The 10 Best Iceland Hotels to Book Right Now - AFAR

"A boho-chic, eco-certified urban retreat in downtown Reykjavík, this 65-room property occupies a converted office building near Laugavegur and offers a locavore restaurant, bar, and one of the rare hotel gyms in the city. Guest rooms are quietly Scandi with earth tones, four-poster beds, hardwood floors, and natural fabrics like sheepskin throws; the Danish-owned chain emphasizes sustainable practices such as down-free bedding and organic, refillable bathroom amenities." - Nicholas DeRenzo, Elissa Garay

Eyja Guldsmeden | Best places to stay in Iceland

"This practical city hotel offers a decent base for exploring Reykjavik. It’s a little way east of downtown, just off the main thoroughfare of Laugavegur, and while the building isn’t much to look at – a boxy, concrete block that’s typical of so much of Reykjavik – inside you’ll find plenty of designer style, including in the chic open-plan bar and attached restaurant. Rooms are surprisingly cosy, with timber furniture, frilly fabrics and sheepskins giving them the feel of a rustic B&B out in the country. There are some handy amenities here, too, including free parking and on-site bike hire. " - Oliver Berry

Eyja has been a lovely hotel to stay in whilst on our trip to Iceland. Its cleanliness is above and beyond, the breakfasts lovely with a wide variety of choice from the local areas. The rooms are stunning with great character. The decor is the hotel is so warm and welcoming and very bohemian/rustic. The staff are extremely friendly and full of advice as well as general care and help. Nothing seemed too much trouble. We cant recommend this hotel enough.

The friendly staff, cozy atmosphere of the common areas, and the ocean and mountain view of the bedroom made our stay special. The breakfast was delicious with organic and well prepared using local ingredients. The lentils soup and panini before bedtime were also superb!

I stayed here for 6 nights in August. My first room was a tiny single room, dark most of the day but very cozy. I paid for an upgrade and got a bigger room facing the street and that was better because it was sunny most of the time. But the light in the bathroom was not working. I have no big complaints especially because the front desk staff were very kind and accommodating. Location for me, was very good because it was away from the busyness of Laugavegur, but I was literally only a few minutes walk there. It was convenient to have a Netto supermarket across the street as well as a vegan restaurant nearby. The high price I paid for summer season in August was to be expected, especially being in Iceland, so not complaining about that either. I give 4 stars because facility and quality-wise, this is not a 4-star hotel. It is at best, a very nice 3-star hotel.

Cute and cozy hotel with free parking in front. Not a lot of traffic noise in the area. The room was on the small side, but the bed and bedding was comfortable. I slept like a baby. Breakfast was extra, but it was easy and there were plenty of options. I would stay here again.

Loved the cool, edgy vibe of this smallish boutique hotel. The central area has check in, a bar and restaurant and is a great space to hang out. The room was nice, the breakfast was delicious - we stayed at 6 other hotels around Iceland on our trip and thus breakfast was the best. Their evening menu is a little limited but fine. Think the location isn’t as good as others but perfect for what we did, a late check in and then early morning start for our 6 day trip.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and would stay again if we ever came back. The front desk staff was very helpful, and the rooms were very clean and seemed relatively newly furnished. There was very easy street parking right in front of the hotel (for no fee). It was a good location in that it was not in the central downtown area (i.e., quiet), but was an easy 10-15 minute walk to the harbor or the tourist/shopping/restaurant areas. The neighborhood seemed safe. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant, but stopped twice for drinks, and found the service to be excellent and the drinks well made. It was nice that the bar was open until 11pm. The rooms were spacious.

Exquisite in every way! I decided to visit Iceland to celebrate a milestone birthday and after tons of research I decided on this wonderful hotel! They even had a bottle of bubbly waiting in my room when I arrived. It exceeded expectations in every way…seriously! The cleanness, the customer service, the well appointed rooms, the location…everything was outstanding. I will absolutely return on my next visit.

One of the worst overpriced, supposedly 4-star dumps I've ever stayed in. I paid $260/night!!! It's an aging complex in a noisy industrial neighborhood, so soundproof that you can hear the other guests above you stomping around before you go to sleep, and the room had no ventilation or air conditioning, so the air was extremely dry and stuffy! The only way to get some fresh air, but also to hear car and truck noise throughout the night, thus causing a sleepless night, is to open the small window, but only in the first position; it's the only way! The room itself is very small and cramped, the mattresses are worn out and dirty, and there's only one heater in the room, by the window. In the bathroom, which has no real door, nor a shower door or curtain, the water runs all over the bathroom when you shower! The sink is also clogged and doesn't drain properly, one of the window stays is broken, and the toilet paper holder is also bent!! Definitely worse than in Hungary, and for such an exorbitant price! Stay away!! Plus, the bathroom/toilet/floor is freezing cold, and there's no heating at all! All for $260/night! No breakfast or dinner, just a loud and very restless night of horror! Thanks. PS: Even the stairs are broken, as some of the tiles are broken! What a dump and a disgrace for the Danish Guldsmeden Hotels group run by Sandra and Marc Weinert!
