Everett & Jones Barbeque

Yesterday 10/19/2025. I spent over $140 for four link dinners — total waste. The beef links were burnt, dry, and hard, and the mac & cheese was clumpy, dry, and burnt. Absolutely disgusting. They should be ashamed to serve food like this. It’s clear they don’t care about quality or their customers. Everett & Jones has completely lost its way and is tarnishing it's legacy. Ruined my family members birthday dinner. We had to buy food from Smokin Woods to make up for this disrespectful mess. Never again will I ever, ever spend money with Everett & Jones.

Tried Everett & Jones BBQ in Berkeley for lunch and really enjoyed the smoky barbecue flavors. I ordered the lunch combo with pork ribs, potato salad, and mac and cheese. The pork ribs were juicy, moist, and perfectly cooked, and the BBQ sauce was rich and flavorful. The potato salad was a nice side, though the mac and cheese was a bit on the dry side. Overall, great spot for some authentic barbecue—would definitely come back for the ribs!

I remembered when they moved to that spot YEARS ago. Of course over the years things change. My husband ordered takeout, two of the three meat combos. We enjoyed the meat, potato salad (with less skin) and green beans. But the Mac & Cheese…..NOO Not the Mac & Cheese we’re used to.

I loved my experience here at their Berkeley location. Nice cashier (counter person). The food is nationally acclaimed. I've been to other states and I personally haven't found many places that can give you an experience of great food.

Small place , outside seating limited , awesome very tasty Barbecue meat and plate lunches. definitely will be going back here. They’ve been in business 50 years or longer and they have some really cool stickers all over the inside of their business. good ones ! you’ll see some of them on the pictures. Best overall sticker collection I’ve ever seen. Love this place.

This place has been excellent the last thirty years. I love going to this place.Just the smoke smell out front smells amazing. This place definitely has something for your barbecue fix! Even their hot barbecue sauce, which is indeed hot, is very good. My favorite is the three-way combo. Love the brisket, love the ribs, love the links. This place has always been excellent from an early lunch too a very late dinner. They aim to please. Very large portions for the price! You can also buy the sauce in jars in the stores.

I used to love getting takeout from here in the summer when I had friends over. Had it for the first time in years a few nights ago and I am sad to report the food has gotten worse. I got the fourway, which was one portion of every meat item. The ribs were still good, although less tender and smoky than before. The brisket was better than I remember. Sausage had a mealy texture, clearly undermixed (not enough myosin development). Chicken, despite being my least favorite in the past, has somehow managed to get worse. Overcooked and stringy. The whole thing was drenched in sauce to cover up the poor barbecue. Mac and cheese was dry, potato salad tasted like the supermarket brand. If you're craving barbecue there are better options. Really wouldn't remember unless you're just getting the ribs and brisket.

I have been coming here for about 10 years off and on. Last time I brought my cousin that has never been here. We ordered our food, I got the chicken and rib meal, my cousin ordered the same. I asked for dark meat with BBQ sauce on top, he asked for it on the side. I also ordered a margarita. About 10 minutes later, I got tired of waiting for my drink. I look at the bar, I see people walking up, and the waitress making drinks, and handing them out to customers. I clearly ordered my drinks before these other customers. I walk up to the bar, i wait patiently about another 5 minutes as I see customers walking up and ordering drinks and having them made. I eventually had to cut in and say to the bartender, "I ordered a margarita a while ago." She said, "it's coming right up." then she started to make it. Drinks should be served on a first come first serve basis. As for the food, I used to consider the ribs here the best. But once I got served my food. My order was messed up, they gave me white meat with BBQ sauce on top. I asked for dark. My cousin had dark meat with BBQ on the side. They messed up the orders. The one with no BBQ sauce on top should have been mine with BBQ sauce on top. and my plate shouldn't have had BBQ sauce and should have been my cousin's. I started to eat it, and the ribs were dry, like overcooked. I used to have much better ribs here. I had to apologize to my cousin, because we talked him up and hyped this place up.

Ribs were not up to par. Were tough and dry. Not enough sauce for dipping. Lady behind the counter had a little attitude.

I have been going to E&J's since the early 1980s when they stayed open until three and you could get a three-way combo for (I believe) $7.50. Many a drunken-stoned night ended with a plate of beef, ribs, and links on a paper plate with the sauce and potato salad and the white bread all kind of melding together. Damn it hit the spot! They already had started their collection of bumper stickers and the attitude of the very large people serving was notoriously variable which represented its own challenge. We also had a game that consisted of seeing if you could avoid flinching while one such large person chopped the ribs with great resounding blows of the cleaver. The clientele was a mix of local folks of every age and of course the stoner-munchy crow of which we were a part. It was either here or Flints up on Shattuck and Alcatraz (we generally prefered E&J's, though this was an ongoing debate--particularly since Flint's tended to be more generous with they portions). Flints on Shattuck shut down in the late eighties or or early nineties, largely because (I believe) the neighbors (understandably) couldn't deal with smoke and grease a BBQ joint inevitably produces (if it's any good) in endless quantities. Anyway, this review is necessarily marked by that nostalgia and the fact that I think E&J's links are still among the best I've ever had. The rest--brisket, ribs etc is so-so, though the sauce definitely does everything a favor (Texas BBQ fans, I know, I know). Anyway, like I said, this gets four stars for just still being there and for turning out the same food they turned out over forty years ago when I was in college. Now I will say one thing, and I suspect that this is largely simply due to the fact that this place is holding down a space in one of the most expensive real-estate markets in the country: the fact that a two-way combo has now gone up to forty bucks (I believe it was $25 before Covid) means that it's no longer stoner-street food but a decided luxury that is kind of hard to justify given the quality, quantity (definitely not what it used to be) and the location--University and San Pablo isn't exactly downtown Berkeley. Anyway, I had mixed feelings about all of this when I went back and forked out that much money...but sitting in my car and scarfing it down, it brought back some powerful memories that earn it an extra star. An admitted moment of bias and critical weakness.

This location used to be The Best Out of All of them. NO LONGER TRUE!!! Ordered a brisket lunch $22.04 total including $2 tip. Quantity: 0/5 1 small scoop of potato salad , 2 slices of damp wheat bread and a few paper thin slices of brisket !!!! this couldn't even satisfy my 7 year old nephew Quality : 2/5 Potato salad was all mayo ... nasty Bread was damp ??? Brisket was dry ah like either it's a day old or over cooked. . Tough to chew horrible!!!!! Only thing good is the sauce Service was good. Nice folks

Been coming to this place since high school, over 15 years ago and I am really disappointed. What really disappointed me was the cashier taking our order; his hands & nails looked like he'd been working on cars for a week straight, that's gross. In a restaurant atmosphere, cleanliness is extremely important, ESPECIALLY when you're handling folks food. $72 for 2 combo plates is insane for bland food that needs the sauce to be good. Third issue of course in detail is without the sauce, the meat is terrible. Chicken has absolutely no flavor, no seasoning, the Mac n cheese has no flavor of cheese, at all. Green beans were flavorful but weren't cooked all the way through, beans were alright and the links and ribs were the best part due to them being drenched in the delicious hot bbq sauce. The sauce is probably the best part of this restaurant so I probably won't be returning. Kind of a waste of money. I hope they do better.

35.28 for a 2 way of brisket and links. Good quality. I was a long time customer of KC BBQ. The macaroni and cheese was fine. Not many bbq options I'm familiar with near Berkeley. I will return.

Visiting from San Francisco went with the family on Sunday afternoon wasn't very busy, food came out very fast. Unfortunately it wasn't cooked though enough for my liking. Ribs were very fatty and chewy and chicken was tough. Ultimately food was very bland and way too much sauce on the meat, but you could tell the sauce was all over the meat because it wasn't seasoned properly. Baked beans were bland. They had no barbecue flavored to them at all. They taste like cooked pinto beans. Macaroni and cheese cheese on it. We will not be coming back.

Very expensive, they run out of menu items early in the day, but the portions are big and the barbecued meats are great.

Pains me to have to leave this review. Ive been coming here for years & will not return. The beef brisket was tough & strange-tasting and swimming in watery, unappetizing BBQ sauce. The male workers at E&J on San Pablo have always been weirdly hostile, but the food was worth the attitide (and price). Sadly not anymore. I still recommend E&J BBQ sauce in a jar bought at the grocer-- its out of this world-- but the days of melt in your mouth briskett seem to be over.

Gail is my new favorite person. Exceptional customer service. My wife and wanted for nothing. Great find Everett and Jones. The food was great. The atmosphere with the music and view is great. Will be back again

Always overcooked meats! No matter what you order, ribs, links and brisket. Maybe because it was late in the day but you shouldn't sell that product at any time.

Save your money, this isn't worth it. plain and simple for the money spent you get inedible food. I try once a year and the prices go up and the portions keep shrinking. I got a triple play with a 10% tip $43 Pork ribs, severely undercooked, links ok, brisket "4 thin slices of flavorless beef" no smoke flavor. large scoop of potato salad and green beans. Prices have skyrocketed but alas the food is barley edible. This place needs to do us the service and close, for good.

Best brisket and link 2 way in the bay. This is my go to spot for bbq. This location specifically is great. The people are very nice and have been there a while. I love walking in and seeing all the photos through the years that represent all the happy people that have come here.

I know inflación is real but the amount of food for 17 to 18 dollar's is interesting. In side is ok , old school has a juke box that plays different random R &B. Service was ok Lady (older lady)at the counter was interesting not freindy. What was ordered: One chicken lunch ( used to be chicken sandwich) Daughter wanted no side. A leg and thigh and stale breat cut in half _$17 plus a 20cents bag fee. One link lunch _ potato salad stale bread and links Beef brisket lunch _ not the freshest meat was cut in deli like meat slices covered in sauce. Still had potatoe salad $18 plus a 20 cents bag fee Changed twice for a bag even though every thing came in the same bag. Make sure you get your recipt. Service 2 Food 2 Parking _ hood .5 Selection of drinks _friends Potatoe salad has large pieces of skin in it and if you don't like pickles it's not for you. Over all this was an interesting visit..

Had a brisket and rib combo with " barbecue beans" and potato salad.Meat was tough and overly sauced ( big no-no for serious barbecue) but the taste was nice. Beans were standard baked beans as suppose to a more chili like preparation as the name implies. The potato was widely sour, and the cornbread was bland. Price was also very high, even with the large portions. Only giving two stars because the meat and sauce were good (aside from the texture) but would not recommend if your looking for impressive barbecue.

I had to update my review for the third time!!!! This place is amazing!!! The food is great and the employees are always very nice!!! This evening I dropped by right before closing and as usual I was greeted very nicely While placing my order another customer walked in (yes their practice g social distancing, only 3 ppl in at one time and really seems like 2ppl which is even better) and she was approaching the register where I was the employee stopped her before she was close and reminded the lady of social distancing (on point!!) and continued with the matter very politely again this place is amazing the food is really good and the employees are top

I give it a 1 because the service was good but the food was not up to par. Watery/sour potato salad, greens beans was like canned green beans with a piece of potato, Mac n cheese was like toasted box. Mac n cheese/!: my links taste like bbq sauce. I wasn't expecting this for Everett n jones because of the hype but I won't be going back

The chicken lunch is supposed to be a quarter of a chicken. It's mostly bone. I had 2 nugget sized portions of meat. And that was it, for 17$. THE BACK DOESN'T COUNT!

Love this place. Don't come here to be coddled or for the ambiance. Come here to get the east bay's original bbq legend. As good today as it was when I had it for the first time over 25 years ago. Go to the San Pablo Berkeley location. The smoke pit is seasoned and everything tastes the way it's supposed to.

I have been eating here since I was a kid, I am sad that the prices have increased and the quality has decreased. Nothing tastes the same, the quality of the meat is poor and the potato salad is a sour with a paste texture. Sad to say, I will never order from here again.

Came by yesterday go to ribs and links sauce on the side the young lady at the counter was very nice kamara was her name some people left bad reviews but on this day well it was a good day the potatoes salad was very creamy so I guess they make it for people who like it thay way i don't prefer it but the bar b que was on hit thanks.

Food was alright was expecting more from this place service was very slow and ambiance is not present they need to work on seating area its not clean and table are always dirty

Quick, affordable, filling. Was craving "meat" and decided to grab some BBQ from Everett Jones. Located on the corner of San Pablo and University Ave, there is plenty of street parking, as well as a parking lot for convenient pick up. Walked straight up to the order counter at 4:30pm on a Tuesday. Ordered the 4 way (aka. all the meats) with a side of Mac and cheese and baked beans. Was not sure how spicy the sauce would be, so ordered medium heat to be safe! I barely waited 5 minutes before my order was ready to go! The servings were Very generous, and even though there were two very hungry people attacking the meat, will still have plenty of leftover of everything! Recommend if you're craving some comfort food. Also, the medium sauce was not spicy (says someone with a low tolerance for heat) and I would probably go hot next time round.

I'm not exactly sure what I just ate, It was reminiscent of a plate filled with condiments "BBQ sauce" the links where more of a sausage texture, I was expecting "Showboat/Evergood" not nearly enough meat in it to get a real good flavor, it crumbles and the casings is extremely thick and chewy. It wasn't grinned enough so I bit into hard pieces, best way to describe.. like if you were eating a chicken nugget.. It was practically $20 for a small lunch plate with 1side and 2slices of bread.. It has potential because I haven't tried their other items but this plate should've been free!!

They're always so nice! The barbecue ribs are juicy, fall off the bone! Don't tell anybody, but I even eat the cartilage!

One of those places that makes a trip to Berkeley bearable. Food is always excellent (Brisket and Links for me!), as well as excellent sides and cobbler. Bonus for not having any vegan alternatives. Keeps the riff-raff away. Then only complaint I've had over the course of a few dozen visits is the mindless locals milling about inside the place. Read the menu BEFORE you walk in the f'n door, get your stuff and get out. Don't hang out and get under foot, and don't get pissy when I photobomb your social media pictures when you're being an ass.

We chased down this E&J restaurant since we discovered the BBQ sauce at a local food store. The Berkeley location is a funky little place which makes it a cool BBQ joint. You order inside and wait outside for your order at which time you can take it home or sit at one of the outdoor tables. We sat at a table and it was shaded and nice. Here is the breakdown: Ribs: 5 stars - smoked low and slow - excellent! Potato Salad: 5 stars - flavorful and creamy, small (not big) chunks of potato and super fresh. BBQ Sauce - Hot 5 stars - this batch was noticeably hotter than the store bought hot version but I could take the pain. BBQ Sauce - Mild 5 stars - overall delicious Links: 4 stars - a bit overcooked but a great flavorful link Mac & Cheese: 4 stars - creamy and cheesy Service (speed): 4 stars - there was no line at the time and the order came out in just a few minutes. Bread: 3 stars - bread is bread Brisket: 1 star - cut thin like roast beef and tough as a shoe sole. Order accuracy: 1 star - ordered beans got potato salad, ordered the brisket sandwich, got the brisket dinner. With a few tweaks this place has the bones to go five stars all day long. It starts with that BBQ sauce which is money!

This meat was overcooked and attempted to cover it with bbq sauce. Potatoe salad was horrible, and the yams were uncooked. Being from Texas, I thought it would be better. Stay away from this place. Hopefully, they will improve after reading.

Torn for this review . I guess I give a place less than 3 stars if I can walk away and never crave or need to visit the business Again 1. Since FLINTS BBQ closed - Everett's is most Definitely the better BBQ in Berkeley/ oakland . I love their sauce and beef links and that's def the winner. The ugh 1. Brisket has gotten fattier and fattier. 1/2 your order is fat and has to be tossed making you feel like you're not getting that much 2. This location is usually out of SOMETHING such as a side or cornbread 3. The surrounding area and parking lot is low key suspect with some weird people 4. There is NO customer service here. 5. They take your change/money. We were supposed to get $0.47 back and they just chose not to- like I don't care if it's $0.01 - that's MY money and I'll choose whether I take it or want to tip 7. I hate places that I have to check and recheck my order to make sure they didn't miss something I paid for poor extra sauce 8. They're stingy with the BBQ sauce At the end of the day - this location can be so frustrating that you end up trying a sub par BBQ restaurant or travel to oakland fora different location ... and that's sad.

Happy news here. Nosh had raised the possibility that Everett & Jones might be closing down alongside its neighbor, the 99¢ Store, which is being torn down to make room for housing. I called yesterday to see if they would be open for pickup today and was told they would be. They don't take phone orders, so I stopped by around noon and placed an order for two meals, a two-way for me w/ ribs and brisket and brisket for Alan. My sides were their green beans and potato salad and Alan's were BBQ beans and mac and cheese, as they didn't have the coleslaw he wanted. I asked for mild sauce but forgot to ask for it on the side, so it wasn't. I asked the sweet young man behind the counter if their building was going to be torn down. He said lots of people had been asking that, but it wasn't. The construction would work around them. I went outside to wait for my number to be called. After a relatively short wait he brought it out to me rather than calling my number and having me walk in. I drove over to The Point, the glorious scent of BBQ enveloping my hungry self. When we unpacked it, it tasted just as good as it smelled! I had some of the ribs, some of the potato salad, some of the green beans and some of Alan's mac and cheese. They were all good, although the beans seemed a little saltier than they've been the past few times I've had them. When I have them next I will see if that's really the case. Needless to say, I have plenty of leftovers and will make brisket sandwiches for lunches a couple of days. I am relieved and happy that Everett & Jones isn't going anywhere any time soon. It's become my go-to place to scratch that BBQ itch.

There's levels to this ish. And the Berkeley E&J is by far the best and brightest shining star of this lovely lil' local- and Black-owned BBQ chain. (Does 4 spots qualify as a "chain"? Because when I hear that word, Walmart and Target come to mind--and that definitely isn't what Everett's is all about!) The Berkeley location, often bustling and forever bursting at the seams with cheeky bumper stickers plastered to every surface of the teeny establishment, is the most reliable and consistent Everett's there is. The staff are so incredibly lovely and kind and cool (Imma forgive the gentleman I walked in on rewatching the damn Playoffs game where the Warriors lost... #wheretheydodatat?) Slash sometimes when I smell the link plate I contemplate temporarily rebuking my vegetarianism and just going in on some. And don't you dare even start to suggest I'm not qualified to talk about their consistency since I haven't had their link plate in a while; my tribe knows good food and they tell me the meat is still on hit. Me? I'm slammin' slides, periodt. E&J locations sell either greens or green beans with potatoes and this joint sells green beans. Perfectly cooked green beans, might I add. So if you want the best E&J spot there is, head to Berkeley. All my boos there got you.

The best bbq in the Bay Area. I have followed this family business since 1980. And they have kept the food they serve the same.

E&J used to be one of my favorites. I work in Berkeley, so I mostly freqented this location. My last order was not so great. The ribs were tough AF and the links were so old and dry. What the hell is in this potato salad? It doesn't seem to have any potatoes! Lots of mayo though, it should have been called mashed mayo salad. I waited a while before I returned. This location used to be on point, but after my last visit, I'm never setting foot in this place again. I didn't even get to order this time because I was so disgusted by the way the employees were treating the customers ahead of me. No one was going to speak to me in this manner, so I left. They were actually upset because someone asked a question about an item on the menu. And they weren't afraid to show how irritated they were when customers simple inquired about their menu, portions or the price. It was as if all the employees were having a bad day. Is that possible? It was that night. No thanks E&J I'm not that desperate for BBQ, not yours anyway. Heard they are not going to be there much longer because of a housing project being built. This is one x-customer that won't miss you.

Quality has changed since years before. The sauce taste different then before and the meat wasn't the same. I will not be going back for awhile. Sometimes, the change of personal Has something to do with it.

It was the fastest I had ever gotten my bbq brisket ever. And it was solidly good. I got green beans and potato salad on the side. This particular store doesn't offer the variety of sides as the MacArthur one, but they're consistent in their quality and having good brisket.

First of all, Since I've been eating this bbq for so long, I'm finding it very difficult leaving a negative review. But...after the experience I had today I cannot let this go. Not only do I live 40 miles away and had been craving the bbq all day, but to finally get it and be 100% dissatisfied is distasteful. My family and I had the links with medium sauce (the sauce was not medium and it was very runny- not mention the runny sauce had spilled out and was at the bottom of the bag) the Mac n cheese was as dry as the Mohave desert, the green beans was salty and nasty, the ribs was tough and salty, the bbq beans was just plain nasty and the chicken was dry and flavorless. $60+ down the drain on a very horrible food experience after traveling 40 miles to get. And not to mention the prices went up because the prices on the website is clearly not the same at the restaurant... Just a complete disappointment (I added one picture below- the other food was thrown away before I could take a picture of it)

I have been curious about this place since they have been around for so long and is nearby Serving size was generous We tried a Brisket sandwich that came with a side of potato salad for my son and a 4 way for me with side of Mac and green beans Mac was very good, especially dipped in the sauce that was generously poured over the meats Potato salad was also very good and balanced the heat of the sauce Ribs were very tender and the brisquet was also tasty and tender It was so big that I only ate half for Khufu my daughter was very grateful:) She particularly enjoyed the links Great meal overall and decent price Will definitely come back!

Best BBQ ribs I've had in a long time. The portions were large plus we ordered spicy, and it was actually spicy & so delicious! My only complaint is they ran out of mac & cheese and cornbread on July 4. I know it was a busy day, however, on holidays, you should be prepared for larger crowds, since I only came for the mac & cheese and ribs, It was a disappointment, but the food made up for it.

Mediocre. Wouldn't go back. Food just didn't have love. It food was over cooked. Macaroni and cheese was watery.

Melt in your mouth ribs! No lines, great service. They only have carry out or dine in, no call In orders. Must have got lucky because at 6 o'clock on a Wednesday night, I got in and out and home with more ribs than I could eat. The dog was salivating! LOL!

First time visiting and I had to give it a try since I could smell it from around the corner. I will start off by saying it is a bit pricey but it was definitely worth it. The Mac and cheese was a little bland. The beans were compliment the plate really well. The real winner was all the meats. The links were extremely tasteful, the brisket melted in your mouth, and the ribs pulled right off the bone. All their meats are topped with some of the tastiest barbecue sauce I've had. Anytime I'm in the area I will be visiting this place again!

Stingy! I went here about 6n months ago... the brisket was great, and the portions were reasonable... Today got two Brisket "Dinners" and one large side, for a cost of almost 60 bucks... and there was very little Brisket. Seriously... I know food costs are high but seriously? How can people afford food at these prices? Portions should be generous! I can't feed us for lunch... much less dinner.

1st of all...no hospitality at all!..no smiles.. it almost seems like we are bothering them. 2nd.. all of their eyes were glued to the TV watching Rush-Hour lol! I always remember that I don't give a fuck attitude all these years but still? At this day age with all the other shit out there to eat..smh! Just water.. no sodas...that's just poopy! I remember going there before & having like root beer and Coke and shit like that. anyways, I wonder if the sales have gone down because it wasn't too many people in there we have to wait in line before. Standby for the reviews on the Everett Jones at the Grayton casino definitely subpar. And what's the deal with cash only no card? SMH.

I don't know what has happened as of late but the food here has improved tremendously. I absolutely love barbecue and Everett and Jones in Jack London Square used to be a hit or miss. I've ordered several times in the past couple of months and I have been pleasantly impressed. The sides are on point as well. Keep up the good work.

Great barbecue smoked brisket! Wasn't expecting to find this place but I could smell it down the street and was pleasantly surprised to find it, and enjoyed the barbecue picnic style meal. The good old style potato salad was a bonus I didn't know I was getting. Too much food for just myself! Thank you!

I'm a Texas Refugee this weekend who definitely understands Great and Tasty BBQ NATIONWIDE!! Everett and Jones is a Classic Bay Area destination for great BBQ. Grow a pair people, this is the set-up for the true Q. If the neighbors intimidate you maybe you should buy them a snack. The North Face is down the road, Halmar Work Clothes is in the parking lot and it's why I found this part of Berkeley. 3 stars is just Wrong, it's a great sauce, they work hard, the smoke flavor is dead on. This sides are delicious, and the portions are big. And then there's the Peach Cobbler that only needs a scoop of Blue Belle Vanilla deep from the heart of Texas. Great place, order your food whatever way makes you safe, and Enjoy!!!
