Wicker Park’s Best Restaurants | Eater Chicago

"A reliable and unfussy storefront destination for generous portions of shawarma, falafel, stuffed grape leaves, and gyros, Falafel & Grill has sated fans for a dozen years on Milwaukee Avenue. A second location is open near the border of Lakeview and Ravenswood. The salads are great and the meat gets a satisfying char from the flattop." - Ashok Selvam

Chicago’s Best Lunch Options | Eater Chicago

"For real deal shwarma, sliced off the pit and stuffed into wraps or thrown on top of a salad, Falafel & Grill has been pleasing customers for decades. The quality of the meat is outstanding, and the fact that there are actual charred bits is a delight. Eat local — no need for a corporate salad slinger." - Ashok Selvam

Google
I usually go to Sultan's Market but came here because it was late and they ran out of meat. Glad I did. It was an amazing experience. I've been back twice since and have had their chicken, shawarma, lentil, soup, salad and gyros. Very good service. Nice atmosphere and the Middle Eastern music gives it a nice touch. I will definitely be returning and would recommend anyone to do the same.

Google
I love Mediterranean Food so when I say this was phenomenal it indeed was the BEST I’ve had! The Combination Meat is something I knew I had to try since it comes with 4 different kind of meats along with rice, hummus & a side salad, the meat was seasoned well and cooked to perfection! We also had the Chicken Shawarma Sandwich and Falafel Sandwich, which again had amazing flavors. Then to finish off we had these delicious Mint Lemonade & Mango drinks which were perfect for this Chicago heat! Highly recommend! 😁

Google
Super friendly staff, quick service and the food is incredibly FRESH! The Falafels were the best I’ve ever tasted: super crispy not oily and great texture! Their meats and salads really hit the spot and we had to take it home because the portions are so generous! Loved the added sumac and flavor garnish on the hummus!

Google
I used to live in the neighbourhood and this was one of the main squeezes in my life for over seven years. Often a place will no longer be the same, and I had not been back in a couple of years. That is not the case with Falafel & Grill! They remain just as solid. The garlic sauce is as addictive as ever, and their chicken kebabs are still the stuff of dreams. Makes my heart so happy.

Google
I come from a big Lebanese family, so I'm very critical of Lebanese food, but everything I had at Falafel & Grill was outstanding. We started with their fresh juices, then asked the employees for their favorite dishes. We ended up ordering the Chicken Shawarma Sandwich, Veggie Combo Plate, and Chicken and Beef Kabobs. Each plate came with hummus that was incredibly smooth and flavorful. Our favorite dish was the Beef Kabobs! The portions are HUGE – we had leftovers for days! Overall, we will definitely be back again very soon!

Google
I have been to Falafel & Grill many, many times. Have had almost everything on the menu, and have yet to be disappointed. The falafel is crispy and delicious. The portions are generous. Friendly staff, quick service, this is a go to for you in Wicker Park!

Google
I rarely leave a review about a delivery order but this one was excellent and I just had to. The delivery was through Uber. But the food was the star of the show! I've never ordered food that was delivered and looked just like it should. While also being the perfect temperature and tasting perfectly fresh. The chicken was moist, not dry. The rice was fluffy, and the chicken shawarma sandwich/wrap was delicious! The wrap itself was soft but did not tear easily, and the ingredients inside tasted fresh and flavorful. The best part was the meal actually tasted healthy. I look forward to ordering again or visiting sometime!

Google
Where's the best chicken shawarma? It's so good and tasty. The prices are great, and the place is awesome. I loved it!

Yelp
I was looking for a favorite go-to middle eastern take out and boy have a found it! This place surprised me. I ordered the combination plate and although it's $20+ it's so big and worth the price! It lasted me two days. So two-three meals in one. The meat was so tasty and cooked perfectly. Ordered a side of falafel and WOW! These are the best falafels for sure. So crispy and flavorful. I will definitely be getting this for takeout more!

Yelp
Going here on a whim to escape the rain was a great idea! It wasn't too busy inside for a Friday dinner, music was blasting a bit, and the food was ready fairly quickly. The drinks are self-serve. Falafel Plate: A good portion of food for the price! It came with hummus that had spices, olive oil, and chickpeas. There was a slight peanutty taste to the hummus, which was odd. We ended up asking for the spicy sauce on the side after already digging in and realizing none was provided to us. Waffle Fries: Standard waffle fries. Crispy, good portions, and ketchup bottles are on each table to help yourself. Baklava: When ordering, you are given a ticket with a number, so you just sit down and wait for your order to get called. I forgot about the baklava I ordered until I craved something sweet and realized it hadn't been given with my entree. There's a stack of baklava by the registrar, which I had seen but didn't comprehend I could just...grab it and go. I assumed it would be handed over?

Yelp
Placed a takeout order online via their website for the combo meal plate, with some extra meat on the side so two of us could share. I arrived about 5-10 minutes before quoted time as we were already in the neighborhood and there were probably 5+ others sitting inside waiting for their orders. I didn't see anyone eating inside though there are plenty of tables. Our order ended up taking longer than quoted but the staff were friendly and apologized for the wait. The food was still hot and looked good by the time we got home to eat. One of kifta kabobs ordered was overly charred and dry but the rest of the platter was solid. I wish they would get better quality pita, the one they provide tasted like cardboard such a bummer.

Yelp
This was our first time ordering from here, and it definitely won't be the last. The falafel balls were fantastic, and the chicken and beef shawarma was incredible -- plus, it was huge! The waffle fries were delicious as well. We'll definitely be ordering from here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Big fan of the falafel sandwhich here. Pro tip: ask for extra pickles! The falafel is some of the best in the city- soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I always order the waffle fries except for delivery because they show up soggy. I just wish they offered a side of their pickles.

Yelp
We get delivery from this place on a regular basis. They frequently have great specials. My beautiful wife, and I like to get the Shawarma wraps with a side of the lentil soup. The lentil soup is one of our favorite things on the menu, it's very lemony and goes great with a couple turns of black pepper to finish it off with. Also, the appetizers are really good here. We really like the hummus as well as the baba G and the tabbouleh salad. My advice to you is to order some extra pita with these appetizers so you don't run out. If you have any extra leftover, it saves well in the freezer. I have eaten in house as well, it's kind of a fast food type atmosphere, but the service is really good. This is quality food at a decent price. It's one of my favorite things to order delivery when I don't feel like cooking.

Yelp
Food: the meats are super tasty, my fav is the chicken shawarma. And always my must order. Chicken kebab and hummus are good too, the only thing that I don't like is the rice. Service: the staffs are friendly, try their best to satisfy customers' request Ambiance: I always offer take out, but every single time I will just stay in front of the order area, just like to watching how they grill the meat

Yelp
Amazing chicken shawarma! Great spot for a quick bite in between errands and enjoy some great Arab music classics haha! Staff is so kind and professional.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. My to go place when I crave Mediterranean food. Their other location up north is great too. Tasty food, always fresh, great portion! Love their kefta plate to the moon and back with the best garlic sauce. My kids are not fans of meats but they will eat the kefta plate because it's so good. Their appetizers are great and shawarma wrap is fire.
google avatar

Aishah P.

Yelp
Food is amazing! My friend and I split the beef shawarma plate and some falafels on the side and enjoyed every single bite. The hummus was perfect and the rice was flavorful. My only critique were the workers! So creepy!! Would not stop staring us up and down and made us feel un safe even when we were walking outside the street. Gross. Food is bomb though, maybe next time we'll do takeout?

Yelp
I love falafel and grill. It's quick, it's reasonably priced, it's tasty. The kifta kabob plate is delicious and has generous portions. Meat is super juicy and bouncy with nice herbs and spices. I usually order ahead online and check with counter staff to pick up my food. There are plenty of tables inside to sit and eat. It's a very casual ambiance, no need to dress up or make reservations. The yellow rice is flavorful and pitas are fresh. There are street parking spots available in the area and it's close to the division blue line stop.

Yelp
Good food via quick kiosk order, meal, and unlimited fountain drink about $20 The interior vibe is an ME fast food joint, but the food is spectacular and authentic and is freshly made, with a very popular patio tou might get for these summer nights. Was dinner before the Den Theater nearby, and always a nice stop... service is perfunctory but fast, and they gave more pita to my pal per request.
google avatar

Kitty P.

Yelp
Used to love this place until I saw the workers in the restroom not wash their hands and then start preparing the food without glove's ‍
google avatar

Jasmine C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious place! We ordered it on ubereats and it arrived piping hot! There was chicken beef and other deliciousness! I was in Dubai recently and there's a lot of Lebanese Turkey and authentic middle eastern food and this probably rivals to that ! So happy to have found a yummy place in Chicago as my go to middle eastern restaurant! Five stars!

Yelp
My cousin Kenny was in town so of course we had a handful of Chicago handshakes the night before. Waking up I felt like polar bear in Mexico. So, to reboot and regain awareness of my surroundings, meat was the only option. I mean who doesn't love a tender meat stick in their mouth in the morning...? While the appeal was the Yelp rating, the repel is the rice/meat ratio. It was around 6 slivers of "gyro" to a 1/2 lb of rice. Not to mention the upcharge for the "spicy" sauce which was a red pepper flake - ketchup based concoction. Was really hoping for a meat comma to revive my organs and provide pressure to detox out what I consumed the night before. Nope, need a girthy Gyro meat. Gonna take my $18 to Chipotle next time and have a proper afternoon breakfast.

Yelp
small mediterranean restaurant in wicker park neighborhood. had a later dinner and saw that falafel & grill was open. order and pay at the counter, plenty of indoor seating. no frills and service was fast but not the most friendly. they were reluctant to give us two extra plates and utensils. // gyro & chicken shawarma plates // we shared two plates between three people, plenty of food. plate comes with yellow rice, salad, hummus, tzatziki, meat, pita bread, etc. meat to rice ratio was a bit low but glad there was a lot of vegetables. overall, tasted pretty good. lacked a little bit of flavor but reasonable price for the quantity.

Yelp
I love love love Falafel & Grill. The chicken shawarma plate is huge portion of the sliced chicken, rice, hummus, pita, and salad! My husband and I usually just split an entree and still have left overs to take home. The spices just hit the right spot, food comes out quick and hot every time!
google avatar

Makenna H.

Yelp
The ambiance here is authentic and the food even more so! I was looking around and everyone received their food quickly and left their plates empty. They have fountain drinks and homemade drinks that are SO good. A must stop.

Yelp
Straight to the point amazing food! The last few times our family has visited Chicago, we've made it a point to go to Falafel & Grill. We had a wonderful Mediterranean/middle-eastern restaurant in Lafayette, but it had gone down hill and eventually closed. This place brings back all of the times we visited there. We typically get the Kebob and chicken/beef shawarma to share across our family of four (we have two small kids). The Jerusalem Salad is fantastic too -- it goes great with the meat and rice.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Falafel Grill will never let you down! Recommend the chicken kabobs as they are always perfectly cooked & the staff is always great and very friendly. Located on a busy block on Milwaukee, the store has a perfect corner location.
google avatar

Cathy M.

Yelp
Food is sooooo good. The meat is tender and flavorful, the rice is fluffy and light, the HUMMUS was unreal. The salad was a nice balance, the pita was warm and fluffy too. Portions are big and worth it, definitely worth a try!!! Service was good and there was a ton of seating too. 10/10

Cristie M.

Yelp
I've ordered take out from here several times. Everything I've ordered is good. However, today was the first time I ordered the lentil soup and it was SO GOOD. They serve it with a slice of lemon. You have to try it!
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
This spot is a go-to for me. The food is always fresh and the portions are generous. Great staff as well. There's a handful of places around town that offer the same cuisine and have a similar vibe but when it comes down to it, Falafel Grill is leaps and bounds above them. This place doesn't miss.
google avatar

LaNae D.

Yelp
Please DONT PATRONIZE!! Asked them to prepare my gyro with the meat and pita separately TWICE when I ordered because I wasn't eating it until later. After I paid 10+ dollars they told me the couldn't do it that way. What's the BIG DEAL??? They won't get anymore of my $$ too many other gyro spots out here!!!!
google avatar

Kevin E.

Yelp
Prices are too high and I've noticed they have reduced serving portion. the containers are much smaller. it's mainly rice and lettuce and I feel like I'm getting ripped off each time I go there. today was my last.
google avatar

Farah Y.

Yelp
I've been there twice, once for beef shawarma and another for their falafel. I liked the falafel a lot more but I would get both. Service was quick and food was fresh which is always a plus. A super casual environment but gets the job done.
google avatar

Paige K.

Yelp
I was actually super impressed! This place is unassuming on the corner but always smells good. We got the chicken shawarma plates and my husband added the beef shawarma. It came with salad, a generous portion of hummus, garlic sauce, rice, and chicken plus side pitas. It was about $20 a plate which is pricey but we were able to get 2 moderate meals out of each platter. The cons: the pita. Idk why but no Mediterranean place in Chicago makes a decent pita! These generic cardboard pitas gotta go. My husbands beef meat was also a bit dry. Pros: rice, chicken and salad were on par and tasty. BUT THE HUMMUS... best hummus I've ever had. Tasted homemade! The garlic sauce was also the best we've had so far in Chicago. We will def be back for quick dinners.
google avatar

Aishwarya P.

Yelp
Ordered from here on UberEats while visiting Chicago! Would highly recommend this place, everything was so fresh and yummy. Loved all the dips that came with my chicken shawarma plate. Their hummus is super creamy. All in all, would definitely order from here again!
google avatar

Laurynn B.

Yelp
I ordered take out because I was craving chicken kebabs. This place exceeded my expectations! I got the chicken kebab plate that comes with a side salad, hummus, pita, rice, and of course chicken kebabs. The chicken was moist and well flavored. I especially enjoyed the charred onion and red pepper that was sandwiched between each piece of meat. The hummus and pita were another star of the dish. The hummus was so soft and the hummus was silky. The rice and the salad wasn't anything too special, but everything else made up for it. I would definitely go back and dine in next time!

Natalie C.

Yelp
Some of the best shawarma I've had In Chicago. Portions are huge, hummus is absolutely phenomenal! You can tell everything is so freshly made
google avatar

Svetoslav K.

Yelp
BEST Shawarma aka Dioner , ever! Reminds me of the middle eastern joint in Bulgaria that I used to go every other day. I wish they had the traditional middle eastern yogurt drink called Airjan, so it will be the full experience.

Yelp
I wish I can give this racist establishments 0 stars i visited today like i would normally do on any other work day for lunch but today I decided not to order any food i just set in here and talk with my co worker's and as much as money I spend in this place they actually walked up to me and told me to leave because I didn't order food today but I normally eat here 3 times out the week and this particular day the guy at the register told me to leave not because it was crowed or anything but because I simply didn't order food WOW and it's other race of people here with no orders but because I'm black and didn't order I have to go I'll be notifying my other black Co workers at the City of Chicago about this place we literally spend tons of money here but isn't welcome
google avatar

Shayan A.

Yelp
I think the food quality and quantity is great! I got the Chicken Shwarma Plate and it was extremely filling! I had leftover for another meal as well. The chicken was juicy and fresh and there was ample amounts of rice, hummus, and pita bread (so much so that I took like 4 pieces of pita home -- well done!). The food also didn't take more than 10-12 minutes to get which was great given that the restaurant was busy when I went! Highly recommending anyone who wants some solid Mediterranean food. I probably could've gotten some spicy sauce because it wasn't super spicy, but it was really good nonetheless.
google avatar

Anuj S.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from this place a bit ago and it was good. So happy to have found it on Yelp. The hummus was really good. The falafel wrap was also good. I'm a fan and would actually love to try this place in person sometime as I bet it'd be even better freshly made.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
So we're over and whicker park last night at about 9 PM looking for something that was still open on a Sunday night. These? Guys didn't close till 10, so we gave it a go. we both love good shwarma. Some of the best services in food. I've had in a while everything was perfect, a shwarma meat rice salad. Everything was really delicious, and they didn't skimp on anything we had enough left over for lunch the next day.
google avatar

Yelp
DELICIOUS AMAZING 10/10 Stopped by to pick up dinner on the way home after a game of mini golf across the street. Ordered the following *Chicken Shawarma 8/10 The meat was a bit dry as it was the end of the day. Overall I enjoyed the meal but didn't stand out to me compared to the other items. * Falafel 10/10 Delicious and flavorful! Highly recommend * Tabnouleh 10/10 So fresh & delicious. Do yourself a favor and order with the falafel, add some with some garlic sauce... delicious
google avatar

D J.

Yelp
Might be the best falafel I've ever had! Hummus and Baba guanou were excellent. Chicken kebab was succulent and tender. Grape leaves were tasty. Highly recommend this delicious food!
google avatar

Nneka M.

Yelp
sooo delicious and filling! rice, salad, chicken kabob, pita bread and hummus all in one plate. the hummus was fresh and really delicious and everything was seasoned well. highly recommend!!!! can't wait to try more stuff from here

Yelp
Authentic halal meals that are well prepared and tasty. Courteous and helpful wait staff servers. Nice and festive ambiance.

Yelp
Stopped in after looking for furniture for a quick lunch and was blown away! I got the Greek salad with gyro meat and it was visually stunning- just piled high with thinly sliced gyro meat. Meat was delicious as was the Greek salad- very fresh with plenty of feta, olives, tomatoes and sweet onions. Took about three quarters of it home- huge portion. Husband got a gyro and he was super happy with it and ate it all- but it was quite large as well. Glad to see there's one of these a little closer to us but would definitely come back here if not!
google avatar

Haari S.

Yelp
The service was great. The people taking my order were very helpful in recommending what foods we should try from their restaurant. Overall, all of the food was great and seasoned very well. The falafel was especially good! My only complaint is that the chicken shawarma sandwiches were a bit dry. The restaurant had a very casual vibe where you seat yourself and order at the front.
google avatar

Valerie S.

Yelp
Another return to the delicious Falafel and Grill ! Instead of my usual Kifta Plate entree , I went with the Chicken Shawarma plate! It was good but I'm not sure if it was better than the Kifta. The Kifta is beyond flavorful and tender. I give the Kifta plate a 8.5/10 and the chicken Shawarma a 7.5/10. My friends ordered the Kifta sandwich and Chicken Kabob entree. The Kifta sandwich was good but I wish they had cut up the meat a bit more so you could have it in every bite instead of just in the middle. I felt like it could have had a tad more meat. The chicken kabob was perfectly grilled, flavorful and juicy. The kabobs seemed caramelized by the amazing char it had. The sides were on point as always. My friend told me he would give this dish a 9/10. He orders the chicken kabob each time without fail. It was my first time trying the waffle fries! I feel like this was a SUPER underrated item. So crispy yet fluffy in the inside. Everything you would expect from a perfect waffle Fry. I had no clue this spot would have incredible fries but they do and you have to try them ! Another solid meal as always, Thank you Falafel and Grill !
google avatar

Yvonne I.

Yelp
I've come to Falafel and Grill a handful of times over the years. I stopped by here after an appointment in the area today in order to get a late lunch to go. Today, I got the Kifta Sandwich and the spinach pie. In the past, I've also had the falafel and hummus. The sandwich was filling. I feel like kifta (beef & lamb) wasn't as flavorful as what I've had at other places in the city. I also wished there was a bit more spinach filling in the spinach pie. In the past, the falafel has been good. This restaurant works if you are in the area and have a craving, but it isn't one of my favorite Mediterranean restaurants in Chicago.
google avatar

Molly F.

Yelp
An absolute favorite. Love their kofta- it's never dried out and is perfectly spiced. Delicious hummus and gyros too. Pickup is always quick too, as an added bonus :)
google avatar

H. A.

Yelp
I came here because the brunch place I wanted to go to had no dine in after 2 pm (lame). Got the kifta sandwich and it was deliciousss. I didnt even take a pic cuz i ate it so fast lol
google avatar

Nima B.

Yelp
Best shawarma sandwich. Cannot go wrong here. Tabbouleh, fattoush, lentil soup, hummus, all amazing. Falafel is perfect as well. Pita is just normal pita but good enough. Not out of oven like more expensive sit down places, but it is a place that is quick service but very fresh and amazing value. Also, besr hot sauce ever. Not kidding.

Andrea H.

Yelp
Service was great, ambiance was very good, dining area and bathroom were clean. My only complaint is there was too much tahini in the falafel wrap and not enough falafel.
google avatar

Han Y.

Yelp
Used to be a weekly dinner choice but prices have gotten too outrageous. And despite the prices you always have to fight to get sauce (think McDonald's when they first started charging for sauces) Got too big for the neighborhood. Truly a shame

Sergio V.

Yelp
Favorite restaurant for sure. Great food and never disappointed. Ima have to get catering.
