Finding good BBQ is challenging. It was my first time here. Unfortunately, due to the poor service, I was unable to try it.
My Wife and I went here for a rare night out. The exterior and overall interior is authentic and the brand is iconic! When I went to the restroom, the back private area door opened and it was lit! Seemed like everyone, mostly locals, were having a great time.
When we entered there was no obvious host and we were not greeted. So we went to the cashier to order. In fact at no time did any employee say "Welcome" or "Thank You". With no host seemingly around, we were unknowingly in the "Take Out" line.
She took our order - 3 items we wanted were not available including Sparkling water so I bought there plain bottled water and asked for a glass. She looked at me, handed me the receipt - again with no "Hello" or anything, and my Wife and I sat down at the side bench waiting to be seated. We were incredibly thirsty after walking on the pier.
We waited for 15 minutes and I mentioned to the cashier we're eating in. She said "OK" and we continued to wait. While we're sitting there a Female employee, came in hot to sit down apologizing after she flopped down coming into contact with my Wife, almost knocking her off the bench. So...we moved to the other side of side dining area at a table next to the window.
We waited another 10 minutes and an aloof waiter with an incredible afro came strolling through. We asked about the water and he reluctantly conceded never once even asking if were eating in. I asked about the beer I ordered and he directed me to the bar.
So I went to the bar, delighted to see all my fellow Americans of African descent in the historic City of Oakland! As I arrive at the bar, a group of customers along with the bar tender are laughing loudly...about "Light skinned energy." I happen to be "light skinned", for the uninitiated it's African American vernacular for fellow ethics not displaying an arbitrarily assigned acceptable amount of Melanin. The "energy" part is a chauvinistic slur, generally targeting AA Males the goal being to insult their manhood, and imply they are sensitive or feminine.
What was hilarious was the look on the "dark skinned" Brother with the dread locks face, when he looked up and saw me, his eyes turned into saucers...HA! But none of the others saw me. I don't believe they would care...LOL Being from the South, the DIRECT descendant of former slaves (we never ran off and left), it's disappointing to experience passive racism from my own kind. I'm used to it. I've been called the N word and names so many times in substance it means nothing to me. In principle it means everything.
So...I waited another 4 minutes or so chasing the bartender up and down the bar. After receiving zero attention from the bar tender and my ear tiring of the passive racism I finally just gave up and went back to the table. Noticing there was nmo water yet I went to the service area and got it.
As we're waiting another 5 minutes or so for our order a nice woman comes in with her baby stroller etc with her 1 adult party. We had a large rolling travel bag so we moved it and ourselves to one table over. The table had just been vacated by the previous patron so it needed to be cleaned and setup for my Wife and I.
Once again the casual waiter strolls through looks at us, I mention our order is eat it. He directs me to the cashier and keeps it movin. So I go to the cashier and let her know it's eat in. She seem flustered but helped get it in motion. We waited another 10 minutes and I decided to go to the bar to get my beer. I mean it was like we weren't even there. Went to the bar as I'm waiting a younger Female employee, again not seeing me, comes behind me and starts telling the bartender "There's a man here he order to go, but now wants it in"..she was mad I mean like demeaning.
I turned around and said, "Hi that's me". And I think she was shocked because she looked at me and tried to just play it off. And still didn't even address my order. So I asked if she could just keep to go so we could bounce.
On the way to get the food from the prep area, I observed the same young woman laughing with a tall Male employee with short dreadlocks and indicating towards me. I think she was embarrassed, but I don't think the way to handle that is to be belittling and abusive to the customer. The same for the young man that mean mugged me as I went to fetch the order.
We finally get it after probably 30 minutes and headed ot the pier to try and salvage our days dinning out experience. We leave and my Wife and I are so kind of shocked from the experience, we throw the food in the trash!
After experience - what must be mostly poor management and bad hiring decisions - poor customer service, bad attitudes, immature behavior, and seeming resentment of their own customers, we felt we could not trust the food seemingly delicious or not. There were preparation issues, but I've said enough.
