An Insider's Guide to Ottawa, Canada

"A grand railway-era, storybook château hotel opened in 1912 and designated a National Historic Site, blending old-world elegance with an unbeatable central location steps from Parliament Hill and major museums. Interior highlights include Tiffany stained-glass windows, Belgian marble floors, and soaring Gothic architectural details that evoke a castle-like silhouette." - Alexandra Emanuelli

Fairmont Château Laurier Review: Here’s What It’s Like to Stay in a 112-year-old Castle in Ottawa

"Seen from a boat on the Rideau Canal, the property appears “like something out of a storybook,” towering over the canal with clear skies and sunset making it feel almost cinematic; its romantic exterior and interior routinely draw brides and bridal parties in the lobby on Saturday nights. The hotel’s origin story is tragic and specific: Charles Melville Hays, the businessman who commissioned the building and who had dreams of a transcontinental railway and several hotels, died when the RMS Titanic sank on April 14, 1912, days before the chateau was set to open. Several travelers claim supernatural guests and there’s a ghost tour offered through The Haunted Walk; while the reviewer did not experience anything, a fellow writer reported her closet light turning on and off several times. Parts of the interior can feel eerie — long, almost dizzying hallways described as something out of "The Shining" and a beautifully gloomy indoor saltwater pool — but there are plenty of shining moments as well. Room details are varied thanks to the original castle floor plan: 18 rooms have two bathrooms (a real lifesaver for families and groups), rooms feature modern touches like a 55-inch television in the sitting area and a king-size Sealy bed, and the reviewer did encounter two live bugs and one non-working outlet during their stay. Dining options on-site are limited to La Terrasse (outdoor, scenic, menu ranging from ratatouille to pizza; the vistas make it “hard to say ‘no’ to that second glass of Chardonnay”), Café Laurier (light bites, salads and pastries, note: closes at 4 p.m.), and Wilfrid’s Restaurant (spacious dining room offering à la carte or a breakfast buffet — the reviewer ordered French toast with mascarpone cream and a side of back bacon, finished with mint tea; service was speedy). Afternoon Tea normally takes place at Zoe’s but, during renovations, is served at La Mezzanine with offerings on the sweet-meets-savory menu such as blueberry scones with mascarpone cream and house-made strawberry jam alongside herbed goat cheese sandwiches. The fitness offering includes a health club with premium machines, free weights, and personal flat-screen televisions on the equipment, plus the indoor saltwater pool. Accessibility and sustainability specifics are notable: 11 accessible rooms and accessible public areas (entrance, restrooms, restaurant, fitness center), service dogs welcome, and nine rooftop bee hives whose honey is used in the newly launched "Royal Reserve" body product line. Location is extremely central — within a 10–15 minute walk of the National Gallery of Canada, ByWard Market, the Royal Canadian Mint and many restaurants, and just steps from the first brick-and-mortar BeaverTails; in winter, guests can skate via the Rideau Canal, which becomes “the world’s largest skating rink,” provided the ice reaches the required 30 centimeters thickness (which typically requires 10 to 14 straight days of -10 to -20 degrees Celsius). For more exclusive value, the "a hotel-within-a-hotel" Fairmont Gold offering provides private check-in, personalized concierge and butler services, access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge, and complimentary continental breakfast, evening canapés, and dessert." - Danielle Harling

You lost us when we arrived at 815pm and told valet is full. Have never stayed at a hotel where valet is full. No one helped us with luggage. Took 30 minutes to park and get back to hotel. Room 366 - room is small and bathroom is tiny. No water pressure in shower. Morning breakfast in gold level excellent. Hotel - great location. We get with an old hotel there is only so much you can do with rooms / bathrooms. But the poor service in valet and check in should be an easy win. Housekeeping excellent. Service within Gold excellent.Shouldn’t have to hike across the city the next morning to get valet - and even then had to wait 15 minutes to see if valet was now available.

We were in awe of the facility, but the people made the stay. They were friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The room was nice and my key requirements of a good shower and bed were met. I would have liked having a refrigerator and drawers for clothing; however, we were supplied with two luggage racks and robes. The room was very quiet. All and all, we would definitely stay again. Ottawa is a beautiful place to visit.

First time staying at this location and will likely be the last. Service was good and everyone was friendly. Location is nice but parking is an issue. The value for the cost is 0/5 ⭐️ The room was musty, no mini fridge, no bathroom fan and the ice machine on our floor was out of service for two days. I’m sure there are many other nicer hotels for half the cost.

I stayed at the Château Laurier while in Ottawa for a Rolex appointment inside their jewlery store in the hotel, and at first I was very impressed. The property is beautiful, and during my stay I spent thousands of dollars, including meals at their restaurant. In 2 days Unfortunately, the way I was treated afterwards completely ruined my opinion. Because my credit card was being replaced we did a balance transfer to a travel visa, I had a small $80 balance remaining. I explained this clearly, reassured them I would pay as soon as my new card arrived, and even offered alternative methods like debit payment, e-transfer or a certified cheque. Despite this, I received repeated and pressing messages with shifting “expiry dates” to settle the account. For a guest who traveled for a luxury appointment in their hotel and spent generously during my stay, being treated with suspicion and essentially harassed over such a small balance was extremely disappointing. Instead of being met with trust and understanding, I was made to feel like I was trying to avoid payment, which couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s sad, because I had looked forward to staying here again for future visits to Ottawa. But after this experience, I won’t be returning. A hotel of this reputation should know how to treat loyal guests with respect, not suspicion.

I stayed at the Fairmont Château Laurier for two nights and really enjoyed my time there. The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of Ottawa, walking distance to Parliament Hill, museums, and lots of shopping. The hotel itself is full of history, which makes the experience feel unique. My room was clean but on the smaller side, which reflects the older, historic style of the hotel. Some rooms have amazing views of Parliament Hill, so it is worth asking about that. The overall ambiance feels luxurious and elegant. The on-site bar and restaurant are lovely, though quite expensive, and the hotel also has a nice indoor saltwater pool. Parking is a challenge as valet service is very limited and was already full when we arrived, so the only option was to use nearby pay-as-you-go lots. There is also no airport shuttle service. I did not feel that the staff went out of their way to make our stay feel special the way they have at other Fairmont locations, but overall I still enjoyed it. It is definitely on the pricey side depending on the time of year, but if you want history, luxury, and the best location for walking around Ottawa, it is hard to beat.

We are currently staying at the hotel for three nights. The experience so far has been disappointing. Parking is only by valet but the entrance is much too small. Cars were lined up blocking traffic waiting to get in. We were in line for probably half an hour. When it came to getting our car back, it was an hour wait. For $60 a night they need to do better. The lobby is beautiful. This is a grand hotel. The lounge was also great, and we saw the returned photograph of Winston Churchill. The hotel gym was excellent. As for the rooms, the walls are paper thin. We moved from our first room as we had a crying baby next door to us and we could hear it like they were in the room with us. The next room had a party going on the first night, then an argument the second. A call to the front desk got an apology but nothing else. And then we discovered the Nespresso machine was broken. We’ve stayed at the Fairmont Royal York many times. It seems like a more polished operation. I’m really surprised. Edited to add: our stay ended more positively than it began. Parking was comped for the whole stay, and ended up being easier to use after the first two days. Our bellman, Maxime, was friendly and engaging. Happily, the noisy neighbours were gone for our last night. I’ve changed our overall rating from three to four stars.

The staff was amazing and working their best but seemed very understaffed and possibly lacking leadership in some areas like valet and luggage drop off. We got stuck for over 30 minutes just trying to drop off our luggage and find out where to park. Vehicles were backed up well into the road and could have been handled in a more structured manner to avoid all the issues. Check in was very pleasant but also very slow and the it look another 30 minutes in line before we could check in. Our 2 double beds were overbooked so we were "upgraded" which was appreciated however the upgrade from 2 proper double beds to 1 queen and one pull out was more of a downgrade than an upgrade and made for a very uncomfortable sleep. The check in staff noted they would send someone up to set up the pull out bed. When we returned someone had tuned the main bed however no one had touched the pull out. It was a minor mix up so we went to set up the pull up ourselves but it was missing a pillow. We tried calling to get an extra but we were on hold for over 30 minutes and never got through to anyone for help. The room was very nice however the shower clearly hadn't been wiped down and I pulled over a small hairball worth of long black hairs from the previous guest. I wasn't expecting anything too fancy and thankfully the location, history and old charm of the hotel was what made the experience positive. That said, the trip did not live up to the anticipated quality of our other Fairmont hotel experiences or the price of the room. We likely won't be booking a room here on our trip to Ottawa next year.

This was our 3rd time at this beautiful hotel! We decided to treat ourselves and stay in the Fairmont Gold section. It was outstanding! We love the old charm and historic building and we had incredible views of Parliament Hill and the Ottawa river, so that was excellent. We really enjoyed the lounge in the morning for breakfast and having it in the evening before we went out for dinner was spot on. Great service and beautiful rooms and an amazing bed!!
