10 Essential Dallas-Fort Worth African Restaurants - Eater Dallas

"For those who make the drive to Euless, Congolese cuisine await — including a superb goat stew. The samosas and epinard (spinach) are also worth ordering. Service is sometimes slow, but the food is always worth the wait." - W. Trace Miller

This restaurant is cozy and the staff is friendly. We ordered Pork Ribs, Chicken, Tilapia, Yam Fufu, and drinks. Overall, the food was good and tasted fresh. The Tilapia is the whole fish with head and bones. The dishes are a bit pricey, but we had a good experience.

Google
I was very happy with the food and the service! Goat stew is to die for!! 100% recommend! And the prices were very much reasonable for the amount of food you get which can easily feed two. I loved the jelof rice and I like that the give you the spice on the side:) I was happy with the customer service and the high quality of home cooked meal, I will be returning!

Google
Such amazing food! We got the yam fufu egosi soup and oxtail. Everything was so flavorful and we can’t wait to come back! The kids loved it and ate most of it!! The owners are so sweet and kind. Love this gem! 💎

Aden K

Google
So good! I’ve been meaning to try fufu and I got the yam fufu- I highly recommend. So good!!!! 😋 authentic, tasty, and everything I could ask for. The owner is so sweet 🥹 I highly recommend the samosas too! You honestly can’t go wrong here

Google
I was in Dallas from the Mid-West for a Gartner conference. Google search and proximity to my hotel brought me to “Exotic Grill”. The owner was very graceful. She went above and beyond to provide the meal I needed and even suggested great combinations/alternatives. I ended up getting the Mackerel fish and Jollof rice. Boyyyyy! this combo was off the charts! I loved it and originally had intentions to take a portion back to my hotel for later but the picture below shows that was not how that transpired 😊 She went out of her way to get me some fried yam! That was where she stole my heart ❤️. I have a fried yam addiction and just can’t help it. The yam she brought me (free) were as crisp as my mother Inlaw and my wife would make them for me. I had a great time here and highly recommend!

Google
Traditional African comfort food the only place in the Dfw I go too. Stopped by after taking my best friend to the airport food was made fresh to order jollof rice beef brochette spinach and fufu. The owner and her son are so warm and welcoming they even let my mom taste one of the homemade oxtails she had just finished making. Wish I could give them 10x

Google
A hole in a wall restaurant that serves Nigerian food. The chicken with jollof rice was good but the chicken was a bit overcooked. On the bright side, the staff was friendly.

Yasmina R

Google
First experience with African food so can’t make a comparison but the food was so underwhelming. The kabob meat was tough and am sure it’s old. The fufu was not for me. The EGUSI soup had an unpleasant aftertaste. I’m not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to taste or not because people always hype it up. The customer service was really good. They checked up on A multiple times and we’re willing to address any concerns we had. I just don’t know if I like African food.

Yelp
A very casual restaurant. We didn't go with a huge appetite so we shared some fufu, fumbwa, and their beef kabobs (pictures). I enjoyed all of it, everything was flavorful and prepared perfectly. The service was quick and friendly. Very consistent as my boyfriend has been going for years now. I'd even go as far to say that it's the best African restaurant in the metroplex. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Liz I.

Yelp
The food was delicious but it did take about 20-30 min to get the first dish. Overall, it was worth the wait. I'll come back for the oxtail and okra. The ribs were good, but a tad salty for my taste.
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Their tilapia and rice are always delicious. This place is pretty consistent. I will be back for sure.

Daisy C.

Yelp
First time trying African food and it did not disappoint! Big portions and delicious. Small business owned, everyone was welcoming and friendly. Definitely recommend!

Ruby B.

Yelp
First time having Egusi and Fufu, sooooo good! Recommend trying if you haven't tried African food

Yelp
Waited over one hour for food! One fish and 3 sides! They keep saying it's coming 5 mins! Horrible speed of service

Yelp
We were just passing through since our flight had been delayed. This is probably one of the best restaurants we've been to. The grilled mackerel and grilled ribs were delicious and the service was amazing. The owner came to check on us a few times, and even suggested spinach and gave us a bit of goat stew to try. I usually am not big on goat, but this was the most delicious goat ever. If we're in the area again, we'll definitely come here!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered to go one night during my break because I was really interested in trying fufu. Let me say I'm so glad I choose here to be my first experience of this delicious African cuisine. They had amazing service when it came to explaining the dish before I ordered. I'll give them a try again any day!

Natacha P.

Yelp
The food here is so good! I have ordered the ribs, fish and chicken and was never disappointed. The service is good too. Marie and her son are so kind. If you want authentic African/ Congolese food, this is the place to go!

Dallas B.

Yelp
The most amazing food I've ever had. The oxtails fall off the bone. The staff is so nice and helpful. Service is quick and the food is OUTSTANDING.

Ms. P.

Yelp
The food was excellent! I absolutely loved the selection I had for the lunch buffet. I had great service, I didn't have to wait for anything someone was always ready and available for anything needed. The drink was excellent I tried the Herb house margarita, a perfect pick me up with a delicious meal. The naan was on the dry & crispy side but still good I just prepare mine softer a bit. I'll definitely be back again & the atmosphere is definitely giving all the upscale vibes you need.

Yelp
First time trying this place. I had the red snapper with Jollof rice. The rice was good and the snapper was amazing. It was seasoned very well.
google avatar

Alexis M.

Yelp
I'm an unassuming shopping center is some of the best food you'll find in the DFW. I went here with a date and I was eating the dish with my fingers it was too good to try and be dainty. I had the large red snapper with spinach since I'm doing low carb. My date had goat stew, egusi, and pounded yam. The snapper was fried while and seasoned well. It also came with habanero spice to top it off. The spinach was cooked like collards and had sautéed onions inside. The service was top notch! What a great family owned business with a wide variety and banging flavors.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm soooo full. My chest is hurting but it's all worth it. I've been past this place so many times in the past but I finally stopped by to eat today. I tried a little of everything. The fufu was fun to eat! The Congo ginger beer was spicy as hell and got me in line for the rest of the dishes to come. My favorite part of the meal was the samusa appetizer! The runner up was the Grilled chicken; spicy, tinder, juicy! Yup. The beignets were just fried dough (no sugar on top like New Orleans style). The service was good! It has a caring family feel to the place.

A J.

Yelp
The pounded yam was delicious but it would have been much better if I had the egusu that I ordered with it. Maybe Exotic Grill African Cuisine could please send me a gift card/voucher to settle the situation hopefully ending in a much better experience with them. Thank you!

Yelp
Loved loved loved my food omg ! I was a little scared that it was a whole fish lol but it was cooked to perfection. I asked a lot of questions which I'm sure was very annoying but the lady still was nice I got rice and the snapper which was B O M B! I'm shocked i got a picture how amazing it was smelling. Season was there honey ! Get you some. It was very fresh and took about 20 min but well worth it! Pull up and give them a try and don't forget your mask
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
The jellof rice was spicy and the sambosas are delicious. The larger red snapper is not large. I could just be unfamiliar with what to expect.
google avatar

Charley B.

Yelp
This place is so special. Today I tried the stewed goat and spicy okra. Excellent. I assumed the okra was going to be fried because it's always fried, right? Haha well this wasn't, but once again the flavors were so perfect it didn't matter how the okra was cooked bc it was going to be good! It wasn't spicy, just super tasty. And the goat!!! So Tender, lots of meat , delicious. I ate everything. The goat had lots of small bone fragments because it stewed so long. Must be careful while chewing!

Julie N.

Yelp
Not impressed. The steak and chicken were over cooked and dry and chewy. The service was horrible! We were the only ones in there waiting for food and it took 45 minutes and they didn't even come out at the same time. The place needs a good cleaning and the ambiance is blah.. We won't be back.
google avatar

Trakelia J.

Yelp
The food was absolutely AMAZING!!! It was hot and SUPER FRESH! This was my first time trying fufu and okra stew and it was super flavorful! The plantains were sweet and cooked to perfection. The young lady who took my order helped me make the best decision based on my eating style (I'm pescatarian so she made sure I got the dish that didn't have goat meat, beef or anything other than fish) I was overcharged accidentally and the owner quickly fixed the issue. She also gave me some fresh beignets to make it up for the mess up! The customer service here was top notch! Everyone was super nice and friendly! will DEFINITELY be back!

Mushrat I.

Yelp
The food was good we had oxtail which was amazing the red snapper was also pretty good. However the goat sauce was not as good. The goat meat was so tough and smelled off. The service was average and the food took too long to arrive

Jasmyn C.

Yelp
Fantastic food. I had the fufu and goat, with a side of platinos. Very flavorful and good portion size for the cost. The service was good as well. Very friendly people. They were reconstructing their dining area but still let me stay and eat. Def worth trying.

T M.

Yelp
First time eating here. Didn't know I should have called in the order as there was about a 30 minute wait. We ordered the Talapia with plantains and 5 samusas. The total was $30. The talapia was okay, I could tell it wasn't prepared that day. The samosas were good; wish they had a chimichurri sauce instead of mayo and hotsauce for them. If you are looking for African cuisine to curb your taste then this will do. Not rushing to go back though. Sorry we dug in before taking a pics.
google avatar

Candice D.

Yelp
Wish I could have eaten here but the workers don't wear masks so we walked out. Drove all the way from Fort Worth and my daughter has been asking for this for quite some time so this was very disappointing given the current situation with COVID.

Yelp
To begin with Miss Marie, the head cook and owner, really cooks up a storm! We tasted several different entrees. My tilapia was fresh and grilled to perfection and served with a side of spinach cooked with onion. Absolutely amazing! We also tried the shish kabobs in beef and chicken, which were also wonderful. My sons' favorite item on the menu was the samosas, crispy, delightful, and delicious, especially with mayonnaise mixed with hot African peppers. We rounded out our meal with fried plantain and beignets. The food was great, but the service was awesome too. We really felt like we are being treated like family, at this family restaurant. Miss Marie came out of the kitchen on several opportunities to make sure we were really happy with the food. She even made a special soup for me , which isn't even on the menu! Our lovely server also worked hard to make sure we were content. Sons, daughters, nephews, and nieces work there too. All took time to talk to us to get to know us and to tell us more about their culture. The Exotic Grill African cuisine is a hidden gem in Euless, Texas. I hope everyone will take the time find it and fall in love as we did!

Tianna C.

Yelp
First time having African food, everything was very good. If you like spicy food, it's perfect. The samosas were amazing!

Yelp
Congolese cuisine is known as one of the most diverse cuisine in Africa. I mean it's a country with more than 450 tribes and ethnies where more than 450 dialects and languages are spoken. With that in mind, one can travel in that vast world of 2,345,454 km2 and encounter all type of biodiversity. This restaurant has found a way to capture that diversity in a very unique way. It remained unapologetically Congolese, and is not conforming to accommodate dominant African subculture like Nigerian, Ethiopian le Mediterranean subcultures. If you ever get there, try some of this delicacies: Pondu, fumbwa, makayabu, ngayi ngayi, matembele and more. I promise that you won't be disappointed. I gave them 4 stars because: 1. Poor choice of location 2. Quality of service can be improved 3. Service can be made a bit faster 4. Better choice of Congolese music would be much appreciated

Yelp
Everything cooked to perfection and with love! Defiantly going back!!! We have been trying to find something authentic and this is what we've been looking for. I'm so so happy and my baby likes it too lol. Thank you guys for everything! We enjoyed every bite of it.
google avatar

Jacquline J.

Yelp
Super friendly, casual and they make you feel at home. The food was amazing!!! I had the tilapia with pondu and fufu. (My very first time but not my last ) Great food and amazing staff, you have to try it.
google avatar

Yelp
The best African restaurant around! The food is amazing, the service and staff are very welcoming. I highly recommend coming here. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I love the Tilapia, it's always fresh and cooked perfectly and I usually have egusi and plantains. Best African food around

Yelp
So it may be that I have fancied myself on a wide range of various dishes. But I think this place is one of the best in regards to customer service and food that I have had in TX. Those who visit this place should try to go outside the box and have a little bit of fun when ordering food. Most of the dishes are in French and English, therefore, if you don't have a clue whats in it, and the pictures are not enough, go ahead and google or ask your waiter prior to ordering. We have had the goat, wrapped fish, red snapper, fufu, pondu, samosa, plantains, and my favorite, FUMBWA! All good, all fresh, and enough to fill you up.
google avatar

Jim L.

Yelp
First time at this new store front restaurant in Euless. Very friendly service and good food. Had a lot of questions, so our waiter brought us a small plate with a tiny sampling of the various sides. We liked all of them but decided on the plantains, fumbwa (greens, fish, and a peanut butter sauce), and epinard (spinach) to go with our ntaba (grilled goat) and soso (spiced chicken). We started with an order of samosa (deep fried triangular ground meat filled pies) to munch on while our entrees were prepared. Unfortunately, after ordering, we were informed that soso was not available. We left the choice to the chef, and were pleasantly surprised to see the tilapia, a fairly large whole grilled fish. Additionally, each plate had a couple of pieces of the beef brochette to sample. The fish was cooked perfectly, but both the beef and the goat were a little dry (an African preference) but tasted good. All in all, a good meal, one that we will sample again as the restaurant works out the little kinks and adapts to the local clientele. Exotic Grill makes a good new addition to an expanding array of Mid-cities cuisines.

Yelp
I was looking around yelp for someplace in the neighborhood I have overlooked. They had great reviews so I gave it a shot. In a word, fantastic. It's a little out of the way place but my meal was wonderful. I had the goat stew with rice and spinach. The owners were very nice and gave me great recommendations. I can't wait to go back and try some other things on the menu.

Yelp
Had a craving for goat soup! Went to this establishment for the first time. Ordered goat and fufu . When order came out I looked at my food. What to my surprise 4 goat bones in a styrofoam cover dish and gravy. I asked do you have a plastic covered container as when I get home majority of my small portion will be wasted in the bag. Much to my surprise they didn't have any. I was very disappointed in the size for the price. Not happy at all. When I voiced my concern the lady behind the counter stated "Do you know that goat is not cheap?!" I replied back to her and said come on now this is ridiculous! This is not right! I'm paying for 3 bones and watery gravy! (That's what it looked like to me) . I even showed it to the two people that was also waiting for food. They replied wow! She's right by asking me that question and my reply is -Goat meat is not cheap but the portion you gave me was! Do better next time! She beckoned another lady from back kitchen and she came to the front. I asked for a full refund and they gave me my full refund. Thank you!

Skyla D.

Yelp
My family and I wanted to try fufu for the first time on December 30th, 2021 and I am so glad that Exotic Grill African Cuisine was the place we went! We were greeted by the owner and was warmly welcomed! We we're unsure what to get at first and a little worried, but the customer service was great! Our server recommended us his favorite dishes and most popular dishes! We ended up getting the goat stew, chicken, ribs, beef shish kabob, yam fufu, ugali fufu, egusi, and samosas. Boy oh boy all that food was 100% worth it. We definitely left nothing left behind, practically a clean dish! The service is amazing, such heart warming and genuine people. Will definitely come back next time we visit Texas again!

Swaleha N.

Yelp
Good food a bit pricey. Just make sure you call before you come if you are taking out

Vee M.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try fufu for awhile now and Google the closest African restaurant near me and this place popped up. The service is very slow. We've never been there before so we wanted to actually see the menu to order our food to go. My advice is if you know what you want call your order in way in advance because it was over an hour wait for our food. While we were there people who called their order in still had to wait awhile for their food. The staff are very nice but the wait was horrible. I personally think the price of the food was way to expensive for the portion that was given. So on the menu I ordered Taba (goat meat) with sauce, mikila (oxtail), fufu, fumbwa, and beignet. The taba was $19.99 which was suppose to come with a side which I chose fufu and was charged an extra $5 for. The oxtail was also $19.99 which was SUPPOSE to come with 4 pieces, but I only got 2 and it did not come with any side, the fumbwa was $6.99 which was portion like a side item, fufu was $5, and beignet was $5 (10 pieces). I would give them a 5 star for the flavor of the food. Everything we ordered was DELICIOUS, and very flavorful. The oxtail and goat had a hint of sweetness to it. The fumbwa was interesting. I think they put peanut butter in it. It goes well with the fufu. The fufu didn't have any flavor. It's really sticky. The beignet I believe is made out of plantain. It was weird because I thought it would be considered a dessert because it's a little sweet but they served it with a side of chili and a packet of mayo??? I have to say I was very impressed with how good the food tasted, but the price is too expensive for the portion that was given. Probably wouldn't go back

Yelp
Such a warm and friendly atmosphere. The reviews of this place were on the money. Miss Marie was very friendly and extremely courteous. I ordered the goat stew and was looking forward to it, but she told me.she swapped it out for lamb instead. However that did not disappoint. She suggested spinach as a side vegetable and it came with rice on a plate. To me as a meat eating Catholic South Indian, the meal was familiar but different and i started to reminisce of the places back home. I also ordered the beef samosas, per her suggestion and mentioned in other reviews. Again similar but different to the ones back home for me, except this one has beef and carrot, Yuum!! I highly recommend this place and I ended up here purely by chance. I dropped off someone at the airport and I had a long drive back home, and it was 5:30 and I wanted to have a nice hearty meal before driving 3 hrs.

Yelp
The food was so good! Very clean place inside, also the host was super nice as well. I definitely recommend this place to everyone!

Ryan M.

Yelp
Super Salty I Couldn't Finish.... had a side of jollo rice and beef kabob. Drove from Allen, Tx I've wanted this place for a while, disappointed.

Yelp
This quaint authentic Congolese restaurant served everything prepared to order and delicious. If you are unfamiliar with the cuisine, the amazing staff will assist you decide what to get. The lovely owner even let me sample a few items before I made my decision. Definitely worth trying if you are in the area.

Ifeanyi E.

Yelp
I will never ever come here again! I walked in and they didn't even acknowledge or greet me! We stayed for extra 10 mins no body asked us what we wanted to drink! They seem to only acknowledge their regulars. This is my first time coming here but i just got up and left and it will be my last and I will never recommend this place to anyone !

Yelp
Hello Mid Cities! If you have not eaten here , you are missing one of the best we have to offer! Keep in mind we have NEVER had African cuisine before, so we had really no idea what to expect. Let me say that now, I am a HUGE fan. The Owner , Marie, is not only an incredible cook, she is so hospitable you will feel like right at home. We planned lunch based on the hours posted on Yelp. We called to confirm they were open, and Marie said "I will come in and cook"! What??? Who is this nice ? I tried to convince her otherwise, but secretly I was just dying to eat there, so we took her up on her offer to open 5 HOURS early , just to feed us. (it was not long before more people started coming in ) SPECTACULAR, every single dish we had.. we had the skewers of beef (fantastic flavor) and the goat (my new personal favorite meat), additionally we ordered Pondu, Epinard (spinach), Fumwa, Plantain and Beans... she suggested that we have the Samosa while we waited.. (sort of a puff pastry, with meat inside.. these were amazing... hated sharing with my husband, frankly).. This was clearly more food than two people should eat.. totally FILLED. We ordered TWO plates + and ended up taking enough for a third person home . We wlll return. Marie did tell us that if we let her know if we want soup before we come next time... she said if you eat my soup , you will come here everyday for more; a challenge I plan on accepting.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try African cuisine for a while and I must say I was not disappointed. I had the goat stew which was good I will have it again. I also tried the snapper and it was grilled and seasoned perfectly. The only negative is they are really slow to have the food ready. I called it in advance and still had to wait about 15 minutes when I arrived when it took me 35 minutes to drive there.

Presely K.

Yelp
Very slow also no one ask what I want for 10 min and my food took a hour I wish I didn't order

Yelp
My first time visiting this hidden treasure. The food is prepared fresh, so yes the wait might seem long, but with good company the time goes by fast. The food was seasoned all the way through and you can't beat the spinach anywhere. I'm a foodie..so love love love this place.
