Women Who Travel Podcast: The Romance and Reality of Sleeper Trains

"I recently did a trip with a company called European Sleeper which is just a, uh, just put together by two big train fans, one from Brussels and one from, uh, Holland. And they just came together and decided that they wanted to bring back sleepers because of the, I suppose it was towards the end of the '90s that most of the Eur- most of Europe sleeper trains were phased out. And they were really sad that there wasn't a sleeper from Amsterdam anymore. And they managed to, I think they crowd-funded quite a lot of it, um, but they also got investors and, by and large, they managed to put together the, the inaugural train that set off from Brussels and it ran overnight from, I think it was 7:30 p.m., got in at 8:30 in the morning to Berlin. And it's gonna carry on to Prague. That's their, their next destination in mind. And it was just the most magic journey. There were tourists who'd come in from all over the world actually, just to, to ride this train."

Over the past four months, I have traveled with European Sleeper six times, primarily between Amsterdam and Prague. I have experienced both the shared 5-person carriage and a private compartment. The crew is consistently kind, approachable, and ready to assist with any questions, which creates a very welcoming atmosphere. The beds are not luxurious, but they are comfortable enough for a good rest, and the overall travel experience is smooth and enjoyable. The scenery—particularly along the stretch between Dresden and Prague—is absolutely breathtaking and makes the journey even more memorable. European Sleeper also offers the option to book breakfast in advance, which is a convenient way to start the day without having to plan ahead. On top of that, it is sometimes possible to find last-minute train deals for as little as €40, making it an even more attractive option. If you are considering taking this train, I would highly recommend it. It is a quick, affordable, and convenient way to travel across Europe, combining practicality with a unique and memorable experience.

We left on time and only arrived about an hour later in Berlin due to German rail infrastructure works, which wasn’t European Sleeper’s fault. Honestly, it was even a nice bonus since I got an extra hour of sleep! The staff are simply the best of any train service in Europe — always helpful, smiling, and genuinely taking care of passengers. When my carriage changed and I couldn’t find my cabin, a staff member personally walked with me until we located it. That kind of dedication really makes a difference. I shared my couchette with four other solo travelers, which turned out to be a great experience. It was inspiring to exchange stories with new people while still having a comfortable night’s rest. I arrived in Berlin refreshed and ready for the day. Yes, the carriages are older, but the service more than makes up for it. And I’m excited to see European Sleeper upgrade their comfort standards in the future — it will only get better.

Amazing Trip: 15-19 October 2025 Den Haag - Praha I was honestly nervous after booking my trip because I saw so many negative reviews and thought, what did I just sign up for?! However, my experience turned out to be great. 1. Punctuality: We departed only 5 minutes late and arrived right on time on the way there and departed on time and arrived 15min late on the way back. Such a small delay on the 14h route is nothing and understandable. 2. Cleanliness: Yes, it’s an older train, but the bathrooms and sink area were clean when I boarded and didn’t smell at all. The compartment wasn’t spotless, but it matched the usual European train standards. I’ve seen similar conditions on NS, DB, etc. 3. Staff: Everyone was kind and professional. There’s no service in second class, but the staff didn’t disturb passengers at night with multiple ticket checks (which often happens elsewhere). 4. Comfort: I’m 175 cm and could sleep comfortably with my legs fully stretched. If you’re over 180cm, it might be a bit tighter. There’s no bedding in second class, but I brought a sleeping bag and it worked perfectly. On the way back I got the comfort thing and they gave: water, pillow, bed sheet and blanket. It was clean and ironed. 5. Price: €30 from Den Haag to Prague is absolute no-brainer. 6. Eco-friendly: It’s better for the environment than flying, and you might even meet some nice people along the way and great views during the day. Overall, I hope this feedback helps! Maybe the experience varies by route or train, but mine was great — and I’d definitely do it again soon 💖

I had a great time on the night train of European Sleeper. The compartments are cosy and well equipped. The staff is very helpful and professional. The train has a solid 6 hours of silent driving without stops during the night offering the change to sleep well. There was an interruption, so we had to take a replacement bus which was very well organised and guided by the stewards. You can even order a coffee in the morning. Absolutely amazing. And all that at an affordable price. I'll definitely take the sleeper again!

I love the sleeper experience, so I'm biased! I very much enjoyed my trip from Brussels to Prague. The carriage was quiet, I had plenty of privacy and slept very well. The compartments are a bit faded and 1980s, but mine was perfectly comfortable, and the bedding fresh and clean. The breakfast is all pre-packaged stuff, but again it was perfectly acceptable. I loved easing into the morning as we scuttled alongside the river through the hills towards Prague. We left and arrived on time. A super trip and one I hope to experience again soon.

The train was filthy. Like dirt and grime and grease everywhere. Additionally, one of the toilets in our carriage was broken, and the sink in our cabin didn't work. The provided breakfast was cheap bread and some jam, and instant coffee. To top it off, the complementary water bottle leaked out the bottom all over the bed. The cost of this privilege: 380€ between two of us. Absolute scam. I emailed support but they were unable or unwilling to assist beyond a generic email. *the compensation offered was a 20% discount on future trips. That is not compensation it is advertising.

Completely satisfied with the travel by Euro Sleeper. The blankets and pillow were clean and not smelling. The coupe was cozy. There is a provision of pre-boxed breakfast but I would have liked if there was a pantry car which gives more options.

I booked a romantic night train from Brussels to Prague on March 21, 2025 A private 5-person sleeper cabin. Just 6 hours before departure, I was informed the train was cancelled. The only “OPTIONS”? A downgrade to a seated overnight bus or cancel within an hour. We had no choice but to take the uncomfortable 12-hour bus. No beds, no privacy. It was just a nightmare. They only offered a 25% refund and blamed me for accepting it. Three months later, I still haven’t received even that. This is a company that can’t afford to deliver what it sells. Book at your own risk.
