Ezell's Famous Chicken - Review - Rainier Valley - Seattle - The Infatuation

"This Rainier Valley location of Ezell's is pretty compact—basically a walk-up counter with just enough room for a few guests to patiently wait for their order. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. There’s a giant photo of Guy Fieri with Ezell Stephens himself hanging on the wall that deserves a spot in the Smithsonian. And when you're driving along Rainier on one of those endlessly dark winter evenings, the glowing red sign and windows foggy with steam are like a comforting siren song for crispy chicken skin." - Kayla Sager-Riley

Google
I love Ezell’s! It’s my fave WA restaurant! I’ve ordered their catering for a work event. My family eats there often. I most recently ordered for a community outreach event. I actually made a mistake and put the wrong pickup date and Kyle immediately rectified it for me. Ms. Melba also called me back to help! Thanks for always providing top notch service and amazing food!

Google
We went Ezell's on 45 but there was no dine in. Made a special trip to the Rainer location only to find out they don't have dine in either even though Google says dine in. This was my first time at Ezell's. The food was good but the service was average. The cashier wasn't helpful (making suggestions when asked). The atmosphere would have been 5 star if the dine in was there.

Google
Fried Chicken Royalty Ezell’s is nothing short of legendary. From the first crispy bite to the last morsel of tender, juicy meat, this is fried chicken done to absolute perfection. The seasoning is spot-on—savory, flavorful, and impossible to forget. I’ve tried a lot of fried chicken in my day, but Ezell’s consistently stands tall. Their sides are just as impressive—the mashed potatoes are creamy, the rolls are warm and soft, and the mac & cheese? A hug in a bowl. Service is always friendly and fast, and you can tell the team takes real pride in what they’re serving. Whether you’re grabbing takeout or settling in for a soul-satisfying meal, Ezell’s delivers comfort food that’s worthy of the hype. Seattle is lucky to have them! 🍗🔥🙌

Google
It's Ezell's! It's a Seattle classic. My kid has grown up on their chicken tenders (1 pound - half/half, always) - they are a warm, familiar, delicous treat! Avoid DoorDash if you can - 1 pound of tenders on DoorDash (with 10% tip) was $46.04 - when I decided to pick up at the store on Rainier, it was $24.24. Save yourself some $ if you can, and support Ezell's directly!

Google
The chicken was cold crust was dry and over cooked. Really? Serving cold chicken? Felt like I could have broken a tooth from the hard dry crust. Never again… They use to serve warm chicken… back in the day. This location was in Renton on Rainier by the airport.

Gary Richardson

Google
I did a side by side comparison to Jolibee's chicken tenders and they tasted almost the same. What I noticed different with Ezell's was value. I received more delicious 😋 tenders for my dollar. The area that Jolibee edged out in is their amazing gravy and sauce selection. And Ezell's has amazing rolls. If only Ezells had a gravy to compete. 🤔 Hmmm....

Google
Chicken is fine, but the fact that they won’t give you a cup of freaking water drives me crazy. What have we come to when you ask for a cup of water (they have a soda foundation) and they say no? Talk about an establishment with a lack of generosity. I had even tipped! Not that I’ll do that again. You have to ask yourself what corners they are cutting and what profits they are optimizing for when they won’t even give you a basic cup of water. How can you trust anything about the place?

Christopher Krueger

Google
Another great place for fresh chicken strips and cole slaw.

Yelp
Look Ezelles, I like y'all but y'all have to stand out fr. If y'all had things together like the location in Tacoma on 1902 Martin Luther King Jr Way! You guys would be winning especially in the location you're in now. I came in on 09/29/24 and the ambiance was sad, low energy and my confidence in the food quality plummeted quickly. Three short women working and seem so sad also they gave me the wrong order buttt!! The chicken was decent. I had to wait 8 min for a sauce and it was only me and one other person in the place ordering BTW the chicken was hard and super dark... I guess they use the old oil to save
google avatar

Yelp
Mediocre fried chicken at best, certainly NOT Southern fried. The costing tasted of old grease but the rolls are fresh baked. We would not go back. If this is Seattle's best fried chicken....

Yelp
Horrible customer service. I went in today for a 3 piece all white meat spicy dinner, and from the moment I walked in, the older woman putting orders in bags was incredibly rude to me. I asked for honey and hot sauce, she scolded me and said I had to pay extra. I was fine with that, but she wouldn't even put honey in my bag without telling me again that i needed to pay extra. Which i did. I made it home only to find that she didnt even give me the all white 3 piece spicy that i asked for while she was standing right there and heard me say it. She actually gave me a leg, thigh, and breast, and it wasnt even spicy. This will be my last visit to ezell's. They've been going downhill in quality and customer service for years now, which is really sad to see. I am born and rasied in Seattle, and been enjoying Ezell's chicken for 30 + years. To see what they've become is unfortunate.

Tayler F.

Yelp
Hands down the worst Ezells in Seattle the staff is extremely rude to the point of hostility and there's always a really long line. they straight up left out 1lb of chicken on my order than accused me of lying about it when I brought it to their attention!! ridiculou.
google avatar

Maudey P.

Yelp
I love Ezell's for what it provides: fast, reasonably affordable tasty food. I have refined my order to spicy chicken tenders (I think they are more seasoned than spicy), Mac and cheese and baked beans on the side and I always get the homemade fried okra. I absolutely love the Mac n cheese. Those are the best things on the menu IMO and it's always ready for pick up quickly.

Yelp
Pretty good chicken. Pretty good sides. The chicken was moist, and in some instances, fell off the bone. The breading was crunchy crispy, and to my surprise, was still crunchy the next day for my one leftover piece. I wish there was just a bit more flavor to the breading, even a little more salt and pepper, perhaps. The potato salad was very good, as was the coleslaw. The dinner roll is awesome! The mash potatoes were OK, but not great. Just instant potatoes and just OK gravy. Even worse when cold. The BBQ baked beans were good and the mac and cheese was good. I didn't care for the peach cobbler, mostly because of the crust. One thing that surprised me was charging $4 for a 24 oz. bottle of Grape Crush! I passed on that one. Could go to the next door Walgreens and get a cold pop for half the price. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. Would definitely recommend you trying it to get your own take on it. 2* = Not so good. Would not recommend at all. Waste of money. 1* = How are they still in business? Stay away at all costs!

Yelp
The customer service here is always really great! Whether I order ahead or order in person, they always remember what I get and how I like my things in the bags. The food is always consistent in quality !

Yelp
Our go-to place for a quiz, easy and casual meal with an extra soulful flare. Chicken is usually good, and sides are always delicious. My favs are the baked le beans and corn. Spicy chicken has only a faint kick but good; need hot sauce if you want more kick. Tenders are also very good.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
My favorite chicken joint! They know how to do it at Ezell's. I love it! I love bringing my kids so they love it and will share it with their kids someday. Super good, check it out!!

Yelp
Just to clarify I won't review a place unless I've been there at least twice and I won't review a place during or immediately after eating there - to be fair to the restaurants. That being said our family has been to Ezell's countless times over the decades and we love it. Great regular and spicy fried chicken, the fried okra is good. Would give four stars except the sides are not great - rehydrated mashed potatoes, sweet and watery cole slaw without a vinegar kick, bland mac. They deliver so you can avoid the predatory meal delivery apps that are so expensive and pay drivers so poorly. Ezell's fried chicken!
google avatar

Patricia L.

Yelp
I would give zero stars if possible. I am traveling and searched for the best chicken near our hotel. I can't believe this place came up. We ordered with high hopes, and upon opening the box, the chicken was very dark and hard, which is a sign of being fried in old oil. The sides were also not good. This was a big disappointment and waste of money. The chicken was also too salty. Do better Mr. Ezell...everytime.

Rastamaiauguu F.

Yelp
The chicken tasted as if it wasn't seasoned. If I wanted to eat some crappy chicken I would of cooked it myself.
google avatar

Vickie H.

Yelp
This particular location was nothing out of the ordinary - the service was nice and they even provided us with extra utensils when we asked for it. There is a parking lot so it is easy to park and pick up food to-go. Even though this is Oprah's favored fried chicken - I would say it's nothing out of the ordinary. I definitely like Popeyes better. We had the mashed potatoes, fried chicken (spicy and non-spicy), and the rolls. Because this place is a Seattle chain, it's definitely worth a try to say that you've had it, and then you can move on with your life.

Yelp
It must be exhausting to make constant corrections with staff, and apologies to frustrated customers. I stopped by on a weeknight cuz I was hangry and needed a fix. Went in, two youths in sight looking busy. The said nothing until I inquired about ordering. At this point, I was advised that they were closed .. lights on, signs lit, I guess it's a joke ... like the old Candid Camera show ... So why not wave me off, turn off the sign, or inform me immediately that they were closed for business. Just dull, unpleasant, zombies .. kids who should have been trained in service, courtesy .. but weren't .. and where was management? I want to support local businesses, but this is too much.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The food is amazing but they forgot the bbq beans and potato salad in my order. It was a young man expoing the to go order.

Jen M.

Yelp
Excellent chicken and friendly service. Spicy chicken tenders are my go-to order. Just the right amount of seasoning, crispy on the outside, moist and delicious on the inside. Make sure to get extra rolls and add honey. So good!
google avatar

Deva S.

Yelp
Got the Buffalo tenders and wanted a combo. No combo for that item so the side was an additional cost. That's just a note for anyone who wants the same item. The tenders themselves were a soggy mess and honestly you're better off getting chicken tenders from your local Albertsons or Safeway. This was the most overhyped and overrated chicken place I've ever been to. The mac and cheese side I got was awful and barely had any cheese at all. A toddler with no experience of the outside world, no understanding of mac and cheese aside knowing the name could do a better job making it. In all I don't recommend this place at all, save your money and go elsewhere.
google avatar

Ed Q.

Yelp
Been a while since I had Ezell's famous chicken, mainly because there is always a huge line at the location near my house. Today I happened to drive by this location near Rainier Ave, and boy was I surprised. This is a to go only location, so it was no line at all. Lady worked at the counter was friendly, quickly took my order and a short wait later, I walked out with 24 pieces of goodness. I got half and half so everyone can get their favorite flavors. I enjoyed the spicy better, side dishes are also pretty good.

Destiny D.

Yelp
the service was horrible, I got charged twice on my card and kindly asked them to refund it showed proof they charged me twice but was told to call my bank, i my order and literally everything was cold and Mac and cheese was so greasy it's nasty! the chicken is probably the only good thing about this place but by far the rudest customer service Ive ever experienced in my life! just make sure you check your card and food before you leave!

Lauren V.

Yelp
This is a chicken breast????!! Are you serious??!! And for close to $7 if not over???!! Where do you guys get off selling this to people? And to think I tipped for this! Smh. Don't get me wrong the ladies where very kind at the front but their kindness alone isn't going to fill my stomach. On top of that I paid $20 for 3 strips, 4 rolls and this so called "breast"! That's stupid expensive! I wish I had just gone over to the Safeway and gotten food for double the amount and half the cost. Like who would serve this and think that's ok?! Probably one of the spiteful looking ladies in the back that kept looking at me like I offended them. I mean they can be offended now if they read this but I did nothing prior to this to deserve the hateful looks I kept getting. I should have went off my guy instinct. Smh. And YOU CHARGE SOOOOOOO MUCH! I know Ezells has a terrible reputation but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt plus my son begged me and who could say no to him? I know I can't. But next time I'll pay him to go somewhere else because I refuse to be disrespected like this. Y'all should be ashamed for this! I know I would be.

Yelp
I'm not a chicken person but I was with a friend/co worker and we visited the store on Rainer,I'm very disappointed and appalled by the terrible customer service from the no greeting cashier to the man give orders they put my roll in a paper bag without a protective wrapping,no flat wear,(spoon knife fork) rude to my friend about condiments he already paid for ,if I could give this store a -10 I would these black folks are very unprofessional.reason why I can speak cause I opened t o Marriott hotels in California (desert springs,Fullerton) and worked in more chained restaurants from in and out to Carl's Jr.,to old McDonald's back in the day when you had to learned to be a grillman.so Ezells should work on customer service and don't think they have the best chicken in Seattle,no they aren't .

Donmarie J.

Yelp
Food is good, but I just called them 6 times and they didn't answer, it's the middle of the day..... this usually wouldn't be a problem but I'm trying to preorder my gizzards because they only make them to order so I guess I have to go in to order and wait 20 minutes when it's just unnecessary!
google avatar

Greyson S.

Yelp
We love this place. The chicken tenders are *so good*. This is one of the places that definitely tempts me into cheat days-- Ive been gluten free for over a decade but I take a digestive enzyme (like lactaid but for gluten) to occasionally treat myself and its definitely worth it.
google avatar

Sheri D.

Yelp
Thanks Kimberly (?) for working for our continued business. We have missed items in every delivery order. Today I ordered only 2 3-piece meals & 1 lb of gizzards. Nothing special. But we received only one meal & the gizzards. I arranged for a credit with DoorDash. I was going to leave it at that but decided to call the restaurant. I spoke with the acting manager. She suggested I put the order back through and in the process said out loud that I would still have to pay an extra $5 in fees and taxes. She asked what I would like to compensate me for my inconvenience. I said peach cobbler. When my order came, we were more than compensated. We received a box of chicken, two cobblers, & a large order of fries. It sometimes pays to let a business know when you have a problem. Thank you for giving me a reason to come back to Ezell's.
google avatar

Scottie T.

Yelp
Horrible service forgets every sauce I ordered. I ask nice for an extra sauce he tell me no than he doesn't even put any of my 6 sauces in the bag. Great chicken horrible service.
google avatar

Timothy A.

Yelp
Come on. It's Ezell's. What do you want? Chicken? Check. Chicken Strips? Check. Rolls? Check. Dipping Sauce (including hot sauce)? Check. Some sort of mushy side item served in a small, white container with a plastic lid and and spoon to eat it right out if said container? Check!!! Unenthusiastic, but not in a rude way, just "I have better things to do right now than being at work at a chicken shop" service? You got it. Awkward ordering/waiting area where you're not sure if someone has already placed their order and they're just standing next to the register because there nowhere else to stand because the window ledges are all taken up by other people waiting and they don't want to go outside because they won't know when their order is ready and they give you attitude when you ask if they're in line? Mmhmm. It's perfect, really.

Renee H.

Yelp
I ordered online. I was missing 3 items from my order, including the main dish for my daughter. I called and they informed me that they were out of one of the items (corn) and the other two items (mac and cheese - 1 large and 1 small, and mashed potatoes) were available. I could drive to pick them up (at least a 30 minute drive from my house) or bring the receipt in for a refund. They refused to do anything without me coming into the store in person. They were also incredibly rude on the phone-acting like I was unreasonable for not being willing to drive to get a refund for an order I did online. I will not order again. I will be denying the charge on my card.

Camden H.

Yelp
I just went this Ezell's for the first time and literally couldn't wait to write a review of how awesome they are! Staff was really friendly and got my food so quick. I forgot my bottled water and they ran it out to my car for me! Definitely will be back!

Yelp
I'm giving this 5 star review because of Ezell's management team at headquarters, and not particularly for this location. Everybody's comments for this location is pretty much correct, its just not a good area, also not a full store, view comment on 9/28/2016 by Rich W. Getting straight to the point, recently moved to WA from TX, so this was my second time to visit an Ezell's Famous Chicken. The first one was in Renton a couple of weeks prior to this visit. The Renton location did an excellent job, and the portion size was correct. I assumed that this location would be the same. I called and ordered before coming there, upon entering there were a lot of homeless people hanging outside, also they were busy and customers were complaining about their orders being wrong. I grabbed and paid for my order then left. When I got home, the portion size was incorrect, I know this since I ordered the exact same thing at the Renton location. I visited their website to complain, and the management team responded ASAP, giving me another exact order for free. I have visited Ezell's many times after that, just not that location. Overall it's worth visiting.

Yelp
Ordered thru DoorDash and after reading some reviews on here, I was getting a little concerned that my meal might not arrive as ordered. I'm happy to report that my two combos came exactly right, right down to the sauce. Food was what you would want from an Ezell's, will order again!
google avatar

Bella L.

Yelp
My favorite fried chicken in all of Seattle and I'm sure many would agree.. I've been to every location between Lake City and Rainier Beach, but I would not be caught dead writing a review for the Central District location even though that's my most visited. I would actually suggest staying away from the CD location all week days between the hours of 11:30-1pm. The chicken is so so good. The fries, the rolls, all of it. My favorite things to order are gizzards, or chicken strip 3 piece. The corn, baked beans, mashed potatoes. This is also the only place I'll ever drink a Dr.Pepper or Faygo. It's so right.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
This place left me underwhelmed by far. We walk in and there's 2 open areas. So, we stand there and wait to be acknowledged and arent. So, weird. So we move over to the cashier area and I guess a light bulb goes off that we are there to order. We tell the person what we want and he upsells us on some combo. When we get our food the order is wrong, the chicken is lighty and flavorlessly fried, peach cobbler is cold and no sauces. Im not sure why when I see Ezells Im like oh let me grab food bc I have never had a bragging experience at any location. But, this experience was totally off.

Yelp
"Who doesn't love fried chicken?" Had to check out Oprah's FAV chicken! Oprah's favorite fried chicken, that in fact she occasionally had it flown to her in Chicago when she had a craving. Ezell's was made famous when talk show host Oprah Winfrey called it her favorite fried chicken. Undoubtedly the best American-style fried chicken in Seattle. The chicken coating is great and even the chicken itself is very flavoursome. Available in both original (really crunchy) and spicy. We got the original recipe, which was good but a little greasy (yeah, I know it's FRIED chicken). Crispy and well seasoned. Good size chicken pieces and best eaten within 15 mins out of the oven. I love the baked-roll, which are more like a dinner roll. The rolls were soft with just a little whisper of sweetness instead of them actually being "sweet rolls" like a Hawaiian or a potato roll. The rolls are good, but a pat of butter would make them better. The sides we ordered were good. Creamy slaw... tangy, sweet, cold and crunchy. You can get sweet potato pie--yumm (Oprah agrees)! And Cajun Fries! Worth the cholesterol hit! I like the emphasis on clean tasty food: prepare it, cook it, deliver it into the smiling faces and outstretched hands. Service was fast and friendly. Just a heads up, it is take out only.

Mateo M.

Yelp
I was starting hungry before the beginning of my film at The Beacon Cinema. I happened upon this chicken joint and got quite a mouth watering feast for a reasonable price. At the time I didn't know that it was a local chain. Totally worth hitting up one of their spots. Outstanding chicken.
google avatar

Rich W.

Yelp
First off, this particular location off Rainier Ave S. is a takeout counter only, so keep that in mind when stopping by. But, that being said, the chicken is very good. I stopped in just after the lunch hour, and there were people going in and out (good sign) but wasn't crowded at all. The chicken and sides are all very fresh, and very tasty. I'm definitely hooked on Ezell's!
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
Solid Ezell's (used to frequent Woodinville and Lynnwood, but live near this one now). Friendly wait staff. You may have to wait a little for your food but that's a good thing.
google avatar

Paz R.

Yelp
Unbelievable. Done as a customer here. I ordered from Door Dash and the order was completely wrong. Over $35 and I got three pieces of chicken and a roll. Had to drive all the way down to the restaurant to get the order corrected. Asked for a free peach cobbler for my troubles, they said no. Noticed the order was taking a while to correct and I was informed that the cook was insisting on filling all the orders that were waiting before correcting my order that they had already ruined. Never even got an apology for the error.

Kim G.

Yelp
Okay I DEF need to backpedal my bad review from earlier. This location has stepped up and is just as amazing as the other locations. Not sure if something changes, but this is the Ezell's I know and love - hot, fresh, delicious AND THEY HAVE MAC AND CHEESE NOW.
google avatar

Kate N.

Yelp
I'm not a BIG fan of fried chicken, but this not "just fried chicken"... This is AMAZING!!! Ezell's takes it to a whole new level- way above the "KFC" experience. They have both an option for regular, spicy, or half and half. I defiantly recommend the half and half the first time you go. But, I will only get spicy from now on. It was just the right amount of spice- right around a 3 star on the scale. You can taste the nice little kick but won't leave your mouth flaming. The rolls are light and fluffy and the slaw is just the right amount of "wet" to dip your roll in! The baked beans are also really good and perfect for roll dipping. Sweet and molasses-ey. Insider tip- get the slaw AND beans and do a half and half bite with a chicken tender!! Portions are a great size too! Not a massive amount of food but just perfect! The chicken is PERFECTLY fried - not super greasy or dripping oil like other joints serve it. It has just pertly battered and fried just right. They have their own original secret spice and whatever it is- it's DELICIOUS! Sweet staff and good food, that's a win in my book! Great location to grab and go!

Yelp
WARNING: Me and My Fiancé ordered from a food app delivery service called DoorDash two days ago during the evening from Ezell's and when the food arrived it seemed to be ok. We begin to eat, right after we ate our food My fiancé started to feel stomach pain and had to use the bathroom, soon after I started to feel very nauseous and started to throw up. Later that night I had very bad diarrhea, and was very nauseous, was feverish all night - morning- and all day to the point where I had to miss work, and a gig yesterday. More than likely it was food poisoning from uncooked chicken and very bad up sanitation from the workers. Never again we will be ordering anything from any of the Ezell's again. If you are reading this review Please do the same No wonder why they have very low ratings on yelp and google

Yelp
Although I prefer Heaven Sent's fried chicken, this place is a bit more convenient. I feel like this location is better than the original in the CD in terms of consistency and service. Spicy fried chicken is the way to go - snack pack to get the warm buttery roll. The gizzards are good, but you don't get many of them and I'd say that Marco Polo's are slightly better. If you are feeling lazy just order off of Postmates for delivery

Richard B.

Yelp
Do NOT use Door Dash delivery! Ordered 3:30 pm, Dasher picked up 4:00 pm, delivered to west Seattle approx 5 miles away 80 minutes later at 5:20 pm. Food was completely ruined. Even the paper bags and paper food trays dissolved. A nasty mess straight to the garbage. Door Dash app chat during 80 food transit time was unwilling to do more than a $20 account credit for late delivery. Door Dash would not cancel the order and refund. I was informed that I must take delivery, then get back to them. Upon delivery chat was unavailable. Giving the food a cold on delivery rating got me less than $26 refund of my $60 order! Even if you combine the $20 account credit, that is $46 of $60 for a complete waste.

Yelp
My family and I wanted Ezell's for dinner, so I went to this location and the chicken lacked flavor and it wasn't crispy! Since I ordered a dinner combo, I chose the mashed potatoes and gravy and it was cold. The rolls and the mac and cheese were sooo good though. In terms of service, I walked out with my order fast!

Yelp
This afternoon, I had a hankering for some fried chicken. Since I was Columbia City, I decided to go Ezell's. I entered the establishment. The man fulfilling orders was unfriendly to patrons picking those orders up. I waited, waited, and waited. I left and got my chicken from a grocery store nearby.

Victoria S.

Yelp
Bland recipes aside, an entree was missing from my takeout order. I called the location several times (was even hung up on once) and wasn't able to reach anyone. This seemed odd since the lobby was empty when the order was picked up. I left a voicemail with my phone number to give management the store the opportunity to fix the problem but no one reached out. Needless to say, I won't be returning and I can't recommend this place.

Yelp
I love ezelles fried chicken! It's some of the best fried chicken around and better than KFC! I wouldn't hesitate to come back here and get their fried chicken or chicken tenders
google avatar

Jarrid S.

Yelp
Yes it's fried chicken, and yes it's delicious!!! Best fried chicken in Seattle! Get the spicy tenders! Everything is made fresh so there may be a little wait but it's greatness! Most Ezell's are pickup and go to high works for me but make sure you are prepared that most don't have a dining area, and if they do you may smell like fried chicken ... maybe you are into that?

Yelp
Horrible customer service, line wrapped around and no acknowledgment of customers waiting. Chicken fried to hard no seasoning, I'm done with this place!

Yelp
Horrible Service, I wish I could give THEM a NEGATIVE 5 STARS!!!! You walk in and NO ONE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU PERIOD.. They don't even look up at you. Then when the girl finally check me out she's rude! I mean terrible. Thank God the food taste the same. Otherwise I won't be back! I honestly doubt if this will make a difference in the way they handle their customers. I guess management is ok with this.
