Inventive Mediterranean tapas, lively patio, creative dishes, great happy hour
"EV, as it’s often called, is a more adventurous and affordable offshoot from James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Smith, whose eponymous fine dining restaurant is right next door. The broad, seasonally influenced menu ranges from pre-meal nibbles to full courses, with more unusual options like duck tongue tacos, rabbit gnocchi and BBQ pork belly buns riding alongside must-have perennials like empanadas, chicken thighs with chorizo and a killer house-made hummus. When it’s not winter, opt for dining in public on the broad patio. Pro tip: It’s especially inviting at lunch, when much of the menu is half-price and wine from their interesting list is discounted $2 a glass." - Brent Anderson
"Extra Virgin is the king of casual outings with discounted drinks and food. It's a low-key place for daily half-priced mezze from 4–6pm on weekdays, and even better on Mondays when all bottles of wine are half off. The regular food menu is great for sharing too, with chickpea fries with romesco, “fudgy” deviled eggs, or sautéed mushrooms with green tahini. Get some prime people-watching on the patio when they open the surrounding art galleries for First Fridays street parties. You’re close enough to play pinball or Skee-ball at the Up-Down KC arcade bar or watch a jazz trio at the lamplit Green Lady Lounge." - ryan bernsten
"Movie Pairing:If Beale Street Could Talk (Hulu) “James Baldwin only needs to use about four words to make me cry. So it makes sense that a Barry Jenkins directed movie based on Baldwin’s 1974 novel _If Beale Street Could Talk_produces the same weepy-beautiful result. This movie is about the immovable love of two Black teenagers in Harlem in the ’70s. You’ll know it from the very first scene when Tish (played by Kiki Layne) visits her love Fonny (Stephan James) in prison after he’s been wrongfully arrested for a crime he did not commit in downtown Manhattan. Tish says in a voiceover, “I hope that nobody has ever had to look at anybody they love through glass.” This line is especially painful because, as much as Tish hopes others won’t experience this same feeling, we know so many people have.” -HA Order:Spicy shrimp tacos and flourless chocolate cake from Extra Virgin in the West Village (near where Fonny and Tish go on a big date)." - hannah albertine, nikko duren, arden shore
"With its trees wrapped in string lights and two fully covered outdoor patio areas, Extra Virgin has one of the nicest outdoor dining setups in the West Village. Make use of it while enjoying fusilli in black truffle parmesan broth and mushroom-crusted chicken over sweet pea risotto." - team infatuation
"With its central West Village location and abundance of little trees, the outdoor dining setup at this West Village Mediterranean spot is pretty ideal. Book a table outside, and eat a burger, a Greek salad, or a plate of lobster ravioli." - matt tervooren, neha talreja
