New York City’s Famed Contra Team Cooks Up Hot Dogs in West Hollywood Tonight | Eater LA

"I was sad to learn that Falafel King, one of Westwood’s oldest mainstays, closed this week; the casual spot served UCLA students and Angelenos on Broxton for 50 years, and a sign at the location suggests it’s searching for a new spot." - Mona Holmes

Google
Best Falafel I have had in a long time. Made with attention to detail. Super friendly staff. Greeted by the owner when we walk in, super helpful finding the right dish for my Vegan husband - many options. Also have incredible meat options.

Casey G.

Google
Some great gluten free options! The fryer, fries, and falafel are all gluten free and the falafel was truly delicious! They offer a gluten free pita/wrap and you can get most meats except the gyro.

The G.

Google
Chose this menu over many options available on the strip because was advertised as a drink and side combo. $15 later I had a small pita wrap called chicken Shaorma that was tasteless, had no pickled vegetables as it should of called Shaorma or any sauce. I was hungry one hour later. The wrap needs to be lavash bread and the spread must be richer. The gyros loooked oily , rancid, old. The kitchen was not clean. The meats were cooked together!

Google
I got a chicken shawarma and the falafel side. The chicken was cooked very well. Sauce went really well with the meat and the veggies. Every bit was delicious and it tasted good from beginning to end.

John C.

Google
The best falafels ever. First time I had them was in the early 1980s as a kid. I have compared all others to them. It wasn’t until 2023 that I had a chance to return to Boulder. We returned again this year and both times the food and service were outstanding.

Justin S.

Google
Oh my I love this place. The gyro meat off of the spit is so good. The hummus and baba ganoush are amazing. My only complaint is there isn't another Falafel King closer to Arvada or in Denver! The owner said he doesn't want to come to Arvada but that's ok, a trip up to Boulder every so often ain't so bad 🙂

Daryl O.

Google
Had a great lunch. Falafels are awesome as are the sides (highly recommend eggplant, hummus, Baba ghanoush, and tomato dish). The tea and fresh made lemonade with mint--yum! And very kind person taking our orders. Worth the visit on Pearl Street!

James W.

Google
I’m not one to post reviews but today this was just one I couldn’t pass on. Ordered a chicken shawerma and asked to sub the TZ for hummus. They charged me an extra $1 to sub for allergy purposes. GF pita is $1.50 extra. You’ll walk out spending nearly $18-20 on a small sandwich.

Yelp
*CELIAC / GLUTEN FREE REVIEW we noticed this little spot because of its accreditations (2023 & 2024 best in Boulder) and at first glance I was worried it wouldn't be safe to eat here - but I was pleasantly surprised! their fryer is dedicated GF, have GF pita available, and all of their sides are marked with allergens. The sides are the biggest risk of CC as some contain gluten and they're all next to each other - so eat to your comfort level. The meats are NOT GF. We got the falafel plate with GF pita, with dolmas and baba ganoush. The pita was the only miss here - everything else was great! I'm a super sensitive celiac and I did not get sick here.

Yelp
Ok place to get a fast bite. Chicken was dry and despite requesting no onions in one of the plates, they still put it. Was not made aware they put straight up salad in the gyro and shawarmas, when I asked what goes in the guy only said there was onions and pickles. Falafel was good but they serve it with a tiny bit of sauce (one quarter full sauce cup). Will not be back.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Ok food, tiny portions. I understand it's Boulder and Pearl Street no less, but my plate with two sides had barely a few bites of baba ghanoush and two mouthfuls of salad. (To be fair, also came with a pita and a small order of rice as a sub for the other pita, which is nice!).

Yelp
Sign states Best Mediterranean food is BS. Grilled Chicken on chicken plate at over 16$ and is cut thinner than broken potatoes chips. This is not grilled chicken but more cost cutting for their profits.

Alyssa P.

Yelp
We ordered a gyro with fries and a lemonade with pomegranate. After stirring the pomegranate syrup so it dissolved into the lemonade, I looked at the drink and noticed a long black hair in the drink. After bringing this to the owners attention, he brought us a new drink and said there was no hair in the drink and it was just the syrup. The syrup was red and thick while the hair we saw was thin, straight, and black. It was very clearly a hair, seeing as no one was wearing a hair net, but the owner told us repeatedly that we were wrong and there was no hair. Not wanting to argue with a grown man, we just let it go and did not drink the new lemonade. We will not be back as we can put hair in our own drinks at home for free.

Yelp
3.5 stars Pros: - location has good indoor and outdoor seating. - service is prompt and courteous, and ambience is ok if you're grabbing a quick meal. - price is decent - the falafels are made fresh and tasted good with the hummus. Cons: - the serving size seemed small, esp since the wraps had more lettuce than meat and sauces. - the taste of the rice dishes was good, but lacked that Mediterranean kick I expect from my wraps. Overall, I see the appeal and the location (close to the university and on the downtown strip) but the lack of flavor in the rice dishes left me wanting more.
google avatar

Tejaswini R.

Yelp
Ambience: The atmosphere at Falafel King is fairly standard--nothing particularly special, but it's comfortable enough for a quick meal. Outdoor seating is available too. Service: The service was quick and efficient. Food: We had Falafel wrap and Turkey Shawarma The falafel wrap was fresh and well-prepared, a highlight of the meal. However, the turkey shawarma was somewhat disappointing, deserving a 2/5 rating. On the bright side, the tzatziki sauce and hummus were both quite good and complemented the meal well. Overall Ratings: Service: 4/5 Food: 3/5 Ambience: 3/5 Parking: None available.

Yelp
Worst gyro i have ever had. No feta chunks at all, dry meat, butt ends of veggies, mostly cheap veggies like lettuce, carrots and onions vs tomatoes, cucumber etc.
google avatar

Vicki L.

Yelp
Check out the green chili hummus. Falafels are made in front of you. Friendly service.

Tom B.

Yelp
Had a Gyros two weeks ago and it was delicious. Had the Shawarma plate last night and was disappointed. Not nearly as flavorful as it used to be. Meat, meh ... Falafel King baba ganoush and hummus they sell to Whole Foods is better. Super friendly staff and hopeful the new owner can find their mojo baby!

Yelp
The restaurant located in the Central Boulder. It is very busy city central. Pearl Street is famous street in the city. Many people enjoy the morning and evening walk here. We got their special - Jerusalem the three meat combo. This is a good combo because it come with mix green, feta cheese, rice and pita. You also can try all the shave meat from the traditional grill. Meat is good marinated spice. Quantity is good. The owner is very friendly. Good experience.

Rick K.

Yelp
Food was expensive, portion skimpy and quality was not there. Been a customer over then past 50 years through multiple owners and this new group has not carried on the tradition of the excellence. Will not return.
google avatar

Indira G.

Yelp
The food was great and the service too! As soon as we walked in we were greeted with tasters and a very nice guy.The ambience was fine, but the falafel took the cake. True to its name it was the best falafel i'd had! The baklava was also great

Dixie E.

Yelp
We moved to Longmont from Boulder in 1999. We visited Boulder once every two months. My husband and I now have foot problems and with the parking apps Boulder set up, we were not able to visit falafel king for around six months. But the city revamped parking. We found a place near falafel king. So great. New comfy booths. The food is delicious. It is healthy and I love their baba ghanoush. We both got platters and everything on them was delicious We also got the pistachio baklava Absolutely delicious Very kind workers there. The music speakers were not working well, so the music was loud and scratchy. We ask if it could be turned down please, and they immediately turned it down. We had the opposite experience in a another restaurant a few weeks ago. The owner acted like we had asked him to jump off a bridge when we asked for the music to be turned down a bit. We will be back to falafel King!

Yelp
**do not eat here!!** My experience at Falafel King was incredibly disappointing. Not only did they discriminate against me and my service animal by asking for proof, which is illegal, but the staff also treated me with patronizing behavior. The food was below par, with cold dishes and even a hair in my hummus. Look, I respect service workers as I've been one before but the overall lack of respect and hygiene standards make this establishment one to seriously avoid. I would not recommend dining here if you expect to be treated with dignity and served decent food.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
A very popular takeout lunch spot. An enthusiastic gentleman was offering samples. I think vegetarians would have a hay day with their large assortment of sides, which can come together for a satisfying meal. I was excited to see the rotisserie, and decided to go with the gyro platter with an added falafel side. For my other sides, I had the baba g. and hummus. I liked everything but was a bit disappointed with the gyro. They ended up splicing it in chip-like fashion and searing it . It became dry and slightly burnt.
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Awesome falafel gyros. Best I've ever had. Service was quick, very friendly. Good prices. Simple atmosphere, just some tables, plenty spacious.

Anna A.

Yelp
YUM YUM YUM YUMMYyyyyy! The staff is lovely and service is quick. We got the gyro pita wrap YUM!
google avatar

Jodi H.

Yelp
I want to be more impressed, but just a little skimpy on the serving size and a little skimpy be on the customer service. This place has been around for a lot of years, but give us some food is my opinion, and a little bit of customer appreciation. Food was decent enough just small portions for the price in my own opinion.

Noa Naomi K.

Yelp
Best falafel I've ever had!! The service was amazing and the music was great! I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
google avatar

Kristen H.

Yelp
I don't recommend this place at all. The prices are way too high for the portion size. The falafels were tasty but the smallest I've ever seen. The lettuce for my salad was old and wilted. I won't eat there again.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't let the "meh" appearance fool you! Not surprisingly, given its prime real estate location on the touristy Boulder Pearl Street Mall, the restaurant's footprint is tiny and the interior is nothing special. I recommend you snag a seat outside, weather permitting. Alternatively, if you spy some CU students lingering at a table, you may be able to bribe them to vacate by buying them actual to-go food, or coffee, or offering to edit their Poli Sci paper. The food is fresh. Crunchy greens, moist* chicken, and tender-inside, crunchy outside falafel. The pita is still warm and the perfect carrier for the creamy hummus. The hummus is so good, you could actually skip the pita and main line it. I'm confessing that I did this, only because photographic evidence accompanies this review. The servers are attentive and efficient, so if there's a line, don't worry, it will move quickly. The portions were adequate, but might be a little small if you're looking to satisfy a big appetite. *I apologize to anyone with an aversion to the word "moist." The

Yelp
We were visiting the area and was looking for a quick bite to snack on. We saw this place staying celebrating 40 years of this business. When we entered it was busy. Saw options of fresh vegetables and sides and also meats in the warmers ready to serve. We split a falafel wrap. The falafel was so fluffy and moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. The hummus was so creamy and flavorful and the salad mix in it was so fresh. I think the pit is is made fresh too cause it was fluffy and crispy in the outside. During covid19 they had outdoor seating where you can enjoy your food and people watch. Overall it's a place to check out. If there's a crowd you know the food here mush be good.

Yelp
My experience is in reference to a takeout order. I waited until I was alerted my food was ready before heading that way. Upon my arrival, I went to the checkout and let the lady working there that I was here to pickup my online order. I was told they were making it. Odd that they marked it as ready and it was not but okay. I stepped to the side to not impede others. Stood there for a few more minutes before the owner noticed and asked what I needed, told him I was waiting for an online order. He walked back and grabbed it from the counter behind the cashier, which was there all along as I was watching food being prepared and handed it to me saying if you don't ask, you'd be standing all day. To which I told him I had asked several minutes before. I did not get a response. So if you order ahead, do not trust the 'read for pickup' or that the cashier will actually care to find your food to give to you. Gave an additional star only because I do enjoy the food and every dine in experience but very off put by this situation.

Yelp
This was delicious, got the gyro pita and I wish I had another one. I'm sure I'll be back soon.
google avatar

Yelp
It's a staple for me. Gyros. The "King" makes some of the best around. This location is always my favorite. One thing about the king, it's not cheap. It's not expensive but for a restaurant of this style you get less food than others, but the food is better, and tastes better, so I say go for it. Try all the sauces, especially the hot sauce. I spent about $23 on my double meat gyros plate. When I asked for some extra sauce they didn't charge me. Super cool. And for the record guys, it's pronounced GYRO with a G. Not "yee roo, yuro, or any of the other names I hear people call it. Maybe in greese it is, but...go to NYC and ask for a yeeroo, they won't even know what you want. In the USA it's called and pronounced GRYO.
google avatar

Christian T.

Yelp
The food was very mediocre. If you like Expensive bland food, then you might enjoy this place. The cherry on top was that the staff was "fake". The staff seemed friendly when you come in, but then completely ignore you when pay.

Luke P.

Yelp
Meat was absolutely delicious! They have a cool vertical broiler and a super neat falafel maker, amazing to see. Baklava was solid and full of spice. Highly recommend the gyro pita and also Mediterranean plate! Ambiance is authentic. Service was fast and helpful. Falafel balls were solid.

Bob B.

Yelp
Authentic healthy food that tasted great and was a value. Tremendously delicious! Service was helpful and even kind. A keeper! Get here early as it is very popular.

Yelp
The Food at the Pearl Street Mall location is surprisingly good and is one of my son's favourite places. He has very special needs and everyone is so kind to us. Good food and kind people go a long ways in my book!

Yelp
This review is LONG overdue. This is my go-to favorite place on the entire Pearl Street Mall. I want to give the entire team here a huge pat on the back for their amazing service. I will legit plan my work lunch around their non-rush times, which is hard because this place is a buzzing place all day! Thank you for being on Pearl Street and being the best place go feel any craving. I'm not a "vegan" but let's be honest any vegan, vegetarian, meat lover, and MORE can eat here and feel satisfied. Vegan lovers must try is the falafel, I would hope a place called Falafel King is known for it and it LIVES up to its name. I appreciate that they will make FRESH falafel in front of you the moment you order if the rest have been sitting. Don't worry, the unused and so called "old falafel" becomes the sample outside and brings any customer in. If that taste good, then you will LOVE fresh falafel. Just follow your nose. Meat Lovers: the gyro is amazing, the shawarma hots home and chicken is delicious. If you have never been the plate you want to get is the Jerusalem, this allows you to try all different meats. The special plates are great deals- I absolutely love to mix it up. I could honestly eat at this place every single day- there is so much variety and fulfills all my savory cravings. BONUS: They have homemade baklava, the pistachio is to die for and I can not get enough of it. Bless this entire team and I look forward to going back to work on Pearl Street just so I can visit this entire team!

Daniel L.

Yelp
Food is terrible. The owner is the worst person on Pearl. Don't go here! Plenty of better places. Go to ash'kara for Mediterranean food. Food had flies in it
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
They have gluten free wraps!! I got the Shawarma and it was so good. Super filling. Such a good recommendation while shopping in Boulder.
google avatar

Miss J.

Yelp
Food would've been good if they hadn't dumped a ton of oil and tahini all over it! I go here because you can get healthy food that tastes good. I ordered the grilled chicken with salad plate and once she put all the food in there she dumped all this oil and tahini sauce on it making it probably 500 more calories! My jaw dropped as she did this without asking. I couldn't eat it. I called to talk to a manager the following day and he argued with me that is how the plate comes even though it doesn't say that on the menu. They've always asked before doing this in the past and the manager not offering a resolution makes me give 1 star. I won't be back.
google avatar

Julia B.

Yelp
Authentic Greek food with delicious falafels! Perfect for a quick lunch in Pearl Street.
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
Excellent falafel! The Mediterranean sides were great as well. I got the dolmas, mushrooms, hummus and tabouli. Excellent lunch. My son enjoyed the shawarma. The cucumber water is delicious. Some of the best falafel I've ever had!
google avatar

Suf L.

Yelp
Staple spot on the mall. Always have a line. They have some great options to choose from, and it is a little pricey, especially for the falafel so don't be surprised when your bill is close to $50 for 3 people. Their drinks are super. I loved their pomegranate lemonade; I've never had that before. The platters are standard, and you get a salad with them. The ingredients are definitely fresh. Seating is very causal; there are a lot of flies because the door is wide open. Bathrooms are weirdly modern but a teeny bit dirty.

Sepideh M.

Yelp
This is definitely not as good at Kalita Grill, but I was shocked to learn that they managed to make a pita bread that tastes like nothing. I will be back in a couple of years when I forget how bad this was.
google avatar

Emma G.

Yelp
I've had Falafel King a few times before and every time it's great! I get the vegetarian platter with falafel and hummus, and the food is great and very filling. Everyone who works there is super nice as well!

R M.

Yelp
Ordered a chicken souvlaki sandwich. It was the worst I've ever had! Lettuce was old, flavors were bland and chicken was not grilled - in fact, I'm not even sure it was chicken. Would never recommend this place or return. Just bad food.

Wise 0.

Yelp
Odd owner . I worked in his factory only one day because he paid me in almost expired pita instead of actual money Hummus not included
google avatar

Tova B.

Yelp
holy SHIT! this is a must go. I saw the sign "try a free sample of falafel" and i was like okay might as well and it was actually some of the best i've had (and is gluten free!) The falafel is so crispy and crunchy on the outside and smooth in the inside. i could eat those all day long. they're perfect. i had the vegetarian plate (i am gluten free so i had to pass on the pita :( ). I got 7 AMAZING falafel balls, salad with tomato and cucumber and some fun dressings and spices, hummus (so fricken good), and an olive cucumber salad. I wish i tried the dolmas as they looked fantastic but oh well, I'll be coming back. I also was given a side of rice and sauce instead of pita which was very nice and it was so good. Mmm. My friend had the gyro sandwich. 10/10 again. Please try, the workers were super sweet. This is a hidden gem on pearl street. I will be dreaming about those falafel balls tonight. you have my heart falafel king.
google avatar

Amie A.

Yelp
So pricey! I ordered a falafel plate, and not only was it over $10, but the portions were tiny! The falafel balls: tiny; the salad portion: ridiculously tiny; and the portions of hummus and baba ganoush: so sadly shallow, I could've cried deeper puddles. Oh, and one measly piece of pita. The price reflects a larger portion from what you'd get from the wrap/sandwich, but I think it's the same amount of food. It's been 20+ years that my family and I have been coming here, and this is the first time I've felt ripped off. The food is good, but not $10.50 (before tax) good. I'll have to save my falafel eating for when I'm home in New York, where I can get big portions of middle Eastern food for reasonable prices. Because I like this place, and I like the owner, I really hope they change their portions to feed grown people... and not just the grown people who have bottomless wallets. Please note: I'd like to give this place 2.5 stars because 3 seems too generous. But, perhaps this reflects how I felt about their generosity to me. I hope to see changes if I dare return.
google avatar

Anne T.

Yelp
Great food. I enjoy gyros salad and plate. Falafel is nice and soft... I'll definitely come back.
google avatar

Rita J.

Yelp
Been coming here since 1994 and the food is still amazing! Unfortunately I can't visit every week like I use to since I had to move out of state, but whenever I come back, it's the first place I stop. The interior could use some sprucing up though ;-)
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
Loved this place for thirty years, and still loving it. Best gyros and falafel balls I've ever had in my mouth. Fresh food, fast service, always excellent. Don't believe me? Walk by there any day during lunch - there's a line out the door of people waiting patiently for food.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
The service is always very quick and fresh. I like that they give you extra taziki sauce and other sauces if you ask. The presentation was nice and my husband and I enjoyed our small lunch today. The falafel king is very good and consistent!
google avatar

Martial B.

Yelp
Excellent falafel humus wrap (add onions and hot sauce) and gyros grilled meat platter. Very fresh and tasty.

Switch W.

Yelp
For decades Falafel King was one of my favorites and I even used them for catered meals, but it's taken a nose dive recently. The portion sizes have gotten so small that after going there, I had to get some food elsewhere to be satisfied. Even the falafel balls have gotten smaller. And this is with a steep rise in the prices. After two meals there, just to make sure it wasn't just a bad day the first time, I'm done with them.
