Ann Arbor’s Best Vegetarian Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"While the restaurant takes its name from owner Pem Sherpa, it’s also a nod to his former life as a guide on Mount Everest. The menu features food from all over the Himalayan region and several vegetarian options, such as their momo dumplings and hearty Base Camp Thukpa noodle soup. Order online or by phone for pickup or delivery." - John Reyes

What an experience!! This is a pleasant place with helpful staff and delicious food ! I normally don't like leftover noodles as the flavor changes but that wasn't the case with this one. We also tried Momo's and they felt homemade!

I tried the Traditional Curry with lamb and the Basecamp Thukpa, and both were delicious. The waitress explained that the traditional curry is Nepali, distinct from Indian curry. I’m glad I managed to avoid Indian flavors in a Nepali restaurant. The garlic naan was tasty, though not as garlicky as I’d expected. I also had the Sweet Lime and Masala Mint Lemonade—both were great, but I preferred the Sweet Lime. I really liked the art decoration—beautiful Nepali-Tibetan-inspired pieces—that added a special charm to the space. I’ll definitely return to try more dishes.

Everest Sherpa is probably my favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor. Their summer specials have all changed my life for the better. They have a lot of amazing vegetarian & meat-eater options. We LOVE the chili momos, dal makhani, coconut curry, mint masala lemonade, mango lassi, and tandoori chicken. All of the staff is incredibly kind and wonderful!! Love this place so much!!

Came into town and my brother in law and his wife took us out to dinner for some Indian cuisine and the restaurant was cute and small but smelled amazing. Only thing the food took so long and the waitress wasn’t familiar with anything on the menu… Could she have been new?? Not sure but if She was they should have had her shadowing someone so she could be able to communicate the customer’s need because she had to go to the manager for everything we asked for. Moving on to the food it was pretty good! Now if you are a bread lover - the naan bread is ammmazing!!! Oh my god I was hooked! My Rice and curry sauce was good and chicken was tasty. My husband had noodles and he was satisfied. The soup reminded me of smashed peas or Gerber baby food I have my babies - so I passed on that. The space was a little jammed while you ate customers waiting to be seated seemed to hover over you so that felt a little weird as they watched you eat while they looked hungry and anticipating you to get up.

The food was very tasty and had authentic Nepali flavors. I really enjoyed my meal here. Highly recommend this place!

Absolutely wonderful! I got the Masala Mint Lemonade, and it was to die for! My parter and I are both vegans and found more than enough delicious things to eat!

Google
Definitely the best Indian Nepali food I’ve eaten in the area. Seating feels a little cramped but one bite and you forget. Chili chicken momo, thukpa, lime kulfi, and jhol momo were our favorites. Tibetan bread was meh.

Google
One of my top spots in Ann Arbor. The food is amazing. Service and employees are so kind and welcoming. Love the restaurant. Interesting location (shopping center), but the food is worth going for. My go to is the chicken tikka masala with some garlic naan. Delicious! Have gotten the momos several times (prefer the fried option). The lime chicken specialty dish is very tasty. Have also tried the stew and lo mein. Everything is good! I love the Sherpa tea as well. Get yourself a cup!

Yelp
There used to be a Nepalese restaurant in Farmington. I love going there because of the great food and owners that became good friends. Unfortunately, due to issues beyond their control, the restaurant was forced to go out of business. I really missed that place until this day. When I found this restaurant, I was very enthusiastic to try it. When I walked in, I felt very comfortable in the warm atmosphere presented to me. The décor reflected Nepal. We had : Chicken Chow Mein - A tasty noodle dish Garlic Shrimp Appetizer - A shrimp salad with a melody of spices Chili Chicken Momo - Dumpling in a chili sauce Lamb Butayko - A mixture of lamb, vegetables, and spices Corn and Coconut soup - A very good coconut-based soup with a nice texture. Mango Lasi - A yogurt drink blended with mango. Refreshing. All the portions were very generous. I spoke with one of the owners, and she answered all my questions. If you like Indian food, you will enjoy this cuisine. Will I be going back ? Absolutely !

Yelp
Overall: tasty Nepalese/Indian food in Ann Arbor at a reasonable price. I got the chicken momos (dumplings) and chicken makhani (butter chicken) with garlic naan on the side. The momos come in an order of 10, and they let us do half steamed and half fried. They were delicious and tasted like Chinese dumplings with hints of Indian spices reminiscent of aloo gobi. The steamed were more flavorful, but the fried had a great crunchy texture. The chicken makhani had a phenomenal, creamy curry, while the chicken was pretty good but a tiny bit tough. I was overall very happy with the dish. The garlic non-was also well executed, and was great to clean up the last bit of curry from my plate. We came here as a party of four and were seated immediately for a weekend lunch. The interior is spacious and cute, with plenty of tables for groups to sit at. The prices were pretty reasonable at under $20 per dish. The servers were kind and checked in on us frequently.

Yelp
The food was pretty good, and so was the service. They seem to have a steady stream of patrons, which is always a great sign! We had the chicken momos, both steamed and fried, vegetable biryani, Nepali Khaja, chicken makhani, chicken butayko, and garlic naan. Everything tasted really good, nothing to complain about. No dish was a standout. If we are back in Ann Arbor, we'd go again!

Yelp
The food is incredible. The presentation is incredible. The people are great people go here you will not be disappointed !! so let the waitress/owner recommend one of the best selling dishes. It was some of the best food I've ever had.

Yelp
Everything is delicious here! The shrimp makhani is the best I've had - nice and spicy!

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor hands down! We have been multiple times already and have tried different dishes each time, and the food has always been excellent. The flavors are always new, surprising, and very fresh. Service is great and everyone is friendly. I can't wait to go back and try every single item on the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Yummmm! Brought our daughter her for her birthday, she loved it all!!! Everything was on point. Dishes we're full of flavor, this was the first time we tried chow mein at an Indian place and wow! Would definitely recommend- we got ours with shrimp, and it was perfect. Place was pretty spacious, clean and the staff was friendly, food came out pretty quick. I would recommend this place for sure!

Yelp
The food was amazing and flavorful. I had the chicken makhani that was filling and flavorful. I was also pleased the the medium spice actually had a little bit of bite and will be going for the spicy the next time I come. The restaurant itself is clean and brightly decorated and the staff attentive. I definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
The best Indian/Nepalese food you'll find in Ann Arbor and possibly beyond! Got here on a Sunday night craving some curry spices and were pleasantly satisfied. Decor is clean and relaxed. Service was positive and warm. Good enough for a date night but chill enough for sweatpants. We ordered the vegetable pakora, chicken momos, chicken curry with medium spice, and tandoori chicken that comes with a side of dal. Of course, rice is complimentary. The vegetable pakora was fresh, lightly crispy, and delectable. The mint and tamarind chutneys for dipping were absolutely concentrated with flavor and addictive! Next, were the momos and off the bat, they were some pretty hefty boys. The filling was great and tasted very homemade! Prob the best dumplings you'd find in the area. The tandoori chicken was charred and well seasoned, however some of the breast pieces were a bit too dry. Fortunately, the lentil-based dal soup was a great addition to wash it down. The chicken curry was tomato forward and standard, but not in. Bad way. I want to definitely try their other offerings but over, very delicious fare. They are not afraid of seasoning the food properly!

Yelp
Fantastic. Service was speedy and polite; our group of 5 was seated immediately, even though our 5th was running behind. This venue definitely had an Indian vibe, but certainly not overwhelming. The curry scent in the air was intoxicating. I had the lamb tikka masala. Truth: I'm a glutton for punishment, and asked for this dish to be prepared as hot if Ganesha themself prepared it. I bathed in the endorphin rush that embodied me for the next 1/2 hour. 9 1/2 out of 5 stars!

Yelp
I loved everything I ordered at this restaurant. The drinks and food both had a sophisticated flavor palate. Even the chicken makhani had a flavor different from what I get at other Indian restaurants. The spiciness fit in the same way korean spice hits. Excellent food in a spacious restaurant. Service was quick and the chef brought the food right to your table.

Yelp
This is one of the few restaurants that, if I could give them six stars on Yelp, I would! Lately, I have been enjoying the chicken butayko (sweet onion /bell pepper/tomato/ chicken stew) and the biryani dishes. Additional Details: Their biryani comes with raita (slightly sweet yogurt) sauce. Portions are large, especially the biryanis. To my taste buds, the mild biryani or their spice mix features a lot of clove (spice), so you might want to avoid if you are sensitive to cloves. I like the flavor, but just wanted to note that. They also seem to use a tomato masala base in the biryanis, so the biryani has a fuller flavor than just a normal biryani. The interior is nice, and they recently redid their flooring.

Yelp
Every Sherpa Restaurant was one of the first takeout spots my husband and I tried when we moved to Ann Arbor and it quickly became our all-time favorite. Did you have a bad day? Are you feeling under the weather? Do you just want warm and spicy comfort food? We clearly have an emotional dependency on their menu and have yet to try anything we haven't loved. (We had some logistic issues with takeout the first time we ordered, but no problems in the many times since.)

Yelp
I really enjoyed all the food I've had at Everest. I've been several times and the curry and butayko are delicious. Note the hours, they are closed on Mondays and between 2-4:30pm!

Ellen W.

Yelp
Our favorite go to place! We are vegetarians and our family loves Everest Sherpa as well - they usually only eat meat! Great service and excellent atmosphere - I love the feeling of being up in the mountains with the photographs. Mango Lasse and chai tea are also delicious!! Enjoy :)

Yelp
Love the atmosphere here, very colorful restaurant with nice dinnerware and very attractive decor. I enjoyed the food immensely, very tasty! The service was quick and friendly, I had a great lunch with friends here!

Yelp
Updating review since it's been a minute! Everest Sherpa continues to be a fave and consistently impress in terms of quality, flavor, and service. They were really great during the 2020-2021 phases of COVID with options for curbside pick up, easy ordering, and safety precautions. I recently tried their Chicken Butayko (spice level hot) and it was soooo delicious! It was also a generous portion and made for a delicious lunch the day after. A forever fave!

Yelp
The food and staff are amazing! Love their Tikka Masala, MoMo's and Naan Bread. Visit often!!!

Alysse W.

Yelp
This chicken polayko was so yummy! It also came with dal soup. I'd never tried either before, but wanted to try something new. No regrets! They also gave a lot of chicken, so I'll even have leftovers.

Yelp
My family and I tried Everest Sherpa Restaurant for the first time today. Having never tried Himalayan food, we were excited to give it a go. The restaurant has a nice interior, with neat pictures of Mt Everest and surrounding villages, as well as some pretty artwork. There are two rooms with tables but it's not a huge place. It's just right. The staff is friendly and welcoming and sat us right away. The menu is clearly marked with specials and allergens (GF/DF) which is important to me as a person who has multiple food allergies. Our food was brought out fairly quickly, and the portions weren't overly huge nor too small for the price. People in our group tried the naan bread, samosas, momos, chicken chow mein and chicken curry. All the food was delicious and beautiful in presentation. The restaurant is spotless, as are the restrooms. We will be back and look forward to trying more tasty items from this menu!

Yelp
Overcooked and under seasoned. I decided to eat here instead of cardamom after hearing good reviews and because it is significantly closer to me. Unfortunately, I was completely disappointed in my experience here. The chicken in the Makhani and Butayko dishes was dry and over cooked. The food was extremely bland. The naan was burnt on the bottom. Overall, the entire meal was inedible. If you're craving Indian food I will 100% recommend Cardamom over this place. I will not be making any return visits here.

David L.

Yelp
My favorite Indian style food in ann arbor. Very nice little spot with great food and very well maintained and clean.
google avatar

Yelp
Big mix up with our reservation so it was a rough start but food was delicious and service was great. We made reservations months in advance and after confirming it twice they still claim we didn't confirm their email to request to confirm the third time. Not sure how many times one needs to confirm to really be confirm. Anyhow, whats more important is the food was delicious as all have rated so its consistent. Service did not disappoint so after a rough start it came back strong and delivered.

Yelp
This place is so good I went here for dinner twice this week!! The food is AH-MAZING!! The Butayko with lamb and medium spice was the perfect amount of deliciousness for me. I ordered it both times I was there. I'm pretty sure the samosas I had there were the best I've ever had. The tamarind chutney is outstanding. I wish I'd ordered them both times as well. I will be getting the samosas again! Also worth having again were the Tibetan naan, the onion naan, the mango lassi, and the chicken tikka masala. I didn't particularly care for the steamed veg momos, but plenty of other Yelpers have enjoyed them, so don't be concerned about my experience with them if they are something you think you might like. The restaurant's unassuming location in the Target strip mall should not scare you away. I was super thankful that we arrived for dinner just before 6 on a Friday night because the place was packed shortly after with people standing around waiting on tables to be freed of the patrons. Both times, the staff was attentive to my water glass and with bringing us extra items as requested I was pleased with the service both times. Note that Everest Sherpa has mastered the takeout business...when we walked in yesterday, the entire bar was covered with takeout orders, and they never stopped coming both times I was there to eat. I'm quite certain you won't be disappointed with the food you get here regardless of where you consume it. Enjoy!

Yelp
The food was spectacular and the people even better. What kind, caring, attentive staff this venue has. I will go back because of the delicious food and terrific wait staff!

Eleanor B.

Yelp
I love the Chow mein, Nepalese and the curry dishes, flavorful and lighter on the spices than Indian food. I miss the Buffet and Thali for lunch. Love the ambiance and service is courteous.

Yelp
Everest Sherpa really blew me away. A coworker recommended that I give it a try, and now that they're open for dine-in again, I finally took the advice last week. Though it may not look like much from the outside, it was beautifully vibrant on the inside, clean and colorfully decorated. It was my first time trying Nepalese food, so I frankly don't have much to compare it to, but the menu was a cool fusion of Chinese and Indian food, two of my favorite cuisines. We ordered the traditional chicken curry, lamb butayko, and vegetable Sherpa stew with naan bread. All three dishes were delightful, but what stood out most was the fluffy naan. It was much softer than Indian naan, perfect for soaking up the flavorful curries we ordered. My sister, who rarely eats lamb, was a huge fan of the tomatoey curry with tender lamb chunks. My only caution is that the mango lassi is extremely yogurt-y, so lactose sensitive diners beware! If you like Indian and Chinese cuisines or have never eaten Nepalese food before, definitely come to Everest Sherpa! You won't regret it.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I got the garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, and kheer as a carry out. Everything was good. The decor is nice inside and the staff was friendly.

Marilyn T.

Yelp
Authentic fantastic food and drinks. You won't be disappointed. Not open on Mondays I believe.
google avatar

Ailun H.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for dinner and we decided to not be adventurous with our food and got something we're familiar with - the chicken tikka masala along with the garlic naan. The garlic naan was quite tasty but the chicken tikka masala was pretty average. The portion of chicken provided wasn't bad! Overall, I'd recommend this place because it has more unique Asian cuisine such as Nepali and Tibetan! Definitely will come back in the future to try other dishes.

Kirk B.

Yelp
Great food. Medium spicy is spicy, but not too bad. I had the Sherpa Stew with Lamb. Not much lamb, but very hearty and good. Great service and nice atmosphere for a strip mall.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by this restaurant's exterior, being between some shops in a strip mall. This place serves incredible Indian food. The interior is cozy and makes a great place for dining in or getting food to go. My typical meal includes Chicken Makhani with garlic naan and samosas. This is a "must-try" for everyone in the area.

Cody F.

Yelp
I love getting take out from here. Everything is great. I just wish the serving sizes were a little bigger for the price they charge.

Krishna R.

Yelp
Outstanding food, and really great service. We walked in pretty late about 15 minutes before they were going to close, and they offered us hot, amazing food and waited until we left and then closed up. Great place to go in the Ann Arbor area.

Susan B.

Yelp
Today I ate the Dal soup and Chicken Makhani. Delicious!!! In fact it was so good I am somewhat reluctant to add my review because I almost want to keep this hidden gem restaurant (nestled in a floundering strip mall) a secret so I can always get a table...but that wouldn't be fair to you! If you like Indian food and don't think the downtown AA restaurants do it well, I urge you to try this place. You won't be disappointed. If you're looking for alcohol though you may have to go downtown.
google avatar

Minna A.

Yelp
Big yum yum in my tum tum. Matter paneer is the big tasty. Chai extra yummy cause free from.l check-in. Biryani dry. Naan is a naan-negotiable. Paneer butayko was meh.
google avatar

CK J.

Yelp
I love ordering food here, everything is always so amazing. My usuals are their biryani, noodle dishes, Tibetan bread and makhani. Just leaving this review makes me hungry.
google avatar

Tasnia M.

Yelp
Husband and I moved to AA not that long ago and we got takeout from here one of our first nights. It was pretty good. But honestly not memorable enough for a return yet.
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
Great food, good service, beautiful place. My only complaint: the music they played when we were there was kind of annoying.
google avatar

Radhika R.

Yelp
Their dining room is open now, much to my elation! Although the buffet remains closed, I know it is for our safety. I ordered my beloved mattar paneer, several naans and lamb biriyani. Excellent! The accompanying raita has a slight sweetness which balances the spice well.
google avatar

Louise E.

Yelp
Both the lamb biryari and chicken curry were good. The lamb biryani was in medium spice level and for someone who has high tolerance to spicy food, medium is really good. The chicken curry was sweet because of the tomatoes. The service was good, servers were nice and the place was clean.
google avatar

Waheeda R.

Yelp
First time coming here and it was absolutely amazing. Friendly environment and the food was amazing! I felt very immersed in the culture that was being presented and had a great talk with the lead chef. We ordered the butter chicken, aloo cauli, and steamed momos and they were delectable. 10/10 would come again, a very great experience.
google avatar

Jordan G.

Yelp
Amazing food! I would recommend this spot to anyone who enjoys Indian food. Especially the Naan bread!
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
Walked in and walked out since they're only doing take away. Just didn't feel like eating in the car today. Was sort of coarse about it too which affirmed to me I must have made a good choice. Maybe next time, maybe not. First impression wasn't a good look.

Joseph S.

Yelp
Delicious food, lots of enjoyable menu items, always hot out of the kitchen, pleasant and comfortable setting.
google avatar

Benjamin K.

Yelp
Wonderful cozy restaurant with outstanding food. The menu had plenty of variety and photos of most if not all dishes which made ordering a breeze. The wait staff was friendly and very quick with service.
google avatar

Tiuska S.

Yelp
This place is amazing. A secret jewel. I was not expecting this to be so great. The low ranking rating below mine is a total lie you guys. Probably a neighboring, jealous business. Totally recommend the tikka masala lamb and the garlic bread and there's another sweet bread too.
google avatar

Annaliese D.

Yelp
In town for one night and stumbled upon this place. I'm incredibly sad I won't be able to get it on the regular. We had the veggie tikka masala, lamb biryan, and vegetable pakora. Tikka 10/10 I got medium spice level and it was pleasantly warm not too spicy at all. I probably could've handled high spicy. But this was perfect Biryan 8/10 it was really good. We've never had it before so we don't have anything to compare it too. But it was tasty. Vegetable Pakora 12/10 the dipping sauces fantastic! And for fried food it held super well as to go. We also got 2 sides of naan (garlic and regular) this was very good too, just we had so much food it was kind of over kill with all the rice we had. Our food was also ready before the 15 minute pick up time, and the square check out was super easy on line. Seriously so sad we can't become regulars here.

debbie f.

Yelp
Wonderful owners, delicious food, great service! My husband and I love it there. Highly Recommend their chai tea, too, it is so good.
google avatar

Yelp
I really enjoyed my experience here. I will be back to enjoy more food soon. A hidden gem
