On the Grid : Drink

"Tucked below neighborhood lunch spot Sportello, Boston’s mixology scene is alive and well and living at Drink. At this subterranean institution, you won’t be handed a cocktail menu, but rather will be asked what you’re feeling in the mood for today (y’know, “something smoky, with a hint of spice, that tastes like Fall…”). Enjoy the large cubes of hand-chopped ice, homemade bitters, and copious fresh citrus—not to mention what might be Boston’s best burger. (And—while not exactly appetizing—don’t forget to check out the collection of beautiful hand-labeled taxidermy insects, resting in glass boxes along the back wall.)" - Branding Iron @ Stantec

Best New Bars Around Boston, According to Eater Editors | Eater Boston

"You’ve likely already been to the Red Fox, a splashy new restaurant in Boston’s North End, but now’s the time to return for another fun night out. This time, grab a ticket for Extra Dirty Cocktail Club, a prix fixe cocktail experience from bar director Phillip Rolfe. (He also runs the neighborhood’s tiny, impossible-to-get-into cocktail bar Farmacia, which does a similar pre-paid cocktail tasting menu of sorts.) Each $90 ticket includes four drinks and three small plates of food, plus a little dessert. The themed cocktail menus change every few months; right now, check out the bar’s “Exploration of the Americas” menu." - Erika Adams

9 Restaurant and Bar Openings to Know in and Around Boston This Month | Eater Boston

"An exclusive cocktail bar hidden in the back of buzzy North End newcomer the Red Fox is now open; entry requires pre-purchasing tickets for the night, and each ticket includes four drinks and three small plates of food (pasta, meatballs, and the like) for each seating. Bar director Phillip Rolfe — who also runs Farmacia, another North End cocktail bar with a similar, uber-popular ticketed experience — programs the menu and the ticketed format." - Erika Adams

A Stylish Cocktail Bar Debuts in the North End | Eater Boston

"A subterranean, 20-seat ticketed cocktail bar tucked in the back of sibling Italian restaurant the Red Fox, conceived by bar director Phillip Rolfe as a slightly larger expansion of the tiny, nine-seat Farmacia concept. Bookings are prepaid ($90 per ticket) and deliberately limited — each reservation is 110 minutes and includes an aperitivo, three cocktails, three small plates and a little sweet bite; the inaugural menu is a seasonally themed tour through Italy with small plates of pasta, meatballs to share and more, and the team makes full use of the Red Fox kitchen rather than the limited snacks available at Farmacia. The night begins with a choice of spritzes with herb and citrus infusions, then guests choose two cocktails from a list of eight mains plus one of two dessert cocktails (four drinks total per ticket): highlights on the Italian lineup include the gin-based Uva e Parmigiano, mixed with green grape soda and topped with Parmesan foam, and the spicy Arancia Rossa e Pepe, made with serrano pepper–infused tequila and a tart blood orange syrup; there’s also a creamy espresso martini on the dessert menu. Given the project’s name, there’s a martini riff: building on the Red Fox’s savory Aglio e Pepe martini (garlic, black pepper, Parmesan), Rolfe amps up the idea with the All’Aglio e Basilico martini, in which basil is added for a pesto-y twist. “We wanted to start [the new cocktail club] with a nod to the North End neighborhood as well as a celebration of All Day Hospitality’s roots, taking guests on a journey through Italy’s rich food culture while applying modern and complex production processes that guests have become accustomed to at Farmacia,” Rolfe said in a statement on the opening. The project is driven by All Day Hospitality — the North End group behind Ciao Roma, Tony & Elaine’s, Farmacia and the Red Fox — and, because it’s small and ticketed, reservations are expected to be competitive and sell out quickly; it’s open Wednesday through Saturday starting at 5 p.m." - Erika Adams

TL;DR - Awesome cocktails (like Farmacia) and add amazing food (and way easier to get reservations) Been coming here for each of the chapters they've had to date, and continually impressed by the quality of the drinks and the effort Phil, Suzae, and the rest of the team put into the menu - haven't had a bad one yet. The green bean martini (try it!) and Fig & Masala are standouts on this rotation in particular. If you've been to Farmacia you know what to expect, just now with some pretty delicious food to accompany every course as well - which really does make the overall experience feel more complete. Staff here are always incredibly warm and friendly and you never feel rushed either

We came in for the Autumn Flavors of New England and it was a great time. The drink menu was warm, cozy and had a few touches that were reminiscent of Thanksgiving (cc: Stovetop Stuffing Milk Punch). The team, as always, was welcoming, conversational, and super helpful with helping you choose your next drink if you didn’t know what to pick. We got the right amount of food. It paired well with the menu and really rounded out the experience. Can’t wait to come back.

We attended an event that was designed around cocktails paired with food, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. The cocktails were truly exceptional—beautifully crafted, balanced in flavor, and presented with creativity. Each one felt unique, and you could tell a lot of thought went into the mixology. The food was good and complemented the drinks well. While the cocktails were clearly the highlight of the evening, the pairings showed intention and added to the overall experience. The ambiance of the venue was fantastic—stylish yet comfortable. The atmosphere really enhanced the enjoyment of both the drinks and the food. Service was another pleasant surprise. The staff were attentive, friendly, and seemed genuinely invested in making sure guests had a great time. Everything felt smooth and well organized, which made the evening even more enjoyable. Overall, it was a memorable event that we’d be happy to recommend, especially for anyone who appreciates great cocktails in a lively and welcoming setting.

I took my 24 year old son who is a bartender for his birthday along with his girlfriend and my other son. What a wonderful experience from the speakeasy atmosphere, to the music vibe to the beautifully crafted cocktails and light fare. It was more than expected. The staff was wonderful, warm and gracious. It was evident that they took their time in creating just the right balance not only with the drinks themselves but with the small plates that complemented the drinks. I appreciated that you pay for the experience beforehand so you can just sit back and relax and take it all in. Highly recommend you find the red fox on the door and embark on a lovely evening to remember.

This was a really good experience! You got four courses of cocktails paired with four courses of food. They're cocktail menu varies by the season. Currently it is their fall menu and the drinks are fall themed with spice, pumpkin, star anise, and new takes on old classics. A great experience and I look forward to coming back! The staff was lovely and so friendly. The decor was so fun.

The place is quaint. Nice music 🎶 you can have a conversation. If you like to drink this is a great deal. 4 cocktails of your choosing. They are all very thought out. Very balanced. The food is well planned but the limited kitchen space hurts the execution. From Texas I can say that the ribs were flavorful but lacked luster. Drop the temp and slow down the speed you will get the meat to fall off the bones even without the smokiness of a pit it would still be good. The corn on everything was off putting. Especially the corn cocktail. The cornbread was wonderful and the best part. Would have been nicely paired with a good cup of Texas chili. It seemed that they tried to figure out a menu that was basically cold and could be easily served. The pasta/ potato salad style was meh I’d love to come for a cocktail but not food.

Extra Dirty Cocktail Club is one of those rare spots that completely nails what a cocktail bar should be. The drinks here are the kind of cocktails you know you’ll never be able to recreate at home, and probably won’t ever have the exact same way again. Each one feels unique, crafted with real care and artistry. And while the cocktails are the star, the food here deserves just as much credit. I’m still thinking about the Back Yard BBQ Act, our night the ribs were fall-off-the-bone perfect, and that cornbread was ridiculous. The Fall Act with that cozy soup and the Gobblah, a Thanksgiving sandwich, French Dip–style, cranberry sauce on the side. The dishes feel like they’re designed to amplify the cocktails, not compete with them. XDCC demonstrates that cocktails don't just have to be apertivos or night caps but can shine along side great dishes. The Acts change, the flavors shift, and every visit feels fresh and intentional. The creativity coming out of both the bar and the kitchen keeps me coming back, not to repeat something, but to see where they’ll go next. Can’t wait for the next round.

Delicious food with drink pairings. Every course was delicious and a good selection of unique cocktails. I am planning to return when the menu changes for the season.
