Where to Find Next-Level Hummus in Portland | Eater Portland

"A staple food truck in the St. Johns Food & Beer Porch, Falafel House’s rich hummus exceeds expectations given its lower price. Under cozy string lights with ‘80s hits setting the mood, Falafel House hawks soy curl shawarma sandwiches, falafel, and seitan gyros, as well as sides of the classic chickpea dip, served with toasted hummus, turnips, and cucumber. Falafel House has limited hours during holidays but is open most of the year Wednesday-Monday for walk-up window orders." - Michelle DeVona

As someone who grew up on Mediterranean food, it's hard to find such authentic flavors. I was so impressed with our dinner here and the owner's generosity and hospitality. It was fresh, quick, and so tasty. The lentil soup was hearty and delicious. The falafel was fresh and nicely spiced. My husband's lamb shank was so tender and literally came right off the bone! Overall, everything was delicious and the restaurant decor is beautiful. I can't wait to come back!

Google
Ordered the Greek salad with chicken. The chicken was deliciously seasoned, fresh greens, herby feta sprinkled, with quality olives! I ordered from the kiosk and the salad was ready in 5 minutes with folks dinning in and picking up. The salad was well priced $14 and the service was friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back! Thank you!

Falafel burger was my favorite of all that I tried. It was so yum! Wraps are good. Baklawa had perfect amount if sweetness and crunch.

LOVED this place! We stopped by quickly when we were in the area for a lunch and left feeling happy we did! The owner took care of us and was helpful and kind. The menu has a lot of options and the prices are VERY reasonable (especially for what you get). We ordered the stuffed grape leaves and had never had them served warm before, always cold. Let me say, these were the best dolmas we had ever had, and now we will want them warm! We each had a gyro and it was delicious. Not too salty like most places with plenty of meat! Would certainly go here again when in the area!

Google
The food & service was outstanding! Mahdi is so personable & friendly. I didn’t feel like I was in a restaurant, I felt like I was in someone’s family’s house eating. The couches and aesthetic was so inviting and overall was such a great experience. GET THE FALAFEL & LAMB SHANK, IT IS UNREAL, best falafel I’ve had in the US. Thanks so much Mahdi! We’ll be back next year!

Google
Honestly this place exceeded expectations. It looks ordinary bordering on tacky from the outside. When you walk in it has much more authentic decorations and it's clean. Food definitely up a knotch from what I expected and was delicious.

Google
WOW. Got the king combo for takeout and am thoroughly impressed. Everything in it is great quality and very fresh. It’s a good amount of food too. The gentleman working was very kind and the atmosphere too so I will be back to dine in!

Kelly D.

Google
My husband was in Denver/Lakewood and went here for a gyro. He ended up getting the kings platter. He couldn’t stop talking about it! We finally got up to Denver and we went there. OMGoodness he wasn’t exaggerating! What a hidden gem. If you havnt been, you must. Flavors of everything we got were out of this world. The meats, rice, dips and the falafel. I have never liked falafel until now! I wanted to order more to go. I’m already planning another trip just to go here to eat again. The owners and staff are so friendly which really makes the dining out experience more enjoyable. Thank you Falafel House!

Yelp
Amazing food! Found this place by accident and it was great, very cozy place, super attentive service and the food is amazing! Highly recommend

Yelp
First time eating from here and let me say I am super happy with my meal. The interior is so beautifully decorated and welcoming. I selected something that I was somewhat familiar with and chose the Gyros Sandwich. I only had to wait a couple of minutes for it to be made and it came out nice and warm. The produce looks and tastes very fresh and the sauce is amazing. Very delicious. The size of it is also great. Definitely worth the price. I'll definitely return to try out new items on the menu.

Yelp
Wonderful service and food! Chairs were also very comfortable and the music was upbeat and different. I had a lamb gyro sandwich --excellent!

Yelp
To sum up what this review will say in one word: Wow! This place was absolutely amazing! We started doing to-go orders back during the pandemic and actually kind of forgot about this place. We decided to come here again last night and the biggest comment we had was, why did we stop dining here! The ambiance of the restaurant was incredibly comfortable and the decorations and Arabic music playing just added to the experience. Our server, who I believe was the owner as well, did a great job attending to us and he was very nice with helping us decide on our order. We ordeed the jibneh, which was like an Arabic cheesey bread, and the lamb kabob and chicken shwarma. The jibneh was nice and we are happy we tried it. It was the perfect, light appetizer. The stars of the show were no doubt the entrees though. The flavor of the lamb kabob was mouth watering, and the chicken shwarma was equally tasty and left my stomach incredibly happy. Each dish was served with pita, hummus, saffron rice, and one of the tastiest tahani sauces I've ever had! We were also served complimentary Mediterranean salads as well! Everything about our experience was amazing, and we will be coming back here very soon! If you're looking for shwarma on par with what you'd find in NYC, look no further!

Yelp
Ok, I had not enjoyed this restaurant in many years as I generally don't eat meat. But, today, I had a craving beef shawarma and allowed myself this rare delicacy. I'm so glad I did. Many restaurants have raised prices AND cut back on expensive ingredients and scaled back portion sizes. Not this place. Prices remained similar to several years ago and In think the portion sizes went up. The food was hot, fresh, well prepared and absolutely mouth watering. We had the honor of having the owner as our server and cook. Needless to say, he clearly prides himself on service and quality. We really enjoyed the new tables, wall decorations and seats. It's very middle eastern feeling inside. There is even fun Arabic type music playing. This place is a gem and has been since it opened.

Yelp
I love this place. The food is tasty!!!!!!! I had the gyro again and kibbeh which is like little breaded fried beef balls. Man I love this food!!! The prices are unbeatable for the quality.

Andreas T.

Yelp
Every single item on this varied and delicious menu is prepared perfectly and taste amazing. I never get to add a picture of the food because it is too good to even wait one minute before diving in. I usually order a plate but tonight we had gyros sandwiches with a side of fries. The fries were OMG good. So crispy and so potato-y with the extra crunchy outside, the creamy insides and just the right amount of salt. The sandwiches were huge, wrapped in tender and flavorful pita, slathered in tzatziki, crammed with crispy edged meat and just the right amount of red onion to cut through the richness. I'm not sure what the meat is seasoned with but it must be sent from heaven because it is just that yummy. I love this place. It's small and kind of hole in the wall; for me it just adds to the charm of it. The middle eastern music, the colorful Moroccan inspired tapestry on the walls and booth give it a nice calm vibe. It's busy with take out but we always manage to find a seat to eat in

Yelp
Placed a "to go"order, friendly staff, I was able to order the vegetarian platter with modifications which I appreciated. Overall pleasant experience, fresh falafel just the way I like it! Love the decor too!

Michele P.

Yelp
Have not been here in a while but stopped in for lunch today . we had a Gyro sandwich, beef, Shawarma, and a side of rice so good. The food is as good as I remembered and the gentleman who takes your order is always so helpful and kind. We really enjoy this place.

Yelp
Holy smokes what an awesome hole in the wall! Very flavorful. Comparable to J-Rus, if you're local. Anyways... go get some! I go for the full on meat combo. A very nice gentleman always runs front of house... probably his place.

Heidi E.

Yelp
Such delicious food and fantastic customer service. So clean and comfortable for a warm fun dinner with friends

Mil Y.

Yelp
Ordered delivery a couple weeks ago and just returned to see it in person and do take out. It is the GO-TO gyro in the area for sure. The owner was very nice and he has a lot to be proud of with a great food offering. We will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
A little unsuspecting spot in the strip mall. Been here a couple times and not hard to get a seat! Menu could use an upgrade so that it has some better descriptions. Food was pretty good, the pita could have been warmer or fluffier. But the hummus and babaganoush were awesome!

Scott D.

Yelp
Dine in | Dinner | $20-30 We decided to drive around aimlessly to find something new for dinner. Saw Falafel and thought, "yummy, Mediterranean!" The place is so cool inside! Love the atmosphere!!!! The gentleman at the counter sat us and took our order. Hot tea in a real service set, 5 dip appetizer (they were all amazing!) pitas were amazing.... Gyro was so great. I've had them all over the US and this is top three! I will be back often and will be recommending to everyone I know! Never would've thought this quality in a strip mall! Must try!
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
The best falafel, hummus, pita and chicken shawarma around. Super cute place. Service was super quick and friendly , everything was so flavorful and delicious. Can't wait to go back to try other items in their menu!
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
The owner is very sweet and such a hard worker. And the food is DELICIOUS! I would 100% recommend this restaurant to anyone. We ordered the Kings plate and the meat sampler plate and also some wonderful cake and hot tea and baklava. We feasted! Let me tell you we are stuffed! I wish I would have taken pictures of the plates the food was as beautiful as it was delicious.
google avatar

Kim V.

Yelp
Such a great find. The restaurant is decorated with beautiful tapestries, the service is great and, best of all, the food was incredible. Big portions, great variety and everything we tried was great!!!
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
The falafels are absolutely delicious. Our group also had a chicken shawarma plate and sandwiches with fresh fries. It was all super tasty. We will be back! The atmosphere is bright and quaint, and our server was friendly.
google avatar

Shahan A.

Yelp
Been coming to this place for 5+ years whenever I'm in the area. I always get the chicken shawarma plate, and it slaps every single time. I think the garlic sauce is what sets it apart from other places, otherwise it's a general plate of rice/chicken/hummus. But everything on the plate is great!

Bobby G.

Yelp
Ok so first of all its pretty chill, the gentleman who served us was more than informative, beyond friendly and just a really nice guy.. It took us forever to figure out what to order... Eventually we let him decide on what Megan would be eating because lets be real she wasnt there lol... OK no the food was out of this world !!! It was so fresh, hot, amazing. so F-ing tasty ..... I swear i have not had food that feeds my soul like this in Y E A R S ... I can guarantee you will find me here weekly with anyone who wants to eat lol!!! We even ended up shazzaming some of the music because it really tied the entire experince together and we all really loved A L L of it! The food, the restaurant, the server and the service. If there was a 6th star baby ... Oh ya and this is for sure my new place !!!!! Lol be there in 20 guys I'll have the chicken pita sandwich OMFG.

Rita Z.

Yelp
The food was so great! The waiter was so nice. Definitely recommend and very much looking forward to going back. We ordered the falafel, dip sampler, meat combo, lamb gyro, and fries. Sooooo good!
google avatar

Sawwmius M.

Yelp
Sooooo good. Everything I've tried has been absolutely amazing. I've only ordered take out but the employees are always friendly when I pick up. Also they package great!! Never spills

Maury C.

Yelp
I'm pretty fussy about Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food, and I'm here to tell you that Falafel House is top notch and incredibly fresh, delicious and impressive. I ate there for the first time on Sunday and was kind of blown away. From the first bite of the cucumber and tomato salad which was fresh and super flavorful with a great mixture of herbs (often salads at Mediterranean restaurants are quite dull) to the grape leaves, chicken shawarma, gyros meat, hummus, tzaziki -- really just absolutely EVERYTHING on the King Combo platter was not just good, but exceptional! And the falafel? PERFECT! Moist, flavorful, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, done just absolutely right. Often overcooked at other restaurants, here, the restaurant earned its right to call itself Falafel House for sure. The proprietor (whose name I failed to get) was warm and friendly, but quiet and unassuming, when he should be proud, proud, proud of this wonderful little gem of a restaurant. It was fantastic!

Yelp
Food good tasting Service good only one waiter, not busy in dining area. Ambiance- lousy, dirty Needs a good cleaning
google avatar

Crystal E.

Yelp
I like getting the chicken shawarma lunch special here. It comes with rice, hummus, salad, side pita, and whatever meat you wanted. It's got the flavors and they always do a great job. My boyfriend usually gets the gyro sandwich with fries and that comes with a soda. He loves it and we are always quiet when we're eating the food.
google avatar

Bryanna D.

Yelp
My absolute favorite delivery option in the Sheridan area of De. The food is so good every time
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
Well I hate to give a bad rating but this was disappointing after reading all the 4 star reviews. Pita was crumbling apart and not warm all the way. Gyro meat seemed like it was heated up from a frozen package. I guess if you are in the area and craving Mediterranean you might be willing to settle for this mediocre food since there doesn't seem to be many other options nearby for that cuisine. Service and ambience are fine and typical for a quick serve restaurant.
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
Seems like a decent middle eastern restaurant. I just had the lentil soup and hummus appetizer. The soup was very good with a few crunchy pieces of pita to sprinkle on top. The hummus was a nice size portion but beware as it was quite lemony. I also think the hummus was a little more watery than most hummus I have had. I will go back and try a few more things . Very nice waitstaff.

Jess

Yelp
Mahdi was a really nice man, he had a constant smile on his face and was very polite. The service wasn't too much of a wait and was totally worth it for the food. The Salad they serve in the beginning was really good and well seasoned, the vibe of the place was also really comfortable and so was the seating. Would recommend The Lamb Shank aswell

Anya W.

Yelp
My husband and I frequently buy take out meals and certainly enough it. Tonight, unfortunately, that was not the case. I placed an order and stated I wanted two of a particular dish but somehow it translated to one. I do believe I clearly said two. I grab the bag and shouldn't have checked. Yes, the owner was polite and we reviewed the order over the phone. We returned and purchased not one but two entrees. I have owned my own business and would have comped one of the meals as a gesture of good will and customer service. It doesn't matter if I said one or two, I've purchased hundreds of dollars worth of food over the years and a simple gesture of a comped meal would have not only been kind but a good business move. I doubt I'll return for awhile. We generally go three times per month. Poor experience

Yelp
Always on the lookout for a great casual Mediterranean food spot. This one hit the mark. Quality, authentic fare and great service. Not close to my side of town, but I shall be making excuses to be in the area to hit this gem.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Great Mediterranean spot! Our first time ordering from here and we got the vegetarian plate and a gyro sandwich. For my vegetarian plate, I swapped the baba ghanoush for extra hummus and the grape leaves for extra tabouleh. The vegetarian plate came with rice, a salad and pita. I started with the salad and it was so light and delicious. The pita hadn't been warmed up, but it was still tasty dipped in the hummus with some falafel on top. The tabbouleh was a great flavor and was probably my favorite part of the dish. My boyfriend enjoyed his gyro sandwich and I don't think he had any complaints, considering he scarfed it down before he could make a single comment! All in all, a fantastic meal! Will definitely be back here.

Lucas G.

Yelp
Our order contained plastic shards of some kind; we chewed on plastic bits and potentially swallowed some, extremely disgusting. Will never order from Falafel House again. Clearly they don't care about their customers or quality control processes. Sick, disgusting, gross. We thought it was just in the Pita but it was also in the Falafel upon further inspection. Hopefully we don't get sick and hopefully other customers don't either. We called them to let them know and no one even answered. We are no longer a customer.
google avatar

Scooby C.

Yelp
It must have gone through ownership changes once again. New brighter decor, but the food now lacks...at least the gyros aren't nearly as good. They had less than half the meat than they did just over a month ago. Least I've ever had in a gyro. Tastes good, just lacking what used to be greatness. I'm not fully done with the place. But the next time better rock or I'm out.

Dan A.

Yelp
Nice place, but my Falafel was a fail. They have no pickles, Pickled onion or other pickled veggies or any kind in the restaurant, let alone in my sandwich. Mine was a wrap version(not pita) and it disintegrated after the first bite from the sauce soaking through. A couple tweaks, and it could have gone from zero to hero..
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
I looked up "lunch" near our hotel and this was the top rated restaurant near us. I'm so glad we didn't just walk to what was close to the hotel because the Falafel House was SO good! The service was friendly and the food was amazing. My husband ordered the lamb gyro and I ordered the lunch sized chicken shawarma plate. We were in the Denver area for 4 days, and ate at a lot of places but this was by far my favorite meal of the whole trip. If you're in the area, definitely stop by!
google avatar

TwiLea F.

Yelp
Wonderful food! I tried baba ganoush for the first time and it's a definite must to try here! Also started off with the lentil soup which I would also recommend. That was plenty but I also got the chicken shawarma as well. The chicken was a tad dry but maybe that is how it's supposed to be. You are not there for the atmosphere so don't let the set up inside deter you from trying. Another thing is to bring your patience. They weren't packed but steadily busy with dine ins and to go orders. One server and one cook. They did and outstanding job.

Huzayfa M.

Yelp
One of the best restaurant in Colorado. the most delicious food ever and great service by the owner and his workers. Ambiance is amazing. I would defiantly come back here again.
google avatar

Bonnie S.

Yelp
Ok... I've eaten a lot of Mediterranean in my life and the falafels were the best I've ever had. Light fluffy and beautiful. The baba is smoky and chunky. The beef sheesh kabobs were outstanding. I do t know why this place doesn't get better reviews. We ate there and I must say the restaurant is tired but the food is anything but!!! I will return

Sarah N.

Yelp
The food was delicious! And the ambiance inside makes it incredibly charming. Would go again in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Taylor J.

Yelp
I have only done deliveries from here but it's decently popular so the food has to be at least good. But it takes FOREVER to get orders. And the staff here is always incredibly rude. I probably won't ever eat here but the customers I deliver for always have extended wait times. I'm giving a 2 because I don't know how the food is. Tonight was definitely the worst staff member I've ever gotten. She was rude to every single person that walked up. Handing me the delivery order and saying sorry about the wait doesn't fix how rude you were.
google avatar

Liti H.

Yelp
Best Sambousak this side of the world! Must try! Friendly and efficient service. :) good Chicken Shawarma.

Lucy M.

Yelp
I was really hungry and excited to eat out, because I don't go out that often. The falafel sandwich was really bad. I'm not very picky, but the taste was horrible. The falafel was bitter and had a bad aftertaste. It ruined everything for me. I think it's most likely because the oil is old. Needs to be changed out from time to time! I will probably never come back, despite the positive reviews.

Nick T.

Yelp
In what universe is a Greek salad just finely diced tomatoes, cucumber and onion? Without so much as a hint of feta... The gyro meat was fine but the salad itself was most perplexing. And completely wrong. $15? Wrong again.
google avatar

Kay S.

Yelp
I wish I can give this place negative stars or a 0 star. The rude woman taking the order was enough to not stay and eat. 5/5 would never recommend eating here.

Lauren A.

Yelp
I've ordered from here a few times and they have never disappointed. Their shawarma is delicious. Their falafel is *chef's kiss* absolutely wonderful. Perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I also highly recommend the baklava. But one of my favorite things there is the saffron rice, which is the perfect complement to their meaty, savory dishes. Definitely recommend giving this place a try.

Tony D.

Yelp
food here is so good and the owner is super nice. gyro sandwich with the hot harissa always hits the spot.
google avatar

Carolina H.

Yelp
Ordered some lunch from Falafel House today, as I was craving something delicious! Well, they delivered!!! I ordered the Shawarma plate with beef. It was excellent!!! The portion is huge, and in my opinion great price! It came with a salad, some hummus, horseradish sauce and pita bread. 10/10

Julie S.

Yelp
Best falafel I have ever had. Crisp on the outside and creamy tender inside. Great Greek salad.
