Ya Hala Owner Mirna Attar Is Revisiting Her Memories of Lebanon in a Prix Fixe Menu | Eater Portland

"Created as a dedicated dining space within Ya Hala and named for the beloved Lebanese singer Fairuz, the Fairuz Room is a Friday-night, family-style prix fixe experience that melds Attar’s memories of Lebanon with Pacific Northwestern ingredients — rotating dishes have included kishk soup with black garlic toast, asparagus moussaka, and beef shanks with Swiss chard kibbeh — and draws inspiration from the home cooking of Lebanon’s regions and from Fairuz’s music. Maya Massad describes the menu as having “a lightness to it; very much like Fairuz’s voice,” and the meal is paced with bread fresh from the oven, roasted nuts as a sign of hospitality, and staff who talk diners through each course; the room also offers Lebanese wines and cocktails such as sour cherry Negronis that aren’t available in the main dining room. The space channels the atmosphere of a Lebanese home with vintage Fairuz movie posters, textiles inspired by her wardrobe, and a big central couch meant to make diners feel at home — a detail that also reflects village kitchen culture, where upholstered furniture is common because people spend the day slow-cooking, relaxing, and drinking." - Janey Wong

We had a wonderful experience in the Fairuz Room while celebrating our 3-year anniversary! Chris (or Kris) was exceptional and provided us with a wealth of information. The atmosphere and decor were lovely and warm, creating a cozy setting for our celebration. The music added a delightful ambiance, enhancing the overall experience. They offered tasty libations, including non-alcoholic alternatives, which made us feel included. The menu catered perfectly to our dietary preferences, with delicious vegetarian options for me and scrumptious meat selections for my omnivore partner. The food was fresh and absolutely delicious! We truly appreciated the warm hospitality and unique charm, making our day even more special. We will definitely be back! :)

My husband and I celebrated his birthday here and it was absolutely wonderful! There were 5 courses that started with an appetizer and also included puffy pita! There was a delicious bone marrow dish that was my favorite! My husband particularly enjoyed the lamb! The cost of the meal (when we did it) was $55 for each of us and included all 5 courses. Drinks were a separate cost but were worth it! Service lasted about 2 hours from start to finish. The wait staff we had was informative, and super friendly. She really went above and beyond! I also really like the way the place was decorated. I don't usually pay much attention to the "atmosphere" of a place. The music was relaxing, the decor was clean and colorful, the lighting was romantic! 10/10! I can't wait to celebrate my birthday here next summer!

Small plates are served and each one is tasty and is made with good quality ingredients. The only dish that I wasn't happy with was the one with garlic yogurt, which had an excessive amount of garlic and tasted bitter and way too strong. Service staff is attentive and the service is fast.

We opted to dine at the Fairuz Room instead of the neighboring Yal Hala on a whim, and we are so pleased we did. The meal was a $45 price fixed menu of various mezze and kabob. Our server was wonderful, warm, welcoming, knowledgeable and generous. He shared personal stories from the chef around certain menu items that made it feel as if you were in the home of a friend. We would absolutely return and recommend the Fairuz Room to friends.

Incredible experience. Amazing food at a great price. Every appetizer course was fantastic and then the main courses were even better. I’m not sure why they weren’t fully booked on reservations as the quality of this experience rivals many of Portland’s best restaurants. Also the cocktail I had was one of the best I’ve had in a long time.
