Where to Drink Coffee in Northampton, Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"Located in a historic train-car structure, this carefully curated cafe uses salvaged wood paneling from a local paper mill and focuses on light and medium roast drip, pour-overs, and espresso sourced from Counter Culture (currently featuring a Peruvian single-origin); the layout encourages outdoor dining along the Northampton Rail Trail when weather permits, the city’s seasonal street closures allow expanded seating, and operations have emphasized takeout and outdoor service during pandemic-related indoor closures." - Aaron Kagan

Google
Great place to bring friends, a date, or to just get a quick perk up. Great coffee options, local pastry, sandwiches and an amazing tea selection!

Alexandria B.

Google
The best egg sammies around but also their coffee is delicious. The place has a cute upscale vibe with outdoor seating. There is plenty of off-street parking. If you're in the area, definitely stop by!

Larry S.

Google
This is my son's favorite coffee shop. My latte was delicious. The place was packed, so we sat at the tables above and behind the restaurant. I'm so glad we did. The weather was pleasant for November. There was a slight breeze which would occasionally send leaves fluttering down on us. It made a wonderful memory with our granddaughter. A perfect New England fall experience,!

Google
It was a rainy day as I ordered the beet on sourdough and made it vegetarian. (No turkey) I probably shouldn't have had it toasted as it was a bit dry. A good sandwich nonetheless. I followed it up with a honey cinnamon latte. The place was warm and inviting and the staff pleasant.

Google
Really was looking for a sit down dinner on a Sunday. Most places were not open. Saw this cute space looked online and the sandwiches looked good.👍 IT WAS EXCELLENT! Even the gluten free sandwich was a winner. The foam on the top was the decaf cappuccino was decadent ☕️!!!!

Jessica M.

Google
Really special spot for lunch. I love the old train car, clearly well-cared for with so much history (see old photos by the entrance doors). Food was fresh and delicious. Seating is limited in the winter, fyi.

Google
Love this booth looking place! Food and drinks are great. Seasonal menu too - the pumpkin toast is truly one of a kind

Anaka M.

Google
One of the best places I've ever eaten at. The drinks (we got a matcha latte and a lemonade espresso) and food were both delicious and I loved the outdoor seating.

Yelp
One of the coolest, cutest and yummiest coffee shops around! Went for breakfast right when they opened, the miso sweet potato on my breakfast sandwich was one the most delicious things I've ever eaten. Loved it

Yelp
We absolutely love Familiars, and go once a week. The Honey Cinnamon latte is delicious, and I really appreciate their selection of loose leaf teas. We got hooked on their egg sandwiches on croissants, BLT on sourdough, and the caprese salad. The turkey deli meat falls short though -- I've had it a few times and realized its just not a high-quality ingredient compared to everything else, and it shows. It gets BUSY though. Summertime is great, because they have a beautiful outdoor seating area, and you can even access their cafe via the rail trail that runs behind it. However, indoor seating is limited, and the cash register is very close to the entrance, so it's not uncommon for the line to run outside. I HIGHLY recommend ordering online if you know what you want.

Yelp
YUM! This little coffee shop both eats and serves! The vibes were immaculate, the food was so so so tasty, and the drinks were to die for! I had the Original Lox breakfast sandwich on gf bread and it was the best thing I've eaten in a while! The bread was spongey, the tomato was hands down the best and most perfectly acidic tomato I've ever had, and cream cheese : salmon ratio was absolutely perfect. I need a pitcher of the rosemary orange matcha, and you need to make sure to try a hot poached pair cappuccino, it's the perfect winter drink!

Cathy W.

Yelp
This was our first time going to Familiars and just seeing it from the outside, I couldn't wait to go in!! The service was friendly and fast!! The train car was cozy with a great system of ordering coffees and food. We got the holiday specials--eggnog latte and the BOG on an Asiago bagel. Delicious!! Would definitely go back!

Yelp
Another great breakfast from Familiars. Very easy to order online. Food was on time and excellent quality as it always is here. Great staff. One of my favorites in NH!

Yelp
Oh how I love this place . We went twice in a day . It's so cute , the staff is Amazing and the food and coffee ... delicious

Yelp
food - 9/10 drinks - 8/10 If you want a good breakfast sandwich, this is definitely the place. I did take out so I had to reheat the sandwiches a little but regardless they still were delicious. I do wish there was a little more sauce on the sandwiches but I loved the bacon, although that might just be because I love bacon. The drinks were good nothing out of the world but pretty decent to eat with the sandwiches.

Jessica D.

Yelp
This place is consistently good with great seasonal menus and creative drink and food specials. Outdoor seating is lovely in warmer weather.

Yelp
Another year another Familiar's review. This place gets better and better. Recently was in town for some business and hightailed it to Familiar's for theirs gorgeous Blue Pea latte and a vegetarian sandwich. The coffee is just stupidly good. Decadent, great latte art, simply a real treat. Their sandwiches (I opted for sourdough bread, although a bagel would've worked really well) hit every time. Chewy bread with delicate vegetables, creamy avocado, and their crazy ridiculously good house made honey mustard... so good I could cry. Staff is friendly as all get out. They'll answer any question and provide great service even throughout a rush. Ambiance is beautiful. You are surrounded by light as it spills in through the train car windows and reflects off the high gloss wood finishing of the restaurant. Seating is limited (although outdoor dining is optional!), but a seat facing the street is worth the wait for people watching.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Food service and ambiance. Yes they all exceed expectations. Service is friendly. Food is great. Coffee and beverages are delicious.

Yelp
This place is so epic! From the vibes to the quality, everything is 10/10. I absolutely loved my hojicha ube iced latte, and my husband found the Americola a super unique espresso drink. Menu is extensive with something for everyone and lots of inspired seasonal drinks. The place was bustling but coffees came out quickly and there seems to be a well oiled online take away system too. The outdoor seating area is fantastic in the warmer weather but the inside is funky and weird in the best way. A great spot for tea and coffee lovers alike!

Yelp
The espresso so so so sour you can not even drink its feel like someone put lemon juice instead the Americano .. I don't know how Americano can be that bad the cold latte its the only thing that I could drink there I give little plus fir the seltzer water that was nice they giving you for free when you order espresso I didn't tried the food but this is my experience with the coffee..
google avatar

Yelp
The food and coffee are good here. Cute environment. We went twice on a Sunday afternoon and it was very crowded. Might be nicer at an off time when you don't have to jockey for a table
google avatar

Alma F.

Yelp
For the price a little more chicken salad would be fair. Great sourdough a little on the thin side.

Julia W.

Yelp
We love the gay witch café here. Service is always quick. If you want a cute cozy venue with delicious drinks and fun seasonal brunch items, this is it!

Yelp
Not a fan. Looks beautiful, seems like a great find, my kids adore it. I can see why, but not for me. The ordering system is crazy. Why not put a Q Code on the tables ? The line, which was quite active during our entire visit, begins as you enter the door and then blocks those exiting. Then, folks stand around and wait in little crowds for their coffee & items. Those who are staying, must hover over those lucky enough to have a coveted table. Better to grab a seat & be able to order knowing that your to stay food will have a place to rest. Adorable, cute, kitschy. All of these things. I did not care for my coffee at all. I actually left half of it over. And I am not just being obtuse, I hated the coffee. And get this..I ordered it to stay in a mug, assuming that the small, medium & large were varied in sized "mugs" or the larger tea cups. No. I ordered a large, and it's in the same size as the small would be. One size mug. So the prices are $3, $3.50 & $4 for Drip. The large is suppose to be 160z. No way my mug was even 12 oz. I tried, with no success to ask the cashier what would have happened if I ordered the small or medium to which she replied while looking at me as if I had 2 heads "I guess I would spill some of it out". I simply gave up as I was being overwhelmed by the giant line forming behind me out the door. Doesn't matter, I wouldn't return. If you love it here, I get it, I do. To each her own.

Yelp
So many healthy and delicious food options. As a vegetarian I really appreciate veggie rich foods, and they have got it here. The veggie sandwich was delicious and filling and the bread choices are plentiful. The side salad was huge, fresh, and packed with veggies. The vinaigrette dressing is healthy and delicious. I got the special iced Lavender Lattee and that was fantastic, the flavor was fragrant and pleasant, and didn't need any sugar added. A healthy lunch, and the seating options are a variety of cozy places. It's beautiful inside, they have restrooms, and the outdoor patio was lovely sitting in a booth. There are patio tables and chairs as well. Coffees are set out quickly at the station, and they take your name to bring food to your table. It's easy to self bus, even outside they have a bussing station where you can leave your dishes and toss your trash. It was beautiful, tasty, food was served quickly, and lovely to linger, there was no rush to eat. I would love to go back again soon! If I lived locally I would frequent this cafe!

Yelp
My friend mentioned that she has been wanting to visit this place for a while so we decided to give it a try about 2 Sundays ago. Our only regret is not visiting this place sooner. The inside is not big. However is extremely cozy and beautiful. The service was great and the breakfast was delicious. We had the Spanish Latte and we would 100% recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good latte. We will be visiting them soon.

Yelp
Absolutely obsessed with this place. The tea and tea lattes are perfection. Sandwiches are all good that I've had-- my friend always gets the bagels but I like the wheat bread. Service is always fast, and the space is great inside and out. I love the strong street patio seating with the cushions, especially on a warm day.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for lunch on a beautiful day so we opted to sit outside. Wish they had a real menu to look at and specials. Didn't like the "special" sodas since they had a funny taste.. give me Coke or Pepsi please. The chicken salad sandwich was very good although the bread was not to my liking. I got the whole wheat thinking it would be like a regular piece of bread but other than color my husbands sourdough was exactly the sam. The chicken salad itself was very good and a nice size serving. I loved the condensed milk coffee (iced) although next time I will get an extra shot of expresso since it was a bit too milky.

Yelp
This place is so cute!! Both the interior and exterior are quite quaint and provide such a unique coffee shop vibe. Their menu is expansive, and they have a large variety of coffee/tea options. I got a chai tea latte and an everything bagel with chive cream cheese. Both were just okay, but nothing exactly spectacular. I would love to come back to try more!
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee and classic sandwiches and breakfast sandos! Fast, friendly, mostly hands-off service. Cute vibe and aesthetic, if you can manage to find a table. It's all windows, which I imagine makes for a great place for a caffeine-fueled study session on a sunny day.

Yelp
Whilst in the region to celebrate a college graduation, my wife and I stumbled onto Familiars while waiting on a table at another cafe. Not wanting to wait another 45 minutes for coffee, we went inside. This cozy, welcoming, LGBTQ+ friendly establishment specializes in coffee, breakfast, and brunch fare. Located on a tree-lined side street in Northampton the vibe is relaxed, the coffee is great, and the food fresh, tasty, and prepared with care. Strongly recommended!

Yelp
We stopped by for a rest after perusing through the local shops. I found their logo charming and was tempted to buy merch. Unique building converted from a train car! Ordered an arugula salad with lemon vinaigrette, hot apple cider, and a hot chocolate. All very delicious!
google avatar

Marie D.

Yelp
First, let me say, that they will NOT take your take-out order over the phone. This was inconvenient for me as I was rushed and not near wi-fi. So I needed to order when I arrived, I was told, or do it online. Anyway. The baked goods are all exceptional and our sandwiches on croissants really special because of that. A previous time, I had a kale salad and it was fresh and well made. But the baked goods...my downfall. Mmmm.

R. L.

Yelp
Two words...chicken salad. Yelp tells me I need at least 85 characters to post - so I'll say it again...chicken salad. Eat it early and often people.

Yelp
My wife used Yelp to find this well-loved Coffee & Tea Shop that also has great food. Familiars had other options, but a focus seemed to be breakfast and lunch bagel sandwiches. Upon arrival, you can sit at an outside table and use your phone to scan a QR code there. The menu comes up on your phone, you order and pay on your phone and you get a text message informing you when your order will be ready. When you order is done, they call your name and also put a brown bag with your name on the table. I'm not sure this modern service model would work for everybody, but I love it because it's efficient, and it allows Familiars to focus on completing food orders. That's important, because while my wife and I were there, Familiars serviced a lot of customers. The outside seating area is great. I don't know if this is permanent or a consequence of Covid, but they blocked traffic on Strong Avenue and set up a bunch of red tables, many of which have umbrellas, in the street. It feels very European, or at least Bostonian. The bagel sandwiches were terrific. I ordered a toasted Tandem sesame bagel sandwich that came with hummus, sprouts, cucumbers, red roasted, shredded carrots, greens, feta and balsamic. I also added veggie sausage, which was overkill, but that's on me. The bagel was perfect. The toppings were fresh, had great texture and color and had plenty of flavor, perhaps highlighted by the hummus, feta and balsamic. The veggie sausage was also good, but there was just too much stuff and the bagel became messy. I asked for it - my fault. The star of the show may have been my wife's Turkey, Avocado, Bacon sandwich on a Tandem everything whole wheat bagel. It also had greens and honey mustard. She loved it and rarely finishes something like that, but she did today. She gave me a bite. It was great and I would order it for sure. If you like Northampton, dining al fresco on a street table, terrific bagel sandwiches and I assume tea and/coffee (I was full of coffee when I arrived), find a great Summer day and check it out with your friends or family.

Yelp
Super easy ordering from the QR tables, conveniently located on each of the outside tables. Very fast service but it didn't change the quality of the food & drinks. I was so happy with my Spanish latte, that I needed to try another drink on our way out. My second coffee was as honey cinnamon latte and it was amazing! Those amazing drinks were outshined by the classic lox bagel. The bagel had the perfect amount of snap and chewiness. Their delicious salmon worked perfectly with the chive cream cheese and capers. ps. Top your coffee with the house made maple whipped cream.

Yelp
In downtown Northampton there's a very attractive coffee shop that looks like a train, it also has the loveliest outdoor seating area with little red umbrellas. There's also plenty of plants, some are real and some are not. It's all very inviting and cute. Familiars Coffee & Tea has been feeding and making coffee for Northampton under a variety of names since 1932. That's older then my grandma. It's an iconic sight in this town. My friend and I stopped by for coffee. You're encouraged to make your order by scanning the QR code posted on each table. You can also go inside to make your order. I wanted to go in to see what it's like. But we didn't feel very wanted inside. There is no seating inside, while it's a great day to spend outdoors, it's also unfortunate they're not utilizing the indoor space, since it's such a unique idea of a train. Where I was inside, I could only see the large menu on the wall and the brown bags with orders waiting to go out. I couldn't see the potential dining area. There's a pretty extensive list of teas and coffees. I got the matcha for a change. My friend got their Lavender Rose iced tea. My matcha was $7, and the tea was $5. I'd say that's a bit extreme. Then we sat outside and waited and waited and waited. We waited for over a half hour. They were busy, but there were several people working. I was hoping this would be the best matcha I've ever had. And I've had some bad matcha. Just when I was about to go ask about our order, it came out. Hmmm.. there was foam on top, my matcha looked good. I went in for the first sip. I had to go inside, to get some sugar. It was actually really delicious matcha. I don't want to say the best I've had, because it was ridiculously overpriced at $7. My friend also needed to sweeten her overpriced tea, and it was also very delicious. And a very unique flavor. While we enjoyed our drinks, I didn't enjoy the long wait, the high cost or the unfriendly service. They're also unfortunately not utilizing this unique space in the best possible way. Anyone can have outdoor seating, not everyone can make a coffee shop inside a train.

Yelp
RELAX UNDER RED UMBRELLAS IN STRONG ST PEDESTRIAN ZONE Lots of outdoor tables socially distanced. Order online in advance for a quick pickup or scan patch on the table to order on line while relaxing under your red umbrella. Made in the shade! Quality ingredients and fresh basked breads and bagels make tasty toast, breakfast sandwiches and lunch. Baristas craft artisan espresso drinks to your taste. A comprehensive tea menu. Cold brew, ice espressos and lattes. Sit, chat relax. NO CARS ON STRONG STREET. OR RIDE UP ON THE RAIL TRAIL & REFUEL AT TRAILSIDE TABLES.
google avatar

Zack G.

Yelp
Coffee shop that has been around since 1932, and that is inside of an old train car! Also have a ton of outdoor seating as well Right now you order at the counter inside of the car, but all of their seating is outside due to COVID. Although I didn't get to sit inside, I did take note of how nice it was inside! They have a huge variety of coffee, tea, and food options. I got one of their signature lattes (cinnamon and honey I think?) and it was delicious

Mary A.

Yelp
This is destination coffee - I live for these sorts of finds... adorable decor, warm, well lit, friendly, natural wood, funky MCM big glass block wall in bathroom provides light and privacy - bravo. But none of it matters if the coffee's bad. My cappuccino was so damn good, I went back again for a second within a couple hours. The caffeine high was spectacular and the flavor was dead-on. Would drive to NoHo for a cup of comfort at any time. Excellent location.

Christina F.

Yelp
Great food omg and even better drinks !!! Love this place sm. Have been a bunch of times and always try new things.

Yeselie M.

Yelp
Nice coffee shop located in Northampton. I originally went on for a specific drink but they did not have available. I ordered an iced matcha latte. Looking forward to returning here to try other items in their menu

Yelp
Great cafe in Northampton. Love everything about this place. Good ambiance and great beverage

Yelp
The staff who I ordered from was super friendly. I liked my blue pea flower tea a lot even though it didn't really taste like anything. Ha. Really cool space.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
3-4 stars for coffee, 1-2 for food -- with an added bonus for ambiance. Came here twice while in from out of town, and the coffee was good both times, their special lattes were very tasty. The first time, we got sandwiches for lunch as well, and those were a miss -- very lacking in flavor and the lettuce was very bitter. The location itself is very cool, inside a train car (which was open for indoor and outdoor seating when we visited) -- so I would say it's definitely worth a visit, just skip the food.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place! The quality of drinks and food are so yummy, I'm never disappointed! The online ordering is very easy to navigate, the service is friendly, quick, and always turns out delicious. The courtyard has nice seating for all seasons. Definitely recommend this place to stop by for lunch, snack, or refreshment!

Elle S.

Yelp
Delicious fresh food, beautiful ambience, wonderful service! I wish I lived here so I could go all the time.

Leesa G.

Yelp
Food good. Coffee drinks good. Outdoor seating wonderful relaxing place. Google says pet friendly. To be clear, they are not pet friendly. I intended to sit outside and went in to order. They politely told me my 15 lb dog was not welcome and I had to order by QR code outside. Fine, I get that but you can only get food delivered to your table if you order inside. So I had to go back in and get it while they were more than happy to deliver tableside if you ordered inside. Again, they told me dog not invited but I can't leave him out there alone next to the street. Figure it out Familiars!! Maybe you can do without the business from people accompanied by dogs.

Taylor P.

Yelp
5 Stars all day long! I am obsessed with this place. They have one of the best iced lattes in all of mass. The vibes are immaculate and the staff is so friendly and helpful. I got a cinnamon raisin bagel and iced vanilla latte and my friend got the avocado toast. I highly recommend. Thanks Familiars for making my morning 10x better. Can't wait to come back

Yelp
In medieval times, a "familiar" was the assistant to a practitioner of magic. Not quite a slave, but definitely an underling who commanded little respect and had no say in the day to day goings on of their master. This, I believe, is the dynamic that the owners of this house of pretension were going for. They are the magic makers, if magic is defined as transforming 12 ounces of room temperature water into a weak, barely warmer cup of coffee for $4.50. We, the customers, are their familiars. We are not allowed inside the building. We mustn't speak directly to anyone who works there. We may only order our coffee via an app, and then retrieve our order when it is left outside, in the cold on a table, by an anonymous hand, perhaps a distant cousin of the Addams family's Thing. The beauty of the space inside is wasted. The coffee is an afterthought. Your presence here is not welcome. Spend your money, say nothing, don't look directly at the staff, and then run along to your muck pile where you belong, you filthy familiar.
google avatar

Hilary D.

Yelp
We love this spot: outstanding sandwiches, great range of coffee and other beverage options, and an absolutely gorgeous spot both indoors and outdoors. I really appreciate any place that not only offers outdoor seating but also spruces it up a bit, and Familiars is the best in that regard, but do yourself a favor and check out the lovely interior as well.

Joanna V.

Yelp
Gluten free baked goods are not difficult to make or source. Please add some to your offerings. It's 2024. There are many of us out here, looking for tasty GF pastries. You can do it, Familiars.
google avatar

Hannah H.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere, decent bagels, but hit or miss on the drinks. 3.5 stars rounded up. This little train car coffee shop is adorable. Lots of bites to eat and drinks to enjoy. There are even some seasonal options. I had an apple cider during the fall months which was tasty, but pricey for what you were actually getting. The hot chocolate was alright but had a chemical taste. It had the distinct taste of a cheap hot cocoa mix used to create it. Meh. Whole wheat bagel + veggie cream cheese was really delicious. Bagel was skinnier than a traditional New York style one, but- we're not in NYC anymore, Toto. My partner had a bagel with egg, cheese, and some kind of meat. He said the bagel was meh but the egg and other fillings were delicious! The coffee was okay but there's much better cups to be had at Shelburne Falls so don't waste a trip here, if you're looking solely for coffee. There is a lot of seating in the train car and is perfect for smaller groups. Overall, the atmosphere is cute and there are plenty of seating options. Food is good, coffee is meh. Check it out, if for no other reason than for how it's so fucking adorable.

Yelp
Asked if the garden salad was a good size, was told yes. For the cost it is NOT. Should have gone to a breakfast place.

Yelp
I am in love with this place in Northampton. So many coffee places here but I'd stop here. A converted diner that is so cute. So many options. I got a Spanish latte and my girlfriend got a latte and a bacon egg cheese on a bagel. Everything was amazing. Would come back

P M.

Yelp
Amazing coffee at this place! We tried the seasonal latte with oat milk and it was divine. Also the cortado with oat milk was perfect! We also tried some of their sandwiches for lunch. They were so good! We have a Smithie in the family so will be giving her a gift card to this place to use as a treat. And will most definitely be back when we are in town.

Yelp
What. The. Pluperfect. Hell. If I see a "$" rating on Yelp, I expect the prices to be "inexpensive." (That is -- theoretically, anyway -- what the tag means.) I do NOT expect to see a menu with $4 cups of tea, $7 breakfast sandwiches, $12 salads (!!), $4 bagels and the like. So very many shades of No. I get that soaking the college students is the raison d'etre of Northampton businesses, but a little truth in advertising, please. "$" does NOT mean "less expensive than the other eateries on the block." (Which, as it happens, this isn't.) It means "inexpensive," and the tacit Yelp standard for a diner on that count is under $10 for a meal. And the only way that happens here is someone nursing a cup of tea. If that means that nothing in downtown Northampton short of Bueno y Sano qualifies, so be it.
