Gourmand European Deli Review - Richmond - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Whether you’re craving a big bowl of beet soup, various cured meats, or just want to pick up some quality chocolate on the way home, Gourmand Deli has it all. The shop is relatively small and can be easy to miss, but it’s one of our favorite delis in the Richmond and we always end up leaving with way more than we came for. All the staples are here: moskovskaya salami, lots of pickles, and other things like sauerkraut and turnips. They also have kvass, a fermented probiotic drink made from rye bread. The consensus on whether or not it’s good is pretty split, but in case you need a chaser, kompot, a sweet fruit juice, is also a good choice." - Aida Agayeva

European Deli is a true gem! If you're a fan of authentic European flavors, this is a must-visit. Their salami is simply divine – rich, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. And the smoked cheese? Oh my! The perfect balance of smokiness and creamy texture makes it absolutely irresistible. But the deliciousness doesn't stop there. This grocery store is one of my favorites! There is always a large selection of goods and I can always find everything I need. The prices are very reasonable, the store is clean and everything is easy to find. The staff is polite, friendly and always ready to help!!!

Im not sure why other customers had such a bad experience at this store. Maybe I was there at the right time 🙃 . I got chocolate candies, just opened it and they were fresh and delicious. Oreshki just to die for ! So fresh, took me back to my childhood 🤩 Korean carrot salad tasty and fresh! Salo- the best! They have all my favorites 😍 The service was good, and the owner was upfront with the cashier. Both gave me a nice smile, and checking out was a breeze. I'm definitely coming back soon.

Love this place! I usually stop there on my way to Crozet or on the way back home. I presently live in Wilmington NC ( I lived in Midlo for many years)and I need to have my Slavic foods. Everything there is good. I especially like their pierogi. They have different kinds and different companies. My favorites are stuffed with veal. But I also love with mashed potatoes and mushrooms or onions. I always make sure to buy my favorite chocolates which I can mix. Polish sausages are also great. Love the krakowska. Dairy products are yummy. Also love buying their homemade breads. The scent of cookies baking is hard to resist. The people working there are very kind and helpful. It’s always a wonderful experience. Glad I found this store.

Every year before the winter holidays we shop at this store. Among our purchases there are chocolate candies . They are expensive, over $12 per pound, but since the holidays, we buy a lot. Last years, among the fresh candies , there were old ones, but there were not many of them. But this year, it's terrible, every second candy is old, with a white coating on the chocolate and with a taste of the old. Be careful. They mix fresh candies with old ones to sell. Very disappointed!

I went there for the first time on a whim and I was so excited to find foods similar to what i could find in Serbia, so I took my time checking out the selection to really see what they had (it’s quite a bit). However, the ladies behind the counter stared at me and spoke under their breath the entire time, which made me very uncomfortable. Even my partner noticed! Maybe I just went on a bad day but they made us feel very unwelcome. The selection of food and treats is awesome, however and there was so much more I wanted to buy. I don’t want to give a bad review to a small business because they need all the help they can get, but as someone who is also in the foodservice industry, attitude is important.

Fantastic staff, amazing selection, and great location. European Deli has recently become my go to store for my grocery shopping. The store is very well equipped with Russian, Polish, Hungarian and other Eastern European goodies. You can find items that even Wegmans does not carry. Further, European Deli has amazing bakery section, deli, and sea food (eg Herrings). The employees are incredibly friendly and helpful. I always enjoy each and every visit there!!! Further, it is a family-run store. They value their customers! I highly recommend this store for grocery shopping!!!

Yelp
I would like to say that I've lived down the road from this place for 7 years and I have slept on this place hard and if you're reading this, you probably have too. I asked the owners how long they've been here (assuming it was only a few years). This unassuming store has been here for 25 years. I went here on a whim and let me tell you, I will be a frequent customer. This is a hidden gem of a grocery store. Some of the things that caught my eye were: * Imported European butter (high quality butter). * Tons of imported, cured meats * Perogies, meat dumplings, mashed potato dumplings, etc. * A fantastic selection of tasty mustards * Pickled & fermented items such as sauerkraut, pickled vegetables, pepper spreads * A wide variety of tasty jams * Fresh farmer cheeses * Imported Cheeses * Homemade desserts * Homemade, old world, artisan bread * Much more Another person left a comment exclaiming that items here are pricey. I want to share my thoughts and why I think it's 5 stars and not pricey. So, first, I love the salami here. I bought a few kind of Salami but the German Salami is very nice. Now that being said, as of today it's like $20/lb. But, few important things to note. 1) it's Imported from Europe. 2) The richness & complexity of flavor is so much better than your $7.99/lb grocery store chain salami. The flavors are complex and wonderful. It's truly something where you keep wanting more. This is ideal for a charcuterie board or something where you want people to really notice the bold flavors. It is worth the price. Secondly, their homemade desserts are out of this world. I guarantee you that you have had few desserts that are this good. They are unlike the processed junk we get even at nice grocery store bakeries. One bite and you're in heaven. So much so we went back immediately the next day to get more. Third, they are making their own variety of bread loaves. I wish I had gotten a picture but they are as beautiful as they are delicious. This isn't old world bread. Artisan bread. You aren't getting this elsewhere. Overall, the quality of everything is just very good. It's a taste of eastern Europe. It's a treat and a delight. You should do in and try it. You won't be disappointed. Sure, many of the products may be unfamiliar or even written in a language you might not understand. But the staff is friendly and we're glad to answer my questions. As I am sure they will be glad to answer yours. And, honestly, go in and ask them what they recommend. Try thier favorite foods and favorite desserts. I tried their black currant dressert (black currants are not widely available in the US but are delightful) and I never would have if I didn't ask for a recommendation. At minimum, go in and get 1/4lb of cured meats, some dessert, some bread, and why not some mashed potato dumplings (perogies)... You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Excellent food. The man who oversees the orders is very pleasant. It took a half hour to get the food. When Imopened the package at home I realized that is was only half of what I ordered. I returned. We spoke briefly over the counter. I told the nice man who remembered me, my name and my order. He said 'my fault." I waited in line following 5 patrons to place the order again. I then waited another 50 minutes for the second order. You decide.

Yelp
Great store with a variety of food and meat items. I like going there maybe twice a month. The sales ladies are nice and always helpful with suggestions. You can even ask and order some things you would like to be brought from the bigger russian stores in new york. But mostly they will have it there already. Try it out.:)

Yelp
I love this place!!!! It always has a new product or treat to try. The desserts are amazing .... most of the staff are very friendly ( there is one lady who is kinda stand offish ) . The location is very low key ,I wouldn't have known it was there unless I was looking for it. Overall it's a pretty nice place to shop for something different. I will also add a lot of the stuff there is pre-packaged so it's kind of like a Trader Joes for Eastern Europe. LOL doesn't bother me at all but it might somebody else.

Yelp
I randomly stumped upon European Deli while waiting for food at a restaurant nearby. The reason European Deli caught my attention was the desserts turning on a small case inside. The lady working behind the counter named all of the cakes and pastries for me (small selection). I chose the almond cake and tiramisu. This was my first time eating almond cake. I enjoyed every bite of the cake. The flavor from the filling was delicious. The tiramisu was average. European Deli almond cake definitely made my taste buds happy. The deli has some unique food items and fresh cut meats as well. The staff was polite. European Deli is a good choice for almond cake.

Yelp
I've been going to European Deli for years now and have always been pleased not only by the selection and quality of the produce but also by the friendly staff. No doubt Russian markets in New York would offer more, but this place certainly equals if not exceeds comparable markets in DC. They offer a very nice selection of dairy goods, from kefir and outstanding sour cream to tvorag (a cottage cheese) and a wide selection of other cheeses. They have a very good selection of meats -- salamis, sausages, smoked meats, etc (even head cheese for the more intrepid) -- and an equally good selection of fish. This is the only place in town where I can find real herring. Of course, they have lots of types of pickled items (my fave are the pickled tomatoes) and assorted canned goods. And then there's their homemade bread and piroshki, a good selection of beers and wines, and, of course, the various sweets, from multi-layered Russian cakes like medovik to delightful cookie-like treats such as oreshki to a great assortment of Russian chocolates. And it's always a nice treat when the woman behind the counter tosses a candy or two in with your purchase just as a way to say thanks. (And, no, you don't have to know Russian to go here.)

John D.

Yelp
Good products from East Europe but expensive. Unless you speak and read Russian it is difficult to shop here. Parking is an issue on the weekends. Some staff are not very cordial or helpful. Maybe they prefer to cater to Russian speaking customers. Been there a few times but decided not to go back again.

Yelp
I had a lovely little meal here, with heavy bread, sharp mustard, and tasty meats. The selection of goods on offer is a little odd, and a little charming, but in general, the location and fair pricing is going to be enough to make it worth a stop.

Yelp
I love this place. My favorite items are the pickles and vegetables they bring in from Brooklyn. I also dig the candy! Great source for unusual product.

Yelp
Lots of fantastic Russian & other Slavic treats! So glad to have a place to find things I miss: fresh heavy dark bread (they make it daily & have a selection from NYC), veal sausages, herring, deli choices are great from cheeses to white fish, chocolate of my childhood, pelmeni. Good quality & reasonable prices. Thank you for filling the void created by nostalgia. Recommend.

Sarah S.

Yelp
They have really interesting and tasty meats, cheeses, candy, and an assortment of cool gifts and other foods. It's hard to explain, but I sometimes send new friends and coworkers here, and they end up really loving it. Give it a try yourself. Fair pricing too.

Yelp
Love this place! Being Romanian, I sometimes crave all the different deli items (tobă, cârnati, cascaval) that are typical in Europe but very hard to find here. This place has it all! The garlic head cheese is amazing, all tongue and no fillers. And so fresh! The homemade bread is very good too... and hot. Try the whole wheat one, it's to die for. I always buy some cacaval cheese when I come here, the one they carry is so good. They also have a great selection of canned and jarred (is that even a word? Lol) foods, such as zacuscă (a delicious vegetable dip) and jams. Candy, coffee, basically anything. If it's Eastern European, especially with a Slavic influence, they have it. Great food, great prices. And clean. Most ethnic stores I've been to have been nasty or unkempt, but this one is clean, neat, and inviting. I've never tried their cakes, but they looked delicious. If you're in the mood for some authentic European deli food, or are a European person looking for a little piece of home, THIS IS IT. Check it out! :)
