Beers and Lumpia Arrive in Fairfax With the Launch of Fairfax Brewing Company | Eater SF

"Debuting in August 2024 at 765 Center Boulevard in Fairfax, the new brewery will take over the former Hen House and Iron Springs space and aims to be family- and dog-friendly with a refreshed room that includes a game room with Skeeball, live music, and daily lunch and dinner service. Larry Berlin returns as brewmaster to the Center Boulevard site he helped design 30 years ago, and partners Alex and Lisa Stricker (of State Room Brewery and Flatiron) join the project; Chef Dan McGarry, a local who worked at Duke’s and Guy Fieri Signature Restaurants, will focus on gastropub fare using local ingredients. The food menu will include classics like fish and chips, chicken wings, meatballs, and the Lights Out burger carried over from State Room/Flatiron, alongside more eccentric offerings such as yellowfin tuna tacos, pork lumpia, a Korean fried chicken sandwich, and a Thai noodle sandwich, plus vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options and a children’s bento box (choice of butter pasta, chicken tenders, or a hot dog, with carrots, fries, an apple, and a cookie). Beer production will feature IPAs and lagers, a porter or stout, resurrection of past beers like Ross Valley’s Repack Red amber ale, and rotating collabs and specials (saisons, sours, fruited beers, pale ales); the spot will also offer wine and Champagne and nonalcoholic housemade options such as root beer, orange cream soda, and cold brew." - Dianne de Guzman

Disappointing Food and Service at Fairfax Brewing Company I’ve been to Fairfax Brewing Company in Fairfax, CA, multiple times, and it’s been a letdown every visit. The fish and chips are a major disappointment—priced high but tasting like cheap, frozen food straight from a box. For what they charge, I expected so much more. The nachos were even worse. The cheese was cold and had this weird, paste-like consistency. It’s like they didn’t even bother to melt it properly—just a total disaster. The owner’s attitude doesn’t help either. They’re always around, but it feels like they couldn’t care less about the customers. There’s no effort to make you feel valued or ensure a good experience. Overall, this place falls short on both value and service. I wanted to like it, but it’s just not worth the trip.

Google
Great experience at Fairfax brewing company. They have a large outdoor area with benches closest to the building. Having heat lamps that work really well. Inside the tables move around to accommodate different size groups. We had the whipped feta, fish and chips as well as the special which was a katsu sandwich. The whipped feta was out of this world with the perfect amount of honey. We also really liked our fish and chips which came with one large piece of fish and a good amount of chips and the the katsu sandwich was perfectly cooked. I will also say that the food came out incredibly quickly!

Google
A great place to settle in with a good beer in an extremely busy neighborhood. The outside seating is surrounded by the constant buzz of traffic and bicycles going by.

Google
Fairfax Brewing Company is a refreshing addition to downtown Fairfax and after tonight’s peek at a tasting and flight selection, it promises to become a local favorite. The brewery offers a diverse array of craft beers, each brewed with precision and flavorful names to match like Liquid Sunshine IPA, Tamalpais Tripel and Railway Rice Lager…something to please every palate. The food menu we sampled offered the right size bar bites with a flair- tuna tartare tacos topped with seaweed; sweet pepper sausage on a mini roll; corn flour beef tacos; and the quintessential beer battered fish n chips. With its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to quality, FBC will be a favorite for its exceptional brews, bites and a vibrant community gathering spot.

We took our dog to the new grooming place in the area, and my partner and I decided to eat lunch here. I ordered the fax cheeseburger with bacon and bean soup. The cheeseburger was alright, nothing special about it to be priced at $19. The bacon and bean soup was a joke. I don't know what they were thinking when they made the recipe for this soup; it did not taste good at all. Bacon and beans are not a good combination. My partner ordered nachos with carne asada, and boy, that was the most expensive nachos we've ever tried! It was priced at a whopping $31 for an average nachos. It was way overpriced with melted but cold cheese. It wasn't even all that. I've tried nachos somewhere else with better taste and cheaper.

Google
This place is awesome. Every time I go, I leave happy. I've tried a few of the beers, all of them have been great. My favorite is the Fuego Fuerte Especial. The food is also great. I love the wings of the week... every week has been a hit so far. The service is spectacular. The wait staff is friendly and on top of it. I also love their branding. They've created a fun, relaxed space to hangout in. I would go daily if money and calories did not exist.

Google
Fairfax Brewing Company offers an exceptional craft beer experience with a wide selection of finely brewed beers, each packed with rich, distinctive flavors. The service is top-notch—friendly, knowledgeable staff ensure you feel welcome and well-cared for. It’s the perfect spot for beer lovers seeking quality and community.

Came here after a hike looking for some good food and beverages. Thai noodle salad was a huge disappointment, so incredibly bland. Husband enjoyed the chicken sandwich and onion rings. Unfortunately they were out of the 4 packs we wanted and service was painfully slow.

Yelp
This place was such a great overall vibe. Staff were very friendly and attentive to our needs, they also had a mini arcade in the back which I enjoyed. I noticed the kids around us really liked that part of the restaurant. It was a very modern vibe and extremely clean which I appreciated, since my boyfriend and I were visiting the town and new to the area. The nachos came loaded with tender chicken, fresh guacamole, pico, and sour cream, making them a perfect shareable starter. They were flavorful and satisfying without feeling too heavy, we did finish the entire plate since this was our post hike meal. Ciders were good too, they didn't taste flat which we appreciated. The burgers were also very good but the only downside was that the side of fries felt a little small, especially compared to the size of the burger, but they were crispy and seasoned well (garlic fries were elite, recommend over the regular fries).

Yelp
If your are unsure where to start with this menu I recommend the Grilled Ahi Tuna Burger! It was unbelievably delicious and once I took a bite I could not stop. All the flavors worked so well together and I was worried that wasabi aioli would be spicy (duh wasabi!!) but it was perfect amount. The ambiance was really rustic and industrial and I sat outside to take advantage of the great weather. The server was great and super friendly which I appreciated as I had never been here before. If you get anything from this review, get the Brazilian Lemonade! It was so refreshing and everything you look for in a Brazilian Lemonade and I had to resist chugging it. I still think about lol

Yelp
Fairfax Brew Co is just consistently excellent: amazing food, incredible beer, friendly+professional service, and a really nice and inviting environment -- all at really reasonable prices. Whoever is brewing their beer is absolutely world class. The IPAs and pilsners are as good as I've had anywhere. The Tamalpais Tripel was magic. The food selection is similarly pro: the Korean BBQ wings special were unreal. The salads were excellent. Mains like the fish tacos or steak were way beyond any brew-pub food. And the offerings for the kids were perfect. There's also a great arcade backroom for the little ones (and little ones at heart!) that kept us entertained before and after our meal. The staff strikes the perfect balance of being attentive but giving space. Watching the sun set from the outside space was otherworldly. FBC makes me feel like I've been invited into some brewpub amusement park that's got everything I could ever want -- and some things I had no idea I'd like. If I could give it six stars, I would.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped here for a layover meal while training for the ALC. We didn't want to eat too much because we had to bike back to SF on our full tummies! We settled on the fried fish tacos (come with the two), and the crab roll. Little did we know-the tacos came with the most delicious Baja side salad ever! Seriously, it was so good! It had jicama! It was tossed perfectly in a sublime semi sweet dressing! The lettuce was fresh and full of watery crunch, my goodness! Best side salad ever. The fish tacos were excellent too! Fried, crunchy, hot! Filling. The crab roll was super good too, the spicy aioli had some zing to it. Overall we loved our experience here. Oh yea, that the sweet waiter that called us (and probably everyone) "babe" was super nice too!! Very welcoming experience, thank you sweet waiter! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Got the fish tacos and pork lumpia. Out of this world good, but the highlight of my meal had to be Laser Coyote Hazy IPA (made with real lasers) I took a pic for all y'all to enjoy. #nofilter Dan the man was a great conversationalists and even better bartender. The ambience was chill af ong no cap bussin

Yelp
Love the ease of getting a couple of four packs. We had back to back dinner parties and was able to show up with great beer.
google avatar

Derek S.

Yelp
The grilled fish tacos were delicious and a nice portion size - not too big not too small. It comes with the El Centro Street salad (also quite good). Thought this was a great pairing. The pork Lumpia were also really tasty! I'd be back to try some different menu items- they have a great looking menu and the new space is a great place for a causal bite (and brew).

Yelp
Didn't eat here yet. But very clean and super nice redo of previous brewery places in the same location. The service and ambiance is very nice. I've never sat in a more comfortable bar seat. And a not-so-secret Protip - There are two Skee-Ball machines by the bathroom!
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Food was outstanding, the chicken sandwich is great, the fries were crispy outside and soft in the middle, we really enjoyed the setting in downtown Fairfax. I also tried the coyote hazy was great as well.
google avatar

Nickol M.

Yelp
The food was really great here. The ambiance was great and the servers were really nice. They did forget our appetizers but when reminded they brought out a free treat for us. We had burger, fish tacos, and cheesesteak. The cheesesteak was not huge but the flavor was one of the best I've had in years. Didn't miss the excess meat at all. The dressing put on house salad was amazing!
google avatar

Riley H.

Yelp
Fairfax brewing co is super great! They have great seating, cozy vibes, and overall a nice restaurant layout. The garlic fries are insane too
google avatar

Karina M.

Yelp
We're so glad we tried this new brewery in Marin County! The beer is amazing, we tried the Laser Coyote hazy ipa and Tamalpais triple and we did an order of salmon tacos and fried chicken sandwich (this is the best!). All the people working here are so polite and amazing. I really recommend this place for sure.

Yelp
I used to frequent Iron Springs often and was sad hearing they were closing. When Fairfax Brewing Company appeared as a suggestion on Yelp, I knew I had to visit. Much of the beautiful charm of Iron Springs continues with Fairfax Brewing Company, and many other aspects are elevated and improved. I definitely enjoyed the food and beer options at Fairfax Brewing Company. Portions are generous, taste good and the staff very professional and helpful. Christian was awesome and Aaron was great. Looking forward to visiting again soon.

Yelp
Fairfax Brewing Company has become one of our favorite spots because of how family friendly it is. Our favorite items from the menu that we've tried so far are the Fax Cheeseburger (+ bacon), Fax Fish & Chips, and Los Nachos Hermanos (+ asada chicken). We sometimes like to swap out fries for onion rings which we love since the batter is nice and airy. Their new Macadeamia Crusted Spicy Tuna Roll is great too. There's a lot nearby that makes it easy to park. They occasionally have specials posted on their Instagram page but we haven't gotten a chance to visit yet during the times they have them.

Yelp
I recently found out about Fairfax Brewing Company and we were excited to give it a try. There's parking right next to it, but when we arrived the lot was close to full. The space was a decent size, with some bar tops on one part and booth seating on the other end. We were surprised by how many kids there were - we had an early dinner and most parties were there with kids. Definitely a kid friendly spot! They have some outdoor seating as well, but only heat lamps on a limited area. Our server was really welcoming and offered a few splashes to try before making a decision on a beer. I ended up going for their hazy, which was refreshing and went great with our meal. We tried out their fish and chips, which was a great portion especially for the price. It comes with two reasonably sized pieces of fish, with a light batter that was unfortunately just a touch soggy. It also comes with some fries which our toddler devoured. We also tried out their burger, which was cooked to a perfect medium. We added on avocado and bacon. The avocado was added below the patty, which unfortunately made the burger quite soggy however. We also upgraded our fries to onion rings, which were really light and crispy. Overall, we really enjoyed our first visit to Fairfax Brewing Company. There were a few areas where the food could be improved upon, but all in all we had a great time and loved that it is very kid friendly. I definitely see myself going back to try out more beers and food items!

Yelp
We love Fairfax Brewing Co! It has a great community vibe, yummy food and a fun game room for the kids. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We've been coming here ever since they opened and the food just continues to get better and the service as well although, in my opinion, the service was always exceptional. Food can always be refined. And let me tell you we are coming back week to week and loving it. The poke tacos are divine the steak fries, incredible. Literally everything and of course, the beer and the wine selection. Oh, and they were playing Steel Pulse the whole album who can complain with that great ambience and don't forget to bring your final beverage back to the game room for a little fun before you go home !

Dave L.

Yelp
Been to the BrewCo in Fairfax multiple times now. The food has been great since day one. The burger is top notch and the 'McDonald's style' fries are legit. But the menu is varied - love the lumpia, bulgogi, tacos and nachos as well. The recent revelation though is how much better the beer is now than when it first opened. I've always liked their Pastori pilsner, Fuego Fuerte lager, and Repack Red amber, but the Lazer Coyote Hazy is awesome now as is Town & Country IPA and the Liquid Sunshine Double IPA. Great, friendly atmosphere, lots of space, and the MOST comfortable bar seats ever! Works perfect for lunch, dinner, and just some good beer drinking. Get there!

Yelp
Hallelujah! So excited to have Fairfax Brewery open and see it "bring back the joy" that has been missing since the closure of Iron Springs. The interior is slightly more upscale than in the Iron Springs era (I couldn't even bring myself to compare to the unfortunately but justifiably short lived Hen House days). Tonight I walked in to make a take out order and it was pulsing with crowded energy. Nevertheless the efficient team promptly took my order and it was ready before the promised twenty minutes. My burger with smashed avocado and melted onions plus fries was very good (knowing that fries don't transport well). Kids reported that nachos and fried chicken sando tasty too. Looking forward to a wonderful future together!
google avatar

Shane H.

Yelp
I recently went to this establishment in an effort to have dinner. The first thing I noticed from when this was Iron Springs was that they've reconfigured the interior so there's less space to sit and eat. You also walk in and there's no one there to greet you, no clearly evident sign saying, "Please wait to be seated" or anything like that. Seeing no obstacles, we sat down at an empty table, excited to try this place and it was only THEN an employee swooped in, told us the table was reserved and that we had to stand in front until seating was available. We left and went to another local restaurant, one glad to have us and with space for walk-ins, where we spent over $100 on dinner. Until this place works out the kinks - avoid.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Friendly service, really good food and great brew. Really perfect for kids with a fun arcade in the back. Any kinks people are saying they need to work in the bad reviews I'd say are fixed. Highly recommend and happy as a Fairfax local that we have a place like this.

Michael ..

Yelp
Our overall experience was nice, from the warm greeting we received to the lovely service, BUT, the food was just underwhelming. My wife enjoyed her fried fish but the fries were like fast food fries and not in a good way. My veggie burger was not tasty or satisfying in any way and WAY too expensive at $18. We were tired and hungry and liked the cider and stout we drank, but the food fell flat.
google avatar

Trina H.

Yelp
I met a friend here for lunch and had a lovely experience. The booths were super comfy, staff very friendly, and menu creative. Parking was easy, and the prices are reasonable. I had the fried chicken sandwich...Portions were huge!

Noel R.

Yelp
After a number of stumbling attempts by various restaurateurs who failed to even approach our traditional local Fairfax "Vibe," our beloved Iron Springs the new Fairfax Brew Co has finally succeeded, this time in spades. Apart from a generous two-dollars off wine and beer Happy Hour, the menu also features a number of delicious, unique and inexpensive treats: crisp Ahi Tuna tacos and Onion Rings (my wife's favorite dipping sauce) and an apparently newly Chanterelles, Porcini (where do they even get them!) salad--just breath taking! I don't gush a lot but these guys have really got it all together. Enjoy!

Rod B.

Yelp
Great menu with a great selection of healthy and filling options. Service is always friendly and prompt and the beer selection gets better every week.

Michel K.

Yelp
Great local brewery with amazing craft beers and friendly team. A must-visit in Fairfax
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Love this place with one exception Screaming kids. And when I say screaming, I'm talking about screaming at the top of their lungs screaming and running around But the food is great, ambience and service all great But if you want to have a glass of wine (which there selections are lovely) and talk with your friends probably should go somewhere else Otherwise great addition
google avatar

Cristina L.

Yelp
What a fun place for the whole family. Food is so good, specially the whipped feta. Yum! Great place to meett up and talk. Totally recommend it.

Dana S.

Yelp
Excellent food, beer and service. Went back the next day because I was craving it again!
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
It's astonishing that it took so long for a proper restaurant and brewery to finally nail the is location - but it seems we finally got a winner! The food is a perfect variety, well-priced, and I've yet to try something I didn't love. I was on a not drinking month, so excited to get back in and try some of the beers and see what the hype's about. Stoked to have this nearby and become a community staple!

Beau D.

Yelp
Great food and service! Got the fried chicken sandwich and it was moist and crispy and fries were great. Good beer to boot! Will def be back.
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
I want this place to survive, but I don't know how it's gonna survive when they see us and nobody comes for 15 minutes while there's so many employees walking past us, ignoring us. The inside only had three tables occupied. They did give us water in the beginning that was warm with no ice on a hot summer day. It was kind of not enjoyable. So I've probably only done this once in my life, walked out of a place and we walked out. Don't think I'll be back ever again. Good luck.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Huge improvement over Henhouse, a great addition to Fairfax to fill the void left by Iron Springs. I actually find the Town and Country and Liquid Sunshine IPAs more favorable to my pallet than any IPA I had from Iron Springs. As far as food, really appreciative that every brewpub needs a solid burger and wings. The burger is super tasty and grilled just right, the best thing I've had on the menu so far. The wings however are too big with lots of chewy skin. The wings at Flat Iron are much better, crispy and smaller delivering more sauce per bite! The chicken sandwich is solid, but I'd give th nod to Stillwater as the best one in town with their hot honey! On other apps, the whipped feta is interesting, but falls a little flat, like cream cheese on toast. Needs everything bagel, season salt, or something. The nachos are ok, for $22 with meat they need something like melted queso to kick it up a notch. The meatballs are ok, every Italian restaurant in town has better ones, they need some more egg at the very least to hold them together. The garlic parm fires are tasty, but second in town to the Stillwater duck fat fries that are thicker and always fried just right! Both the Caesar and El Centro street salad are delicious (added chicken). The atmosphere inside and out is top notch! This is the comfiest bar I have sat at and seeing into the kitchen is a nice reassuring touch, it's clean and they are hustling back there! Go check this place out!
google avatar

Riley H.

Yelp
Wow, this is just what Fairfax, and Marin for that matter, needed. Hip interior, solid beers, and good food. There's something for everyone, including games for the kids. The fish and chips were honestly the best I've ever had, and I loved the lumpia, which were basically tasty spring rolls. This place is here to stay.
google avatar

Shelby D.

Yelp
One of the best brews I've had. Smooth clean refreshing. Great food menu especially at a brewery. Cool atmosphere and nice decor vibe. Like to see the brew window in real time. Friendly staff. Fish and chips 10/10. Great portions. Recommend!

Makenna V.

Yelp
First time visiting Fairfax Brewing Company. Greeted by a warm and friendly smile. Served with kindness, care and great knowledge of the menu and staff favorites. Executive Chef brought out our food, introduced himself and overall made us feel like VIP. The Macadamia crusted spicy tuna roll was delicious, super fresh and went great with our beers. Service was amazing and the Chef made it an extra special experience. Try their soft serve ice cream made from buffalo milk, not to be missed! 10 out of 10 and I will recommend. Can't wait to come back and try more
google avatar

Alice A.

Yelp
rice beer was pretty good but drinks came with our food, not before, despite it being slow and a brewery. steak and frites was mediocre, everything needed seasoning. chill ambiance. 3 stars with the beer, 2 stars without.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Great brew pub. Great food and great service . We will definitely be going back there soon

Barbara P.

Yelp
Second time here. First time loved the service and ambience but food had zero seasoning. Everyone at the table agreed, and we had to ask for salt and pepper. Why? So easy to put it on the table. This time much better, tho husband's meatballs with penne needed salt, and again had to ask for it. I had the short ribs with veggies and Japanese noodles. Super tasty, but the cut of meat was weird, and I had to spit out pieces of gristle. Wine is delicious and service still great, and loved the vibe. Wish there were more down to earth choices like tacos, etc. getting better but not my go-to yet.
google avatar

Megan R.

Yelp
Had THE best burger for take out and a drink while I waited. Remodel and ambiance is amazing. The service was friendly, inviting and quick. Will definitely be back for a full dinner and lunch!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Good food and service makes this pub a hit. Also their beer which they brew was top notch.

Wendy H.

Yelp
Weird tasting Caesar salad. Almost like they made the dressing with malt vinegar. Burger was delicious ! Service was great !

Dan S.

Yelp
great food and beer, awesome family place! this is a neighborhood spot and has cycled through a few owners. i think the current group has the right recipe
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
We hosted a going away get-together at Fairfax Brewing Co. for some of our long term staff members, and it was a delight! Fairfax Brewing Co. agreed to host us super last minute and the entire staff was very warm and accommodating. The beer was fresh and tasty, as was the food. Everything came out quickly and with a smile. Thank you to everybody! We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

AL S.

Yelp
What a gem! These guys really turned this place into something special! Service, food, vibe, and beer! Locally owned, small businesses like this place is where I spend my money! Run don't walk here!

Shannon G.

Yelp
Delicious food & drinks in a friendly atmosphere! We were happy to find it during our visit to Fairfax & recommend!
google avatar

Alexis R.

Yelp
Great food, fast service, friendly staff. Way better than what was previously there. Can't wait to go again.

CJ V.

Yelp
A few different breweries and restaurants have occupied this space in Fairfax over the years, and Fairfax Brewing Co. is the best addition thus far. The cool, fresh decor, quality beer options, friendly staff, and solid menu will hopefully allow FBC to take root in this space and become a reliable and consistent go-to for the community. Amazing first experience here!

Yasamin M.

Yelp
Sad to leave this because we love coming here as the beer and food are great and service is always friendly. But we came tonight with our dog and asked to be seated outside. My boyfriend was told that they're not seating outside tonight. So we decided to just order food to take out instead. As he's ordering, another woman walks up with her dog and asks one of the waiters if she can be seated outside with her dog as she wanted to order a beer and some food. He said no problem and seated her. When my boyfriend came out I mentioned to him what happened and he went back in to ask the host why she was able to be seated and her response was, "uhhh..". So he just dropped it and came outside to wait for our food. So this experience was disappointing to say the least.
