger and truffle fries, both were really good. Shout out to Ben for helping us out!!
google avatar

Jesse R.

Yelp
Food was good but priced a little high. Selection was decent so preview the menu before you go. The service was good and friendly. The ambiance is why you come here. Placed steps away from the SDSU campus I'd suggest coming here for a small bite and some very unique drinks.
google avatar

Aidee P.

Yelp
We were near SDSU for our sons football camp and decided to try this spot for lunch. They were not busy and we got sat pretty fast. The drinks were delicious and the food was good. It took a while for our food to get to us but we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and patiently waited. Not a bad spot to stop by for a drink and a bite.
google avatar

Katherine T.

Yelp
The staff can be super friendly, but sometimes they'll just ignore your table. They recently added more items to the menu, which is great for groups since there's a lot to choose from. The food is pretty decent, with the burgers and Ahi Poke Stack being the highlights. I really like sitting outside because the lighting is nicer and they have heaters for when it gets chilly.
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
I ordered the fried chicken sandwhich with the aioli on the side. they brought it out with the aioli on the sandwich so i sent it back. it came back with no aioli on the side. the chicken in the sandwhich was paper thin and had 3 times the breading as chicken. the fries were okay but they give you a tiny portion. the server was okay but everyone was monotone and had no emotion at all.

Yelp
My family and I always love coming to Eureka! The brussel sprouts are our favorite because they are so flavorful and the sweet potato fries are delicious. Every time my mom comes, she adjusts her order like crazy but they always are able to accommodate her haha. We love sitting outside but bring a jacket because it's usually always cold in the shade.
google avatar

Valerie G.

Yelp
College town. In the SDSU campus . Nice vibe , super chill. They have the outside heaters on and the pit fire going . The day is too warm for that , however , I'll give them a pass because I'm in a celebrating mood. Here for my daughter 's grad school commencement

Yelp
Stopped by here around 4pm on a Wednesday. I was coming to a concert at Viejas arena and came by early so I could get parking. Found Eureka on Yelp and stopped in. They have happy hour specials from 3-6! Huge bonus. So I got a beer (a Mexican lager) for $5.50. I also got a burger and fries on the happy hour special for $12. Decent deal and the burger and fries were good. Cooked as I requested. Service was good when I got my beers (prior to food) but after they got busy it took a tad longer to get my food order in. Food arrived within a decent time frame and I ate every last bit! Ambiance has a spin of causal bar and upscale to it. I would definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Shelby B.

Yelp
Eureka is all looks but not much substance. Their dishes look fantastic and they do an excellent job with plating. The ambiance and decorations of the restaurant are really nice and are an upscale alternative to other restaurants nearby. However, everything is a little bland and not at all what you would expect by looking at the food or restaurant. I found the fries, especially, to be SO disappointing. The blandness stands out even more considering the prices, which would lead you to believe you were about to be impressed. Service was meh - generally quite slow and inattentive.

Yelp
I was seated with my group quickly but it took a while to get service. The server apologized and the wait to order didn't matter since the food was served fresh and really quick even though we customized our entrees. I don't blame the servers though as it's on campus and I can imagine a lot of student workers call out on the weekend. I don't know what's the sweet and mildly spicy sauce they use for the crispy Brussels sprouts but they're wonderful!!! The mac and cheese balls are cheesy and delicious and huge in proportion for an appetizer. My sisters got the fish and chips and enjoyed it as they stated the fish was perfectly fried and not overdone. The truffle fries were thick and soft loved them. As for my Napa chicken sandwich was divine. Love that they serve gluten free buns. The pesto was perfectly fresh and it was nice that they didn't fuss about me not wanting the havarti cheese. The ginger like soda is to die for I got two!!! I was also happy they offer happy hour and took advantage of the industry margarita. I was glad the pineapple didn't make it too sweet most likely because the ginger balanced out the flavor. The only issue are the flies in the outdoor seating area. They should invest in some fans but I digress. I highly recommend this restaurant when attending a Viejas arena event as it's walkable.

Yelp
Not so great customer service and food quality is ok. Mostly fried food, not so healthy options. Patio is nice.

Yelp
There's nothing like having a drink so close to class! This is a great place to meet up with other students, or networks, especially with being so close. I love their happy hour menu, and their fries are absolutely delicious (truffle). I've also gotten their burger that is on happy hour, and it was genuinely filling and yummy! This place has such a casual vibe to it, it's such a fun place to go with friends! Bartenders are amazing too :) Give it a shot! Cheers xx

Yelp
I came here with my baby and dog and sat outside, and it took over 15 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge me. I feel invisible. I used to be a server for Eureka in Woodland Hills about 10 years ago, and I remember them saying that we had to greet customers within a minute and 30 seconds, ideally a minute. Even if you were super busy and couldn't help them, we were instructed to say at least, "I'll be right with you." I can't believe it just took that long to get a menu. Anthony did apologize for the wait and said there was a mixup with stations, so I appreciate that he acknowledged that I was waiting. But I'm still disappointed. I can tell he's trying hard to make up for it by connecting with my dog; he has the same German shepherd mix-looking dog, which is super cute and sweet. He brought treats and water for my dog, which was also very nice. I appreciate his customer service now that I've been greeted, but I think Eureka could do better. It's a little after 5 o'clock on a Tuesday, it's not busy at all so the service should be much better. I'm sorry to be a pain about it, but it just sucked when all these servers walked right past me and didn't even look me in the eye when I was looking right at them.
google avatar

Yelp
I feel like normally you wouldn't go back to a restaurant you already gave a 1 star review but I went back, this time ordered take out and it was just as bad. The guy who gave me my order looked at the bag said my name but when I went back home they had given me someone else's order. So I called waked all the way back to the restaurant and they gave me my order with no compensation. Finally came home again opened my food and I was given no sauce for my salad and my salmon was made wrong with no sauce on top. Kinda disappointed because the food is really good when it is made right but I paid $40 and received the wrong thing twice.
google avatar

Eliza J.

Yelp
Food choices always delectable to me. I really enjoy the setting and ambience. I give it the 3 California C's; Cool, Casual and comfortable. Service is nice. Very attentive. College cheerfulness abounds. I like the upbeat and freshness. This Eureka location hits Gold!
google avatar

Stacey M.

Yelp
Overall a great place to stop and grab a burger or some other brewery food! Okay beer and wine/cocktail selection. We've been to the UTC location and that selection has a much broader menu! During events such as concerts, the drink menu here is abbreviated and they just serve a few beers and a few wine options. Not bad but a little disappointing if you're not here for the event. Service was great though!
google avatar

Alejandro R.

Yelp
I had the double smash burger and it was amazing. Patties cooked perfectly and our waitress was attentive. Good music and good beer as well, I had a Japanese lager and it paired perfectly with the burger.

Yelp
Wonderful service! Great food! Feb 9th we had a wonderful experience on the patio for my husband's birthday. Our dog was comfortable and every staff member was lovely.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Great food. Amazing atmosphere. Our waiter was Maison, he was really nice and easy to talk to. Love their cocktails. We started of with the daiquiri and spa day. Daiquiri was awesome. The Campfire and Uncharted forest both amazing. I had the Fresno fig burger and my husband the Veggie beet burger, both Great though beet should hahave had more sauce and the fig needed more of jam. Definitely will come back and try other items. All was delicious.

Yelp
First time and wasn't sure what to expect. But they had a full liquor/bar, food, and sports on tv's I don't like to eat and drink at the same time but was a little hungry so I opted for their fries with a dipping sauce and just a side salad. Both were very good too! My friend got a burger and some Mac and cheese ball bites? I tried some of those cheese balls because they looked pretty good and they were. I just got a couple of beers and guest got two speciality cocktails. When we got there, there was maybe a handful of tables and guests being helped. Sometime while there, someone sent an invitation out because it got very busy very fast. Staff appeared unorganized and annoyed. Almost as if they didn't know what they were doing. Also, no Padre game was playing but the Red Sox game was on. We asked to change the channel but I don't think they could. I would go back if I have the chance. Keep up the good work! ***UPDATE*** Manager replied to my review and explained the reason for the unexpected rush and staff appearing unprepared. Let's just say for someone who has worked in the service industry for 3/4 of their working career, I get it, it makes sense, and their star rating has been updated! Now go eat some good food and enjoy the ambiance!

Yelp
Came for happy hour since we had time. We ended up getting the mac and cheese balls, Brussel sprouts, and spinach dip. The mac and cheese balls were a solid pick! It came with some ranch on the side. The Brussel sprouts were also in a sweet and spicy sauce which was good. The biggest letdown was the spinach and artichoke dip. It was bland without much artichokes in it either. The chips they were served with felt like they were way oversalted too. The manager was nice enough to replace the dish for us, so we opted for the fried cauliflower. Keep in mind there are dried tuna shavings on it so they are NOT vegan/vegetarian friendly. This wasn't really great tasting either. The waiters were super nice and helpful. It can get pretty busy here so keep in mind if visiting!
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
I think the key to this spot is knowing when school is in session for SDSU. It can be really packed with students, which if you are a student that's great, and if not, well.... The cocktails are usually really good here, and honestly I love the food! They have a really nice selection, a little something for everyone. There is a mix of indoor and outdoor seating and also a bar and picnic table area if you're looking for a place to watch the game. I LOVE the ahi tuna stack and the fried pickles. The seared tuna salad is pretty good too! The last few times I have been we had great servers as well.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
This place is great! I love that it's half in-, half out-door, so depending on your mood and weather, you can choose whether to be in the elements or not. The bar is set up in such a way that the bartenders would be serving both indoor and outdoor bar patrons. Obviously, the cocktails and the whisky selection are the sh** here. You can't go wrong with their libations. They also have really good local beer selection (hello, stouts! Not many places stock up on stouts, let alone the good ones). I had the crispy brussels sprouts and they really delighted my palate. They were crispy, slightly charred and lightly coated with some kind of sweet, citrus-y sauce. I could eat a mountain of these on my own. One thing I don't like about this place and this is no fault of the restaurant is the parking. It's near SDSU, which means yup, no street parking/free parking around; your only choice is to park at the parking structure. And you only get 1 hour with validation. Uhhh.. it's not easy to enjoy your drinks when you only got an hour! I want my second drink!
google avatar

Brooke P.

Yelp
Great beer menu! Food is ok. Had a garden salad last time, it was fresh. It was decent. This time, had the Caesar. Least impressive salad I've ever had. Not worth eating but at a conference nearby and nothing else close with decent food so I ate it. Service was ok. 1st visit, service was great! 2nd, meh. Not sure I'd go back except just for a beer. Beautiful setting, they did that super well. But, as we were there in a mid- afternoon they were getting set up for a dinner service dragging tables across the patio (one guy) instead of getting help with the others just hanging out. The screeching sound was ridiculous. No one paying any mind to the experience of the customer. Meh. I really wanted to love this place since the setting was so good but...alas, nah. If you're in the area, and want to check it out at least for a beer...Sterling was a fantastic server. He did a great job connecting with us on our 1st visit. Our 2nd visit was disappointing. Both my husband and I are former restaurant owners. Hate posting poor reviews- come on guys! So much potential here! You can do better!!!!

Ryan M.

Yelp
Been here a ton of times, food is great. Tonight was understaffed. We waited 25 minutes to be sat (ordered drinks at bar and got them right away.) after getting sat we asked to order another round and waiter took our order and said he would be back with water. 20 minutes later I had to track him down to ask if he was still bringing our water & drinks. He said the bar was too backed up... I looked over to the bar and they were just chatting it up with customers.... He must have never taken our order. We asked how long food would take and he told us we probably better to just go else where. Just a joke....

Yelp
Came here for happy hour on a Tuesday with 3 other friends. They're really not known for their service and why I thought this time would be different was beyond me. We were sat at a table outside and it took about 12 minutes for the bartender to come and ask if our server has came yet which we said no to so she helped us out instead and took our drink orders. We had also asked for waters, but she didn't give us that until at least 15 minutes after we had asked. And this is an issue I see often whenever I've gone to Eureka, the glasses always look spotty and cloudy. We got cauliflower bites which were pretty good, it came with ranch but the portion size was not enough for two people. Their Brussel sprouts was really good though, I liked the glaze that came with it. My table had ordered a beet burger and the regular Eureka burger medium. It took about 20-25 minutes for the beet burger to come out and 30 for the Eureka burger. I wish they had a bigger selection of beers for happy hour, but for $5.50/pint it's pretty solid.

Yelp
Sadly the service was exactly what to expect from over staffed uninterested college age employees. Sat at the bar, original bartender was nice and attentive and got us settled. She then disappeared without letting us know and no one picked us up until I had to flag someone down. While there were 6-7 employees just standing around talking to each other. Finally ordered food and when it came out, No one checked on us if we needed anything, which we did. We just ate what we had and about 5 min after we ate, someone walked over and asked if everything was to our stratification. I kindly replied, yes the food was excellent, which it was. I would suggest better staff training focusing on customer attention and service. I would come back for the food and beer selection but expecting poor service.

Yelp
Good food. Kinda pricey but that's expected given the location. Decent amount of alcohol to choose from. Menu selection is a little small. Nice aesthetics.

Yelp
This place is a late-night gem and my savior recently after attending a game at the Snapdragon stadium. Food & Drinks: I absolutely loved their Mac N' Cheese balls, Truffle cheese fries, and Jalapeno egg burger. They also have a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. I liked their Young and din love, very refreshing. Service: We went in around 10:30 and were welcomed by the staff. We were a big group so they promptly put together some tables for us. Our server was very sweet and also helped with a few substitutions. In all: A great late-night spot for some real food. They also have loads of street parking a lot just behind.
google avatar

Jeffrey K.

Yelp
Miguel was fantastic in service and Nick is managing and coordinating like no other ... I felt a bit like it was "concierge" service ... perfect timing on checking-ins and never "wanted" for anything ... AND on game day here at SDSU it is hard to feel that special but they did it!

Yelp
It seems like we're going out to more restaurants these days and It's great to be able to write about wonderful waiters, delicious food and excellent service. The breakfast burrito was yummy and the American hamburger was the perfect size and just hit the spot. We will certainly be back!

Gracie D.

Yelp
I ordered brussel sprouts and a side of chicken to go today and was very disappointed. I am a student at SDSU and have meal plan and eat at Eureka a lot, I love the food. Today I paid $23 for my order and got only 3 pieces of chicken. Although the food is normally very great this was very upsetting.
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
Truffle cheese fries were excellent, super tasty and evenly seasoned and the garlic aoli was a great addition. The double smash burger was just okay. A bit overcooked and lacked any standout flavor. I might try something else again, but probably wouldn't seek it out.

Yelp
This place I have been coming to since they opened. During Covid I was understanding that it was difficult to provide good service. Now it is a management issue with poor staffing and poor service. The food has gone to a lesser quality as well. If you're coming I would recommend going simple with a burger. Otherwise you will probably be disappointed. Sitting at the bar can be frustrating as they are understaffed.

Tracy H.

Yelp
The service was amazing, Trace was our server and he got our food out so fast and was so nice and made conversation with us. He also got the food out to us fast as well and checked up on us constantly whether that was getting sides out for us or refilling our water quickly when it ran out. Overall amazing server, love trace!!

Franco B.

Yelp
Trace was the best server I've ever had. So quick with service and made great conversation, hope to have him every time! If you come here make sure to ask for Trace :)

Sarah M.

Yelp
Funatmosphere! Great place to watch SDSU basketball and football. Restaurant is clean and the food was delicious! Mason was the best server ever!! Shoe or sweet. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
