You know what this place gets points for? Quirkiness.
Quirky server
Quirky decor (lots of mid-tone, orange-y shades)
Quirky menu
Quirky flavors
Let's start with our server: she was like everyone's slightly eccentric grandma. A little absent-minded ("Oh, did you want bread while you were waiting 25 min for rest of your party?") and a little sassy ("You look like you wouldn't like things that are too sweet"). Tres fun.
The decor: I just remember orange. Not a bad thing. But lots of orange tones. Then again, maybe I'm color-blind and no one else saw this. Or maybe I have horrible color memory.
The menu: they want you to do the 3-course prix fixe option. There's only about 5 things not in the prix fixe. Why? As quirky grandma explained, that's how the chef likes the flavors to unroll. Yes, unroll. So behold, options like: lamb's head soup (gar?), string oats-y soup thing (forget the name but it was very unusual) and the most interesting combination of greens, nuts and meats around.
The flavors: My boyfriend had the oat-y soup, which was delicious, served with roasted chestnuts. My friend's salad was arugula heaven (I love me some Obama salad) and I totally forget my own app but remember loving the potatoes it came with.
Entrees: chicken all around. Friend and I had the same chicken (first item on the list) and boyfriend had the chicken + chicken sausage. So much chicken! We were all cawing by the end, haha. Seriously, though, it was all very well done and the flavors were very unusual. Orrrr....quirky, you might say. Salty with sweet, spice-laden with...sweet, tender with somewhat dry (parts of the chicken), savory with spice. Okay, I am repeating myself but that is because the flavors didn't always contrast, just vary.
Finally, dessert. Get the prune cake thing. Interesting ice-cream. Get the cardamon thing. Don't get the one with toasted marshmallow unless you have room for it. The boyfriend thought he did and was very, very wrong. Ten minutes later, we were all groaning in pain trying to help him finish it.
Overall, come here with a sense of humor and a wide palate and you're definitely in for an experience.
